3rd's POV
Yurim watched as Heedo argued with Yijin trying to make him let them drink but he was adamant to wait. It was funny from Yurim's perspective on the floor.
"I can't have you all get drunk, at least not now. Someone's coming" Yurim immediately pulled herself up into the sitting position "Who is coming?" She asked surprised, she wasn't sure who Yijin would invite so casually over. Because of his past he didn't had that many people who he met often so inviting someone was even more unusual in her opinion.
Before he could answer her a knocking on the door could be heard in the apartment. As he went to open the door a group gathered together whispered behind his back all different possibilities about who it was but when Yurim heard a voice, she immediately recognized it. A big smiled appeared on her face as she watched you walk inside with Yijin following right behind you.
You smiled at Yurim but before Yijin could introduce you properly Heedo spoke up first "You have a girlfriend?!" She was so loud that it scared Yurim for a second but then she processed her friend's words and looked at her with a shocked face "A pretty girlfriend too" She turned her gaze to Jiwoong who looked between you and Yijin accusingly. You looked quite shocked at what you were hearing which wasn't surprising while Yijin also looked not too pleased with the accusations like that. You both also looked disgusted as you looked at each other making gaging noises.
"The hell? No!" Yijin yelled out while you looked at Yurim with a what the fuck face "That's my sister you idiots" He said slapping the backs of their heads, even Seungwan who was quiet the whole time "Yah, what was that for? I wasn't saying anything" She complained "Knowing that you all share a brain you probably thought it too" He sat down all angry. All of them just kept looking at him as he complained under his nose. While everyone was not looking you made your way to Yurim who pulled you to herself, her arms wrapped tightly around you as she held you.
She looked visibly displeased with the situation so to take her frown away you pulled her by her shirt lower and connected your lips in a sweet kiss that she immediately reciprocated. She got so lost on your lips that she couldn't notice anything other than you so you both got quite startled at the sudden outburst of your friends while Yijin just watched everything unfold while sipping on his beer, already too tired with everyone.
Well now at least everyone knew that you were Yurim's only, even if it came with a noise complaint because of certain 3 people.

happy happy happy birthday to the one and only, incredibly talented kim jiyeon!!! i can't believe she's 28 - she's so good at playing high schoolers, like she's 28 and playing her pyramid game character and she played yurim at 26?!
Tumblr media
bona, i hope you have the best birthday! you are so talented and such a source of light, laughter, and happiness for the fans! you are so caring to the girls, even if you tease them, you go all out for them.
Tumblr media
you're also so ridiculously talented - lead dancer, sub vocalist, sub rapper, and a successful actress on top of that! i hope that the industry stops sleeping on your talent one day!
Tumblr media
i'm never going to be satisfied with this post as you mean more than what words can articulate, but happy birthday bona, we all love you so much! and are looking forward to pyramid game!!

There’s something so poetic about Heedo and Yurim’s relationship.
You can’t deny it whether you ship them romantically or not (I mean I certainly do, but that’s not the point). Think about it. Heedo’s main motivation to improve her fencing skills is to become Yurim’s rival, who she unknowingly beat all those years ago and was, in a way, one of Yurim’s motivations to become so good at fencing in the first place. Heedo knew Yurim’s moves inside and out after studying her matches for so long because she looked up to her. They were online pen pals without knowing each other’s true identity, always supporting each other unconditionally even when they loathed each other in real life. Their bond as online friends was so strong Yurim was convinced they’d recognise each other upon first sight (and the irony of her being the one to spot Heedo first and run away in fear). Both of them knew what it is like to have the entire nation turn against you for something you can’t control (when Heedo won a gold on a supposed ‘bad call’ and when Yurim changed her nationality and left Team Korea). The fact that when Yurim was being harassed by reporters at school after the news of her leaving is released, she called Heedo. Not Jiwoong, her actual boyfriend who she’s been dating for some time. No, she calls Heedo for help, and it is Heedo that hatches an overly convoluted plan to help Yurim escape the press.
Both of them suffered immense pressure to perform for their respective teams after Yurim left, acutely aware of how lonely it is at the top. Yurim ghosted Heedo’s emails and pulling away because the pressure gets to her first, because she feels like she can’t be open with Heedo any more, and Heedo refuses to see Yurim when the opportunity to meet up before the Madrid match arises, because the pressure’s getting to her head, too. Both of their words being cruelly twisted by the media in the lead up to this match to fuel a petty and twisted rivalry that they had both left behind at that point in the story. The Madrid match itself, where both of their emotions were running so high you could feel it in every footstep and every scream, because they both wanted to win so desperately, because they’ve both shed blood sweat and tears to get this far, because they both know what this match means to the other person too. And if you look at the way they score - almost always, it’s one point after the other, or simultaneous touches after simultaneous touches. They’re always neck and neck. They’re equals in every way; they are rivals to the end and there is no question about it. You can see the pressure getting to them, how riled up Heedo gets - she even disagrees with the referee at one point where Yurim is awarded the touch, the first time Heedo is ever shown to do this on screen, if I remember correctly. It’s an interesting callback to Yurim’s protests during their match in the Asian Games; everything is coming full circle, and yet everything has changed at the same time.
Then, there’s the aftermath of the Madrid match. Heedo is awarded the winning point. She’s won the gold, she’s ‘avenged’ South Korea by beating Yurim, the ‘traitor to the nation’. And yet - when she takes off her mask, she’s crying, and it’s so clear that it’s not just tears of joy. Everything comes to the surface in that moment; all the grief and sadness they’ve endured to get to this point and all the happy moments they’ve shared. Heedo’s thinking of it all, and in that moment, she is completely and utterly overcome. Yurim’s reaction follows, perfectly mirroring Heedo’s. When they hug instead of traditionally saluting each other, I almost cried, it’s just such a powerful moment. ‘Only we know how hard it was for us.’ And it’s true - only they know what the other has gone through. And many years later, Yurim is the only one out of their friendship group who shows up at the press conference after Heedo’s final match. And even after a long and fruitful career, Heedo was most honoured to be Yurim’s rival (and equal) above everything else she’s achieved. Three gold medals fencing for Korea, and what shes most honoured and grateful for is to fence alongside and against Yurim. Because for Heedo, everything changed when Yurim won gold for the first time when they were still high schoolers - she was more desperate than ever to get out of her slump just to become a fencer worthy of rivalling Yurim. And on her way up the ranks as a child and teen, before the main events of the show, Yurim always looked to see how she did in tournaments. She scorned Heedo for being reputationless when Heedo joins their high school team, and yet all this time, Ko Yurim never forgot Na Heedo’s name. Their beautiful, poetic relationship truly is the heart and soul of the show.

Heedo: Protecting girlfriend?
Well, I miss Heerim so much. Though my mind has given them a break for a while.
But let’s come to the point.
Just a silly observation of how Heedo subtly takes Yurim into her arms, just to reaffirm her protection in their embrace.
Tumblr media
Just have a look at this gif below.
The way she’s lifted up by Heedo in a subtle way. I can go crazy.
Tumblr media
My observation is supported by the fact that Yurim is smaller than Heedo. Her face would clearly be at the height of Heedo’s neck.
Tumblr media
Note how Heedo’s knees are slightly bent. This is to give tiny Yurim enough support. You could also argue that this is just the angle of the shot and the way the team responsible likes to make Yurim look almost as tall as Heedo, which she clearly isn’t.

Growth and Acceptance with Na-Heedo and Baek Yijin
Tumblr media
Kim Tae-ri and Nam Joo-hyuk as Na-Heedo and Baek Yijin
Released in early 2022 but set in 1998, ‘Twenty-Five Twenty-One’ quickly garnered an emotional audience whose hearts the cast and characters took away with every new episode. It was not only new for the audience to witness a special story like this, but was fairly new to the actors that played Na-Heedo and Baek Yijin as well.
Kim Tae-ri, popularly known for the critically acclaimed film, ‘The Handmaiden', showed a different side of her acting as Na-Heedo, a loud and expressive girl, compared to her past roles which are often associated with serious and sensitive topics. Nam Joo-hyuk, on the other hand, expressed more of his emotional side as he played the troubled adult Baek Yijin, who struggles with worldly affairs from finding a job and reuniting his family due to the effects of the IMF Crisis.

Baek Yijin and Na-Heedo in the early stages of their relationship
GROWTH
If you watch the first three episodes and then skip to the last three, you will immediately notice the significant contrast in how the characters behave with their surroundings and the vast difference in their maturity and priorities.
I tried my best to transfer here, but all of my plans failed. That is why I’ve come to show you my fencing skills. Please watch and decide whether or not you want to train me.
Episode 1 of ‘Twenty-Five Twenty-One’
Na-Heedo is what I’d consider an odd but idealistic character to look up to. It is obvious, if not exaggerated, how much passion Heedo has for her skills in fencing. And without her brazen character and confidence, no one else would have gotten the success she did if put in the exact same steps as the latter gold-medalist champion. While Na-Heedo works her way up to the national finals as a professional fencer, Baek Yijin scores for jobs to survive in the world and eventually lands the working title of a News Caster and Journalist. All throughout, we witness the dynamic duo’s friendship, and later relationship, unfold.
Neither of us is at fault here. And yet we’ve grown this much apart. It just happened. -- I’m not trying to say who is right or wrong. It’s just that…this love isn’t supporting me anymore.
Episode 16 of ‘Twenty-Five Twenty-One’
And finally, the time came. Na-Heedo and Baek Yijin have grown into the individuals they were always meant to become, only with the help of each other’s presence and support. Even with every episode, there were already significant changes and symbols which represented the characters’ growths, some of them being as little as the changes in the way Heedo wears her hair (from a scrunchie always tied halfway at the back of her head to loosely displaying her straight hair) and the way Yijin dresses (from sweaters and jeans to button-down shirts and slacks).
Tumblr media
Na-Heedo and Baek Yijin's final embrace after falling apart in Episode 16
ACCEPTANCE
The main lesson I received from 'Twenty-Five Twenty-One' is that things happen because they’re supposed to. As a part of the audience, if you were asked the question – Would you rather witness the couple grow apart from each other or have them not experience their growth and love at all? –  would you really choose the latter option?
Even if we didn’t know each other, we would still be together like now. Because we have the same destination.
Episode 6 of ‘Twenty-Five Twenty-One’
That line, delivered by Nam Joo-hyuk, struck me and plainly summarizes my point. At some point in time, every one of us and the people we held special in our lives, had the same destination but different endings. Heedo and Yijin both had the same destination of success in their minds, and because of that shared destination, they were able to reach even farther although presently apart.
‘Twenty-Five Twenty-One’ was able to bring us the sad realities of life and romance while keeping the light-hearted and humorous feels of the early 2000s K-Dramas. A must-watch for those who crave love, pain, and truth.

Yurim: *flirts*
Tumblr media
Heedo: *red alert, gay panic*
Tumblr media
There are no plausible heterosexual explanations for the fact that Yurim discreetly flirted with Heedo in a photo booth after escaping the journalists. I’m sorry, but they’re just idiots in love enjoying their last day together.
Ps.: I don’t accept contrary opinions, you’re on my territory.
