Crown prince Salman: Saudi Arabia and Israel getting 'closer' to normalization
Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) has revealed in a US television interview that his country is moving closer to normalizing relations with Israel. He also expressed concerns about Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon, stating, "If they get one, we have to get one, for security reasons and the balance of power in the Middle East. But we don't want to see that."
MbS made these remarks in an interview with Fox News, where he discussed a range of topics, including the potential for diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. He emphasized the importance of resolving the Palestinian issue as part of any normalization agreement.
“For us, the Palestinian issue is very important. We need to solve that part," the Saudi Arabi's de facto leader said.
Regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions, MbS expressed worry about the consequences if Iran were to acquire a nuclear bomb and stated that such a scenario would lead to a "big fight with the rest of the world."
US officials are actively working on brokering a historic deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel, which would include discussions on US security guarantees, civilian nuclear assistance for Saudi Arabia, and potential Israeli concessions to the Palestinians. While challenges remain, the US sees potential benefits in such a mega-deal, including reducing tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict, countering Iran, and strengthening alliances in the Gulf.
The interview coincided with a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which they pledged to work toward Israeli-Saudi normalization. Both leaders also expressed concerns about Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.
MbS defended OPEC+'s decision to cut oil output, denying that it was intended to aid Russia in its war in Ukraine. He also discussed the need for reforms in the Saudi security system to prevent incidents like the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the future.
While the potential for improved US-Saudi relations and Israeli-Saudi normalization exists, it faces challenges in the US Congress due to concerns over MbS's role in various issues, including the Khashoggi case, Yemen's conflict, and oil prices.

Biden claims the Saudi Crown Prince is to blame for Khashoggi's murder
US Vice President Joe Biden said on Friday that he told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that he held him accountable for the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, shortly after exchanging a handshake with the kingdom's de facto ruler.
On a visit to a country he had labeled a pariah after Khashoggi's murder in 2018, Biden said the heir to the throne, known as MbS, denied involvement in the murder and said he had held some these responsible accountable.
"With regard to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, I raised it at the beginning of the meeting, making it very clear what I thought at the time and what I think now," Biden told reporters.
"In discussing it, I was straightforward and direct. I made my point very clear. I stated unequivocally that an American president remaining silent on a human rights issue is inconstant with who we are and who I am."
According to US intelligence, the crown prince authorised an operation to apprehend or kill Khashoggi, a Saudi insider turned critic who was murdered and dismembered by Saudi agents within the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul. What happened to Khashoggi, according to Biden, was "outrageous."
Biden described the crown prince's reaction during their meeting as "basically saying that he was not solely accountable for it." "I indicated that I believed he was."
"In discussing it, I was straightforward and direct. I made my point very clear.

Saudi customer service centres must employ citizens: HR Ministry
Saudi customer service centres must employ citizens: HR Ministry
Saudi Arabia will reserve customer service centre jobs for Saudi citizens to “offer greater opportunities” and “improve their income potential”, officials said, as the oil exporter battles economic headwinds.
The kingdom, the Arab world’s economic powerhouse, has increasingly sought to employ its nationals over migrant workers, a trend that has grown across Gulf monarchies since a 2014 oil price plunge.
“Jobs in remote customer service roles will from now on be reserved for Saudis,” the Human Resources and Social Development Ministry announced in a statement on Monday.
“This decision is intended to create job opportunities for Saudis, help them improve their income levels and support the Saudi economy.”
Ahmed Alrajhi, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, said on Twitter that the decision was part of the country’s Saudisation plan.

“An extension of the ministry’s endeavors to expand Saudisation, with the aim of enabling the nation’s sons and daughters to have job opportunities; We issued a decision restricting work in the professions and jobs of remote customer service to Saudi men and women, whether through direct or indirect contracting,” Alrajhi’s tweet said.
The edict will apply to all client-facing roles that use telephone contact, email, social media and other “modern means”, the ministerial decree said.

Double economic hit
Unemployment in Saudi Arabia reached 14.9 percent in the third quarter of 2020, approaching the record 15.4 percent jobless rate recorded a year earlier, according to official data.
Some 60 percent of unemployed Saudis are aged between 20 and 29.
The statistics authority attributed the unemployment figures to the coronavirus pandemic, which “continues to affect the Saudi job market and its economy”.
The world’s leading exporter of crude oil has faced a double hit from the global health crisis and the collapse in oil prices on the international market.
Last week, de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the Saudi Public Investment Fund would invest $40bn in economic stimulus annually over the next five years, as the kingdom combats soaring unemployment.
