#Modern Brilliant Cut Diamond

Link
The Brilliant Cut Diamonds has awed and wooed men and women around the globe since it was first discovered. Its dazzling sparkle has charmed dignitaries, A-list actresses, music moguls, and fashionistas. As quiet as it's kept, the Brilliant Cut Diamond is probably the most preferred engagement ring for astute diamond buyers.
The one thing that has miffed many in the diamond trade and consumers alike is the mysterious diamond cut. If you are familiar with the 4 C's of Diamonds; Colour, Cut, Clarity, and Carat weight. If you buy diamonds often or are a diamond trader, you know how inconsistent diamond cutting can be.

Note
People are speculating they are the greville chandelier earrings
The diamond and platinum earrings were made by Cartier in London over a period of years, starting in 1918 and ending in 1929. Initially they were a simple pair of brilliant drop earrings. In 1922, they were lengthened using twelve additional diamonds. The earrings were completed in their present form in February 1929, when ten more diamonds were added.
The royal collection notes that each earring features “a lexicon of modern diamond cuts.” These include a trio of pair-shaped diamond pendants, plus diamonds in baguette, baton, emerald, half-moon, trapeze, and square cuts. The ultimate effect is that of a modern girandole or chandelier earring, a technical and unique take on an earring shape that has been popular for centuries.”
OMG stop. Really?

December 31st
Friday, 11:58PM
The breeze blew warm across the water, rippling the surface into small waves and where the water met the sand, the sand gleamed pale pink. Syd had never seen pink sand before, and no matter how many times she watched the water wash over it and turn it pink, she found it beautiful. For the first time since laying eyes on Tori in a smoke-filled warehouse, Syd felt completely at peace.
Finally.
Of course, it was too dark to really see the sand turning pink, but she didn't care. It was a gorgeous night, with a thousand stars sparkling overhead like small, perfectly cut diamonds. A light breeze ruffled through the skirt of her gauzy white sundress and the wet sand was cool beneath her bare feet, her sandals back up where the dry sand began.
Frerin came up behind her, easing his arms about her waist. “Where are you?”
“I’m right here,” she told him, leaning back against his chest. “It’s not Aruba, but it’s perfect just the same.”
“You ever been here before?”
“Bermuda? No.”
“Me, neither. I think it’s perfect, too.”
She turned toward him, draping her arms about his neck. “We did it.”
“How pissed do you think everyone will be when we tell them?”
“Who cares?”
He smiled as he bent to kiss her, and as their lips met, she tightened her arms about him, threading her fingers up into his wavy dark hair as his tongue slipped between her lips to caress hers. Somehow, she didn’t think she’d ever get tired of his kisses. Of the feel of his hands curving over her ass to give it a teasing knead. Of the way those hands tightened on her to pull her flush against him, where he already rose against her.
They’d arrived in Bermuda the previous day, and that morning, in a quiet civil ceremony, she and Frerin got married, and as far as Syd was concerned, it was the most perfect wedding ever and she didn't care if they ever went back home.
He drew back, his eyes glittering in the moonlight. “We should head back. It’s almost midnight. I planned to have you naked a minute after the ball drops in New York.”
“Now that sounds like the perfect way to ring in the new year.”
“I thought so.” He smiled as he lifted her easily and she wrapped her legs about his waist. “I love you, Syd.”
“I love you, too, Frerin.”
He kissed once more, deep and slow and as he drew back, fireworks burst across the sky in a brilliant display of gold, pink, and green. “Happy New Year, Mrs. Durin.”
“I love how that sounds,” she murmured, linking her fingers at the back of his neck. “So, why don’t we go back to our room and celebrate the new year, your birthday, and our wedding night the way they should be celebrated?”
“You read my mind, honey. I think I’m going to like being married to you.”
He set her down then and as their fingers linked and she gazed up at him, she remembered the first time he ever spoke to her, the first time he ever kissed her, and the first time they were together. In the span of seven days, she found everything she ever dreamed she would and as Frerin tugged her into his arms once more, everything was just as it should be.
The End

a small rant about diamonds
I feel that for most people, Diamonds are seen purely as just the modern Brilliant Round Cut and pure clear or maybe a bit yellow-tinted and that's it. I feel like more people should be more aware that: 1. There are diamonds in pretty much every color of the rainbow including black, pink, brown, red, green, blue, greyish, etc. Colored diamonds are typically called "fancy diamonds" with pink being arguably the most sought after (Though so far the only geologically-occurring Pink diamonds tend to be teeny tiny in size, almost being like big grains of sand), and Red diamonds being the most expensive. Yellow diamonds are the most common, to the point that a bit of yellow tinge in otherwise near-perfectly-clear diamonds is sort of viewed as a bit of a flaw. Though pure yellow diamonds are still considered Fancy Diamonds. There is also a bit of controversy if Black diamonds (carbonados, as they're also known) really qualify as true fancy diamonds. They definitely stand out as their own thing. 2. Diamonds come in a variety of different shapes. Rough, uncut diamonds are most commonly a shape that I like to call "fucked up little cottonballs", tending towards octahedral (d8 shaped), to like, massive weird hunks of diamond found inside asteroids or whatever. 3. Most vintage diamonds have completely different cuts than is used for most modern ones; Including "Old Mine Cut" and "Old European Cut" diamonds that have this cut are basically not made anymore outside of extreme specialist stuff, making them kinda rare in their own way. Also of note is that there is a specific diamond cut that is heavily associated with the Art Deco style, that being the Square Emerald Cut or "Asscher" cut. (silly name I know but it looks fabulous) but in modern times only like ~2% of diamonds are cut in this cut, thus making "Art Deco Diamonds" pretty damn rare. 4. Not really a true point as I feel most people know this already but there are diamonds made by mankind, known as lab grown diamonds, which are able to be pretty much anything a diamond could ever "theoretically" be. They can be "too perfect" in that they can be of a very big size, perfectly and evenly saturated with perfect/near-perfect clarity, no inclusions, etc. The only things they don't reproduce are stuff that requires specialist equipment to see that makes pretty much no difference. The one big difference? Price. They tend to be way, way, way, way, way cheaper. Also should consider diamond alternatives like Cubic Zirconia (CZ), Ghostenite Goshenite (clear beryl!) and Moissanite (very sparkly, very pretty).

I understood what the clothes in "Archive" album version mean. Neos as artworks themselves, not art-collectors (there was no heist as fans speculated). 127 posed before museum shelves and crates because they were stored there.
So we have three ongoing themes for the clothes: neos in their dreamscape (chandelier), neos in a created dream/new virtual dimension as gods of Seoul (4 costume collections), neos as artworks to represent the A-track.
-------
I like when "I'm better than you" songs are supported by the level of success/fame an artist has. Just debuted/rookies idols shouldn't sing obnoxious songs, it comes off as laughable and unauthentic.
Fact Check's lyrics are pleasantly smart and in places poetic. The address to non-NCTzens is direct and truthful (actually go look up info, awards, charts, sold albums - stats). "Ohh, I'm enigma" In Korean sounds very cutting into memory, the word is tasty. And it's a cool rebranding (you call me weird, but you just can't understand the enigma).
I especially like these ones:
How you do that? Maybe it's DNA
Sassy.
2. Like Banksy, I transcend frames
Modern artist Banksy performed a famous stunt, when one of his works was shredded before the gathered buyers at an auction. The artwork literally left its frame. The act was the talk of the town. It seems that the event was widely covered in SK as G-Idle also referenced it.
Frames, boxes. Can't put 127 in a ready box. (Even if they work for money (sell themselves as Banksy sold his painting), they still do whatever they want? (as Banksy transformed the sold art into something new)).
3. Whichever way you look, gem's constantly aglitter Go on, cut me down, just refines my shine, babe
A diamond after cutting turns into a brilliant. The more cuts, the more facets, the brighter shine. I don't know if this comparison is used widely in song-writing, but it's a very nice reply to antis and defamation.
4. Engrave me endlessly, I flower into something new Something different, shattering every frame
Cut me with hurtful words, I will just change into a new art. I like the use of "flower into". It evokes a very vivid imagery of an opening flower. More and more facets/petals. Come to think of it, it also looks like an originally whole spherical bloom is cut into many many pieces that in the end present as something more beautiful than the flower bud.

INSIDE THE SOTHEBY’S PLATINUM JUBILEE TIARA EXHIBITION
07.31.2022 by THE COURTJEWELLER
Earlier this summer, Sotheby’s in London mounted a truly special exhibition of tiaras, featuring royal and aristocratic pieces alongside more modern examples. Several of our lucky readers were able to visit the exhibition and see the tiaras in person, and today, I’m honored to share some photos taken by our lovely reader Phyllis!
Tumblr media
Phyllis has generously shared a selection of her photographs, plus some of her observations about the exhibition. She notes that the presentation techniques used by Sotheby’s to present some of the diadems was truly ingenious: “The tiaras are either in cases where you can walk around 360 degrees and see them from all sides or are along the walls in niche cases. The tiaras in the niche cases actually float up and down and also spin, I spoke with a Sotheby’s employee about this and evidently the wall niches, which are actually secure vaults, use a patented technology to suspend and spin the tiaras. There are no strings! I think it must use air pressure changes to do this….it’s really cool.”
Here are two interesting tiaras are paired in a single case. The top sparkler is the Westminster Halo Tiara, made by Lacloche in 1930 for Loelia Ponsonby, the third wife of the 2nd Duke of Westminster. Sotheby’s notes that the tiara was designed “as a halo to be worn over the crown of the wearer’s head and extending outwards in the manner of a traditional Chinese headdress,” adding that it was “originally set with the Hastings and Arcot diamonds, now replaced with smaller diamonds, [and] flowers.
The second, smaller tiara in the display is a simpler silver bandeau-style tiara that dates to ca. 1920. Sotheby’s describes the jewel as “as an openwork bandeau of foliage and flowers, set at the centre with a cabochon emerald and with circular-cut sapphires and pink sapphire within the centres of the flowers.
Tumblr media
One of the most famous tiaras displayed in the exhibition was the Spencer Tiara, which we discussed at length here on the site a few days ago. It was made in 1937 for the Countess Spencer using a set of nineteenth-century ornaments, and it was most famously worn by Diana, Princess of Wales. Sotheby’s calls the tiara “one of the most famous diadems in modern history.” (It’s tough to disagree with that statement!) Phyllis shared that “it was a real thrill” to see the tiara in person, and that it was a highlight, along with another very important royal jewel, Queen Victoria’s Emerald and Diamond Tiara.
Tumblr media
I really love the photo that Phyllis took of the Rosebery Tiara. Her image shows the intense sparkle of the diamonds so clearly! Made in France ca. 1878, this tiara was given as a wedding present to Hannah Rothschild, the richest women in Britain, by her new husband, the 5th Earl of Rosebery. Sotheby’s explains that the tiara is “comprised of ornate scrollwork and foliate detailing in a graduated sequence of crescents within which large collet stones are set and flanked by foliate scrolls issuing stylised lilies, with a band interspersed with square and lozenge stones, set throughout with diamonds.”
Phyllis explained that she “loved seeing these tiaras in 360 views because the frames and attachments are just as interesting as the front views.” She added, “Most of them have detachable brooches and/or can be worn as necklaces. The mechanics used vary quite a bit from one tiara to the next and all are utterly unique. Some brooch backs have pin back attachments like modern jewelry but the older ones have spikes and clips.
Tumblr media
Here are two more tiaras that shared a case in the exhibition. (It’s so fun to think through the reasons that the curators paired up certain sparklers, isn’t it?) The top tiara is a diamond waveform tiara made by Cartier in 1904. Sotheby’s describes it as “a wreath of twinned sprays of leaves, set throughout with brilliant-cut diamonds, with pendant larger diamonds to suggest flowers, detachable into four brooches, accompanied by brooch fittings.”
The lower tiara is also a Cartier creation. Made in the 1920s, it’s a bandeau-style tiara set with diamonds, amethysts, sapphires, and onyx. Sotheby’s explains that the tiara, which was made in the firm’s Paris atelier, has a “geometric openwork design, set throughout with circular-cut diamonds and three large faceted buff-top amethysts, with cabochon sapphire and onyx panel accents.” You can see this one sparkling in motion on the Sotheby’s website as well.
Tumblr media
I love this dramatic photograph of the Derby Tiara, made around 1890, likely by Skinner & Co. This tiara has a fraternal twin: the Devonshire Diadem, made by the same firm in 1893. The Derby is slightly smaller than the Devonshire; Sotheby’s notes that the Devonshire version “features 13 palmette motifs,” while the Derby “is smaller and bears 11 palmette motifs.” Though Sotheby’s attributes the construction of the tiara to Skinner, the piece resides in a fitted Carrington & Co. Case.
Placed below the Derby Tiara is an unusual, asymmetrical tiara made ca. 1820: the Fitzwilliam Tiara. Sotheby’s explains that this early example of nineteenth-century tiara design is in “naturalist taste, designed as a long spray of flowers, leaves and buds forming a half circle, the front surmounted by crossed leafy stems centred and flanked by flowers.” The tiara is “detachable to be used as earrings and a brooch, [and] set throughout with cushion-, pear-shaped and circular-cut diamonds, with a back chain for converting the tiara as a necklace.” It’s fascinating to see the “bones” of the tiara’s construction in Phyllis’s photo.
Tumblr media
Here's a tiara in one of the “floating” cases described by Phyllis. Sold in an auction at Sotheby’s in 2021, this golden diadem was made by Jacques-Ambroise Oliveras ca. 1805. By family tradition of the longtime owners, the Lascelles family, the tiara and its coordinating jewels belonged to Empress Joséphine of France, perhaps gifts from her sister-in-law, Caroline Bonaparte Murat. Sotheby’s has published a lengthy essay on the provenance of the tiara and its connection to Joséphine and Caroline.
Tumblr media
And finally, we’ve got another set of jewels that particularly intrigued Phyllis: a turquoise and diamond tiara and necklace made in the 1960s by Van Cleef & Arpels. Sotheby’s notes that turquoise jewels like this suite were inspired by designs from India. And Phyllis shares even more information with us: “Another thing I learned is that the turquoise tiara has never been worn, only the necklace has been worn and just one or two times. Gem quality turquoise is a soft stone that discolors easily from body contact, hence these turquoise pieces being rarely or never worn. The uprights on that tiara also are removable and can be attached to the necklace as pendants, I think at the ‘flower base’ motif.

From LinkedIn - Rui Galopim de Carvalho
Aquamarine, the greenish blue to deep blue gem variety of beryl, has been recognised as a gemstone for many centuries, although its wide popularity became evident only in the early 20th century namely due to the remarkable finds of that period in Minas Gerais, Brasil and Semeninskaya, Urals. Interestingly, older aquamarines tend to have more green in the colour than modern ones, possibly due to the normalisation of the heat-treatment as now aquamarines are routinely heated between 300 and 700°C for a few hours to remove the yellow component of the color, turning a greenish-blue into a more desirable pure blue. Numerous jewellery creators, like Lalique or Fouquet for example in the dawn of the century as well as Cartier, mostly after the 1930s, used fine aquamarines. In the photos, an Art Deco aquamarine and diamond necklace made in the London’s Cartier workshop, dated circa 1940. It is a highly articulated platinum collar of geometric design, with colour-matched aquamarines, totalling 169.85 carats, accented with brilliant-cut diamonds, totalling approximately 9.64 carats. The central shield-shaped frontispiece detaches and may be worn as a clip. The necklace was presented at auction on Bonhams, London, in 2021 and it tripled its pre-sale estimate, selling for £459,000 (ca. $600,000). Photos © Bonhams

The Asscher diamond features long facets, a high crown, and a smaller table, so it shines more brilliantly than emerald-shaped diamonds.
