Lan Zhan is already in his pajamas, but he sets aside his book and swings into action. He knows from experience that “incoming” means Wei Ying’s rideshare has turned onto his street, which also means he has exactly the right amount of time to put the kettle on and steam one of the sweet red bean paste buns he keeps in his freezer for times such as this. By the time the knock on his door happens, Wei Ying’s guest slippers are waiting for him neatly in the entryway, and Lan Zhan has the steamed bun and a mug of the horrible cinnamon ginger herbal tea Wei Ying likes waiting on the coffee table closest to the side of the couch with the taco-shaped throw pillow that Wei Ying bought him as a joke and now ends up absentmindedly cuddling every time he comes over.
(Lan Zhan has his Wei Ying surprise evening visit preparations down to a science at this point. He is aware that this is not the way most people treat their friends, even their best friends, and actively chooses not to care.)

“Well, he has a point,” Wei Ying says seriously. “Nie Mingjue is a catch.”
“As ge makes clear to me at every opportunity,” Lan Zhan says in the long-suffering deadpan that he’s learned Wei Ying finds amusing. Wei Ying laughs again, the sound bright and too-short, causing a flare of satisfaction deep in Lan Zhan’s chest that mellows back into gentle concern. “Are they… disappointed?” he asks carefully, deciding to risk a more direct question in the wake of the laughter.
“They’re sure not appointed,” Wei Ying grumbles in something close to his usual sense of humor. He frowns. “Hey, can you be appointed?”
Lan Zhan considers that. “One can be appointed to a position.”
Wei Ying nods. “Yeah, okay, so being disappointed is the feeling of bummerhood that comes when you don’t get appointed to the position you want?”
“That makes a certain amount of etymological sense,” Lan Zhan allows. He pauses there and fixes Wei Ying with a flat look. It’s time to be blunt. “You are avoiding the question.”
“I was going on a fun verbal tangent, something you normally love to join me on,” Wei Ying insists, looking extremely put-upon. He sets his mug aside and picks up the taco pillow, scowling at the embroidered smiling face. “Everyone’s ganging up on me tonight but you, El Taco.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”
“I dunno,” Wei Ying says, offering up a smile that’s small but genuine. “Can you rewire my brain so I don’t panic when people want to kiss me?”
“I do not believe so,” Lan Zhan says with exaggerated mournfulness. (Most people would not be able to tell he was doing so, but most people are not Wei Ying.) It would normally get him a laugh, or a snort, or his favorite, a snort laugh, but Wei Ying doesn’t respond. He just sits there and stares at Lan Zhan like he’s doing extremely complicated math in his head and choreographing a nine-person dance number at the same time.
“Lan Zhan,” he starts, a light sparking in his eyes and his voice coming out rushed, “Lan Zhan, could you—would you be okay with—”
“Breathe,” Lan Zhan orders gently, squeezing Wei Ying’s hand again.
Wei Ying rolls his eyes but obeys, inhaling deeply and re-centering himself before he looks Lan Zhan full in the face, shoulders square and chin up. “Will you kiss me?” he asks, like that’s a reasonable thing to ask and not the culmination of over a decade of Lan Zhan’s specific, secret, fervent dreams.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh thank you! For asking!
I don't think I'll ever finish this one but I'm in love with the concept. I wanted to write wangxian with either WWX or LWJ deaged, but I wanted all the angst. And I think that WWX is such that if you just de-age him into a kid post canon, you just get this happy go-lucky kid who seems like nothing's wrong. And he might say things that would hint at there being some very wrong things (either about living in the streets or about the Jiang household, depending on the age you pick), but I just feel he would not engage on that? Like maybe LWJ would be pretty sad about it, but WY would shrug and want to play. Meanwhile, post-canon de-aged!LWJ would be a very sad kiddo, but I don't think adult!WWX would engage with that either. He'd just spend all his time trying to get little LZ to crack a smile and avoid talking about any of the things that he knows are sad about LWJ's childhood until LWJ gets aged up again.
But if LWJ were to go into the past, into WWX's childhood, and actually be there witnessing Wei Ying on the streets or Madam Yu's treatment of him, we'd see a lot more because LWJ would be so protective and defensive and angry in a way he would not need to be if de-aged!WWX was happening in the present post-canon. Likewise, I think WWX would feel both furious and helpless at the way little Lan Zhan's feelings get shut up and repressed if he was at Cloud Recesses in the time when LWJ was actually a child, in a way WWX wouldn't be if LWJ was de-aged in the present post-canon. Basically, if either of them is de-aged post-canon, they get to be in the protecting and loving environment the other would create for them, when what's sad about their childhoods is the difficult environments they each had.
But I really didn't want to do time travel, because things changing in the past changes the present, and that wasn't what I was interested in. I just wanted them to be able to witness each other's childhoods.
So, post-canon, they encounter some kind of demon that seems to have trapped WWX in his own mind, but LWJ can enter his mind to save him. This puts LWJ in WWX's memories of childhood and witnesses WWX in the streets, WWX running from dogs, WWX getting found by JFM, etc. At first, LWJ thinks he can only passively watch the memories, but kid!Wei Ying inside the memories notices him, and LWJ realizes that he can talk to Wei Ying and interact with Wei Ying. He can thus change the memories--to an extent. No one else in the memories can see him or interact with him, because the living WWX exists in these memories but the other people are static memories in WWX's head. So, for instance, LWJ can pick up Wei Ying and take him away from the dogs, but the dogs don't react as though LWJ is there at all. LWJ can stand up to Madam Yu and say that she's treating Wei Ying unfairly, but Madam Yu can't hear him.
But Wei Ying can, and Wei Ying isn't aware he's inside his memories. To him, LWJ is this magical cloud prince who just shows up sometimes and is very pretty and nice and kind to him. They progress linearly through the memories until 15yo!WWX meets 15yo!LWJ, then WWX realizes who the magical cloud prince is and begins to figure out that he's somehow trapped.
But wait! In fact, WWX was never the one trapped in his own mind by a demon, it's been LWJ all along, except LWJ wouldn't let WWX inside his memories to help him out of the curse, so WWX opened up his own memories to let LWJ travel through then, thinking along the terms of "I showed you mine; now you show me yours." It works, and WWX is finally able to travel though LWJ's memories in the same way as LWJ traveled through his, and then they break the curse.
It's from WWX's pov but starts in Wei Ying's pov when he's 6 or 7 (which is suuuuuuuuper difficult to write btw) and he just sees this pretty gege appearing at random times and calls LWJ in his head "man from cloud."
I didn't write much. Sadly, as much as I love the idea, I don't see myself continuing it. I love the idea more than the idea of executing it! Thank you for asking! <3

I kept thinking on how HoG au could happen.
1. LZ must arrived to burial mounds and convinced WY to surrender in the time between when the siege start and the time when all preparation are made to storm it.
Because 1. All the cultivators are still afraid of the Yiling Laozu. They saw first hand on how he fought at the sun shot campaign. So having him surrender by the Hanguang Jun is a better option.
2. They have no way of knowing if or when WWX die, he would come back as a bigger problem. A calamity for example.
3. Gusu is a place where the resentment energy is the lowest, thus, also the place WWX would be the weakest.
4. People like JGS would still be very interested in WWX invention and power. So keeping him alive yet trap and under watch is a tempting offer. For if they find a way to safely command him. Or if their research into his works blew up in their face. Plus a scapegoat.
5. Everyone (except some who will not speak) think LZ hate WWX and his method. So they would think no one would be a better warden then LZ for WWX as a prisoner.
In HoG universe, Lan Wangji confessed his feelings to Wei Wuxian in the cave where he tried to heal him, confronted the 33 elders, brought Wei Wuxian back to the Burial Mounds and returned to receive his punishment which made him stay in his Jingshi due to all of the wounds.
I believe he didn't know that the siege is planned (because in the novel he gets the news that Wei Wuxian died and it's shocking to him. I believe if he knew he would head there right away with all injuries)
But in HoG Lan Wangji gets to know about the planned siege and storms there immediately. When he arrives he sees Wei Wuxian already kneeling in surrender, because he realized that if he goes on to fight he will probably lose and the Wens he protects will suffer a horrible fate. He is ready to surrender and be taken by whichever sect wants to have him, but at that moment Lan Wangji arrives, gets near him and begs him again to come to Gusu with him, gaining the courage to confess to him once again.
Wei Wuxian thinks that this is some kind of a cruel joke, because Lan Wangji never liked him, and he thinks that this is Lan Wangji's way to lure him to Gusu to be cleansed, indoctrinated and punished, just like he always thought would happen when Lan Wangji asked him to come to Gusu with him. (It was always Lan Wangji coming to Wei Wuxian with the "your methods harm the body and the mind/soul" crap (from WWX's POV) and then asking of him to come to Gusu, so Wei Wuxian was always sure that Lan Wangji wants to punish him or fix him at most, knowing it futile since he can't the normal "right" cultivation without having a core. He declined the offer again and again.)
But this time when he already realizes that the sects are willing to spare the Wens if he surrenders and comes with them, Wei Wuxian listens to Lan Wangji and decides that to go with him would be his best bet. He'd rather stay with Lan Wangji, whom he believes to be just and fair, rather than be with the other sects who are driven by hate and revenge (like Jiang Cheng), opportunism (like Jin Guangshan) or a strict sense of justice (like Nie Mingjue).
Lan Wangji, like his father, takes Wei Wuxian and declares that he will bring him to Gusu and marry him so that he will always be under his watch. What he means by that is that Wei Wuxian will always be under his protection, but what Wei Wuxian and the sects think of that is that Lan Wangji is willing to sacrifice himself (meaning not to be married to any woman in his life, which is a big deal especially for a man of a high status like himself) and seal his fate to Wei Wuxian's just so that he can watch him, control him, and keep him from causing harm to the people and being a threat to the cultivation sects by encouraging simple people to cultivate in his method instead of relying on the sects for protection.
They agree to Lan Wangji's declaration, as much as Lan Qiren tried to oppose it, but Lan Xichen, knowing his brother's true intentions, stopped his uncle from objecting. They demand that Lan Wangji will make sure that Wei Wuxian is locked in one place. They confiscated all of his weapons, and made Lan Wangji swear to them that he will have no access to anything that he can use to create dark magic. At the same time of course they took all of his writings, saying that they are dangerous and that they will get rid of them but in truth keeping them to learn from Wei Wuxian's methods themselves. Wei Wuxian asked Lan Wangji to ensure with the sects that the Wens stay safe, but the most he could do was to have their promise to keep them safe in a camp, but under the watch of cultivators from all sects. They are being kept alive but nothing more than that.
Anyways Wei Wuxian goes back to Gusu with Lan Wangji and the Lans, they make a simple wedding rite just for the practical side of it, and Wei Wuxian is put in the house where Lan Wangji's mother was held for almost the same reasons.
I'm sure that I will understand my own story better as it goes, so I might not have all answers now hahaha

How, how is your wife?" and jzx is just, not horrified, he'd known how badly the jiangs had imploded but he hadn't known you know? And he's like 'call her Yanli, at least for now. And yes, it's Jin privately but she keeps Jiang professionally' (idk if they do that in china?! but for now at least they do) and wwx is nodding and nodding and then wen ning opens the door "can i get you tea? coffee? boss?" and wwx is like "coffee please, a ning. Jin Zixuan, I'll be five minutes, you can tell A ning what you'd like to drink." and darts from the room, running into the loos and having a controlled 3 min breakdown, washing her face, reaplying her makeup and returning to her office, controlled, in charge, The Boss ™️

I don't understand why so many of mdzs fans hate jiang cheng .They are looking at wwx & lwj pov side and why can't they look at jc story from his side as well.
Madam yu was a bad mother but a great leader. She was blinded by hatred. And fengmian can't be called a good person too. He mistreated his own son because he looked like his mother . Jc was a child , all jc wanted loving parents . But madam yu doesn't know how to show love or affection & fengmian knew how to do it, but he didn't even care about it. The only good thing fengmian did was adopt wy & the only good thing madam yu did was care about jc somehow .I will never forget this, which is that fengmian picked jc less than 5 times (according to him) but each time was enough to keep him happy for months .He didn't like jc because he was like madam yu and he never saw how hard jc worked to please him and get his attention. Madam yu used this as a weapon . They were passing jc between the two of them like he was just a toy, and they didn't know how much damage it had done to the boy since he was a child. Can you imagine how depressed he was since childhood? Jyl was the only one who gave him a little relief, but don't forget that after wy came to lotus peir , he got the full attention of not only his father but also his sister. He was so alone but still loved & cared wy. How is it when not only parents but others compare him with wy and always say that you can't do this and that? He was a little boy then , Because of his family & others his insecurity about himself and the feeling that no one likes him increased.
He was not 16-17 years old when the collapsed clan was handed over to him. The entire clan has been destroyed, there are about 50-100 people. Even his parents were killed and he could not find his brother. Also, he lost his golden core when he went to protect wy. Don't forget that time wen chao captured him and tortured him, beating him with discipline whips after removing his golden core. And he had to see his people killed in front of his eyes and had to see his whole clan burn to ashes . And that time how many people tried to take his place because he was young and had no one to help him? No one can imagine his mental state at that time. But, he endured all of them and rebuilt the clan from scratch.
After wy came back, others blamed jc for all of wy's mistakes. Jc is angry because wy didn't choose him. At a time when his clan is still being built, jc can't choose both his brother and the members of the wen clan. That's why he told his brother to come to him, because he will protect his brother no matter what anyone says. Yiling belonged to yunmenng and who protected them during those three years? And he wasn't there at JZ's death, so he believed the rumours. And think about it, he is a brother as well as a clan leader. If he makes a small mistake, it will go outside his clan. And if he doesn't go with wy's seige, what will happen to his rebuilding clan? His sister died in front of his eyes and went to protect wy. Not only that ,in front of his eyes wy divested his qi.(I am talking about the mdzs plot because the plot of cql/tu has been completely changed) He loved his brother & sister more than his parents. Because Yanali and Xian were like his parents since childhood.
Who can bear that pain within three years he lost his entire family. In the end, he was left with only that one-month-old child without parents. He didn't kill his brother, but everyone said he did. How does he feel the pain when others says that? God, he is a human too.If he hates wy so much, why did he keep chengquing a secret from everyone for 16 years? And when wy came back he knew it was his brother. If he hates wy so much, he could have told everyone that he is back? And others don't know if it's true or false about jc torturing dark cultivatiors , it's all rumours. Also, even after wy came back, jc was angry because he chose lz instead of jc.
He is sad and angry not because of anything, Because no matter how much he trusts wy, wy doesn't trust him. That's why he says that if wy hid the fact that he gave the golden core to jc as a secret, he will also keep the loss of his golden core as a secret. He knows that even if his brother comes back, he doesn't want him and that's why he let him go. Jc's sacrifices for everyone, his pains, his everything are hidden from everyone by his outer character.
If we take the story from the beginning to the end, is he not the one who has been alone all the time without anything and bearing all the pain alone? All he wanted was a loving family.
It's so sad that everyone misunderstands him without seeing his story from his side 💔.
Jiang cheng is a person who hide his soft and weak heart by acting strict .

Please share your deranged meta thoughts on chengxian.. please feed me. I am hungry friend.
*cracks knuckles* this is going to end up being a jc apologist post. here we go~
I mean, I know everyone and their uncle has agony feelings about the whole golden core thing. That subplot is the fulcrum on which the Yunmeng Shuangjie turns, from JC getting caught by the Wens (losing his core) to keep WWX safe to WWX giving JC his own core to the postwar reveal at Lotus Pier. And I know it inspires complex emotions in people. And I know people have wildly differing opinions on JC as a person and how his actions reflect on the sort of guy he is, and whether or not he's a good person.
I don't particularly care about a character's morality, so I'm discarding the question of good and evil when it comes to chengxian.
BUT what I do really like is the application of the wangxian "between two people who love each other, there is no need for apologies or thank yous" thing. Because even more than wangxian, that's the sort of ideology that might benefit chengxian. There is just too much to apologize for between the two of them.
Because if you're WWX, what could you even apologize for? For saving your little brother's ability to cultivate when he needed to be sect leader, when he had nothing else in the world that might keep him alive, when you knew it was something you could work around?
You could argue it was the height of thoughtless selfishness that he made that decision for JC and lied to him about it, and maybe you'd be right, but if you were WWX you wouldn't apologize for it either. You might apologize for things that weren't really your fault--the burning of Lotus Pier, for example. Or the death of Jiang Yanli. Apologize for taking up the heretical arts? How could you, when it won the war, saved innocents, and got you your revenge?
And what could JC apologize for? Cruelty? Anger? Careless sacrifice? How could he apologize for any of those things when he just watched his parents be killed and his home burned to the ground in front of his eyes, when he watched his older brother devolve into madness and kill their older sister, whom they both loved and was their only family left in the world? How could he apologize for sacrificing for WWX when WWX could and did do the same?
In the realm of gratitude--there is precious little to be grateful for between the two of them, and simultaneously too much for words. How do you thank someone for giving you your life back at the cost of their sanity, at their chance at immortality, at everything that had made them respected and feared and loved? The question goes for either of them, as WWX and JC made the exact same sacrifice within weeks of each other.
What makes these two fun is that they're unspeakably, bitterly cruel to each other, and so horrendously selfish. I feel that because WWX is the POV character and JC occupies an antagonistic role, you don't get to see this as much in the books. JC's cruelty is loud and obvious and it's so easy to look at him and hate him for it, this powerful man who has thrived because the protagonist sacrificed for him and yet insists on anger and violence and assuming the worst of everyone.
But it's an equally cruel thing to take away a person's autonomy and choice because you think you know what's best for them. It's equally cruel to spiral so far into your own arrogance, your own apathy, that you fail to notice the tides of politics around you shifting. WWX did his best with incredibly limited choices--that's why we love him. But JC's hands were tied as much as his older brother's, if not moreso.
And the most beautiful thing about chengxian, I think, is that they both make crippling mistakes because they are each other's blind spot for so much of the novel. Even before LZ was WWX's everything, it'a JC that WWX trusts above all else--this is clear during the Sunshot campaign and even after. And JC obviously trusts him--he has since childhood, since WWX promised to support him (and isn't that delicious, the broken promises and shattered dreams of the youth?).
Which obviously makes it so fucking painful when JC sees what WWX has wrought pre-siege of the Burial Mounds and goes understandably apeshit.
It also matters how JC shows that, even thirteen years after, he still trusts WWX. He still believes in WWX, and, dare I say it, holds onto the childish belief that his untouchable older brother can carry the day. It's why the scene in Guanyin Temple where JC throws Chenqing to WWX is so goddamn powerful. He brought that flute knowing WWX was the only one who could use it, that WWX might need it, and when they're down to the wire with no options left, JC believes in WWX.
Plus even in CQL canon, JC and WWX reconcile enough that JC visits Gusu to disturb the peace. Chengxian is all the more fun because it's about the power of reconciliation even more than wangxian is, and fundamentally, about forgiveness and the acceptance of the other person's flawed humanity. Which is, in the end, what makes it so compelling.

The one time Lan Wangji went on a date, his date had said at the end of the night he would have had more fun with a frozen cod. He's just not a people person.

Lan Wangji thinks about wearing Wei Wuxian's scrunchie around his wrist for a moment, deep red and obvious. Then he rolls over and angrily drives his fist into the pillows. He takes a deep breath and tries to center himself, but the scrunchie haunts him. Not the thought of it specifically, but of being the one trusted to hold it. It's a ridiculous thought, useless; Wei Wuxian doesn't even care about his scrunchies. He loses them everywhere. If he gave one to Lan Wangji it would be because he wouldn't care if he walked away with it.
But he still thinks about holding it for him, about handing it back when Wei Wuxian's done dancing and watching him put his hair back up. He thinks about tucking a lose strand of hair in between Wei Wuxian's ear and then, then…
I've met frozen cods with more personality than you.
Then he'd step away and probably bow, because he's that awkward, and Wei Wuxian would turn to whatever new friends he'd made to laugh about his ridiculous acquaintance. No, it's definitely better that he didn't go.

Ok, so it's a modern world with cultivation fic, and in it the 5 Great Sects are like big crime syndicates or something similar. 9. Fic finder request: there's a fic I only recall some details of. In this fic, dual cultivation in the Cold Pond Cave contributes to the security of the Cloud Recesses, but it has to be done by powerful cultivators with a member of the main family. MY and LXC are married in this fic, but they are unable to use this method of boosting security because MY's cultivation level is not high enough. Wangxian do it eventually, and when they leave the Cold Pond Cave, they are congratulated (?) by the Lans, who were waiting outside. WWX is also welcomed into the sect as one of their own. 11. Looking for a longfic I read a while back. The elements I remember are that the Lan figured out that WWX wasn't being properly compensated/treated as a head disciple of the Jiang and the deliberate stunting of his academic education was a violation of (handwavy) Jianghu high academia codes of conduct. As a result the Lan got WWX his backpay and the Jiang teachers got shunned by their academic peers. Had similar vibes to Stunted, Starving Juvenility, but I did a reread of that recently and I'm pretty sure it was a different fic. Thanks! @alychelms

I don't like to put bad comments in fics, but I read one where LZ was depressed after Wei ying death, but he was alive, but come from a coma.
I like it, but the distance as always is WWX's faults, I understand is LZ PoV, but sometimes I wish he has WQ or JYL by his side and LXC don't blame him freely. I pass for something like LZ on the fic, I was depressed and live with anxiety, and sadly we can hurt people we love, but why is always WWX who needs to apologize? The man just come from a coma and live in a world where they live without him for years, Lan Zhan dont talk to him, he assumes the worst and leaves, and he is guilty and nobody stops Lan Xichen for being mean to him, he never apologizes and everything is ok. I just want to read a Lan Zhan post 13 ywars attitude to Wei Ying, that Lan Zhan is different, he look for Wei ying, he make him know he stay by his side in the worst the misscomunication come for feelings and their relatinships, but at that point Wei Ying dont doubt about being alone, about his place in the world. Sadly a lot of fics have Wangxian with the dynamic pre 13 years and even if I love Lan zhan, that's different, he put and stayed with Wei Ying at the end of his first life. I love Lan Zhan in the Lotus Pound scene, he knows that "maybe next time" may never come. He knows the moment is now. He doesn't want to trap Wei Ying, but he stays by his side even if is just a friend, he comes for him to Guabyin Temple, even if they've miscommunicated before.
As someone who doesn't accept shit for her family, understands Wei Yin doesn't need to go back to a place if he doesn't feel well, in modern Au everyone blames him for leaving but nobody apologizes? Wei Ying must go and live with the Wens and raise A-Yuan with his original family have a farm be happy and stop begging for love.
