Welcome to the F.C.U. (The Fargo Cinematic Universe)
In 1996, Joel & Ethan Coen created what many feel is their masterwork film, the murder mystery, crime drama, sociological regional study we lovingly know as Fargo. Near the end of the film, the only remaining living suspect, Gaear Grimsrud, is found stuffing the foot of his former partner in crime into a wood chipper near a cabin on a pristine frozen lake in the dead of winter. When the true hero of the film, pregnant law enforcement officer Marge Gunderson, stumbles across the crime scene, she shoots the eerily vacant-eyed psychopath in the leg as he tries to escape across the lake. As she transports him back across that frozen white tundra, she tries to make sense of the inconceivable tragedy which has unfolded.
“So, that was Mrs. Lundegaard on the floor in there,” says Gunderson. “And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper.  And those three people in Brainerd.  And for what? For a little bit of money? There's more to life than a little money, you know.  Don'tcha know that?  And here ya are, and it's a beautiful day.  Well.  I just don't understand it.”
It was an amazingly well-crafted moment and perfectly captured our feeling of revulsion and bewilderment.  Why would anyone commit those horrific acts on another human being?  What could happen in anyone’s life that would allow him or her to think that this was any way to behave?  Fargo would go on to win two Academy Awards – one for Frances McDormand for Best Actress and one for the Coen brothers for Best Screenplay.
I’ll be the first to admit that when FX announced it was doing a television version of Fargo, I was very skeptical.  I mean, how could FX top the movie?  Without the Coen brothers?
Well, the third season of showrunner-extraordinaire Noah Hawley’s expansion of that world is now underway on the FX network.  What began as a sparse, tightly written 98 minute film has now spawned two (going on three) seasons of gripping crime drama with a healthy dose of absurdist humor and a sprinkle of supernatural goings-on.   So what’s the secret?  How was Hawley and his team of writers able to so brilliantly capture the magic?  Not since M*A*S*H has there been such a critically renowned film that’s been turned into an unforgettable television program.
So here, then, are the ingredients for what I think you need to create what I think is the most imaginative program on television.
Strong female lead characters
It is a tired old trope, but with very few exceptions, crime dramas generally tend to have far more testosterone.  Fargo, I can happily report, is the exception to the rule.  Following in the film’s footsteps, the lead female characters are strong-willed, capable women who can take care of themselves, thank you very much.  Molly Solverson (played by Allison Tolman) in season one and Carrie Coon’s character Gloria Burgle in season three are both dedicated, heroic police officers who innately can sense when something is amiss.  And Cristin Miliotti’s portrayal of Molly Solverson’s cancer inflicted mother Betsy in the time jump in season two is a testament to her acting ability and the level of writing on the show.
Even better, the women on the other side of the law are all well-drawn, motivated characters.  Jean Smart’s portrayal of the Gerhardt family matriarch was Emmy-worthy in season 2, as was Kirsten Dunst’s performance as hairdresser turned criminal Peggy Blumquist.  And my favorite femme fatale so far is season three’s stupendously-named Nikki Swango, wonderfully played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead.  Every time Nikki Swango is on screen you can almost hear Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation” playing in your mind.  You know she’s in charge, and her manipulation of Ray Stussy so far has been wondrous to behold.  The women in Fargo are every bit as heroic, villainous, dedicated and savage as the men, if not more so.
Quirky Secondary Characters
Maybe it’s the accents.  Maybe it’s the names.  Whatever it is, the secondary characters in Fargo are so cleverly created.  Every character has a significant purpose in the plot and every character seems to have personality quirks which draw us in.   Bokeem Woodbine’s Mike Milligan, the philosophizing hit man.  Brad Garrett’s Joe Bulo, an almost bureaucratic mob boss.  Nick Offerman’s hilarious portrayal of Karl Weathers, an alcoholic libertarian lawyer.  Ted Danson’s gentle Sheriff Hank Larsson who is trying to create a new language to foster greater understanding between people.  And my favorite, the always reliable Oliver Platt and his portrayal of supermarket king Stavros Milos, whose discovery of a certain briefcase full of cash on a lone, desolate highway connects the television Fargo with the movie.
Star Power
The ever expanding list of top flight actors who appear in Fargo is truly mindboggling.  The shorter shooting seasons which have now become the norm in television dramas has allowed an influx of a-team talent to lend the very capable writers a never ending parade of remarkable performances.  When your program can list the names above as well as Billy Bob Thornton, Bob Odenkirk, Keith Carradine, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Stephen Root, Adam Goldberg, Patrick Wilson, Jesse Plemons, Adam Arkin and David Thewlis, you’re doing something right.
Family Rivalries
Each season seems to focus, at least partially, on a rivalry between family members.  Whether it’s desperate bad guy wannabe Lester Nygaard (played by Martin Freeman ditching his British accent) sneaking out of the hospital in the middle of the night to plant evidence to frame his brother Chazz for murder, or the season long war between the crime family Gerhardt brothers in season two, Fargo excels at capturing the out and out animosity that can (and frequently does) exist between siblings.  Season three’s stunt casting of Ewan MacGregor playing both Ray and Emmit Stussy, brothers in conflict over a rare stamp and a decrepit Corvette Stingray, continues the almost biblical family battles we have seen to date.
Unfathomable Pinhead-ery and the Inevitability of Fate
When Nikki describes the official cause of death of drug addict Maurice LeFay, a parolee who was crushed by a two-hundred pound air conditioner pushed out of a window by Swango and her lover Ray Stussy after accidentally killing the wrong victim at the wrong address, as “unfathomable pinhead-ery,” you know you’ve struck gold.  Many of the plot complications on Fargo are not the result of a master criminal carrying out a complicated, Ocean’s Eleven-type scheme.  Inevitably, the crimes committed in Fargo are of the purely accidental variety and are the worst possible idea anyone could ever have in their short, strange lives.  The ideas never work, but the randomness of the crimes lead to a far greater ripple effect of violence and bloodshed.  Those ripples always begin as diminutive pebbles thrown into the frozen waters in this series.  But those ripples always grow exponentially into destructive waves.
The fact that we know almost certainly that certain characters will meet their end is something we always see coming from the beginning.  But what is remarkable is how the characters meet their ends.  After Lester spends the better part of ten episodes wiggling out of one jam after another following the mutually agreed upon murder of his wife by supernova of evil Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton), Lester finally dies by falling into a hole in the ice trying to evade the police, echoing the previous accidental death of a man mistaken for Lorne Malvo.  Whether the death is by a plummeting air conditioner, the sudden random savagery of murdering twenty-two people in an office building, being hit by a car after murdering everyone in a diner or a car accident caused by a mysterious rainstorm of fish, the inevitable fate met by Fargo’s characters is probably one of the most satisfying and inventive aspects of Fargo.
Beautiful and Inventive Cinematography
I could spend pages just writing about the camera work done on this series.  So many moments of stark beauty, creative storytelling and flat out kick ass cinematography.  Case in point.  The P.O.V. camera on the air conditioner falling in free flight.  Or how about the final shot of the season opening pre-title sequence in East Berlin that slow zooms into a picture on the wall of what will become the Stussy backyard looking at rows of frosted trees in what is now the traditional Fargo title sequence.  Gorgeous and forlorn horizontal lines of tundra and snow.  The camera work on Fargo challenges the standard bearer Breaking Bad on creative placement and use of cameras.
Unspeakably evil characters with little to no compunction of any sense of morality
And…
Morally ambivalent characters who find themselves tempted to commit crimes either by accident or the temptation of a better life
In Fargo, these two categories go hand in hand.  The absolute evil of Lorne Malvo and his ingenious yet devious means of eliminating his targets is an example of the first category from season one.  As is the hilarious savagery of David Thewlis as the mobster/money launderer V. M. Varga in season three.  The truly evil characters in Fargo don’t care a whit about life or the morality of protecting it.   Inevitably, there is a huge chemical reaction when the truly evil meet the morally ambivalent.  (spoiler alert – evil always wins due to a failure to recognize that evil doesn’t care about a “no rough stuff type of deal.”)  The moments where the morally ambivalent see the true depths of depravity that humans are capable of recalls what Marge Gunderson was commenting on in that police cruiser.
What’s most remarkable about both the film and the television show is that writing never stoops to condescension; the plots and characters in Fargo are not being written in a fashion seeking to humiliate the people who live in the northern Midwest “flyover states.”  Instead, the world Fargo inhabits is simply the setting of a grand drama, like Elsinore, Verona or Athens.  The characters may have funny accents we’re not used to hearing, but they are fully developed three dimensional characters who only enliven and enrich what is arguably the best program on television.

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. | Firefighters battle to curb wildfire before winds return
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/caeOKo
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. | Firefighters battle to curb wildfire before winds return
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — Aircraft turned hillsides red with retardant as homeowners wet their houses with garden hoses in a battle to contain an arson wildfire, which prompted evacuation orders for more than 20,000 people south of Los Angeles.
Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency Thursday night for Orange and Riverside counties as a four-day-old fire carved its way along ridges and hillsides of the Cleveland National Forest.
Brown’s proclamation said thousands of homes were threatened by the fire in the foothills above Lake Elsinore and nearby communities and ordered state agencies to help local governments.
Firefighters planned to work through the night to gain ground against the blaze before the expected Friday afternoon return of blustery winds that might drive the flames to new ferocity.
A resident of Holy Jim Canyon in the forest was scheduled for a court hearing Friday on charges that he deliberately set the fire. Forrest Clark, 51, is charged with arson and other crimes and could face life in prison if convicted. It wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer.
Michael Milligan, chief of the Holy Jim Volunteer Fire Department, has told the Orange County Register that Clark had a decade-long feud with neighbors and sent him threatening emails last week, including one that said, “this place will burn.” Ironically, his cabin was the only one in the canyon to survive the flames, the newspaper reported.
As flames raged closer to foothill homes on Thursday, some residents ignoring evacuation orders stood in driveways or on top of roofs and used garden hoses to wet down their property as smoke billowed around them.
Joe Rodriguez, 38, used a power washer on his patio in the McVicker Canyon Park neighborhood.
“Until this thing is barking at my door, I’m going to stick with it,” he told the San Bernardino Sun.
Firefighters fought a desperate battle as huge flames came within yards of some homes, feeding on dense, dry chaparral and propelled by 20-mph (30-kph) gusts. They want to encircle the fire before it can devour neighborhoods and take lives, as gigantic fires still burning in Northern California have done.
“Our main focus this afternoon was getting everyone out safely,” said Thanh Nguyen, a spokesman for the crews battling the Holy Fire.
Phil Williams, 57, stayed near his home in Brookstone Ranch, an unincorporated community of about 5,000 people. His family and pets evacuated along with most of his neighbors but as a member of the local water district, he stayed to help out.
Late Thursday night, he described seeing 70-foot-tall (21-meter) flames creeping within 150 yards of his large yard. “It’s all tinder and as soon as the flames hit it, it’s gone,” he said. “You can hear the fire coming. It truly does roar. ”
Williams, who had cut back brush around the home, said he planned to “wait for the sun’s up, see what’s left. Not much more than you can do.”
“If I didn’t do a good enough job, I’ll just rebuild,” he said. “It’s only sticks.”
Although the fire — named for the canyon where it started — destroyed a dozen cabins after breaking out Monday, fire crews were able to prevent further losses but the fire was still virtually uncontrolled as its growth nullified progress in corralling it. Wind speeds and temperatures dropped as night fell but gusty winds could pick up again Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service warned.
Meanwhile, two major wildfires — one called the Mendocino Complex Fire that is the largest in California history — were burning more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Sacramento.
Crews turned a corner and achieved 51 percent containment of the Mendocino Complex — actually twin fires that are being fought together. The fire destroyed more than 100 homes and has blackened an area about the size of the city of Los Angeles.
In the Redding area, the year’s deadliest fire was nearly half surrounded and was burning into remote and rugged forest land but grass, brush and trees there are so dry from years of drought and recent heat that the potential remained for the fire to grow, state fire officials said.
The Carr Fire, as it’s called, killed six people, including two firefighters, and burned more than 1,000 homes. Two other people — a state fire heavy equipment mechanic assigned to the fire and a utility worker trying to restore power near the fire— have died in car accidents.
The fires all grew explosively in the past two weeks as winds whipped the flames through forest and rural areas full of timber and brush that is bone-dry from years of drought and a summer of record-breaking heat.
Air quality has been another casualty of the fires. A smoky haze stretches from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range to Sacramento and hovers over the San Francisco Bay Area, with most major population centers in between suffering air quality that’s considered dangerous for children, the elderly and people with asthma or other respiratory conditions.
The smoke even drifted as far east as Salt Lake City in Utah. The sheer size of the fires is numbing in a state that is still reeling from enormous blazes last year and has yet to hit its historically most dangerous months.
Firefighters had almost contained a huge fire near Yosemite National Park.

He went where he wanted to go, when he wanted to. It wasn’t like his parents worried about him. They were either working late or too busy yelling at each other. Instead of staying home and listening to the same argument over and over again, Mike would sneak out of the house to meet up with his cousin Grant, who was also his best friend. Port Ashborne was full of places kids shouldn’t venture into, which was exactly where these two rascals went. One of their adventures included a trip to Lake Elsinore at night with a few other kids. Everything was going great. Past midnight, though, Mike saw a curious glimmer on the surface of the dark water. Without realizing, he was walking into the water. The next thing he remembered was drowning. When he looked down and saw pale, cold hands pulling him down. Then he surfaced, held by a soft, warm set of arms. But before he could see who it was, he fell unconscious.
When he woke up again, he was in a hospital bed. His parents were outside, yelling at each other again, blaming each other for what happened. Grant was next to him, crying. His cousin explained how he walked into the deep water like he was mesmerized, went underwater for a minute or so before someone pulled him out of the water. Listening to the story, Mike couldn’t help but look sideways for there were were shadows in the room, looming over him. When he asked Grant about them, he learned that no one else was able to see them. The whole accident led to several years of therapy, people telling him what he saw wasn’t real, that he had a sickness. His father was especially stern about it, did not ‘approve’ that his son saw things others couldn’t. It wasn’t long before he began to tell himself that he didn’t see anything, that there was no shadow staring at him from the corners, that he was simply imagining things. He looked away, chose to be unaware.
Surprisingly, rejection solved half of his problems. The other half was just life. His parents were still divorced, created a gap he had to jump over. He had a future to figure out, choices to make. He became a cop after his father. Mike married his high school sweetheart Regina. Their relationship wasn’t without bumps. She wanted to pursue her dream to be a lawyer, but it took her away from the town they grew up together. Few years of separation was enough to cause a rift between them. In the middle of that turmoil their son Oliver was born. At the time, Mike hoped the child would mend their relationship. No such luck, however. Their marriage fell apart in shambles eventually, leaving the ugly aftermath of divorce and joint custody.
While it wasn’t how he pictured his life would be, it went on whether he liked it or not. Ten years had gone by before he realized it. Now his son is eleven-years old and he is a detective in Port Ashborne Police Department. His divorce is affecting him for he has to see his ex-wife every week for both family matters and job. To add complications in his life, not only the crime rate in Port Ashborne has spiked up, it has taken up a strange path. Impossible and even grotesque deaths visit his desk in a form of case files and goes unsolved. The chief is considering an alternative option of asking for ‘paranormal specialists’, a solution Mike is opposing with all his might. He is desperately searching for a way to explain the impossible. Needless to say, the stress is taking its toll on him. Sometimes he catches a glimpse of shadows moving on its own or hears a distant murmur like he did after he nearly drowned. Maybe everything didn’t go away just because he ignored them. Maybe they are all coming back to him.
He doesn’t believe in ghosts or anything supernatural and actively opposes any notion related to it.
Is deadly afraid of deep water, especially when he can imagine himself drowning in a body of water.
FAMILY: Nathan Miles (father) Ingrid Cavanaugh (mother) Oliver Miles-Iglesias (son) Regina Iglesias (ex-wife) Grant Cavanaugh (cousin)
CONNECTIONS:
Regina Iglesias (ex-wife): “Have history” is a horrible understatement of relationship between Mike and Regina. They have been waging war against each other after divorce, only keeping the bare minimum courtesy in front of their son. Whether or not Mike has gotten over her, however, is up to debate.
Grant Cavanaugh (cousin/best friend): Grant has always been his best friend. They grew up together, went through the rough patch of their live as family. There is nothing Mike wouldn’t do for his cousin.
Wil McKay (partner): McKay and him function in peculiar partnership. They never agree on one thing. He considers her to be too strict while she calls him undisciplined. Yet they have each other’s back without doubt and fight crimes together.
PERSONALITY
Outspoken and expressive, Mike is what they call an open book. It’s usually not that difficult to guess what is going on inside his head. The main reason why is that Mike likes simplicity and has no patience for complication. He sees no point in pretense or beating around the bush. The easiest way to talk to him is to go straight to the business. You are less likely to see him frustrated, huffing and stomping around. Obviously the man has a temper that is quick to boil up. He cares aggressively for those who are close to him and doggedly dedicates himself to his job and family. He is quite candid about it, too, not hesitating to admit that he cares. He just has a crude way of expressing it. His honesty and openness hurt him before, but he is resilient. He knows that he can recover from it. When it comes to issues he doesn’t want to deal with, however, he shows purposeful apathy. He locks them up and rejects them altogether. This is his defense mechanism, ignoring problems until they go away. They don’t go away, though and he knows it all too well. He just doesn’t know any other way.
SKILLS:
Despite becoming a medium in early age, Mike has a very limited spiritual sense. This is because he refuses to believe in anything paranormal and suppresses his own gift. He sees spirits sporadically. Even then he can only see them in vague figures.
Serving in the force for half of his life, he has developed both skills and instinct in investigation. He is apt at spotting anything suspicious and connecting dots. Interrogation is not his best area, however, and he usually ends up playing the bad cop.
He is proficient with firearms and has a sharp aim. He is also persistent and can take a beating, never goes down without a fight.
