"Stars form from the gravitational collapse of turbulent, magnetized molecular cloud cores. Our non-ideal MHD simulations reveal that the intrinsically anisotropic magnetic resistance to gravity during the core collapse naturally generates dense gravomagneto sheetlets within inner protostellar envelopes – disrupted versions of classical sheet-like pseudo-discs. They are embedded in a magnetically dominant background, where less dense materials flow along the local magnetic field lines and accumulate in the dense sheetlets. The sheetlets, which feed the disc predominantly through its upper and lower surfaces, are the primary channels for mass and angular momentum transfer from the envelope to the disc. The protostellar disc inherits a small fraction (up to 10 per cent) of the magnetic flux from the envelope, resulting in a disc-averaged net vertical field strength of 1–10 mG and a somewhat stronger toroidal field, potentially detectable through ALMA Zeeman observations.

The inherited magnetic field from the envelope plays a dominant role in disc angular momentum evolution, enabling the formation of gravitationally stable discs in cases where the disc field is relatively well-coupled to the gas. Its influence remains significant even in marginally gravitationally unstable discs formed in the more magnetically diffusive cases, removing angular momentum at a rate comparable to or greater than that caused by spiral arms. The magnetically driven disc evolution is consistent with the apparent scarcity of prominent spirals capable of driving rapid accretion in deeply embedded protostellar discs. Carbon Quantum Dots In Environmental Remediation

Abstract
Carbon quantum dots (CQD), is highly stable, biocompatible, and low toxic fluorescence nonomaterial that extensively used in different scientific disciplines such as design and construction of low-cost chemical and biological sensors, cell imaging, clinical diagnosing, and drug loading. Due to their optoelectronic properties, they have recently used in remediation studies as an alternative to or mixed with metal semiconductors. Having used CQD, an economic and green technique in environmental pollution remediation is introduced. Remediation happens through the ability of CQD composites in adsorption of pollutants or using its photo catalytic action. Herein, some recent applications in the environmental pollutant remediation are reviewed.
Introduction
CQDs are a new type of carbon nanomaterial accidentally found in 2004 through purification of single-wall carbon nano tubes [1]. They have attracted much scientific attention since they are stable photoluminescence particles with high chemical stability, low toxicity, and biocompatible as well as having optoelectronic properties. They are produced by different chemical or natural carbon rich precursors in one pot process by different heating methods [1-4]. The CQDs properties have tuned by surface modification through different synthetic protocols and using different chemical reagents [5] for a vast variety of applications since 2004. CQDs have strong and stable luminescence, and have been used in chemical sensors, optoelectronics [6-8] bacterial detection [9], cancer diagnosis [10], cell imaging [11] and drug loading [12].
Exposure of CQDs with photons of energy equal or higher than its band gap leads to the transfer of the electron from the valence band to the conduction band, producing an electron-hole. Both electron and hole on the surface of the CQDs gives it the ability to act as both electron donor and acceptor, and promote oxidation-reduction on the surface of the dots [13]. Doping CQD with dozens of elements like N, P, and S have induced a shift in the photoluminescence wavelength, and suggest its applications as an efficient catalyst. Photo catalytic degradation of organic pollutions and microorganism is extensively reported in the literature using semiconductors [13].The high photo activity of the catalyst has a vital role in the oxidation or reduction of the pollutants. Photo catalytic activity of CQDs improved by incorporating elements such as nitrogen on the surface, and preparation of a composite with other semiconductors such as TiO2. Pollutant remediation using CQDs is mainly due to the photo catalytic properties. But adsorption of the pollutants on the surface of CQDs composites is another strategy has rarely been used up to now. However, the application of CQDs in the pollutant remediation is briefly discussed and listed. Photocatalytic Degradation of Pollutants is an Title CQDs under photon irradiation generate electron-hole and acts as the visible light photo catalyst in environmental remediation and energy transfer reactions. A few reports on the application of CQDs for adsorption of environmental pollutants are available in the literature. Some recent application of CQDs, doped CQDs, and their composites with other nano particles, in environmental remediation, is reported in (Table 1) and discussed. Photo catalytic conversion of CO2 to organic acids by nitrogen doped CQD (NCQDs) with visible light irradiation was more efficient than colloidal TiO2 under UV radiations [5]. Martin et al [13] also synthesized nitrogen doped CQD by hydrothermal irradiation using glycerol as the carbon source and 4,7,10 trioxa-1,13- tridecanediamine for nitrogen doping. They prepared NCQD/ TiO2 nano composite and showed that photo catalytic activity of nano composite for methylene blue and NO remediation is higher than those for TiO2. Super paramagnetic nitrogen doped CQD /magnetite nano composites (Fe3O4@NCQD) [14,15] were used for removal of methyl blue from polluted water samples. They used lemon juice as a green carbon precursor and ethylene amine as the nitrogen source for CQD surface functionalization.
As-prepared Fe3O4@NCQD adsorbs 90.84% methyl blue from aqueous solutions in 20 min. Particles were separated from the solution by a magnet, methyl blue has been desorbed by hydrochloric acid, and the recovered particles were used five times without any considerable changes in the removal efficiency. CQD/nitrogen-doped ZnO (CQD/N-ZnO) composite was prepared and used for photo catalytic degradation of three commercial dyes, malachite green, methylene blue and fluoresce in under daylight irradiation. The composite removes all three dyes within 30-45 minutes [16]. CQDs-TiO2nanosheet (CQDs- TNS) composites were prepared and used in photo catalytic degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation [17].
It was reported that photo catalytic activity of CQDs-TNS was higher than CQDs/TiO2 and pure TNS. Catalytic H2 production using highly crystalline CQDs on 2D C3N4nanosheets was reported [18]. Hydrogen peroxide produced during the reaction promotes bisphenol a removal. Excellent photo catalytic activity was observed for ternary mixture of CQDs/Ag/Ag2O [19]. The ternary photo catalyst removed methylene blue and Rhodamine B from aqueous solution. Composite of CQDs with g-C3N4nanosheet was also reported as an excellent photo catalyst for the degradation of rhodamine B and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) under visible light irradiation [20]. Tetracycline mineralization by the composite of Ag+-CDs-Bi2WO6 [21] via photo catalytic reactions under visible light is also reported. The Ag+-CDs-Bi2WO6 has excellent stability even when recycled and reused for several times. Fe (III)-functionalized carbon dots (Fe(III)-CQDs) was used for remediation of hydrogen peroxide as well as olefin hydrogenation with high selectivity [22]. A green approach applied to the synthesis of La/Cu/Zr/CQDs tri metallic nano composites as both adsorptive and catalytic agent for pollutant remediation [23]. It has been observed that 96% ampicillin antibiotic and 86% of malachite green were degraded in 4 h. The prepared Bi2O3/ CQDs photo catalysts [24] showed the best photo catalytic activity in rhodamine B elimination. A new CQDs/ Bi2WO6 were applied in the remediation of methyl orange and bisphenol A in aqueous solution [25]. A novel ternary photo catalyst of single atom-dispersed silver and carbon quantum dots co-loaded with ultrathin g-C3N4 (Ag-CQDs- gC3N4) was synthesized [26]. Environment-Friendly CQDs/ ZnFe2O4 photo catalyst was synthesized and introduced as a biocompatible catalyst for NO removal in the atmosphere [27]. The catalyst has low cytotoxicity and is a good candidate for air purification. Application of CQDs was extended to the removal of microorganism from aqueous solution. Recently, multiwall carbon nano tube fiber incorporated CQDs (MWCNT-F/CQDs) composite has been proved as highly efficient material for bacterial removal from aqueous solution and inhibition of their activity [28]. In this study, the inhibitory rates for E. coli were 94.21% on the MWCNT filter surfaces coated with 0.2 mg CQDs.
Conclusion
To sum up, CQDs are introduced recently as the visible light photo catalyst for environmental remediation. The catalytic activity of CQDs increases by metals doping or making composites with the other semiconductor. Adsorption ability of CQDs for environmental pollutants are not well investigated. Another outstanding action of CQDs is in bacterial growth inhibition and removal from aqueous solution. Overall, CQDs is a green and biocompatible material for treatment and purification of water and atmosphere.

Whereas the primary heat source early on comes from accretion, and orbital dynamics can lead to further heating through tidal squeezing, the ongoing thermal evolution of many rocky planets is likely controlled by radiogenic heat production. In particular, the radioactive isotopes of uranium (U) and thorium (Th) have long half-lives and so may be significant in deciding the long-term geodynamic history. The authors of today’s bite argue that the exact concentrations of such elements in a planet’s mantle could decide the presence and strength of that world’s magnetic field. Dynamo theory holds that magnetic fields are generated by circulation of conductive fluids. In the case of Earth, convection of hot liquid metals in the outer core may be generating our magnetic field (see centre image). This outer core dynamo shuffles heat outward from the planet’s interior and its efficiency is controlled by the temperature of the overlying mantle. Thus, our magnetic field can be linked to heat production in the mantle that is mainly due to the decay of radiogenic elements. But what would it mean if our planet happened to have more or less of these elements? In general, the composition of a planet should be similar to that of its host star since they coalesced from the same stuff. Therefore, we should be able to measure the elemental abundance of a star and say something about its planets. However, concentrations of some elements can vary significantly from star to star due to the different processes that produce them. So-called r-process elements like U and Th are likely distributed unevenly throughout the galaxy because they only form under the extreme conditions of rare processes like neutron star merger events. For understanding radiogenic heat production in the mantle of a planet, the presence of U and Th is important in terms of its concentration relative to the bulk mass of silicates. The ratio of europium to magnesium (Eu/Mg) serves as a good proxy for this — useful since U and Th are hard to detect in the spectra of stars. Given typical measurements of Eu and Mg, the authors consider that radiogenic heat production in the mantle of similar planets may vary from roughly 30% to 300% of the Earth’s 15 terawatts. The models at the center of today’s paper are relatively simple compared to more computationally expensive 2D or 3D models, but are sufficient to see how changing a parameter like mantle heat production could affect a planet’s evolution. They consider the timeline of three identical Earths, where the only difference is having less U and Th (lower image), Earth-like concentrations (Figure 2b), or more U and Th (lower image). All cases assume that plate tectonics contributes to heat transfer, because previous work suggests magnetic dynamos are more likely under conditions conducive to plate tectonics, despite its presence not being a certainty (see Venus, for example). In the lower image, the authors use entropy production as a proxy for the likelihood and intensity of a dynamo. The entropy production rate determines the presence of a dynamo based on whether it exceeds the adiabatic entropy rate, where the adiabat defines the expected temperature and pressure conditions for the mantle. Dynamo convection is at first due to extraction of heat into the mantle that gradually declines, but rapidly increases again after the core cools enough to begin solidifying. This extra burst of activity is due to “compositional buoyancy” where solidification of the core releases light elements into the fluid above. As a good starting point, the trend predicted by the model for normal Earth (lower image) matches geologic observations that the Earth has had an active magnetic field for over 3.5 billion years, though it turned off or weakened at least once for a few million years. In fact, it seems that Earth was just on the threshold for having a consistently active dynamo, based on how the entropy production may have briefly dipped below the threshold around one billion years ago. In the case of less radiogenic heat than normal Earth (lower image), solid core formation starts earlier and the dynamo is easily maintained. In the case of more radiogenic heat (lower image), the dynamo may turn off for hundreds of millions of years because a high-temperature mantle isn’t as effective at extracting heat from the core. So, opposite to what you might expect, the authors find that more radiogenic heat in the mantle leads to less core heat flux, less dynamo, and a smaller solid core. A more thorough view of the effect of radiogenic heat can be seen in bottom image. The concentration of radiogenic elements could affect the habitability of the planet based on whether they are of low enough abundance to allow for a magnetic dynamo. Though some disagree, it is generally thought that a magnetic field helps shield a planet from solar particles which may otherwise erode the atmosphere. On the other hand, higher radiogenic heat in the mantle is expected to cause more volcanism, which likely releases much of the volatiles that allow for a thick, comfy atmosphere. The authors point out that their model probably misses some of the complex feedbacks that may occur here, especially with the many unknowns about plate tectonics, but ultimately argue that the abundance of r-process elements (as seen from stellar Eu/Mg ratios) should be seen as another important factor to consider in the search for habitable exoplanets. Interestingly, it has been found that lower quantities of radiogenic isotopes are present farther from the galactic center. Also, older stars are found to have smaller amounts of these heavy elements — however, today’s authors expect the random distribution due to r-process rarity to ultimately have the strongest influence on U and Th abundances. The more we learn about what makes Earth’s systems work, the more we will know about what to look for in our searches of the skies for habitable worlds.
