At this time the Mid Hants Railway was having some problems with their recently laid track between Alton and Medstead and the steam engines were literally being shaken apart running over it. The solution was, whilst the track was repaired, to exchange engines at Medstead and for a Diesel to take the train onto Alton. So in this picture taken around 1986, West Country Pacific Number 34016 Bodmin is waiting at Medstead for the returning service., whence to replace the Class 25 Diesel and continue the service to Alresford. Bodmin was originally built with “Air Smoothed" casing similar to Tangmere (of which I published pictures previously) Oliver Bullied, the designer of these fine locomotives, Incorporated some revolutionary ideas in the construction of the class, unfortunately a bit too far ahead of their time. When the engines became the property of British Railways it was decided to rebuild them to a more conventional design .Bodmin was therefore rebuilt to this form which still made for a very handsome piece of engineering.

Nation-Wide Program of Improvements to Be Undertaken

Government Co-operation Is Responsible For Decision

YORKTON, Sask., Oct. 2. - A program of improvements and extensions to be undertaken immediately and involving operations from coast to coast, was announced here Wednesday night by E. W. Beatty, chairman and president of the Canadian Pacific railway.
TO PAY BRANCHES
The program provides for the construction of several branch lines, track laying on lines already graded, rock and gravel ballasting, rail replacements, station construction, grade revision and authorization of new surveys.
While an estimate of the actual financial outlay to carry out the program was not disclosed, it is understood that millions of dollars are involved, and that employment will be provided for surplus labor in many sections of the country.
Mr. Beatty made public the company’s program following a trip through western Canada, along with a group of his fellow directors. During this trip close study was given to business and agricultural conditions in the four western provinces, Mr. Beatty said.
WAS FOR FUTURE
‘After conference with the federal government,’ he said, ‘an arrangement has been entered into whereby, in consideration of the assumption by the government of interest charges for a specified period on the capital expenditure involved, the company will immediately embark on certain work, which had been approved for the future, but which in ordinary course would not have been approached until 1931 or 1932.
‘In framing the program,’ Mr. Beatty continued, ‘we have had particularly in mind the desirability of providing some relief to the agricultural industry by furnishing work for farmers and their animals, and by carrying transportation facilities to those districts where the length of haul of the railway imposes an undue burden on the producers time and resources. Other works on the list are designed to absorb as much as possible of the surplus labor in the towns and cities.’
The itemized program makes provision for the following projects:
Track will be laid on the branch line now graded for Crossfield, westerly a distance of 28 miles, and on the Lacombe and Northwestern Railway from Torsby to a point of junction with the Calgary and Edmonton, 22 miles.
Construction will be undertaken on the section of the Nipawan-Prince Albert line from the end of the present grading to Hernibourg, a distance of approximately 20 miles: from Medstead to a point on the Debden-Meadow line, a distance of 35 miles; from Gunworth to Rosetown, a distance of 20 miles; from Hamlin easterly for a distance of 25 miles; and on the Kettly Valley Railway a link will be built connecting the tracks at the north end and south end of Dog Lake.
Rock ballasting will be started on an extensive scale on the Lachute subdivision, on the Galt sub-division, and on the Algo district, all in Eastern Canada. Gravel ballasting will be done on the New Brunswick district.
One hundred miles of track on Ontario will be re-laid with heavier rail sections, and 150 miles of the heaviest rail section so far used in Canada, the announcement says, will be laid in British Columbia. The manufacture of these rails, Mr. Beatty said, will provide much employment in Canadian steel plants, in addition to the labor involved in the actual track work.
Construction operations will be started at once to provide more adequate station accommodation in Regina, Sask. Plans of the station building and track layout are now practically complete, Mr. Beatty intimated.
Contracts for the grading of the branch lines will be awarded within a few days. Surveys are now being made, Mr. Beatty said, which will probably justify entering on some grade revision work along the Thompson River in British Columbia. Provision, he said, had been made for the necessary outlay.
