About Linux, I don't think the problem with mass adoption is because LInux distros are all difficult to use and require technical programming knowledge. Maybe that was a problem like in the 90s and to some extent in the 00s, but not now. Some distros still use predominately command line interfaces like Arch, but more have perfectly user-friendly GUIs. Mint is a good example. And GUI are important for the non-programmer user. A good GUI is how both Apple and Microsoft established their OS dominance back in the day, despite the other drawbacks of their operating systems. In my experience the Windows GUI has declined massively since at least XP, but Windows gets by on the inertia of being a monopoly at this point.
It's actually that inertia that keeps Linux from becoming popular. It's because Windows and Apple have the money and thus power to bundle their OS with computer hardware as the default. Paying for Windows has become an invisible part of the price of buying a laptop at this point. And that puts Linux at an disadvantage, because the user have to go out of their way to install it. People are creatures of habit, and most people have little interest in computers beyond their use as a practical tool. They will go with the default option.
So I don't see a way for Linux to have mass adoption without making it a default on the laptops people buy. And that's hard unless you have the money/power of a near-monopoly like Microsoft. And part of acquiring that power means you are unlikely to act in the best interests of your customers.
Google have their own operating systems that are based on the Linux kernel, and those are seeing wide adoption. Android is one half of the Phone OS duopoly and Chrome OS has put a small dent in the Apple/Microsoft duopoly on PCs. And that success is because those systems are the default on the hardware they come on. But both of those systems are corporate controlled shit, contrary to the original principles of free software that Linux is built on.
There are some laptops that come with better Linux distros like Ubuntu installed by default, but they tend to be fairly expensive specialist tools. A Dell XPS 13 for example is one of the cheaper options I could find, and comes with either Windows or Ubuntu installed, and the Ubuntu option is cheaper than the Windows version, but the price is still over 1000 dollars. That's kinda where the price range start with Linux laptops. Of course, the cheaper option for getting a premade laptop without paying for windows remains buying a used computer with a wiped harddrive and installing Linux from an usb drive yourself, but still not a default.
I think for mass adoption, you need to convince computer hardware companies to sell cheap low-spec laptops with the option of having a linux distro already installed. They would actually have an advantage price-wise due to not paying MIcrosoft. But that's a hard job, since Microsoft has such a well-established hold on those.
Still I think Linux users should spread the word. Try to grow, even if we are destined to remain a small part of all PC users at this point. We need and should educate people. People should have computer knowledge, because the modern world runs on computers. And if you acquire computer knowledge, you should learn that Windows isn't really the best option for your computer.

It's the year 2023 and I still cannot easily stream my PC to whatever device.
I can't continue watching YT videos on my phone.
I can't directly send pictures and videos to my PC from my phone or vice versa.
Why.
God. Why.
It's not profitable to just let people stream their desktop or YT video to the "smart" tv. Oh god no. It's more profitable to lock it behind shitty Chromium, the thing google's trying to force all websites to only allow just to push everyone else out of the market. Except 7/8 use chromium and you should be using Firefox by now.
Can't do cool shit because it's not profitable.
You gotta get their Specific Software mostly for your phone so more data can be stolen, install software on your PC, all of this is 3rd party Company Operated as shit mind you, and then when you try to sign in 3 times with the wrong password, we'll ban you from logging in for an indefinite amount of time.

They Have A Vision
If there is any company whose IPO I wish I had bought into, it is Apple’s. Of course, hindsight is far better than my 64-year-old blue eyes. When the stock debuted on 12th December 1980 (Yeah! Forty-three years ago!), it was $22 a share. Today, if I had put only $1000 on the line, it would be worth $1.26 million.
Dang. Retirement plans foiled.
Apple is an anomaly in many ways. It has always been an innovator, even if it wasn’t necessarily first to market. It’s just that when it did come to market, it did so better than anyone else nearby. Furthermore, it has seldom worried about being the market share leader. They’re good with being Number Two in many cases, if only because the high price of their products (aka The Apple Tax) helps offset market share losses.
Yesterday at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the tech giant announced its new Vision Pro, which combines virtual and augmented reality. The price? A mere $3499. Holy cow, that’s a lot of Benjamins. But you can probably bet your last $100 that Apple’s new product is going to knock it out of the park.

Apple has always come in with lofty prices on its introductions. The first iPhone (2007) hit the market at $599, which was basically unheard of then. The iPad (2010) was $499, and then the Apple Watch (2015) was $349 and up. I bought into iPhone 2 and iPad 1, but skipped the watch, if only because my students had already ridiculed me back in 2010 for wearing an old-school watch while carrying an iPhone around. They said it was redundant, and made me look old.


Now I look old for not having an Apple Watch. Go figure.
Anyway, with such a high price, Apple is assuming some hefty risks. Sure, we’ve had inflation the last two years, but nothing like what could have caused an introductory price to balloon this much. Basically, the Vision Pro “looks like a pair of ski goggles and lets people overlay virtual images on live videos of the real world.” You look through it, not at it.
As per the announcement info, the device allows for apps to pop up in front of our eyes. And, our eyes will be visible to those on the outside, so we’re not exactly in another world away from others. Disney has also come on board to create content for the new device. Knowing Apple, there won’t be any shortage of content, lest early adopters be left wondering what to do with their expensive plaything.
While there have been others who have tried and failed in this space, let us be reminded that Apple typically comes along to show us how to use all the cool things. I learned this with the iPhone, whose introduction I belittled since I already owned a phone, camera, and iPod. Why would I possibly need an all-in-one? Because Apple had plans for me, you, and millions of other people.
I suspect that Apple will do with the Vision Pro what it did to Blackberry with phones, and Amazon Kindle with tablets. It will redefine the space and add far more complexity and features than earlier entrants could ever conceive. Apple has been down this road multiple times, and knows how to compete.
Companies like Google and Microsoft, known more for their software and operating systems than anything else, have not fared as well in hardware. Just ask Google about Google Glass.
I may not exactly know just yet how I will incorporate Vision Pro into my daily routine, but I bet it’s going to be amazing. I am fully invested in the Apple ecosystem (aside from the watch), and know that everything they make plays well with everything else. But it is still a big gulp moment, because this is nearly as much as the last camera body I bought, something I get lots of usage from on a regular basis. Wearing ski goggles will take some adjustments for me.
On the other hand, Apple always seems to know something I don’t. It’ll all become clear in a little while.

Walgreens Replaced Some Fridge Doors With Screens. And Some Shoppers Absolutely Hate It.
Walgreens and other retailers have swapped out the clear fridge and freezer doors at thousands of stores, instead adding opaque doors with iPad-like screens showing what's inside. Some customers really, really aren't into it.
The screens, which were developed by the startup Cooler Screens, use a system of motion sensors and cameras to display what's inside the doors – as well as product information, prices, deals and, most appealing to brands, paid advertisements. The tech provides stores with an additional revenue stream and a way to modernize the shopping experience. But for customers who just want to peek into the freezer and grab their ice cream, Walgreens risks angering them by solving a problem that shoppers didn't know existed.
The company wants to engage more people with advertising, but the reaction, so far, is annoyance and confusion.
"Why would Walgreens do this?" one befuddled shopper who encountered the screens posted on TikTok. "Who on God's green earth thought this was a good idea?" "The digital cooler screens at Walgreens made me watch an ad before it allowed me to know which door held the frozen pizzas," said someone on Twitter. Another echoed: "@Walgreens NOBODY needs TV screen replacing doors in your cooler aisles.... Stop."
Retailers are eager to add new experiences to their physical stores. But many consumers aren’t eager to change their habits – and they certainly aren't used to watching freezer-display ads. "People really appreciate their routines. They're not always seeking excitement," said Julio Sevilla, an associate professor of marketing at the University of Georgia who studies consumer behavior. Digital screens, he said, can add uncertainty and physical barriers to a simple and literally transparent process: reaching into a glass fridge.
Sevilla doesn't believe consumers are looking for novelty when they visit a grocery store: "We all love to get into a supermarket and know exactly what we're getting. I know also exactly where things are. For this type of utilitarian-related setting, people like their certainty and simplicity."
Big-name stores
Still, Walgreens and Cooler Screens are pushing forward. Walgreens began testing the screens in 2018 and has since expanded the pilot to a couple thousand locations nationwide.
Several other major retailers are launching their own tests with Cooler Screens, including Kroger, CVS, GetGo convenience stores and Chevron gas stations. "I hope that we will one day be able to expand across all parts of the store," said Cooler Screens co-founder and CEO Arsen Avakian in an interview with CNN Business. Currently the startup has about 10,000 screens in stores, which are viewed by approximately 90 million consumers monthly, according to the company. Avakian said the company aims to bring its digital displays to a broad range of retailers including those in beauty, consumer electronics and home improvement.
A Walgreens spokesperson said in an email that Walgreens is "committed to exploring digital innovation in [an] effort to deliver new and different experiences for our customers." The spokesperson said the screens add value because they give customers relevant product information to help them decide what to buy, and that Walgreens is evaluating the pilot to decide whether to expand further.
'Moment of truth'
Though not all of Walgreens' customers are fans, Cooler Screens' concept has attracted prominent brands like Coke, Pepsi, Nestle, Kraft Heinz and Monster. It's raised more than $100 million from backers including Microsoft and Verizon.
Cooler Screens CEO Avakian said he developed the concept after watching in-store customers whip out their phones to find product information and reviews. Traditionally, in-store advertising has been limited to options like signs, promotions and prominent placement on shelves. But Cooler Screens' targeted digital ads deliver at the "moment of truth," Avakian said, right as consumers decide which product to pull out of the fridge.
Brands can place ads spread over multiple freezers, ones that display products' nutritional labels, or ads triggered by weather or time of day. An ice cream company might want to run ads when it's hot outside, while a coffee brand could hit the morning rush.
The setup aims to help stores add high-margin advertising revenue to offset their core low-margin retail business. Companies pay Cooler Screens to run screen ads and retailers get a cut. "There's a big movement in retail right now to create what's called a 'retail media network,' which taps into all the ways brands can interact with that retailer digitally," said Chris Walton, a former vice president at Target who runs the retail blog Omni Talk.
'This wasn't a problem'
Cooler Screens says 90% of consumers it has surveyed prefer its digital screens to traditional fridges, and that the displays provide sales lifts for stores. (Walgreens did not comment on that.)
But beyond the confused social media posts, the tech has also attracted misinformation and conspiracy theories. Politifact last month debunked a viral Facebook video that claimed "Walgreens refrigerators are scanning shoppers' hands and foreheads for 'the mark of the beast.' " Avakian insists the tech is "identity-blind" and protects consumers' privacy. The freezers have front-facing sensors used to anonymously track shoppers interacting with the platform, while internally facing cameras track product inventory.
Some customers have expressed frustration with the experience. People aren't sure whether to tap the screens or talk to them. The items on display don't always match up with what's inside because products are out of stock. Henry Brewer, who recently encountered one of the digital screens at a Walgreens in Chicago, said the technology felt "very in-your-face" and "intrusive." "We see advertisements literally everywhere and now I have to go see it on the cooler?" he said. "It doesn't just seem necessary, and I think it's a turnoff to the consumer when this wasn't a problem."
To Avakian, it's simply an expected growing pain. Cooler Screens plans to educate customers about the digital displays and launch features like voice recognition, so shoppers can ask about prices or item locations. "This is the future of retail and shopping," Avakian said.

DOJ Sues Apple In 'Landmark iPhone Monopoly' Case

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of monopolizing the smartphone market. 
Attorneys general from 15 states and the District of Columbia have joined the civil lawsuit, which charges Apple with limiting its smartphone operating system in a way that raises consumer prices and makes it difficult for developers to successfully release products on other smartphone systems.
“Consumers should not have to pay higher prices because companies violate the antitrust laws,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a news release.
They also allege that Apple prevents developers from creating cross-platform messaging apps in order to force users to purchase iPhones. 
The Department of Justice (DOJ) drew attention to the common grievance expressed by customers that messages sent from non-iPhone devices appear green rather than the typical blue color of iMessage and have fewer features than messages sent between two iMessage users.
Some Android phone owners have also reported that they can not watch videos in full size if it is sent to them in a text message by someone using an iPhone.
At a press conference on Thursday after the lawsuit was made public, Garland acknowledged Apple’s corporate dominance, pointing out that its market capitalization exceeded the GDP of over 100 nations. However, he said that this was more likely the consequence of Apple’s “exclusionary” business practices than its superior products.
He claimed that Apple has outperformed rival companies “by making other products worse, not by making its own products better.”
Apple refuted the claims and charged government overreach in a statement.
It stated that it was not required to adopt designs or guidelines that rival companies might favor, particularly if doing so would negatively impact the experience of iPhone users.
Apple stated, for instance, that it has not created an iMessage version that works with non-iPhone devices since it would not be able to offer a user experience that is comparable and up to the company’s standards.
“At Apple, we innovate every day to make technology people love—designing products that work seamlessly together, protect people’s privacy and security, and create a magical experience for our users,” it said. “This lawsuit threatens who we are and the principles that set Apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets. If successful, it would hinder our ability to create the kind of technology people expect from Apple—wwhere hardware, software, and services intersect. It would also set a dangerous precedent, empowering the government to take a heavy hand in designing people’s technology. We believe this lawsuit is wrong on the facts and the law, and we will vigorously defend against it.” A lengthy antitrust case against Facebook parent Meta and a more recent one against Amazon are both pending before the Federal Trade Commission, while the U.S. Justice Department is already suing Google for allegedly monopolizing digital advertising services. 
Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission attempted to stop Microsoft’s now-closed acquisition of Activision, a developer of video games, in December.
The lawsuit against Apple is the third effort by an attorney general to take on the tech giant with its headquarters in Cupertino, California.
“This clearly escalates the Biden Administration antitrust efforts against big tech giants and adds to the current ongoing antitrust case against Google and other various cases against Meta and Amazon,” Dan Ives, a managing director and senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities, said in an investor note.
The complaint goes on to claim that Apple has a monopoly over a number of other products and services, including web browsers, video chat, news subscriptions, entertainment, automobile services, advertising, and location services.
“For years, Apple responded to competitive threats by imposing a series of ‘Whac-A-Mole’ contractual rules and restrictions that have allowed Apple to extract higher prices from consumers, impose higher fees on developers and creators, and throttle competitive alternatives from rival technologies,” said Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. “Today’s lawsuit seeks to hold Apple accountable and ensure it cannot deploy the same, unlawful playbook in other vital markets.”
