TRENQUE LAUQUEN (Laura Citarella, just named the best film of 2023 by Cahiers du Cinéma) x BLUE VELVET (David Lynch, 1986)
I highly recommend TRENQUE LAUQUEN, particularly if you're into long, episodic, subtly elliptical mystery-films set in small towns that are written, starring, and about Lauras.
It evokes these Lynch moments, in addition to the above:

Best Original Screenplay
Winner
May December, by Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik
It’s a strange part of acting. Sometimes it’s really mechanical, choreographed like a dance, where the only thing you can really think about is where you’re supposed to be and when. But sometimes there’s a genuine chemistry between two people, and it feels sort of real in this strange way, not that either of you would ever admit it. But you’re wearing practically nothing and rubbing up against each other. Sweating. For hours. You start to lose the line of…am I pretending to be experiencing pleasure or am I pretending that I’m not experiencing pleasure? And the crew is almost always all men, and you can feel them watching. Holding their breath. Trying to hide it when they have to swallow. You can give in to the rhythm of it. Over and over, but the tension never breaks.
Nominees
La Chimera, by Alice Rohrwacher
It's of inestimable value. That's what we're here for, to estimate the inestimable.
Other People's Children, by Rebecca Zlotowski
I was with my high school sweetheart Paul. He works for a newspaper now. I thought we could just not think about it, that it would happen one day and we’d keep it. That it would be simple. Then that day came and I didn’t keep it. I think he hated me, he would’ve wanted it. But we never talked about it again. And I know that If my mom had been alive I would’ve made a different decision. Maybe that’s why I’ve waited so long, maybe too long, because it reminds me of her.
Is it so awful not to have kids?
It’s not awful. I don’t think a woman’s incomplete without them but maybe I’m a little proud to be part of the community of women who don’t have kids. But still, it’s a huge collective experience across the world that I’m not part of.
Past Lives, by Celine Song
Who do you think they are to each other?
Hmm. I don’t know.
Yeah this is a hard one.
I think the white guy and the Asian girl are a couple, and the Asian guy is her brother.
Or the Asian girl and the Asian guy are a couple and the white guy is their American friend.
They’re not even talking to the white guy.
Maybe they’re tourists and the white guy is their tour guide.
Drinking at 4 am?
Yeah you’re right that makes no sense.
Maybe they’re all just colleagues.
I have no idea.
Trenque Lauquen, by Laura Citarella and Laura Paredes
I’m going to record this for you, and leave it for you here, at the radio. Just for you. This is a secret Juli. When you listen to this please don't share it with anyone. I’m leaving and I need someone to know. I don’t want to be the only one who knows. But I don’t want you to tell anyone either. I’ll be in touch but I’m going to be ok. Especially that I know it’s going to be great. Don’t look for me, unless something really strange happens. When you hear this and everyone’s looking for me and wondering where I am, I’m going to be ok. I’m going to be doing what I want to do or what no one even thinks I could be doing. I don’t know if that’s clear. You’ll be wondering why I’m recording you this. I don’t know. I’ll start with the alligator.
Tótem, by Lila Avilés
There is a luminous part of the sun, because there is a sun in the underworld. The Lacandons say that the jaguar is walking at this moment in the nocturnal sun. But there is a sun, a sun that shines and though it might be the midday sun, it does not fear its decline, and shines without sadness until the evening.
