hi gina ! i’m doing an essay for my sociology class at the moment about the term double consciousness and i’m talking about queer people in the 50’s. i brought up polari and the slang that gay men used to use to communicate with one another and it just kind of hit me all over again, the fact that louis wore their brand!! i’ve never doubted the fact that louis’ gay, but oh my god?? how can people possibly deny the fact that he’s gay, especially taking polari into account? it’s kind of undeniable and insane to me when i really think long and hard about it.

Yeah, I thought that was such a loud thing for him to do, too.

Hello and welcome to week two of projectotb! We hope you enjoyed last week, we loved seeing all your amazing work! This week on Memory Mondays' we shall be talking about Polari.

Now, what exactly is Polari?

Until 1967, homosexual sex was illegal in England and Wales. To avoid imprisonment, gay men used Polari, a language that the Oxford English Dictionary says is “made up of Italianate phrases, rhyming slang and cant terms.” It had sprung up in the 1700s and 1800s as a secret language vagrants, itinerant performers, sailors and “gypsies” – many of its words, in fact, derive from the Romany people scattered across Europe. - via BBC Culture

Basicaally, Polari is a form of slang incorporating Italianate words, rhyming slang, and Romani. It was used originally as a kind of secret language by people in theatres, fairgrounds, markets, etc and was adopted by some gay people in the 20th century to avoid imprisonment, as it was illegal back then.

I came across your Louis x Polari post. Do you have any updated theories? I see their Instagram is full of H&L references but there’s nothing specific I can tie back to either of them.

Hi sorry this is late I'm not on here as much as I used to..

In my very honest opinion they are just clout chasing.. if they post a photo related to the boys they get around 30-40k likes. When they don't it gets on average 3-5k, often less.

So every few months when everyone has forgotten about them they post something blue/green or the boys and boom, engagement 🤷‍♀️

I could say “the sky is blue” and I’d get an anon yelling about how I’m ignoring the non visible colors on the spectrum and how it’s really only the atmosphere reflecting exclusively blue light that deceives us into the perception that the sky is blue….

The anon is saying that Louis adopted a stereotypical chav persona post 1D that directly opposed the way he used to move, act, and express himself. Obviously gay people like beer and football. I fucking like football (american). It was a broader allusion to the chav persona not the specifics of liking football, or being BRITISH. Please, I’m tired.

Louis and Harry and Polari

Polari has published (and re-published) pics of Louis 14 times since 2017 and H 5 times during 2021-2022, Pleasing once, and an additional 4 posts which could potentially reference Louis and bluegreening.

The Polari IG account was set up in May 2017 and its first post was on 28 😜 May 2017.

Its current (Dec 2022) shared followers in common are all 1D band and solo and related accounts, giving Polari's posts an extensive audience reach to fans of Louis and H.

Is Polari's usage of Louis' and H's imagery a marketing ploy of the company, or do the guys have a genuine relationship with Polari?

Worth keeping an eye on anyway!
