Lil Wayne - Funeral ALBUM REVIEW

As much as I love him, Lil Wayne has never been the most consistent guy. While he has fantastic projects like No Ceilings, Tha Carter albums and a few of the Dedications, his catalog contains a lot of music that I don’t care for such as his first couple of albums and the hilarious I Am Not A Human Being II. In 2018, Weezy finally released Tha Carter V, his highly-anticipated and heavily delayed twelfth studio album. Even though it was way too long and could have been trimmed down by a lot, I really liked Tha Carter V and I thought it was the best body of work that he had put out in many years. Even before the release of Tha Carter V, Wayne was teasing another album called Funeral. He didn’t really say anything about it other than that it was coming out. Lil Wayne doesn’t really have anything at this point in his career to prove and with Tha Carter V, he gave his fans the different styles of music that he has made throughout the years and he continues to do that on Funeral. Wayne revealed that the album is called Funeral because it is supposed to follow up his 2010 album, Rebirth. Outside of the title, these albums are not really connected at all. Rebirth was a rock album and it wasn’t really focused on rapping at all. Funeral is all about the rapping. Much like Tha Carter V, Funeral is way too long. I don’t need this much music. I understood why C5 was long because so much music like accumulated for the album over time and it took a while for the album to come out so it made sense. Funeral is just long because it is. Also, Funeral is not nearly as good. The album starts out really well. The intro was cool and I loved the way that the beat came in. The best song on the album is easily Mahogany by a landslide. That beat is so dope. I absolutely love the way those vocals are chopped up and Wayne is really rapping his ass off. His wordplay is still fantastic and this is the type of Wayne I love and want to hear more from. This is the Wayne we heard on Tha Carter V and it’s the Wayne I’m talking about when I say I like his music. While there are a few good songs sprinkled throughout the rest of this 24-track album, this album’s quality declined so quickly. C5 had skippable tracks spread out through the tracklist but Funeral is mostly skips. One of the biggest issues is the production. Aside of Mahogany, Stop Playin Wit Me, and Piano Trap, the beats are so basic and don’t have enough personality to be enjoyable. I’m all for songs without hooks, but when it comes to 24-track albums with weak production, just rapping isn’t gonna do it for me. While Wayne is killing it on Mama Mia, that beat sounds like someone blowing their nose really hard with some effects on it. One of the most disappointing things is that Wayne is rapping really well on this album. He sounds like he’s trying but the songs that these dope verses are on are not very good. A lot of the songs sound the same because of the production or the autotuned melodies are too similar. The really awful tracks stand out more to me. Don’t Cry with XXXTentacion was tolerable even though I didn’t love it but Get Outta My Head with XXXTentacion was horrible. Trust Nobody with Adam Levine had no business being on the album at all. Lil Twist’s verse on Ball Hard ruined the whole song. Clap For Em sounds like an updated remix of the song Ball with T.I., but it is equally as bad. Wayne’s past collaborations with Jay Rock and 2 Chainz were pretty good but the ones on this album are pretty disappointing, especially Bing James with Jay Rock—and that isn’t Jay Rock’s fault. He had a good verse. Songs like Piano Trap and Harden are dope and signs of relief as they are sequenced near some pretty bad songs. I do like Wayne a lot and there are some dope songs on this album but it’s not nearly as good as Wayne has the potential to be. If he can make Mahogany, then he has the ability to put together another great album. This just wasn’t really the one.
