City Skyline on Harbor Waterfront
Location: Bankoku Bridge, Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan Timestamp: 19:56 March 15, 2023
This photograph captures the stunning night view of the Minatomirai waterfront district, as seen from the Bankoku Bridge. Originally constructed in 1903 and surviving the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, the current span was rebuilt in 1940. The name "Bankokubashi" translates to "bridge to 10,000 countries," which reflects its early significance in facilitating international trade through the Port of Yokohama.
Initially, the bridge served as the primary access point to the newly reclaimed land used for the Port of Yokohama and the customs house. Today, it has become a popular attraction for tourists and photographers seeking a picturesque view of the Minatomirai skyline. Furthermore, the Bankoku Bridge is one of the main entry points to the Red Brick Warehouse quarter.
The image also shows a long-exposure shot of the vibrant, rainbow-colored lights of passenger pods on the Yokohama Air Cabin urban ropeway connecting Sakuragicho Station with the World Porter’s department store. The ropeway, which started operating in April 2021, is the latest addition to the waterfront skyline.

8/7-8.Mon and Tues.2017 I head for Tokyo after work to see my orthodontist doctor in Yokohama. The departure of the flight was delayed and I took the Skyliner from Narita. I could check in the hostel at 11:30 pm. It was cheap but comfortable hostel for me. I'd like to stay there again. I left the hostel before 8 and head for Yokohama. I took a good consultation with Dr Kamei. He gave me a lot of time for interview even if there were many people waiting for him. Unexpectedly the interview finished around 11 am. I already booked the last flight which departure time is 19:55 at Haneda airport. I decided to enjoy this trip and went to Minatomirai area. I went there a few times, but I'm glad to have an experience. It was so hot that I got sweat much. I visited red brick buildings and a cup ramen museum. After a short trip, I head for the airport. I arrived there early ,got a latte at Starbucks and wrote message cards for my coworkers.

Blue Hour on the Waterfront
Two shots of The Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama where guests on the upper floors have panoramic views of the Port of Yokohama. The hotel has the appearance of three structures, but is actually two hotels in one: The Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama, which is for the general public, and the Yokohama Bay Court Club Hotel & Spa Resort, which is a members-only resort hotel.
The wave-like exterior compliments the yacht-sail design of the InterContinental Yokohama Grand, which is located about 600 meters south (approx. 1,969 ft.). The glass facade presents   photographers with beautiful subject to shoot as light reflecting off of the building changes colors throughout the day.

Apartment Towers & Hotel Skyline
Rinko Park offers lots of open space and shaded spaces as well making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. From the middle of the park, we can see the beautiful architecture of The Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama and Yokohama Bay Court Club Hotel & Spa Resort.
Inspiration for the exterior wave-like designs of the three structures is the famous woodblock print “Under the Wave off Kanagawa” (Kanagawa oki nami ura), also known as “The Great Wave,” from the series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (Fugaku sanjūrokkei) by the renowned Katsushika Hokusai ca. 1830–32.

City Park at Dusk
Looking south from the center of Rinko Park, you can see the top floors of Yokohama’s tallest high-rise apartment building, The Tower Yokohama Kitanaka. The tower is a 58-story building with 1,176 condos with upper-floor prices rising as high as 800 million yen (approx. $5.6 million USD). I am always amazed how engineers are able to build such tall structures in such an earthquake-prone country as Japan.
Closer to the park, however, is the gorgeous InterContinental Yokohama Grand. This luxury hotel is one of the more famous landmarks of Yokohama’s waterfront district with its unique exterior that resembles a yacht sail billowing in the wind.

Traditional Japanese Yakatabune Boat
Location: Kishimachi Promenade, Minatomirai, Yokohama Timestamp: 20:18 on July 23, 2011
Nikon D3100 + NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 300 mm ISO 100 for 1/320 sec. at ƒ/8
Although captured more than a decade ago in 2011, I still find joy in the elegant pleasure boats navigating the intricate canals that flow into the Port of Yokohama on Tokyo Bay.
Despite the grainy texture and abundant noise in the photograph, the harmonious color palette continues to be a visual delight to my eyes.
Historical records harking back to the Heian Period (794 to 1185) mention the existence of pleasure boats, a domain primarily enjoyed by nobles who reveled in poetry, music, and dining along rivers and ponds.
The Edo Period (1603 to 1867) witnessed an expansion in the use of pleasure boats catering to samurai, their families, and aristocrats. It was during this era that the iconic design of roofed boats adorned with red lanterns gained popularity.
In the present day, yakatabune boats (屋形船) are a source of enjoyment for both locals and international tourists. Springtime offers enchanting cruises along rivers adorned with cherry blossoms, while summer invites you to cruise into the Port of Yokohama for exclusive, panoramic views of vibrant fireworks and the Yokohama skyline.
While these boat cruises departing from the Minatomirai waterfront district in Yokohama are not overly expensive, they may not be the first choice for budget-conscious travelers. A two-hour lunch cruise is priced at 6,500 yen, and a three-hour dinner cruise costs 14,500 yen.

Blue City Skyline
This shot of the Minatomirai waterfront district features Yokohama’s most well-known high-rise towers and hotel: Landmark Tower (left), Queen’s Tower A and B (center), The Yokohama Bay Hotel Tokyu (center-left), and the InterContinental Yokohama Grand hotel (right), which “evokes the image of a white sail against the blue sea.”
When overseas cruise ships visiting Japan arrive in the Port of Yokohama, this is the skyline passengers will see first as they disembark from the ship.

A long-exposure of the Yokohama Minatomirai waterfront skyline as seen from the Zo-no-Hana Breakwater next to Osanbashi Pier. This scene shows icons of Yokohama, including the Yokohama Cosmoworld Ferris wheel, the InterContinental Yokohama Grand hotel, which resembles the shape of a yacht under sail, and the Queen’s Square towers with rooflines resembling rolling waves.
