Design of Midhope Distillery
The parts of document I'm showing in this post was presented and designed on June 26, 2020
Tumblr media
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This Design and Access Statement accompanies a Planning Applica- tion for a new Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery at Midhope Castle which lies within the Hopetoun Estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh. It is intended this is the first of a series of applications containing proposals to regenerate the Castle, the surrounding listed buildings and landscape setting.
The overall project aims to create an environment to produce, share and market an exceptional whisky. Its success depends not just on the production of whisky but on the ability to invite guests to see the creative process, appreciate its origins and have the time to experi- ence the whisky and the environment. It is intended in the future that the castle will be the venue for a significant part of these activities.

Note, the clients Golden Decanters and Hopetoun estate are the original applicants. Golden Decanters changed their company name since April 2022

LOCATION
The site is approximately 11.5 miles West of the City of Edinburgh, 5 miles to the North West of Edinburgh airport, 3.5 miles to the West of the South Queensferry, and a little under half a mile South of the Firth of Forth. It has an overall area of 6.9 hectares within the beautifully managed Hopetoun Estate. Hopetoun House is approximately 1 mile East of the site.
Tumblr media
SITE
The site is located within Hopetoun Estate but outside the area of the Designated Designed Landscape that surrounds Hopetoun House and Abercorn to the east. The site for the new distillery is located to the immediate west of Midhope Castle.
The Castle is reached via an access road runs for approximately a quarter of a mile, west from the road link between the hamlet of Ab- ercorn and the A904.
The site to the east of the Midhope Burn is largely dense woodland. A Fireworks manufacturing business is currently located in a large clearing near the entrance to the site. This clearing was formerly the location of a Saw Mill.
The access road arrives at a small car park. There is a path that leads to the outer wall of the Castle courtyard.
Tumblr media
Midhope Castle is to the north-east of the site with a courtyard and a modest walled garden to the immediate South. Behind the castle, just to the north, is a small derelict Victorian, ancillary building.
In the space to the east of the castle toward the approach road there are two Victorian cottages and a doocot.
The site for the distillery building is to the south-west of the cas- tle and in an area that is currently occupied by a number of modern agricultural sheds and some hard-standing left from recent utilitarian ancillary structures. The area is functional and has no obvious sig- nificant historic structures. It currently houses the grounds for a tree climbing and chainsaw training company which is in the process of relocating.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HERITAGE CONTEXT
The original Midhope Castle (recorded as “Medhope Castle”) was built in the late 15th century. In 1587 this castle was partially rebuilt.
The castle was extended in 1664 and reached the general arrange- ment and form that can be seen today. Further extensions and altera- tions took place in 1678.
By the early 20th century the castle was in a state of disrepair and the interior timber staircase recorded as being in poor condition.
In 1988 a programme of consolidation and partial restoration was undertaken. A new roof was formed on the West Tower and steelwork was inserted within the shell of the castle to stabilse the structure. New window frames were inserted into the existing openings. This work seems to have arrested any further significant deterioration.
Today the building is in a ruinous state internally, and most of the in- ternal features have been lost, but is generally wind and water tight.
Midhope Castle was designated as a Scheduled Monument in 1950 and was given a Category A listing in 1971 . In 2018 the Scheduled Monument status was removed and the designation was simplified to the current Category A listing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Roy Lowlands map of 1754 shows the castle within the wider context of the Hopetoun House Estate. To the north of the castle are a series of geometrically arranged copses either side of an axis that relates to Hopetoun House to the west. Today some of these trees are still visible.
The landscape around Midhope Castle is also visible on this plan - the series of walls that form the courtyard at the castle, and the larger open area to the west.
Tumblr media
The 6 inch map of 1854 more shows Midhope Castle in the form that it can be seen today. The approach path from the east, the Doocot, the gamekeeper’s cottage and the walled garden to the south of the castle are visible.
This plan also shows the state of the landscape to the west of the castle. A path or track extended out from the courtyard into the land- scape and a series of gardens were enclosed to the north.
The south edge of the site was defined by a row of trees that aligned with the walled garden.
The remaining traces of these landscape structures have informed the location of the new distillery building and the landscape strategy.
Tumblr media
MASTERPLAN APPROACH
The current application is the first in a series of planned phased pro- posals for the site that will initially improve the setting, and stabilise the fabric, of the castle, and later seek to reuse and regenerate the castle.
The construction of the distillery and the production of the whisky need to be the first steps in order to establish the business and generate income in order to progress to the next phases of the wider project.
In the medium term there are also plans to open parts of the castle to facilitate some of visitors who currently visit the site due to the castle’s association with the “Outlander” television series.
There is the ultimate aim to use the castle for visitor functions that are complimentary to the new distillery – tasting spaces, dining, and potentially overnight accommodation.
All of these future works will carefully balance the repair and refur- bishment of the existing historical fabric of the castle and surround- ing landscape features. Further refinement of the timing and content of these next phases will reviewed as the project develops.
Tumblr media
VISION
Initial works
The current Planning Application is for the new distillery building together with the immediate landscaping, a new access road and the change of use of Midhope Castle to visitor accommodation.
An application for Listed Building Consent will follow. This will include the repair and refurbishment works to the landscape features around the castle- the reinstatement of the damaged stone piers, the re- gaining of the walled garden and cobbled castle forecourt and the potential removal of derelict outbuildings. It has not been possible to gain access to the site to carry out these surveys due to restrictions imposed by the Covid 19 crisis.
Next steps
Future Planning Applications and Listed Building Applications are planned as the business becomes established. These include plans for a Maltings Building at the former Sawmill site, work to the castle and extensions as appropriate, repurposing of the Dovecot, and other facilities in the grounds of the castle and distillery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SCOPE OF INITIAL PHASE
It is possible to conceptually divide the site into two areas, they can broadly be described as modern farm building land and the castle grounds. It is not intended that the physical distinction between the areas be over emphasised in the finished design but it is a useful tool in describing the approaches to the specific areas. The distillery is proposed to be on the farm building land, with the main road and the access road coming across the castle grounds.
The farm building land does not have any obvious structures of histor- ic significance, whilst the castle grounds are rich with elements that are historically significant and referred to in the category A listing of the castle and the Category B listing of the Doocot.
The historic influence on the farm building land is most strongly ap- parent in its relationship to the castle grounds. The land spreads in a relatively level expanse from the castle and forms the base of an approximate bowl. This reinforces the sense that the area that will house the distillery, despite being the larger area, is attendant on the castle as the most substantial historic structure on the site.
Very little work is proposed to the immediate castle grounds in this application. The client wishes to take the time to carefully consider the appropriate design and relationship with the existing buildings. The intention is to intervene in this area as little as possible at this point and only to the extent that is required to access the distillery site without negatively affecting the significant historic fabric.
The castle grounds are subject to ongoing analysis and will be the focus of future applications in subsequent phases.
Tumblr media
DESIGN PROPOSALS
The distillery is seens as the first phase of a sequence of develop- ments on the wider site aimed at enriching the landscape and improv- ing the setting and fabric of Midhope Castle.
The aspiration is to create a unique place where the production of Whisky, the landscape it draws from and the heritage of the site can be enjoyed. The setting and location is key to the proposal.
The new distillery building will have two main functions. It will pro- duce over 500,000 litres of whisky a year from Barley grown on the Estate. It will also offer visitors the opportunity to see all aspects of the Whisky production process and to enjoy the unique historical set- ting and landscape.
The setting of the distillery is one that has many layers of history. It will be close to Midhope Castle, which is known to date from the fif- teenth century and along with the land around has been altered many times over the subsequent years. The castle was occupied until the 1920s and each periodw has resulted in change. The additions to the castle are clear to see, and there are buildings around the castle that date from the 1800s. The setting shows a timeline of agricultural use and castle shows evidence of the varied occupation that ranges from aristocracy to the workers on the land.
The castle is the embodiment of the historic significance of the site, and this position is to be carefully maintained. The orientation of the new design is lead by the influence of the existing fabric. It’s form will have a larger footprint but a lower height, it will not compete with the castle but rather work alongside it, and by looking toward the castle’s raised entrance create an exciting new dynamic.
Tumblr media
SETTING & ACCESS
The approach to the site will be along the existing track which winds through dense woodland to a clearing that is currently used as a car park for visitors to the castle.
From here a new access route is proposed to take service traffic for the distillery to the south, away from the castle and existing cottages.
The existing footpath leads up to the castle courtyard past the listed dovecot building and existing Victorian cottage and outbuildings to the north.
The courtyard sits between the castle and the overgrown walled gar- den to the south. To the west of this enclosed outdoor space is the open area currently given over to light industrial and agricultural use. This largely flat area of land sits within a shallow depression relative to the surrounding wider agricultural landscape. This will be the site of the new distillery.
The distillery begins to be visible on moving through the courtyard. The new building will align with the traces of an route that once ran through this area out to the west.
Tumblr media
SETTING & RESPONSE
The new building consists of three, simple shed-like forms.
The largest is a long, pitched roof building that edges the south of the site. This building will contain most of the distillery production areas and spaces for visitors – a display area containing whisky ma- turing in barrels, tasting spaces, and multi-purpose areas that can be used for exhibitions and functions.
To the north is a second smaller pitched roof form that contains the stills and shelters the worm tubs.
To the south a third pitched roof form encloses external tanks and barrel storage.
A service yard is located to the south of the distillery and sits be- tween the new building and the existing embankment. The service yard and the more industrial activity is hidden from view from the surrounding landscape and most importantly is invisible from the ap- proach road and castle. Access to the service yard will be provided by a new road formed to the south of the main site.
The public areas of the distillery will offer views back to the castle and the landscape to the north. The landscape around the distillery will reinstate paths and routes that we once on the site.
Tumblr media
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
The basic form of the new building has been influenced by common simple, robust utilitarian agricultural buildings. From a distance the distillery will appear as a grouping of simple, quiet forms in the land- scape.
The still house will be wrapped in timber giving it an abstract quality. This building will contain the stills and their copper forms will be vis- ible through the glazed gable facing the castle courtyard.
The still house sits in a cooling pond and forms a gathering place at the visitor entrance to the distillery. This entrance aligns with both the reinstated road and wall running east to west but also with the existing track that leaves the site to the north.
A large framed window on the first floor of the distillery offers pano- ramic views back to the castle, across the structured landscape close to the distillery and further to the agriculutral fields of the estate beyond. These large windows will be edged in bronze metal cladding,
The maturation display area at the east end of the building will be clad in stained or charred slatted timber that will allow in direct light into the space. On dark evenings this end of the building will glow and act as a lantern drawing visitors across the landscape from the castle.

As I showed in my previous post, these plans are now revised and filed again on 8 February 2024, awaiting a decision. This document was filed on 21 March 2024. There are some minor changes to the original plans which were already approved in 2021

A quick six-decade history of BBC's Doctor Who
The 23rd of November, 2023, marks the 60th anniversary of BBC's flagship TV series, Doctor Who. From Classic Who to Modern Who, from William Hartnell to Jodie Whitaker, the megahit TV series became the hallmark of the sci-fi genre since its 1963 airing and evolved into a mixed media project that served as one of the BBC's success stories.
With only two days left before the first part of the Doctor Who 60th-anniversary specials airing on BBC in the UK and on the Disney+ streaming service globally, how did we go from here? The past, present, and future of the Doctor Who series?
Tumblr media
Classic Who - Aired on the BBC on November 23rd, 1963, William Hartnell is the very first actor to play The Doctor in the said series, forever laying the foundation of the Doctor Who series. The Classic Who era welcomed the most iconic Doctors in TV history from Hartnell to Sylvester McCoy, a memorable cast of characters, monsters, and a rogue gallery of villains ranging from Daleks, Cybermen, and even his arch nemesis, The Master. Seven classic Doctors (William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy) are forever known as legends not just in the franchise but in the entire TV sci-fi genre.
16 years of void - The Sylvester McCoy era became the final era of the Classic Who and when the TV show was laid to rest in 1989, it left a 16-year void before its 2005 comeback. Of course, the whole Doctor Who team tried bringing it back on May 27, 1996, with a TV movie aired on FOX, starring Paul McGann as The Doctor, but feels like the comeback didn't work as expected.
2005 return - On March 26, 2005, Doctor Who is back on the telly after a 16-year absence. With Russell T Davies serving as the showrunner and actor Christopher Eccleston playing the role of The Doctor, the 2005 revival signaled the start of the Modern Who era. Joining Eccleston is Billie Piper who plays the role of his companion, Rose Tyler, the two witnessed how the world ended, facing off against the Daleks, preventing world catastrophe, and uncovering the truth.
Greatest Doctor of All Time? - Christopher Eccleston's reign as The Doctor lasted for 13 episodes, the entire first season of the reborn Doctor Who TV series, and got replaced by actor David Tennant at the season finale. Making his first moves at the 2005 Christmas Special, David Tennant cemented his status as the GOAT in the Modern Who times. In fact, Tennant's making a comeback in the 60th anniversary special as the 14th Doctor! This marks the first in the Doctor Who franchise a Doctor actor doing two non-consecutive terms.
Teaming alongside Piper as Rose, Freema Agyeman as Martha, and John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness aside, the most popular companion in the David Tennant years is none other than Donna Noble, played by comedienne Catherine Tate. First met at the 2006 Christmas special, the two reunite at the beginning of the fourth season and with past companions collide, including the late Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, a legend companion from the Classic Who times, it showcased the show's exploding popularity.
New Decade, New Who - David Tennant's time ended at the beginning of 2010, and with Russell T Davies stepped down from his showrunner duties, Steven Moffat took over and actor Matt Smith filled in the shoes of The Doctor, signaling the new era of Doctor Who. From The Eleventh Hour to The Time of The Doctor, the Matt Smith years shifted the Doctor Who era to a more family-friendly approach.
During his tenure, the Matt Smith years of Doctor Who introduced companions such as Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, Arthur Darvill as Rory Williams, and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. Actress Alex Kingston, who showed up in the David Tennant years as River Song, popped up as well, showing her origin story and her shocking relationship with Amy and Rory.
After the 2013 Christmas Special, Smith was replaced by Peter Capaldi, showing off his darker undertones while keeping the mantra of protecting the universe by all means. Apart from teaming up with Jenna Coleman as Clara, the Peter Capaldi years welcomed Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts and comedian Matt Lucas as Nardole, who first appeared in the 2015 Christmas Special.
Fast fact that both Gillan and Capaldi got their early stints in the DW Season 4 episode titled The Fires of Pompeii.
50 years of DW - November 23rd, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who and to celebrate that occasion, a 50th-anniversary TV special, titled The Day of The Doctor, was aired. The Doctors, played by Matt Smith and David Tennant, joined forces with their mysterious predecessor known as The War Doctor, played by the late John Hurt, who popped up at the end of the 7th season. Racing against time, the three Doctors join forces to save the universe.
Long before the explosive 50th-anniversary special went on air, a biopic titled An Adventure of Space and Time was aired, starring David Bradley as William Hartnell, the 1st Doctor. Also, a Doctor Who web short was streamed, showcasing the 8th Doctor getting regenerated into The War Doctor, filling the void that was left after the 1996 TV movie.
Breaking the series' boundaries - The Peter Capaldi years signaled the final time Steven Moffat served as the showrunner and their time ended in the 2017 Christmas Special, Twice Upon A Time, which featured Bradley as The 1st Doctor, Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall took over the series as the showrunner. Breaking the series' boundaries, the 11th season of Doctor Who welcomed the series' first female Doctor, Jodie Whitaker. During her four-year tenure from 2018 to 2022, the 13th Doctor joined forces with Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole), Yaz Khan (Mandip Gill), Graham O'Brien (Bradley Walsh), and Dan Lewis (John Bishop). Together, they've faced numerous enemies, new and old, including the reborn Master (played by Sacha Dhawan), while learning the truth about The Doctor's origins.
Loose ends? - As the Jodie Whitaker years came to an end, it was announced that actor Ncuti Gatwa would take over the role of The Doctor, but first, David Tennant will reprise his Doctor role in the 60th-anniversary specials. Why bring Tennant back to Who? Unanswered questions between The Doctor and Donna Noble after the end of the Season 4 finale. With them returning in the three-part specials, they have one loose end to mend before The Doctor can attain his true regeneration, and that's what the world awaits.
Spin-offs and mixed media - The Whoniverse expands outside the world of Doctor Who with official spin-offs featuring iconic characters and settings such as the R-rated spin-off series, Torchwood, which stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper, among others, the kid-friendly The Sarah Jane Adventures where DW legend Elisabeth Sladen reprises her Sarah Jane Smith role and teams up with a group of kids battling alien threats, and then there's Class, which is set at Coal Hill High, the same school appeared in the world of Doctor Who. Word from the outside world is there was a TV show called K-9, which features The Doctor's robot ally K-9 in its entirely new form.
TV shows aside, the Whoniverse also expands outside the TV screens in the form of comic books, novels, audio dramas, and others. One such example is the Doom's Day project which features a mysterious character named Doom as she spreads across the Whoniverse from comic books to audio dramas, racing for her life to find The Doctor. The Doom's Day project is part of Doctor Who's six-decade celebrations.
Six decades of Doctor Who, no, the Whoniverse. The past, present, and future of the Whoniverse will never stop expanding and as the world prepares for the show's 60th-anniversary specials and the imminent arrival of the new Doctor, expect brilliant things to come in the Whoniverse.
Happy 60th anniversary to the Whoniverse!

1990s House Playlist
Oh my god, it’s finally here, a 1990s house playlist for Spotify! I’ve had a YouTube one going for a while now, but I finally cobbled enough songs together to constitute a Spotify playlist. And that should tell you, that when it comes to dope 90s house gems, Spotify simply sucks shit!
Anyway, is this a comprehensive look at all of 1990s house music? Not in any way, shape, or form; not yet, at least. But, as its currently constituted, is this a playlist that’s comprised of a broad range of thirteen awesome house tracks that range from being marginally deep to huge party jams? And are a lot of these tracks also unrecognized or almost entirely forgotten? Absolutely, one-hundred percent, yes! I mean, there’s a big summertime jam to close this thing out that’s a remix by the Rhythm Masters of The Art of Noise’s “Metaforce” and it even has one of the greatest rappers of all time on it too—Rakim. And that song has less than 1,000 plays on Spotify! Absolutely criminal!
So, most of these songs are pretty obscure and also great, but there’s still a couple rather large exceptions: One song you’re likely to be familiar with is the MK remix of Nightcrawlers’ “Push the Feeling On.” And if you don’t know that, then surely you’ve heard the Pitbull hit that samples the hell out of it, 2009′s “Hotel Room Service.” Because while house music is largely ephemeral and most everyone’s always seemingly on to the next thing, “Push the Feeling On” is one of those songs that people always go back to. And I’d say the same for the Balearic classic, “Beachball” by Nalin & Kane, though to a much lesser extent; “Push the Feeling On” has over 116 million plays and “Beachball” has over 24 million on Spotify.
And “Afterglow” by Digital Boogie might sound kind of familiar too. That’s because it samples the same parts from Change’s “The Glow of Love” that the global dance super-hit, “Turn Around” by Phats & Small, does. But “Afterglow” actually came out the year before “Turn Around” did. And guess what else? “Afterglow” is another song that has less than 1,000 plays on Spotify! And Digital Boogie is listed as only having five listeners per month! Ridiculous!
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible and links are provided below to songs that have been posted about previously in order to give them more context:
THK - “France (Saturn Mix)” Robert Armani - “Circus Bells (Remixed By Hardfloor)” Paul Johnson - “3rd Dimension (Remixed By Armando)” Nightcrawlers - “Push the Feeling On (MK Dub Revisited)” Ruffneck - “Everybody Be Somebody (Mousse T’s Back in the Days mix)” New Soul Fusion - “Prelude” Bradock - “Atom Funk (Mission Mix)” Nalin & Kane - “Beachball (Vocal radio edit)” Human Arts - “Big Sur Highway” Make Some Break Some - “Nightshift” Digital Boogie - “Afterglow” Jon Silva - “I’ve Had Enough” The Art of Noise - “Metaforce (The Beat of a Metaphor)”
But wait, I have a slew of bonus tracks up on YouTube too! Like I said, Spotify sucks for 90s house music; my 1990s House playlist on YouTube has more than double the songs that my Spotify one does. So here’s a list of all the dope shit that’s only exclusive to the YouTube one. It has Nightmares on Wax, Dave Angel, a great groovy remix by French duo Motorbass, a couple dynamite remixes of Wildchild by Todd Edwards and Stretch N’ Vern, Dimitri From Paris, a remix of Blaze by Eight Miles High, and the legendary disco producer Giorgio Moroder remixing UK new wave and synthpop band Heaven 17.
Tasti Box - “San Francisco” Coco Steel & Lovebomb - “You Can’t Stop the Groove” Nightmares On Wax - “Happiness” Jaco - “Show Some Love (Original Dub Remix)” Solitaire Gee - “Slumberland” Dave Angel - “1st Symphony” Norma Jean Bell - “Baddest Bitch (Motorbass Mix)” Wildchild - “Jump to My Beat (Todd Edward's mix)” Dimitri From Paris - “Just About Right (Full Length)” Blaze - “Lovelee Dae (Eight Miles High Mix)” Wildchild - “Renegade Master (S'n'V Renegade Moonmen edit mix)” Daisy Glow - “Right On! (User Friendly mix)” Heaven 17 - “Designing Heaven (Giorgio Moroder's Subterranean 12")” Care Company - “Vol. 2″ Nerio’s Dubwork Meets Kathy Lee - “K-Mart Shopping (Hi-Fi Mix)”
Playlist is also on YouTube Music.
Also, there’s one song that’s currently on Spotify and not on YouTube: Armando’s remix of Paul Johnson’s “3rd Dimension.” So I’m afraid that you’re just gonna have to check out both Spotify and YouTube playlists to get this full house package here 😁.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

Not only is this an objectively lovely piece of music to listen to, it’s also pretty interesting because of who composed it and where.  The composer is Samuel Alman, a Russian-born composer and synagogue choirmaster who spent the bulk of his career in the UK.  Among many other things, Alman was the last editor of the Blue Book.  He oversaw the 1933 edition, expanding it with a supplement that contained quite a bit of his own music.  That edition, as far as I can tell, was the last one.  The Blue Book survives, in PDF form online, in a few remaining physical copies, and most importantly, in the memories and voices of British synagogue-goers; a portion of the Blue Book music has entered Anglo-Jewish folk tradition.
This piece hasn’t, and it’s because of the setting.  Alman is using a style here that you wouldn’t be at all surprised to hear coming from the pen of someone like Master Max Janowski.  He’s got a hazzan supported by a mixed-voice choir.  That style was quite popular in the US -- witness most of Janowski’s best work, for example -- but it didn’t really take off as much in the UK.  British Reform synagogues let their hazzanim go after the war, and the United Synagogue cracked down on the mixed-voice choirs starting around 1947.  Each movement was left with only one element needed to perform something like this.
Which is why it may not be so surprising that the group singing it here is from the Belsize Square Synagogue, which is non-denominational and employs both a hazzan and a couple of choirs.  Under the baton of Ben Wolf, they showcase this kind of music, and their services are a joy to hear.

Building on success
Paul Lai is one of MBE UK & Ireland’s longest-serving franchise partners. He started his career in distribution, managing warehouses and inventory, and had been running a sub-Post Office and office supplies business before he opened his Letchworth centre in September 1999.
Tumblr media
Paul, who has a master’s degree in distribution and graduated as an industrial engineer, explains that he had been developing a plan of something very similar to the MBE business model, which is why he was initially attracted to the franchise opportunity. Then, as now, the mix of print and copy, mailbox rental, shipping and courier services provided a broad appeal for businesses and consumers alike. “That’s why I decided that instead of doing it on my own, I would go with MBE,” says Paul.
He enjoyed the challenge of running his Letchworth store. “Back then, my intention was never to open other stores. I just wanted to make sure I stayed connected with how the business was run.” Talking about the changes he has seen since 1999, Paul says. “It has changed over time, of course. But when I first started, MBE was going down the route of automation. Now, of course, automation is coming back, so in some ways it feels as though we have gone full circle.
“In economic terms, I think things are similar now to the way they were in the late 90s. But one of the challenges we face today is that there are a lot of copycats in the marketplace.” Key differentiators for MBE are its 140+ high-street centres offering the biggest choice of leading carriers, together with specialist services such as the design of both digital and physical marketing resources, plus its white-glove Auction Logistics offering for buyers and sellers of fine art, antiques and collectables.
Tumblr media
Spotting an opportunity
Paul’s knowledge and expertise as a franchise partner led to his becoming an area developer for MBE’s northern home counties group of stores.
“I support all new franchise partners during the period leading up to the opening of their stores and give them ongoing support. We do get a lot of interest, and it’s a case of ensuring applicants understand what’s involved, the work they need to put in, and how they can build their business into something that will bring them the income they’re looking for.
“There are a lot of opportunities right now, as some of the longer-established franchise partners are coming up to retirement.” As an entrepreneur, Paul keeps his eye on the property market, which is how he spotted that a shop in Northampton was coming up for sale. “It was in the right location at a reasonable price, so I grabbed it,” he explains.
“The location means it has a lot of potential to become a high-performing store. The community in Northampton is very loyal to local businesses and they do prefer to buy locally if possible. People there are very friendly and they value the businesses that are prepared to build lasting relationships with them. Gold Street, where the new store is located, used to be the high street in Northampton. It’s still a great location with lots of thriving stores, which means it has plenty of footfall. With a university about three miles down the road and lots of local businesses, this location has plenty of potential.”
Paul’s advice to new MBE franchise partners looking to create a successful centre is that strong relationships are key success. “Build relationships not only with your customers, but across the whole business,” he says.
“Whether you are looking to open a new centre or acquire an existing one, the energy you put into sales prospecting, coupled with support from your area developer and MBE head office teams, will help your business grow more quickly.
“Tap into all the seminars and training that are offered by the head office team and make the most of all their marketing activity. And finally, remember to watch your cashflow. That’s vital.”
MBE Northampton opens on 9th October. To find out more about the store, including the full address, telephone number and opening times, click here.

The first time I met Travis Maxwell, he thought I was a damsel in distress. We spent a glorious week together, knowing that we'd go our separate ways in the end.
One month later, two blue lines turn my life upside down.
I'm pregnant. And the number Travis gave me is no longer in service.
Hurt and shocked, I do the right thing and track him down. We agree to be friends, nothing more, and to raise our child. Easier said than done.
Travis transforms from a master flirt to a caveman, intent on protecting me, and our unborn baby. He spoils me and tends to all my cravings: including supplying my favorite cupcakes on demand and watching Netflix with me.
As we bicker about which season of Bridgerton is better, he suddenly tells me that he wants me.
That he needs me. And I need him too.
But I want him to want me for me, not just because of the baby.
But I fear he's mixing up his feelings and I don't think that's the right recipe for forever …

A-T-3 228 Project Future - Ray-Gun-Omics
Ray-Gun-Omics by Project Future is probably best known in the UK for its appearance on Electro 1 the beloved Street Sounds compilation series
It was written and produced by the team behind George Clinton's Atomic Dog and Loopzilla, namely David Spradley, Ted Currier, and Rahni Harris, along with David and Debbie Sandridge of the Dayton funk group Dayton. Rahni Harris and Ted Currier had worked on Dayton's Hot Fun and Feel The Music albums and before Atomic Dog the Xavier project (Work That Sucker To Death) with Bootsy Collins and George Clinton
Sadly Ted Currier passed away the other day. Before was a writer, arranger, and producer Ted Currier had been an influential radio DJ in New York. His innovative mixes were the inspiration for Shep Pettibone's Mastermixes
Ray-Gun-Omics is a riff on Reaganomics, Ronald Reagan's disastrous economic policies of increased defence spending and reduced government spending as preached by Milton Friedman. Grand Master Flash And The Furious Five's global hit The Message had come out the year before, it wasn't the first conscious rap record but it was the first to sell well. From Gill Scott-Heron to The Last Poets overtly political tracks like Ray-Gun-Omics were well established
The other week I read Robert Lekachman's Capitalism For Beginners comic book, I've read the series since I was a kid and I was surprised I'd not read Capitalism, what interested me was it had been published in 1981 (and it only cost 50p) which was Margret Thatchers first term and the year Reagan becomes 40th president of the United States
Before I get into why I believe Capitalism For Beginners is still relevant (for beginners) I want to mention another book, albeit an unfinished one. In the 1920s and throughout the 30s at roughly the same time Fredrick Hayek is writing papers that will influence monetarism, the economic policy of Thatcher and Reagan, Walter Benjamin is working on his Arcades Project. Benjamin saw the Paris arcades, the city's first shopping malls built not long after the French Revolution in the early nineteenth century to serve the burgeoning middle-class and upper-class, as the origin of and a way of seeing the present (Benjamin was influential in the work of John Berger.) Benjamin identifies the heyday of the Paris arcades as birthplace of consumerism and ephemerality, the arcades sold fashions to service our dreams and seduce our momentary desires. What the people who walked the Paris arcades in the early nineteenth century wouldn't have known at the time was that most of the arcades would be demolished within fifty years, 24 of over 150 remain, this was just a fleeting moment necessary for capitalism, fashions become passé, the once highly fashionable arcades that were left soon became old fashioned. Historical enquiry can reveal something about ourselves. In the last two or three decades property developers have realised the two hundred year old Paris arcades can achieve premium rents. Nostalgia, uniqueness, and 19th century grandeur are all assets to tourism in an age of irresponsibly cheap flights and weekend get aways, when most cities look remarkably like each other (the arcades are featured in magazines and newspapers around the world.) The tarting up of the façades of the Paris arcades are also the result of financialisation that begun in the 1980s and the consequential deindustrialization of many European cities (especially France and the UK)
I write a blog about music from 40-years-ago I do this because I want to understand the present. The same can be said for why I enjoyed reading a super simple comic book on capitalism written over 42-years-ago. As I've mentioned Capitalism For Beginners was written as Thatcher was implementing monetarism in the UK to deal with stagflation, like today inflation was high, it had been rarely below 10% for a few years and was at 15% when Thatcher got in. The book tries to address the future of capitalism and it predicts what happened while Thatcher was PM pretty well, privatisation, corporate government partnerships, increased profits to investors, offshoring and exploitation of tax loopholes, new private monopolies, tax benefits and securities for corporations, the destruction of unions, rising unemployment, the bare minimum of welfare if you're not already rich or a corporation, redistribution of income away from labour towards property leading to abundant supply and inadequate purchasing power, the myth of trickle-down economics. Blair's reforms are also predicted as a hybrid form of monetarism and even Brexit and Trump and the immigrant shaped scapegoat. Lekachman didn't foresee the full damage of monetarism though, over a decade of austerity, short term planning and long term defunding; revolving doors between government, financial institutions, and the media; precarious job security, zero hours contracts, fire and rehire, and the gig economy; abandonment of unprofitable infrastructure maintenance; risks and costs paid for by the public and profits funnelled board members, shareholders, corporations and consortiums; a sluggish often hostile response to climate uncertainty. As a final caveat the writer comments that when capitalism can no longer satisfy the interests of working people they will become more politically engaged and demand for better. But Lekachman didn't count on news reporting becoming entertainment, serious mainstream journalism disappearing, and the public becoming increasingly politically illiterate. Monetarism is commonly associated with neoliberalism. It's astonishing to think we've had almost fifty years of neoliberalism, despite regular crises. Capitalism's golden era after WW2 didn't last much more than twenty years
Project Future
With a general election sometime in the next 17 months and inflation still high both the UK's main political parties are laying out economic visions for the country. These visions are weak and uncreative. It sounds to my ears that the leaders of our political parties are saying there is no alternative than make everyone poorer and the rich richer. There is an alternative though, tax the rich. Why has this been thrown out by both Sir Keir and billionheir Sunak? Talk of a wage-price spiral is convenient for a government faced with angry doctors, nurses, teachers and all the other professions who are now demanding wage increases inline with inflation after years of seeing their wages fall to the point where they are not covering the cost of living. The reality is the vicious circle is between prices and profits, to say that we are in a cost of living crisis is as helpful as Sunak saying the credit card has been maxed out, we are in a profit crisis, where's the fiscal responsibility in that Sir Keir?
Like the monetarists Sunak believes in market freedom (which isn't really free if you take in all the tax breaks and lobbying, offshoring, second jobs by members of parliament etc) he's not about to intervene and do the sensible thing by introducing price controls and enforcing regulatory action to curb monopoly power and financial speculation. I've heard people say maybe Labour will do this in their second term but that sounds suspicious
The City says we need to squeeze more out of the public. After thirteen years of austerity is there anything more to squeeze? Jeremy Hunt has admitted a recession is an acceptable price to pay to to bring inflation down and both the government and Bank of England have no qualms about deliberately putting peoples livelihoods at risk... that Sunak's approach to the economy is called Market Moralism is a sick joke
