The Surfboard Galaxy (M108, upper right) and the Owl Nebula (M97, lower left) // David Cheng

Located near the Owl Nebula (M97) on the sky, the Surfboard Galaxy was discovered by Méchain in 1781, only three nights after he found M97. Messier himself observed it about a month later, although he didn't measure its position and so did not include it in his catalog.

William Herschel (1738-1822) independently discovered it in 1789. It wasn't until 1953 when American astronomer Owen Gingerich (1930-2023) identified it as M108.

⚠️ NEW DISCOVERY ALERT

The central star of the nebula appears to be GALEX J014721.3-440504, a very very ultraviolet hot white dwarf candidate star. Eric Mamajek on Twitter left this interesting note:

"only 6 stars in white dwarf catalog of Gentile Fusillo+2021 (2021MNRAS.508.3877G) within 1 kpc are both bluer and brighter, and include interesting list: central stars of M97/Owl Neb, NGC1360/Robin's Egg Neb, Jacoby 1, PG1159(!), PG1151-029 and GD1532. Someone should get a spectrum to get Teff - SED is so hot, models suggest >40,000K (plenty of UV) but could be way hotter. UV, visible, IR don't constrain it well other than "hot!"."

I discovered this nebula while imaging my other discovery in Phoenix, Falls object 3. The two nebulae are very close together, enough to fit in a 135mm lens field of view ;) This one of course took preference given its size. I named it "The Phoenix Nebula" because it is by far the most dominating feature of the entire Phoenix constellation. In the same way that Orion inherits the constellation name, this one will inherit the Phoenix name.

This thing is faint faint faint. The Ha is extremely faint, probably the weakest Ha signal I have ever imaged. The Oiii itself wasn't the worst in the world in terms of faintness. All the data was acquired from Hakos astro farm with the fsq85, and I am really starting to feel the slowness of f/5 with these objects.

The Owl Nebula, M97 // Scotty Bishop

The name comes from its distinctive shape. When the original star collapsed, it expelled matter in two opposing directions. Those two jets are almost aligned with our line-of-sight, but are just slightly off. The dust in the jets blocks some of the light in the nebula, giving it the appearance of two dark eyes.

Although it was discovered by Méchain in 1781, it was William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse (1800-1867) who drew this nebula in 1848 and noted it's owl-like appearance: "Two stars considerably apart in the central region, dark penumbra round each spiral arrangement, with stars as apparent centres of attraction. Stars sparkling in it; resolvable."

Valeria Sandino Charlotte Cotton’s Reading Response From Charlotte Cotton’s The Photograph as Contemporary Art, Chapter 5: Intimate Life

I chose to focus on photographer Yang Yong. This is a photograph from the latest exhibition, “On Edge” (September 6 - October 16, 2011), of his that I could find pictures of online, all of the more recent ones had no photos I could scroll through. The exhibition was a solo exhibit of his works spanning the last three years of his photography taken in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing, presented in the m97 Gallery at Shanghai. His subjects for the exhibit were all Chinese born women born during the 70s and 80s who have been slowly shifting away from Chinese traditional presentation into models of western females as they traverse different expansive cities.

Yang Yong’s work is extremely interesting to me, especially his earlier work presented in Charlotte Cotton’s book. The colors in his photographs captivate me, they remind me of one of my favorite directors: Wong Kar Wai. His films are very stylized, especially in his use of powerfully rich color grading to further express symbolism and metaphors in his films. Wong Kar Wai’s colors greatly parallel that of Yong’s which is something I would like to create as well. In his later works, such as the photo I selected, it seems as though he has cooled down on his color grading and has gone for increasingly normal tones of color, or tones similar to that of the human eye. Even though he has changed his style for most of the photographs in this particular exhibit, I am still adamant about his photographs such as the one I selected. It is interesting compositionally and creates a mood and tone I would love to explore. It is mysterious and beautifully composed in her pose and the framing of the photograph. Her movement is dynamic and mysterious as her eyes are shaded in shadows, smoking a cigarette. In early film noir she would be deemed as an antagonistic or villainous character by the lack of clear visibility of her eyes; it adds mystery and gloom, emphasized by her smoking of a cigarette. Protagonists and ‘good guys’ always had their eyes clearly visible, even with a ‘sparkle’ or ‘glimmer’ reflecting in their eyes, without this audience’s tended to be scared or spooked by the character.
