History of Magical Girl Anime, Part 15
History of #MagicalGirl #Anime, Part 15
Haven’t done one of these for a while. This is yet another video from SourcererZZ’s well-made series on the history of magical girl anime. His presentation remains impressively disinterested and scholarly, though his thick accent also remains hard to understand, so I recommend turning on the closed captions, which, though somewhat messed up, are nonetheless helpful. He goes here through the years…

Moegaku 5 (2008) is a small magical girl franchise from recent years. It originally began as a video game called Moegaku, which follows the struggles of a girl named Moe to learn English, as not only is her crush living in America, but she has recently become a magical girl and all of her attacks are English words! Like the more famous "educational magical girl" Moetan (2007), Moegaku is designed to teach fanboys English. Later, the mini-anime Moegaku 5 was made. In the anime, Moe is now tasked with the protection of otaku paradise Akihabara, using her language skills to keep things going. Moe is able to help several handsome foreign otaku navigate Akihabara and find the goods they're looking for, meeting hunky tourists from not only America, but also Korea, China, France and Spain. Interestingly, while the original game was targeted at adult otaku, the anime was marketed towards young children, utilizing similar techniques and themes as Dora the Explorer.
