Marnie Stern — The Comeback Kid (Joyful Noise)
Tumblr media
A decade ago, when we last had a Marnie Stern album to consider, she was a beacon of instrumental prowess in a world of “Women who rock” features that largely confined themselves to singers. She was a shredder then and a shredder now, and dare we hope, the world has shifted so that this is no longer so remarkable? In any case, her latest album, The Comeback Kid, is full of shimmering, ultra fanciful castles of guitar-based sound, but it’s also kind of an experimental pop gem, like Deerhoof after a month of Guitar Hero or like OOIOO any time, really.
Stern has spent the last 10 years in ways both unsurprising (she had two kids now) and mildly unusual (she plays guitar on in Late Night’s 8G band). As a result, she sounds both refreshed from the hiatus and in sharp form from the practice. This is, of course, a contradiction, but makes sense when you think about it. Playing other people’s music five nights a week is very different from making your own songs and touring them.
In any case, she is audibly raring to go, in “Believing is Seeing.” She builds a song right in front of us, asking “What if I add this? And then?” and then adding it, big crashing power chords, antic dances of off kilter picking, handclaps, sugar-rush, girl-group shouts and refrains. “Don’t bow down,” she confides before launching the wholly, gloriously excessive “Working Memory” and then DOESN’T BOW DOWN. Instead she launches a Cecil B. DeMille production of an art punk song, with trebly choirs and neck warping firestorms of electric guitar wizardry. It’s the grand finale of all grand finales, but hold on, the album’s not even half over yet.
You’ve still got the stop-start giddy assault of “Earth Eater,” for instance, showcasing rapid-fire bursts of percussion and, again, guitar, as well as fizzy, popping, girl sung choruses that have something very Japanese about them. It’s here that I’m going to pull the Wendy Eisenberg card just because I can think of no other female artist with comparable chops and experimental pop tendencies, but Stern is pure pleasure where Eisenberg can sometimes seem a puzzle maker. You can turn it all off and enjoy The Comeback Kid—or listen in and enjoy the details. (Like that Van Halen solo right at the end of “Earth Eater.”)
Celebrate the comeback, sure, but it sounds like a big bang beginning.

January 2, 2024.
There are only a couple of days each year that Tumblr takes a date and makes a fraction. Today is one of those days. I just wanted to explain why the date is written the way it is.
I'm sure you've all been experiencing the end-of-year lists. Personally, I love them. It makes for easy music perusing. It also serves as a reminder for a few releases that may have slipped my mind during the normal avalanche of new music.
Mt. St. Mtn. (Sacramento, California) had an amazing release year, but somehow XDS "Bicycle Ripper" didn't get a post. The story of the formation of the band is great - Japanese drummer in Chico answers a want ad for noise maker. XDS has moved around (but are back in Chico, California), and toured a lot over the past couple of years. They've toured with Deerhoof (whom they also remind me of). At times, they have a sound reminiscent of Marnie Stern, Buick or Starlight Mints.

september 2021 music!
it’s september 2022, i dug through the archives to post this before i type up this year’s september playlist. a lot has stayed the same, 2021 set the tone for the next few septembers, it seems.
everything is less intense, more settled in. great month of music for me, a lot of stereolab, autocollants, and homelife. very gentle, not necessarily subtle. i'm fully engulfed in this subgenre of twee - anything that's soft, a little dreamy, blue-tinted and slightly sedative. maybe this is rooted in nostalgia, for a time i only vaguely remember, yet crave without means to an end.
i know it's 7 days into october, but my music hasn't shifted quite yet and i put too much effort into these playlists to leave them without an audience. but first i'll list some of my favorite songs from last month, songs that still haven't been worn out, some that might make it into a favorites playlist. and then i will get into the smaller playlists i made to keep things organized, group genres/moods together, force a little cohesion into the mix. (i obviously did not get around to this. the playlists are made though! and can be found here: i learned a lot of good things this afternoon, still here?, too fast?, watch your step!, brain replaced by something, supreme nothing)
songs!
op hop detonation - stereolab
cobra and phases group play voltage in the milky night... // 1999
there is not a bad stereolab song. they are a group of utter consistency, everything just works, hits where it needs to. this song works well on a loop, like going down a factory line. maybe playing in an orange monochrome suburban bathroom that hasn't been updated since the 70s, maybe taking a moped down a twisting side street.
afterglow - pine*am
pull the rabbit ears // 2005
this song/album brought me to a days long deep dive into discogs and rateyourmusic, mostly while sitting up at the reference desk at the library, copy and pasting links into an email i'd send to myself at the end of the hour. it introduced me to picopop, shibuya-kei, brought me further onto this side of twee pop. this song feels like something, unnamed. the theremin (probably, maybe) is haunting, clear. i'll probably try to find a used CD sometime soon.
nothing at all - the autocollants
why couldn't things just stay the same // 1999
this album has given me so much, i could listen to it everyday, every drive to and from work. this isn't a stationary song, it's very much in motion, i must be going somewhere, moving along somehow. i'm sad about nothing at all.
on a rampant multi-tab google search at the circ desk at the library, i found a website that i will most definitely spend countless hours on in the future, TweeNet. a goddamn dream come true. this makes me want to plan another radio show, bless the columbia airwaves with this eternal tenderness.
est - greenscreen
greenscreen // 2019
can't find anything about this band/musician/group/whatever. kind of reminds me of boothe's gentle absurdity (though they're album is no longer available in my country? i miss eggs are 0's) (2022 update: bought the mp3 on bandcamp, all is well). this song is mesmerizing, a little hypnotizing, a little bit cryptic. definitely mysterious, but i'll keep it that way. i learned a lot of good things this afternoon.
one we kiss - jenny mae
there's a bar around the corner...assholes // 1995
god i love this song. maybe i was a college radio dj in the 90s in some alternate timeline or something. this just sounds like wusc on any given tuesday, tucked into the mundane.
east side glory - marnie stern
the chronicles of marnia // 2013
looking forward to continuing to gradually make my way through marnie stern's discography, though i'm saddened that this was her final album (for now maybe?).

Week 4: An Album a Day 2024
Tumblr media
22. Hung At Heart, The Growlers
in my radio show, i use this one backtrack pretty often. i just now found out its an instrumental from this album. that song is the closer, 'The Fruit Is For Everyone.' this is a rock album which sounds much older than it is. it has a gentle sound sort of feeling like a kind of indie pop rock album at times. some of my highlights included 'Salt on a Slug' and 'Someday.'
23. Apparently, I'm Nothing, State Champs
this is a fun State Champs album. it is a pop punk/emo album and it is relatively short (28m) and has some great stand alone tracks. some of my highlights were 'Small Talk' and 'Stick Around.' this album has some really nice guitar crunch, for those who enjoy that.
24. Pink Tape, Lil Uzi Vert
Pink Tape is a hip-hop album with some metal moments throughout. it has a really unique mash of genres with the metal influence that is so cool coming from someone who does listen to metal and not as much hip-hop. it also has some emotionally heavy tracks that feel great to listen to. some favorites on this one are 'All Alone,' 'x2,' and 'The End.'
25. All Hail West Texas, The Mountain Goats
this album hit so much harder than i thought it was going to. i was mentally prepared for a lighthearted folksy album. it is not lighthearted. it is soul crushing and way too relevant right now. some incredibly emotionally thoughtful lyrics and sound in this album. this was my first full mountain goats album and it hits very well. some of my favorites were 'Fault Lines' and 'The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton.'
26. In Advance of the Broken Arm, Marnie Stern
this is a math rock album with some really interesting music throughout. i have recently learned that one of the main facets of math rock is that musical motifs rarely repeat. so you might hear a cool section and then not hear it again. and thats part of the reason many enjoy it. that is visible in this album. I love the variety of creative and colorful sounding rhythms and patterns. the lyrics are also incredibly meaningful and a great album all together. many of the tracks are amazing stand alones. some highlights include 'Every Single Line Means Something,' Precious Metal,' and 'Letters from Rimbaud.'
27. João Gilberto, João Gilberto
every time i listen to the bossa nova genre it feels like you are mentally transported to an elevator and then zoned out. i do not know better how to explain it. this album feels like something about the pacing and rhythms can just calm down your heart and help you to relax. it has some amazingly smooth vocals and instrumentals throughout. some top tracks include 'Falsa baiana' and 'Valsa.'
28. Lofi Goes Metal, A. Yarmak
this is quite an interesting album as they really are just metal covers of lofi music. it is really fun to hear and i will definetly be using this as personal background or ambient music. the guitar features in some of the tracks are also amazing. some highlights include 'Feblu' and 'Voyage.'

Marnie Stern, The Comeback Kid
New music Wednesday
The enduringly dynamic components constituting the distinctive New Yorker sound remain as powerful and unpredictable as ever. However, the fear and uncertainty that previously propelled her music have somehow dissipated, giving way to a prevailing sense of victory and blissful self-approval. Despite its brevity, just thirty minutes, the album aligns seamlessly with the punk-influenced genre she both creates and executes.

11/12/23.
It's finally here - the aptly named "The Comeback Kid" represents Marnie Stern's first album in 10 years. Since "The Chronicles of Marnia", Stern has been working as part of Seth Meyers' band, the 8G Band.
Stern (New York, New York) really is in a category all her own. There aren't any people (that I'm aware of) whose guitar work sounds like hers. But the overall vibe of the music does recall bands like Deerhoof, Tamar Aphek or Yonatan Gat.
Joyful Noise Recordings was lucky enough to land Stern for this release.

It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
Tumblr media
On today's episode, I talk to musician Marnie Stern. Originally from New York City, Marnie didn't start out trying to pursue music professionally, and her first album In Advance of the Broken Arm came out in 2007 on Kill Rock Stars when she was 30-years-old. It instantly garnered acclaim, and was followed by This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That in 2008, a self-titled album two years later and The Chronicles of Marnia in 2013. The previous year, she made Spin Magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time", and after Seth Meyers took over Late Night, Marnie eventually joined the 8G Band for a number of years. Most recently, Marnie has recorded her first album in ten years; The Comeback Kid is out now on Joyful Noise, and it's fantastic!
