Remembering Bo Goldman 1932-2023

Screenwriter Bo Goldman has died at 90. He won two Oscars for two of the greatest films ever made IMHO: Milos Forman's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Jonathan Demme's Melvin and Howard. OFOTCN was adapted and it was one of Jack Nicholson's great performances. Demme's M&H is a phenomenal piece in Demme’s body of work. The inherent goodness in people despite their flaws is a constant theme in a lot of his work and that’s especially true here.

Goldman was an uncredited writer on Demme's 1984 film Swing Shift as well. That movie gets a bad wrap mainly because Demme didn't have final cut, star/producer Goldie Hawn did. I have seen the released version and I've also seen the director's cut version and there was some great scenes in there, just not as good as one would hope from Demme and Goldman.

Goldman is the father-in-law of another talented director Todd Fields as well.

According to the files, Larry Parker’s first name is Laurence, the man we meet near Arcade machines is Morris Aubrey, and the fisherman is Coyote Nelson… but his description in the unreleased in-game encyclopedia also implies he died, so that might be inaccurate.

This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. During World Wars I and II, hundreds of Native American servicemen from more than twenty tribes used their Indigenous languages to send secret, coded messages enemies could never break. Known as code talkers, these men helped U.S. forces achieve military victory in some of the greatest battles of the twentieth century.

Pfc. Preston Toledo and Pfc. Frank Toledo, Navajo cousins in a Marine artillery regiment in the South Pacific, relay orders over a field radio in their native tongue.

They were present at many important battles, including at Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion in France, and at Iwo Jima in the Pacific. In fact, 5th Marine Division signal officer Major Howard Connor stated, “Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima.”

The men were assigned to the 168th Infantry, 34th Red Bull Division and were sent to North Africa, where they participated in the attacks on Italy under heavy shelling. Three of the men were captured and confined to Italian and German prison camps.
