Ah, The Killers. The band that loves to remind you that they hail from Las Vegas. The band that has managed to release albums that are never quite the same but still somehow sound like them. The band with a lead singer that doesn’t seem to age. The band that has never been truly appreciated by the United States. Of course, you may know them from their more recognizable hits such as “Mr. Brightside” from their smash debut album Hot Fuss and “When You Were Young” from the fan-favorite Sam’s Town. While their earlier work has certainly left its mark in the music industry, I ask that you indulge me for a moment as I nudge you to their latest album, Imploding the Mirage, released August 2020.
Experiencing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the album’s release was anything but “imminent”, but the final product was well worth the wait. The album is the band’s sixth record, and the first to not feature guitarist Dave Keuning. Bassist Mark Stoermer’s participation was also scaled down. This left lead singer Brandon Flowers and drummer Ronnie Vannuci, Jr. to figure out the creative process, resulting in an album that lives up to its name and blew up my mind.
The bassist for the Killers was born on June 28,1977 in Houston, Texas to a physician father and nurse mother. His dad also held a background as a musician in a big band. At the age of three, his family moved to Las Vegas, where he would graduate from Chaparral High School. His earliest musical influences were actually bands like Public Enemy, NWA, and other hip hop groups. Mark would later begin listening to rock groups like Nirvana, the Beatles, The Who, and Pink Floyd. Stoermer actually played lead guitar for a number of groups before he joined the Killers including Habit Rouge and the Negative Ponies. After graduating high school, the guitarist would attend UNLV to study music and philosophy. As a member of Negative Ponies, he met Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning as they had begun to play live as an early version of the Killers. Stoermer was actually a big fan of the band and their unique sound attending many of their shows in the early days. As he got to know Keuning and Flowers a bit more, they discussed the possibility of him joining the group as a possible guitarist. “They even asked me to join the band as a guitar player, because originally – at least according to Dave – they wanted to build a five-piece, possibly more like the Strokes with a keyboard. I was first asked to be a second guitar player and I casually mentioned I also play bass. And then one day I got the call from Dave." In September 2002, Mark became the band’s permanent bass player. He would play with the band full-time until 2016 when he made the decision to take a hiatus from the group. The group released a statement saying that he wanted “to pursue other educational goals and releasing a solo album." The statement also made it clear that the guitarist would still be participating on the subsequent record for the band, as well as touring occasionally. He would later say in an interview, “I'm taking a class online right now. The reason why I'm doing that is to take a break, but not exclusively. It's a combination of a lot of things. I've been doing the Killers since 2003 and I think about a thousand shows. I just needed to step away a while from that.” In 2017, Stoermer appeared with the group at the Glastonbury Festival and the Vegas Strong benefit concert.
The bassist has had a fairly prolific solo career over the past decade releasing his debut album in 2011 entitled Another Life. The record was made the previous year with Glenn Moule and Joel Stein of Howling Bells and Jason Hill of Louis XIV. With all his solo releases, St. August Records put the LP out on cd, vinyl, and iTunes. In 2016, he released The Dark Arts with assistance from David Hopkins. In an interview, the bassist talked about his plan with the release. “I wanted to do at least one [record] that was an album experience, even though the days of the album experience may be over. If anything, it may be a tribute to those times... Maybe someone out there will have that experience with this album." The sound on The Dark Arts is noticeably different than anything on any Killers album focusing on a type of sixties psychedelic sound. In promotion of the album, Stoermer created a backup band called The Hownds, who would play five shows in Las Vegas and five more in Los Angeles. In 2017, Stoermer released his third solo record entitled Filthy Apes and Lions with David Hopkins and Robert Root. The first single was “Filthy Apes and Lions,” which he discussed in an interview. “I was doing a stream-of-consciousness, surrealistic exercise where you just write out whatever's on the top of your head, and then I started creating rhymes, not really knowing where I was going, and then that's where I got the lyrics for the song [...] "Filthy Apes and Lions."
Over the years, Stoermer has worked as a producer for other artists and collaborated as a musician too. In 2010, he produced the third album from Howling Bells, which was recorded at Battle Born Studios in Las Vegas. In 2014, Mark played bass with Dhani Harrison as part of a George Harrison celebration on Conan O’Brien.
That same year, he toured with the Smashing Pumpkins in support of their new album, Monuments to an Elegy. He had this to say about the decision to join Billy Corgan on stage. “In addition to the nostalgia aspect, I also had to hear the new music, which I think is great. If the new music wasn't up to par, I wouldn't be doing it. I felt like, yeah, it was one of those things I had to do.” Stoermer would join the group for “Maida Vale” on BBC in December of 2014, as well as playing “Being Beige” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Within the Killers, Mark has the nickname of Gentle Giant due to the fact he is 6’5, but has a very introverted and quiet personality. His playing style within the Killers has also changed throughout his tenure with the group. For the first two releases, his guitar was aggressive, but Day and Age saw it change to a much more funk-based style. More recently beginning with Battle Born, his bass has been much more understated. In 2009, the guitarist was featured on the cover of the June issue of Bass Guitar Magazine.

Around August of this year the album was technically ready to be released but I intentionally put it off once again to stay out of the way of the band’s LP5. With that in mind, I did not want to hold onto my record until 2018 considering most of these songs are a year or two old. Besides, it is so different in terms of musical style and size of project that it shouldn’t be an issue. If The Killers are a giant fuji apple, my solo record is a baby mandarin orange.
