part of my second Storytelling & Environments II project

Idea was to take a preexisting property and depict it in both a historic context and a reimaged genre. I choose Dracula with my genre change being sci fi.

Even though it’s an environment class, I had a great conversation with my prof after we did an inventory assignment, as I found the assignment to be really engaging and enjoyed drawing objects more than I thought I would.

So for the second part of the project I did an inventory with the basic idea of Dr. Hellsing being the playable character in a video game version of Dracula. With the inventory being his medical bag with various items relating to the book in various ways. Shown here is a blood transfusion kit, cross/rosary and communion wafers.

UI is obviously nothing as I didn’t have time to really put anything worthwhile together and am not great at that more general design stuff. Focus was on the items themselves but I was heavily inspired by the inventory system of Silent Hill 2.

The Project Brief: An in-depth study of a complex communication problem relating to social, cultural, research or industry-specific topics. This project combines design, illustration and design process management. The topic of this project should be meaningful or of special interest to me. This project would take place over two semesters, the first of which will cover creation, branding and design deliverables, and the second semester will cover website construction and design.

My Topic of Interest: Caregiver burnout is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. My grandma, Sandy, is the primary caregiver of my grandpa, Bill, who lives with dementia, and I’ve personally witnessed the stress and loneliness that being a primary caregiver for a dependant has had on her. With respite care being unavailable on an on-call basis, and the frequent cancellations due to understaffing, I knew there had to be a better way to offer these services.

The Solution: Care Plus is a volunteer-based respite care service that offers on-call or pre-booked care sessions to dependents or differently-abled people. To make our care sessions run smoothly, our volunteers and their care clients are matched based on three different factors:

This service was designed with the mentality that community care shouldn’t come with a price tag. The process of caring for others is much deeper than that. This service is designed to foster a sense of pride in our communities and adopt a more collectivist mentality on the subject of caring for our society's most vulnerable members.

Design Solutions:

Due to the scope of this project, it was necessary to design a large variety of deliverables. To give fair attention to each phase of the project I’ll narrow it down into four categories.

1. Research & Discovery: The first thing I focused on was who my target audience would be, and why they might use this service. Upon researching my target audiences I discovered that the average user would be approximately 49 years of age (as this is typically a time when someone would begin caring for a dependant.) My users are 60% more likely to be women compared to 40% of their male counterparts.

Care Plus’ three main audiences are as follows:

Primary Caregivers seeking care for their dependents.

Differently-abled people seeking care for themselves.

Volunteers seeking unique opportunities to connect with their communities.

I discovered that in Canada more than 8 million people are informer (unpaid) caregivers to one or more dependants, that’s 1 in 4 Canadians. As you can likely see, the chances are pretty high that at some point in everyone’s life they will be responsible for the caring (at least in part) of a dependant. The purpose of this project is to lighten the load and bring back a sense of community, and also, most of all, to allow caregivers the chance to ask for help. Everyone needs it sometimes!

Let me put it into perspective for those who are still on the fence, chances are you’ve been on a plane before, right? If so, during the pre-flight, “In case of emergency oxygen mask speech” you’ve probably heard the phrase “Put on your breathing mask before helping those around you.” This is why we need CARE +. Because if you can’t adequately care for yourself, you can’t adequately care for others, period!

2. Implementation & Creation: The next step in this process was figuring out what type of deliverable materials, and guidelines would be necessary for creating this system.

I began researching similar care companies and their overall look and feel. I decided that I wanted to go for friendly over clinical, and playful over serious while still maintaining a sense of professionalism.

The next thing that came to mind for this phase was training for our volunteer caregivers because without our caregivers we wouldn’t have a successful program. It was important that our volunteers felt confident, safe, and ready to act if a situation went awry. To prepare them, the volunteers would receive: Training sessions (similar to Red Cross first-aid training), attend a meet and greet session with their potential care clients, an emergency preparedness booklet with information about medications, dosage, interests, triggers and emergency telephone contacts, appointment cards, and stylish vests that make them easy to identify for their clients.

To attract potential volunteers and clients, I created a series of advertisements to engage and direct them to our services, at first I used black and white photography but found that the images looked too sombre, I then decided to switch to a blue and yellow duo-tone look to brighten up the photos, make them cohesive across all of my branding, and create a lasting impression for viewers. I added some hand-drawn line-art illustrations to further humanize this people-driven program.

3. Testing & Critiques: During this phase of the project, I presented my findings and designs to my classmates as well as industry guests. They brought up a lot of great points about safety, branding and colour choices.

One of the comments I got was that the colours were too close to the Walmart Colour pallet so I made sure to adjust accordingly to avoid association with a completely different industry.

The second comment I received was about my typography choices. Though they did look professional and trustworthy, they felt that I could play up the friendly personality a bit more.

The third comment I received was how could I keep up the standards of volunteers? To achieve that I decided to create a review system, where volunteers could be rewarded with digital badges for a job well done. I also included a criminal record check request section of my web interface to ensure the safety of both volunteers and clients.

4. Web Development & Finalization: The final phase of this project is an ongoing one, we will be working on creating and designing websites, apps, or web apps to wrap our projects up. This will allow our users to engage with the brand in a more complete way creating a full-fledged brand and ecosystem of volunteers/clients.

Key Takeaways: As graphic designers, we must put our users first, this was a great exercise in doing just that. Because, quite frankly, without volunteers, this system wouldn’t work. It also forced me to ask big questions like “why would someone want to spend their time caring for a stranger?” And “In what ways are we neglecting the care of our community’s most vulnerable members.” Having input from my grandma was invaluable, but next time I would make it my goal to speak with a more diverse group of potential users to gain even more insight into what would work and what wouldn’t work.

Conclusion: The final project was a cohesively branded volunteer-based company that says: "we’re friendly yet professional.” It features attractive branding, merch hand-outs, and advertisements to encourage community engagement and a sense of pride.

Similarly, VR comes with an amazing feature of head tracking, when you wear a VR headset, the picture in front of you shifts along with the angle of your head this is because of 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) plots your head as X, Y and Z axis to measure head movements in all directions. For VR, developers must be learned about 3D modeling, 3D games engines, 360° photography and videos, math, programming languages and software development kits (SDKs).

Such technologies need expert developers and specially trained employees

Technology 2: AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Machine Learning

AI strategy in mobile has been taken up by 47% of established organizations. AI and ML are niche based technologies including developers knowing calculus, statistics, algebra, Spark, data mining, data science, machine learning, cognitive computing, text analytics, natural language processing, R, Hadoop etc. From dating applications to healthcare applications needing predictions are everywhere.

For example, AI is being used to predict the stock market and currencies, incorporating methods of such kinds in your application and giving it innovative twists can change the complete dynamic.

AI chatbots and voice recognition systems are the usual features in applications, impulsing new ideas, for example, alerting the customer in case of potential errors, leading customers to explanatory videos in case of confusion detection and so on can be some new approaches by developers.

Technology 3: IoT (Internet of Things)

IoT is the new technology chasing in mobile application development, it is the interaction between humans and machines. IoT combines sensor data, machine learning technologies and predictive analytics for smart and notable user experiences therefore a developer must be knowledgeable about skills of machine learning and big data management. As per a research by PWC 58% retailers have been employing IoT in active/working projects. IoT is a big hit when it comes to smart homes and that the coming cars would all be linked with mobiles.

While developing an application IoT makes sure of the hardware (usually sensors), software, connectivities and cloud. Incorporating sensors is a good idea for the application, for example, robots with temperature, pressure, smoke sensors can facilitate in a lot of ways. Technology 4: Security

As per Symantec, 10.5% of enterprise devices have encryption disabled by default. Mobile Application Security is a very delicate affair and must be the first concern while developing the application. Mobile app developers must support cybersecurity by making sure that personal information is hidden and encrypted. Stereotypical detections and fingerprints are a usual go for security but the developer must incorporate other even safer security features.

Applications must require credentials before revealing sensitive information and only the obligatory permissions must be enabled. Data encryption, usage of trusted API and high-level authentication are some actions developers must incorporate.

For eg, WhatsApp ensures end-to-end app encryption which means the chat remains

between you and the person you're talking to and that not even WhatsApp can read them.

A new feature can be incorporated in the application that at all times displays the security level of the application while blocking the potential threats. Safety of an application is a very delicate issue hence one must be very sure of the developer.

Technology 5: Wearables

Wearable devices have created a huge difference in our understanding and interaction with smart devices. IDTechEx reported that the wearable technology market crossed USD 50 billion last year.

Wearables are quite popular on the medical side as tests can be done online with medical experts monitoring everything. Human senses of seeing, hearing, feeling and smelling can be tracked and incorporating them in your mobile application can create a high level of competition and start a new trend. Such innovation requires highly specialised and skilled based developers which will also help the application to stand out in the market.

UI Health doctors to study new diagnostic test for preeclampsia in Africa

Researchers from University of Illinois Chicago have received funding to study a novel diagnostic kit for preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is pregnancy-related hypertension that can occur at or after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Left untreated, preeclampsia can disrupt fetal growth and lead to preterm birth and stillbirth. In mothers, it can also cause kidney and liver failure and culminate in seizures, coma and death. Delivery of the baby is the most effective treatment, and blood pressure usually returns to normal once this takes place.

In communities with limited access to health care, the diagnosis of preeclampsia relies primarily on a combination of blood pressure and urine protein tests. However, there are no definitive means for diagnosing preeclampsia, said Dr. Gelila Goba, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the UIC College of Medicine. Goba is co-principal investigator of the study, along with Dr. Irina Buhimschi, also an OBGYN professor at UIC.

Buhimschi is one of the inventors of the Congo Red Dot test, a urine test for preeclampsia. Co-developed by researchers at Yale University, the test has been licensed for commercial development.

The study will take place in Ethiopia and Uganda over the next nine months. If successful, it could lead to clinical use in these countries and serve as a model for adoption across Africa and the developing world. In developing countries, the challenge in diagnosing preeclampsia is greater due to lack of equipment and limited access to prenatal care.

“Our study aims to introduce a new technology simultaneously in Ethiopia and Uganda with a goal of developing clinical protocols and understanding the potential barriers to integration of novel preeclampsia diagnostics,” Goba said.

“We believe every pregnancy should be supported with access to tools that promote healthy moms and babies,” Buhimschi said. “Testing for pre-eclampsia is an important preventive intervention and we aim to help ensure every health care provider in the world has access to testing and understands how best to use it no matter the continent or country where they live.”

The study received $496,472 Canadian dollars from Grand Challenges Canada, a Canadian nonprofit organization funded by the Government of Canada and other partners to support global health, humanitarian and Indigenous innovators in low- and middle-income countries and Canada.

Several academic institutions in Africa will be collaborating with UIC, including Makerere University in Uganda and Jimma University in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians & Gynecologists will coordinate activities in Ethiopia. Gynuity Health Projects, a nonprofit research organization based in New York City with extensive experience in international clinical trials will provide technical assistance.

Buhimschi received prior funding for her work with the Congo Red Dot test for preeclampsia from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Grand Challenges Initiative, as well as the United States Agency for International Development and Saving Lives at Birth. Goba received funding from the IDP Foundation, a Chicago private nonprofit foundation that supports research, graduate medical education, and partnership in Ethiopia and Uganda that serves as the institutional framework for the forthcoming study.
