Do you think kaijis dick is as pointy a his nose?
Tumblr media
Hm...I would say no, but FKMT hasn't ever drawn a cock on his characters as far as I know. I mean you see Kaiji naked a few times and his ass is not only round but dummy thicc, so I imagine he'd have a regular (if not exemplary) dick and balls. And not all FKMT characters have pointy noses, since Hyoudou's got that potato nose. There's some roundness. And considering he has canonical children, he's got to have something that can enter a vagina without it being like a protractor down there right?
God now I'm thinking about Hyoudou's cock and I want to die, ok that image isn't leaving my brain until I go to therapy again

Mr. Tonegawa Middle Management Blues hits too close to home when you’ve worked for or are working for corporate.
But that made this anime all the more hilarious because it feel so human. It made me want to cry at moments because you get blindsided by the unexpected kindness in a capitalist-dominant environment.

did you or vinelle watch the original Squid Game or the reality show Squid Game? opinions?
I watched Squid Game, the show and not the... reality show, to my knowledge @therealvinelle hasn't.
In retrospect, Squid Game is actually Kaiji and Mr. Tonegawa's Middle Management Blues (which I had not seen at the time of watching Squid Game) and... they're different enough that I don't feel I necessarily have to compare them and they focus on different things (Kaiji on the inescapable allure of gambling and Squid Game more on the evils of society). Though the walking on glass planks bit had my eyebrows raised as "wow, that's the human derby from Kaiji, down to the letter, alright"
But anyways, I thought (season 1 at least, I'm not holding my breath for season 2) was a decent show that had a good main character and a decent if not as good supporting cast (I didn't find them quite as compelling). It had a great tense soundtrack, delightfully surreal visuals, and I have no major complaints.
I do feel a season 2 is unnecessary, as I felt the story was satisfactorily concluded, and I don't think dismantling the Squid Games will make as good of a point/story as the games itself did in season 1.
As for there being a reality show now...
Well...
They kind of missed the point of the show but I'm not shocked.

Did anyone watch Middle Managment Blues Tonegawa? I remember watching all of it, but it felt like a fever dream. It was a damn funny fever dream though. I wish they'd adapt Ichijou's manga.

WELCOME...! Today I will introduce you to the Kaiji spinoff Jokyou Seikatsuroku Ichijou, in Morning magazine.
Jokyou Seikatsuroku Ichijou: "chapter 0" review
This is rare. It's only in this Morning issue, not reprinted in a tankobon. I purchased the physical edition. So I hope you don't mind if I post these. Please forgive me. (For chapter reviews of true chapters, I won't post any actual chapter pages, only panels and description.) Pictures and edited DeepL translations are below this cut.
This is the cover. When this manga was announced online, it was a mosaic-blurred version of this illustration. His clothes are revealed- he is relaxing at home, enjoying a mikan under the kotatsu. A Japanese custom for the New Year.
Tumblr media
Contents page. A pose similar to his appearance in the Kaiji season 2 OP.
Tumblr media
A front cover 4 colour page introduction. How luxurious! Even Tonegawa is jealous, he only had a 1-page intro. This page is a meta comic (it is a page from the Entertainment chapter of Tonegawa spinoff, edited with different dialogue).
Tumblr media
ICHI: "I'm here to say hello! I'll be playing the main role in 'Jokyo Seikatsuroku Ichijou'. My name is Ichijou Seiya....!" TONE: "Hmm...." ICHI: "As I'm sure you know, Tonegawa-sensei... To be clear... This work is a spin-off...! I wish to follow the example of Tonegawa-sensei, who worked on 'Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa'. I hope to take a leap forward with this work. But... It will be serialised in 'Morning'. As we don't want to confuse the new readers... It is necessary to introduce myself, tenfold, twentyfold....!! I am a newcomer, but I have 4 colour pages, and a front cover. It's not a problem, is it? Hehehe... TONE: (Guh... When my spin-off was new, I only got 1 page... In Monthly Young Magazine...)
Now to the next page.
The official Ichijou introduction is hilarious tbh. Summarised:
POINT 1: Maintainer and developer of The Bog POINT 2: HE'S HOT POINT 3: HE'S MOÉ
Point 1 page and profile:
Tumblr media
A page about his most addictive gambling machine.
The serialization of "Jokyo Seikatsuroku Ichijou" has started! Some of you may ask, "Who is this Ichijou in the first place?" Well, he is a very popular character who fought a ferocious battle with Kaiji in Young Magazine. We will give you an in-depth look at Ichijou Seiya!
DATA Workplace: Illegal casino directly maintaned by consumer finance company Teiai Group Position: Casino manager Routine: Adjusting the nails of "The Bog" Disliked People: Kaiji, Chairman Hyoudou, local classmates Favourite Phrases: "Tenfold, twentyfold", "Foolish dream", "This is reality"
The other paragraphs mainly describe the Bog itself and its specs.
The next page is a precious treasure...
Tumblr media
Ichijou Point 2: Almost the only handsome guy in the "Kaiji" series!! It's a far cry from Kaiji's beer-guzzling and the Chairman's lapping of fine wine from a basin! Ichijou's unparalleled elegance! In the world of "Kaiji", where basically only old men with bad faces appear, Ichijou is an exceptionally handsome character. The fact that the man Kaiji was fighting before was the middle-aged, thread-eyed, dumpling-nosed, round-cropped Foreman Ootsuki, should give you an idea of the uniqueness of the situation. From tending to his nails and eyebrows in the manager's office to enjoying a glass of wine or coffee with his blacksuits, his every move is elegant. However, handsome guys are always frowned upon, and not only by his nemesis Kaiji, but even by his very own boss Chairman Hyoudou, who calls him 'snooty'." “I always…” “Hated his face…!” “Just looking at him makes me sick……….!” Handsome looks were a liability for Ichijou, unknowingly raising Chairman Hyoudou's ire. How unlucky!
Ichijou Point 3: Brilliant, cunning, worrying, and... pitiable! He is such a snooty handsome man, but as a result of his disadvantaged circumstances and the hard days he endured at Teiai, he has developed a distorted personality that makes him seem not popular at all- this is Ichijou's surprisingly endearing charm. The great man at Teiai praises Kaiji, so the primary school boy-like Ichijou gets involved with him in a fierce rivalry, and the pachinko balls' whereabouts gives him joy and sorrow with unusual amplitude... We invite you to witness Ichijou who is full of varied charms, in "Tobaku Hakairoku Kaiji".
Yes, I like these phrases: 「多彩な魅力たっぷりの一条」 「一条の何とも愛おしい魅力だ。」 「小学生男子な一条」 is sort of weird though, like shotacon bait ww.
不憫 (I translated as 'pitiable') has an affectionate connotation, you can read about this word.
Ichijou's official introduction spends 1 whole page talking about how hot and cute he is. It's no surprise- Ichijou was officially described as the 2nd Most Moé Fukumoto Character in Kaiji season 2's original broadcast. Next is a page of his memorable quotes.
Tumblr media
Introducing a number of quotes filled with the charm of Ichijou, the villain who wavers your heart...!
Indeed. He wavers your heart, because many viewers and readers of the Bog arc say that they didn't know who they should cheer for. Two young men full of dreams. (Indeed- one of the anime staff said in a staff comment that Ichijou is like the second protagonist of his arc while also being the villain- I'll try to find it and post it).
The TOKORO GA DOKKOI scene is described:
Tumblr media
(* From "Tobaku Haikairoku Kaiji" volume 12, page 216) When he survives Kaiji's fierce onslaught at the last minute, this phrase pops out unexpectedly. The fact that he is so tense that his wording goes all funny, and that he is making the customers around him feel uncomfortable with his true feelings, which is unbecoming of a casino manager, is adorable.
That's right, 愛おしい. Adorable, precious, endearing etc. Tokoro ga dokkoi = tokoro ga itoshii. I thought I was just toxoplasmosis-infected for finding this scene very cute, but it turns out I'm perfectly normal.
''テンパリ'', odd turn of phrase, and [dangerously close to the circle-name of a certain artist known for his Ichijou doujins] it is a slang term for tempermental, and derived from mahjong 'tenpai'.
You can tell that this introduction was written by a based Ichijou enjoyer because I agree with everything stated. The writer understands the appeal perfectly and articulates it perfectly. Did Hagiten write it?
Tumblr media
If you now understand Ichijou's charm... Turn the page and GO!
To next chapter....

👛 your favorite rare pair? & 🗝️ favorite antagonist?
👛 Favorite Rare Pair:
Tricky one. Most of my favorite pairs are couples in canon, OCs in my head, or interact a lot.
I'm going with Rika and Usshi, the side-character bandmates from How Do We Relationship? (付き合ってあげてもいいかな) They're not on screen that much, and I couldn't find them smooching on ao3, so I'm counting them as a rare pair.
Rika is a hot mess of a vocalist who changes partners on a week-to-week or even day-to-day basis, Usshi is the homelier and much-more-together music nerd who plays guitar in their band.
Usshi's room has a top bunk where Rika sleeps sometimes when she's really stoned. Usshi having a particularly strong reaction seeing Rika flirt with a random guy after a concert triggers what is, depending heavily on one's interpretation of the text, a non-binary awakening, an ace awakening, or just some deep, profound introspection. (I personally didn't get strong enby vibes from the scene I've seen talked about and the conversation that happened after, but I can sort of see it after reading a couple of breakdowns by others. My take having read primarily the Japanese version is that there is room to read Usshi a number of different ways.)
Fundamentally, they both get along really well despite being polar opposites. But they can never be together in that way unless something changes.* And I find that really compelling and human and I got really fixated on them for a while. (Or if they figure out a queerplatonic relationship that works for both of them, idk?)
(Side-note, I opened up my volume 1 to check a couple of things and the bookmark was on page 157, the scene where Usshi pitches Rika on the band during their first club party.)
🗝️ Favorite Antagonist:
The one that came to mind immediately is Tonegawa Yukio from Kaiji. (keeping it vague because I feel like doing so)
He's a middle manager of a blatantly evil company (they're predatory loan sharks and the games they conduct over the series injure and kill the participants). Te does his job well, too; his actions also responsible for directly harming multiple named characters.
The reason why he's interesting to me is that the series gives him a lot of room to talk and rationalize the awful behavior, putting layers on the onion to make him less and less sympathetic in situations where he has no real reason to lie. But they're also speeches that have an emotional grain of truth to them, and let you see why they could be sincerely felt beliefs.
youtube
(The delivery of these monologues is helped by some great gravel-crunching voice acting by Hakuryuu in the Japanese and David Harbold in the English audio tracks.)
At the same time, you see a lot of his speech is posturing, and he's working for a truly sadistic boss, a gambling junkie who delights in human misery. This culminates in the ending of the E-Card arc, where he's forced to pay for his crimes not by the protagonist, but by his boss. You see him endure some pretty heinous torture that ends in third-degree burns to the face in a great scene that portrays him as both a villain and a victim of the system he's worked his way into.
I wish more shows spent real time the blending and overlap of villain and victim roles, because I think it's a topic that allows for a lot of character depth.

Middle manager Tonegawa is an eldest daughter anime to me

I think fkmt was fucking with us when he decided to make his cartoonish villains meant to represent capitalistic greed collaborate with adobe but it happened.
In early to mid 2017, Adobe Creative Cloud did a collaboration with Tonegawa that included a comic, an "overwhelming" 20% discount until June 2nd 2017, and a bonus animated zawa screensaver one could get by answering a questionnaire.
It has a storyline to it, with Teiai facing troubles with long working hours using their own in-house tools, finding it more efficient to use the creative cloud.
Tumblr media
"We're going to be switching to... Creative Cloud....!" "eh....?" "These guys.... Have no idea what I'm talking about......!!"
And so he elaborates on the benefits of using creative cloud for explicitly evil deeds.
They bring up 10 particular points, which will be roughly translated under the read more:
Tumblr media
Reason 1. "Mobile is quite the force to be reckoned with......!" "Get ready for mobile production! It's now possible to take a photo with a smartphone and finish it with Illustrator."
Tumblr media
Reason 2. "I can feel the joy in my heart.... The pleasure of being able to use the "Morisawa" font collection...!" "You can also use font services! Fonts and materials that can be used for commercial purposes (*restrictions may apply, depending on the plan)"
Tumblr media
Reason 3. "Mac? Windows? We don't need to choose.......!" "Whether you have Mac or Windows, you can install on two different PCs! An individual license can install on two PCs (*they cannot be run simultaneously)"
Tumblr media
Reason 4. "If you use CC...... You can also use CS6....." "All versions of CS6 and later can be used! All versions of CS6 and later are available for usage. You can still use the package product that you're waiting for."
Tumblr media
Reason 5. "Replacing members.... Can be done freely!" "Corporate licensing is a breeze! In the group version, the license ownership belongs to the company rather than the individual, so members can be replaced freely"
Tumblr media
Reason 6. "You can update on your own time....!" "Updates can happen whenever you like. There's no forced updates, they happen according to you."
Tumblr media
Reason 7. "No additional charges....!" "Support and updates come at no additional cost. There is no additional cost for upgrading versions. The same goes for technical support through phone calls or chat...!"
Tumblr media
Reason 8. "The library of materials...Can't be ignored...!" "Hassle-free management and sharing of materials: Images, color themes, text styles, etc. Are automatically synced among apps and members for easy sharing."
Tumblr media
Reason 9. "CC Projects..... Can be submitted..... From anywhere...!" "Can be printed out to any printing company nationwide! Works can be sent from InDesign CC and Illustrator CC to printing shops."
Tumblr media
Reason 10. "Only buying Illustrator....! That's a possibility....!" "A variety of plans including standalone plans are available! Standalone plans for illustrator are available as well"
On a printed ad for this collaboration, Tonegawa brought up the first 5 points listed above. However instead of the original 4th point, it was advertising a 41% discount up until June 2nd of that year. I don't recall a 41% discount being mentioned anywhere else, I'm not sure if they changed their mind, the discount changes depending on the plan selected, or if it was part of the reward for the questionnaire like the screensaver.
The event seems to have been received very neutrally or with mild excitement and confusion when it was acknowledged at all, with one blog user casually commenting on the matter of the Morisawa font group being among the top 10 reasons to use Creative Cloud, believing it to be too mediocre to be worth advertising. Another asked if there even were fans of FKMT's works who would benefit from this or what kind of decisions led to this collaboration. I believe the disconnect comes from the way this collab targets corporations rather than individual manga readers. From the perspective of people who don't care or wouldn't benefit from Adobe, it's just like... Yeah this is a thing that happened I guess. My favorite quote from someone on twitter was one along the lines of “Just as Teiai extorts money from debtors, you can pay the Adobe tax! What a well done collaboration”

Random question but do you have a fav anime/manga art style? Or a least fav?
Keep in mind idk art terms (I only recently got into sketching and watercolor and idk WHAT the fuck I'm doing lol)
So I really love the shading in older stuff like Cowboy Bebop and that era of anime. I can't describe it but the muted color palette and way backgrounds were done back then especially make my eyes happy.
Also speaking of more muted subtle color palettes, I like Naoki Urasawa's art style and I love the anime adaptation of Monster. I also like Pluto but the fire effects look so fucking stupid, I get the effects are meant to clash with the 2D style but I hate it so much, it looks like someone making a YTP and using Adobe Premiere for the first time and it almost ruined the anime for me. All the tension in a scene crumbles when I see those stupid CG effects. But Monster is so pretty to me. I also appreciate Urasawa giving his women actual noses and like. Personalities. Eva Heinemann is one of my favorite female characters in anything, and it helps that she's a bitchy trainwreck who flips the gender dynamics of mysteries by giving HER *SPOILERS* a murdered significant other that fuels HER story as opposed to a women fueling a male character's manpain.
Tumblr media
I like the weird wonky art style of Mob Psycho 100 and Chainsaw man, where the wonkiness kind of works to its advantage and can convey expressions just by being drawn Like That. It isn't bad but there's something about the weird expressions in CSM especially that kill me when something funny is happening.
Mob Psycho's anime and the first season of OPM are beautifully animated and MP100 perfectly adapts the original manga style. It keeps the spirit of the original panels but also adds so much stylization and all of the action sequences are gorgeous.
I also like the weird/wonky style of FKMT'S comics like Kaiji and Middle Manager Tonegawa, and the anime adaptations are also examples of great adaptation imo.
Sometimes I'm annoyed by the dehydrated look that JJBA has in the later parts, especially around the arms, but Araki's colored panels are so gorgeous to me. My favorite parts are 4 and 6 and I'm not in love with the manga style he had for faces in Part 4, but the anime looks perfect to me. Look at this boy. His face is perfect.
Tumblr media
And yes this includes the piss-yellow sky because I like the color palette of the DiU anime a LOT. Since a lot of animators work on the Jojo anime, characters can look really different between episodes and even between scenes, but I love the way Jolyne looks in almost all of Part 6 when she has a fuller face. And the color palette of Stone Ocean's anime took a bit for me to get used to since the colored manga has a vastly different shade of green for her, but I really like Yellow-green Jolyne and how she stands out while complementing FF and Hermes's green shades.
Tumblr media
You can tell by this list so far that I usually like wacky bullshit and artists that just do whatever they want. As far as pure lovemaking for the eyes, I adore shit like Mononoke where texture is king and every shot is pure ecstasy.
Tumblr media
I also love Berserk's art style and I'm lowkey amazed Miura's assistants are able to replicate it so well considering his insane attention to detail. Even when displaying grotesque and sometimes misogynistic horrors, every spread of this series is a masterpiece. I also can't believe that he was able to give a skullfaced character so much emotion and expression (subtle, but still there) despite the fact that because he is a fucking skeleton, Skull-King's face can't actually change. This page makes me choke up just looking at it. I choked up while searching for it on Google for fucks sake
Tumblr media
Speaking of skeleton characters I love, I like the flatter look of Skull-Faced Bookseller Honda-san, one of my favorite manga of all time! The way the mangaka personifies all his employees is just so cute looking to me, and I love the color palette of the covers and the anime.
Tumblr media
And while I give Ohba's writing a metric ton of shit, Obata's art is so pretty. When I think of the trinity of "Mangaka who draw peak fashion", it's Araki, Obata, and Tite Kubo. If I was not a suburban white woman, I would say that they give their characters tons of drip.
