Photo of the Day: Nachi
Nachi is the highest waterfall in Japan. It is also an object of worship on the Kumano Kodo. It is located in Wakayama Prefecture along with the other 2 shrines, Hongu Taisha, and Hayatama Taisha.  This is actually not Nachi Taisha, but a sub-shrine. Nachi no Ogi Matsuri(那智の扇祭り)Higashimuro County, Wakayama Prefecture
{Nachi no Ogi Matsuri is the grand annual festival of Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine.
When Emperor Jimmu (the founding emperor of Japan, and the patriarch of its royal lineage) entered into the land of Kumano, he discovered Nachi Falls and decided to enshrine the waterfall itself as a deity. Later, in the 5th year of Nintoku Emperor's reign (317 AD), a shrine pavilion was erected and deities were welcomed in. This founded the present day Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine, while Nachi Falls became a separate Hiro Shrine. The 133m tall waterfall of Nachi is registered as one of the 100 best waterfalls of Japan, as well as a UNESCO world heritage site, while being a rare shrine with a waterfall as its deity.
The Ogi Matsuri is a sacred rite where deities enshrined at Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine ride on 12 portable "Ogi mikoshi" shrines to make a return visit to Nachi Falls where they used to be enshrined. Shrine parishioners dressed in white fearlessly walk the shrine's stone steps carrying flaming torches weighing approximately 50 kg. Many sightseers come from all across the country to witness this stately festival.

KUMANO Day1
Tumblr media
🚍 Nachi taisha - Seigantoji - Nachi falls - Hayatama taisha
i have felt gloomy for past few weeks because my condition was not good with chronic pain. i wanted to change my feeling…and i came up with an idea to walk the kumano kodo.
during my first camino, i heared from some pilgrims "you'll be a dual pilgrim if you walk both camino & kumano" . i thought it would be nice experience to refresh my mind. the conditions of my foot & leg are not so bad, so i thought i could walk easy way of kumano kodo.
i chose the easiest way "walk 7km from hossinmon oji to hongu taisha + visit nachi-taisha & hayatama-taisha (you can use bus to visit these two shrines) "
my first day of kumano, i started from kii-katsuura. i took a bus to nachiyama (mt.nachi) and visited nachi-taisha~seigantoji~nachi falls (hirou-jinjya) and then, i visited hayatama-taisha by bus. going up and down stairs of shrine was a little bit difficult for me (because of joit pain), but it was so nice for me to walk in nature.
this night, i stayed the guest house at yunomine-onsen. i soaked in a hot spring and felt so nice that both of body & mental were relaxed.

Welcome to Wakayama. Today we are going for a roadtrip!
We started from Susami a cute little Town and we will go to the Nachi Falls!
Our first stop is the Book & Turkish Bazaar in Kushimoto to get a coffee.
This place has some history as a turkish ship the "ottoman frigate", sunk here, in 1890.
And after that we drive just 5 more minutes to reach the Hashiguiiwa Rocks. A beautiful and amazing rock formation.
This mysterious, natural work of art, featuring a straight line of large and small unusually shaped rocks which stretches for around 850 meters, appears to be the stakes of a bridge.
The fantastic scenery colored by the sunrise is especially popular as a photo-taking spot.
One legend says that the monk Kobo Daishi attempted to build a bridge here.
After driving for another hour it is lunch time and we stop at the fishmarket It is also an Onsen area with free footbaths here.
Katsuura Gyoko Nigiwai-Ichiba.
Unfortunately the place we came here for is closed today.
But there are many other restaurants here.
Full of energy we get back on the road.
Going for the main attraction of today Kumano Nachi Taisha grand shrine, Nachisan Seigantoji Temple a world heritage and Hitaki shrine / Nachi Falls.
After parking at the entrance of the mountain we start to walk up the endless stairs. And on the way we find a few cute stores.
The sky is beautiful today and I went for a peek down. You can already see nachi falls from here.
Then we arrive at the entrance of the Kumano Nachi Taisha grand shrine.
This large Camphor tree has a hollowed out trunk and is estimated to be 850 years old.
If you walk through with a gomagi or an ema it is said to clean you.
Right next to it is the Nachisan Seigantoji Temple a world heritage.
The Architecture is amazing and its centuries old.
The famous 3 storied pagoda that you can see next to Nachi Falls is part of this Temple.
From here on we walk towards the Nachi falls and you can see it come closer and closer.
The waterfall has an amazing uninterupted drop of 133 meters and is with that the highest uninterupted waterfall in all of Japan!
At the foot of the waterfall is the Hitaki shrine.
But to get there we need to go down the hill on this Ghibli path the Nature is amazing and the air is really fresh.
There is a photographer here and you can buy a professional photo. You can also pay a small entrance fee to get even closer.
Inside you can find lucky charms and these cool charms that show a text after you lay it on the water.
This is the closest spot to the waterfall the energy is amazing!

kumano kodo & kumano sanzan
november 23-26, 2022
>> see kumano sanzan photos << >> see kumano kodo posts << >> see all kumano posts <<
i completed the kumano kodo pilgrimage!
there are a few ways pilgrims can complete the pilgrimage. i chose visiting the kumano sanzan + walking from hosshinmon-oji to kumano hongu taisha. i’m not much of a hiker, so i figured this route is the most popular and a length that i can probably handle.
the first day was my date of arrival, so i dropped off my luggage and went to kumano hayatama taisha. i stayed in shingu, so it was just a short walk away. all of the kumano sanzan (the three holy sites of kumano) are dedicated to worshipping nature. hayatama is at the mouth of the kumano river and backed by the kii mountains, so nature is a very important aspect of worship at hayatama. i was able to receive my first kumano stamp and my goshuin there.
the second day i visited kumano nachi taisha, seianto-ji, hiro jinja, and nachi-no-taki. i was aware that it was located on a mountain and that a lot of climbing would be required, but my fitbit said i climbed 30 floors x__x like hayatama, nachi is dedicated to worshipping nature -- specifically the waterfall called nachi-no-taki. it is the highest waterfall in all of japan at 133 meters. seeing it in person was very awe-inspiring. i received my nachi and seianto-ji stamps for my kumano stamp book as well as goshuin from nachi, seianto-ji, and hiro.
the third day i walked the trail, starting off at hosshinmon-oji. oji are like mini shrines or subsidiaries of the main kumano shrines. hosshinmon-oji marks the outermost boundary of hongu’s precincts. hosshinmon-oji is one of the most important points of the kumano kodo and it means ‘gate to spiritual awakening and aspiration to enlightenment.’
next stopping point was mizunomi-oji. it’s a shrine with a water source. with the fall leaves being so colorful, it made for some nice photos. on the way to the next spot is a statue called domyuzenmon, erected in ancient times by nearby villagers to commemorate a monk in training who died just 100m from the next village. back in the day many people died trying to complete this pilgrimage.
next stop os fushiogami-oji. the name means to kneel and worship. going up a little lookout point, pilgrims would get their first glimpse of their final destination from here, and many fell down and prayed. apparently a famous female poet started to menstruate here. often people who were menstruating were not allowed because purity and whatnot but one of the kumano gods approached her and told her even gods suffer from impurities, so she was able to continue her pilgrimage. a bit further down is a gate i passed through that apparently served as a checkpoint. around this area is a scenic lookout of oyunohara, which is the site of the original hongu shrine and at which point now stands a giant torii gate.
next point was haraido-oji, where pilgrims purified themselves to prepare to enter the shrine.
finally we reached kumano hongu taisha from the back and collected the final stamp in the kumano kodo stamp book. kumano hongu taisha is the final of the kumano sanzan (three holy sites). after hongu i went on to oyunohara, where the shrine originally stood for 2000 years.
i met an old japanese man and his wife on the bus so i ended up walking with them. they were pretty nice to me considering how slow i was  but im very grateful to them for walking with me. also met some americans! one girl has done both kumano kodo and santiago de compostela so she got a special ceremony.
this trip was basically two years in the making because of covid, and it’s something i thought would be a big challenge. i was right, it WAS very challenging. i’m pretty proud of myself for completing it!
