Vote for Space at SXSW 2017

We need your help! There are a number of exciting space-related panels proposed for next year’s South by Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas. SXSW is a community-driven event and voting accounts for 30% of the decision-making process for any given programming slot. The selection process is extremely competitive and the more votes we submit for the space panels, the more likely a panel related to space exploration will be included in the final SXSW program.

To help you out as you consider what to vote for, we’ve put together a list of all the NASA-related panel proposals.

These proposals look at ways we explore the solar system and beyond:

New Eyes on our Home System: NASA's Next Telescope

Dark Energy and Exoplanets: NASA's WFIRST Mission

James Webb Space Telescope model on the lawn of The Long Center this weekend

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, University of Texas at Austin astronomers Karl Gebhardt, Sarah Tuttle and Steven Finkelstein are helping NASA bring the James Webb Space Telescope to Austin for SXSW.

A full-scale model, the size of a tennis court and four stories high, will be set up outdoors next to the Long Center, and the three will gives free public talks each day in an adjacent tent.

Other events include a talk from Nobel Prize-winning astronomer John Mather and scientists from MIT and elsewhere; nightly star parties hosted by local astronomy clubs; and an attempt at breaking the Guinness Book record for the world's largest astronomy lesson.

No festival passes are needed for these free events, which are also sponsored by JWST-builder Northrop Grumman. For information on the telescope, and a link to the schedule of SXSW events, http://bit.ly/Y6hGHC

The Bob Bullock IMAX Theatre is at 1800 N. Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701.

The Northrop Grumman Corporation is highlighting NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in an exhibit at the SXSW Gaming Expo at the Palmer Events Center March 13-15. Free and open to the public (no badge required).

The Webb Telescope exhibit will feature touch screens to show science visualizations and other videos. Visitors can talk with scientists and engineers who will share how Webb will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to push the boundaries of science and technology.

* Interactive attendees are invited to attend the panel "First Signs: Finding Life on Other Planets," featuring scientists from the #JWST and Kepler missions.

Astronomers are finding new planets at an astounding rate, but the first indications of alien life won’t be snapshots of lush continents. Learn how astronomers use NASA telescopes to search for the telltale signs of a viable planet.
