４日目。 今日は観光のあと、夜のフライトでバンコクに戻ります。 今日のルートはカンボジア名でプレアヴィヒア（タイ名でカオ・プラ・ウィハーン）→コーケー遺跡群→シェムリアップ空港です。 ということで出発前に宿をチェックアウト。 オールドマーケットにも近いしリーズナブルでいい宿でした。またシェムリアップ来ることあったらここに泊まろう。 8時にプレアヴィヒアへ出発。 プレアヴィヒアは過去にタイ側から何度か来たことがある場所。最後は2007年12月。 忙しいことはいいことだ。 その後、領有権を巡るドンパチで、現在はタイ側からアクセスはできず、カンボジアからのみアクセスできるようです。 政争の具にしなくても   プレアヴィヒアの麓で専用トラックに乗り換え山頂へ（ゴールデンロックみたいだ）。到着する頃にはお昼前。 思ったより時間かかったなーーー。 お昼の日差しは強いうえ、彫刻の陰影も上からに…

Pra Somdej Nua Gra-beuang-gae, Pim Yai, Roon Roi Ha Sip Ha Phee Phra Pathom Chedi. A Buddha amulet carved from yellow-gold color ceramic tile that was once patched on Phra Pathom Chedi Stupa of  Wat Phra Pathom Chedi, Nakhon Pathom Province. Phra Pathom Chedi Stupa

Phra Pathommachedi or Phra Pathom Chedi  is a Buddhist stupa in Thailand. The stupa is located in the Wat Phra Pathommachedi Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan, a temple in the town center of Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand. Phra Pathommachedi is the tallest stupa in the world.The top of its spire reaches 120.45 meters, with the base circumference of 235.50 meters.

The name Phra Pathommachedi means the first holy stupa, given by king Mongkut. Originally the stupa the royal stupa in Northern Thai language. One of the common misunderstandings about this stupa is that Phra Pathommachedi is the oldest and the first stupa in Suvarnabhumi, an ancient name of Southeast Asia. Modern Historians believe that the stupa was one of the principal stupas of ancient Nakhon Pathom, the largest settlement of Dvaravati culture in Nakhon Pathom area together with the nearby Phra Prathon Chedi  during the 6th to the 8th centuries.

Notre objectif pour cette journée était de continuer sur la nationale 24 avant de bifurquer vers la route 221 puis la 2248 afin de visiter le parc national de Phu Chong Na Yoi avant de rejoindre Ubon Ratchathani pour y passer la nuit.

Si l’on ira bien au parc national en question, en voyant un panneau indiquant le fameux temple de Preah Viharn à seulement 10km tout droit au lieu de prendre notre route 2248 sur la gauche, je me disais pourquoi pas aller y faire un tour.

Preah Viharn, ou comment flirter avec le Cambodge

Nous voilà donc à emprunter le prolongement de la petite route n°221 où nous arrivions au sommet de la colline du coin où se trouve perché là à 500m de hauteur le temple de Preah Viharn. Nous ne croisions pratiquement que des Thaïs, souvent en famille et même en mode pique-nique à même le bord du parking.

Sachant que les lieux font partis d’un parc national, l’accès y est donc payant. Normalement de 200 Bahts pour les étrangers + 20 Bahts pour les Thaïs cela aurait donc dû faire 220 Bahts mais comme normalement quand on prouve que l’on est en Thaïlande pour longtemps (en l’occurrence moi je montrais mon permis de conduire Thaï) on peut avoir des ristournes, voire parfois le même tarif que les Thaïs (même si plus rare, surtout en Issan…) on a payé finalement que 150 Bahts.

Si le temple reste inaccessible au public (en raison du récent conflit opposant la Thaïlande au Cambodge, j’y reviendrais plus bas dans l’article) la colline de Pha Mo I Daeng, dont le nom est relativement intraduisible en dehors de Pha qui signifie falaise et Daeng qui veut dire rouge, est donc la principale attraction locale, en plus de pouvoir apercevoir le temple.

Normalement si la frontière est ouverte, il faut s’acquitter d’une mini taxe pour faire le saut au Cambodge (sans visa) puis également 200 bahts pour visiter le temple lui-même. Sachant que pour l’instant même si les lieux sont calmes il n’y avait aucun signe d’une réouverture prochaine.

Plateau de Pha Mo I Daeng

Du haut de ce plateau rocheux, cela donne un super point de vue sur la plaine du Cambodge faisant face, plaine par ailleurs relativement sauvage puisqu’on y voit seulement une petite route passant en contrebas mais autrement composée que d’une énorme forêt à perte de vue.

En remontant la colline en direction du temple, il est possible de voir des figures sculptés à même la roche légèrement en contrebas de la colline. Découverte sur le tard en 1987 lors d’une patrouille de ranger Thaï (des unités paramilitaires chargés de la surveillance des frontières) ils ont depuis aménagés un accès via un escalier en bois, les bas-reliefs ayant été protégés par une grille afin de stopper les dégradations. Ils dateraient du Xe siècle, avant même donc la construction du temple de Preah Viharn dont on estime sa fondation vers le XIe-XIIe siècle.

L’aspect de la roche sur le plateau, plus noire que rouge à mes yeux, est assez particulier. La falaise abrupte qui longe le plateau de Pha Mo I Daeng fait partie d’une chaîne de montagne appelée Dangrek (aussi orthographié Dong Rak), qui fait office de frontière naturelle entre la Thaïlande et le Cambodge, sauf le temple donc, qui bien que situé au sommet de la colline est considéré comme propriété du Cambodge.

Embrouille au temple de Preah Viharn

Pour la petite histoire donc, ce conflit s’est notamment ravivé après que le site fût ajouté au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO en 2008. La Thaïlande n’acceptant pas le jugement de la cour internationale de la Haye en 1962, adjugeant le temple au Cambodge sur la base d’une carte datant de 1907, carte tracée par des officiels français, le Cambodge étant alors sous le protectorat de la France dans ce que l’on connaissait comme l’Indochine.

Il se trouve qu’au moment du tracée de cette carte les officiels avaient donc rencontrés des représentants du royaume du Siam (devenue la Thaïlande) afin de délimiter ensemble la frontière.

Frontière qui à l’époque avait naturellement été déterminé par la présence de cette chaîne montagneuse dont cette colline comme évoqué précédemment. Si la France a abusée en donnant cette carte faussée au Siam, la cour internationale a donné son jugement en faveur du Cambodge à l’époque sur la foi que les autorités Thaïs n’ont jamais contestés ni à l’époque du tracé, ni dans les années qui suivirent, la délimitation faites sur cette fameuse carte de 1907…

La Thaïlande a donc suite à l’inclusion du monument au patrimoine de l’UNESCO voulu réclamer de nouveau le temple comme étant situé en Thaïlande en faisant appel du jugement de 1962. Il y a donc eu un nouveau procès récemment, la CIJ (Court Internationale de Justice) a juste confirmé son jugement de 1962, ordonnant donc aux troupes Thaï (et Cambodgiennes également) de quitter les lieux sans délais, car les 2 armées se clashaient régulièrement depuis 2011, parfois sautant sur des mines encore présentes dans le coin. Jugement rendu le 11 Novembre 2013 dernier et l’accès au sommet est donc maintenant possible mais sans pouvoir approcher le temple, il est également interdit de prendre le temple en photo (normalement).

Temples Khmer et des cascades

Au final donc on apercevra le temple au loin, sachant que s’il y a maintenant un chemin d’accès possible depuis le Cambodge (depuis 2003), l’accès principal est lui en Thaïlande… Dit autrement il faut donc techniquement entrer en Thaïlande depuis le Cambodge pour le visiter…

A noter la présence dans le coin d’autres ruines khmer comme le Don Tuan, petit temple situé à quelques kilomètres de là, les « twin stupas » et 2 chutes d’eaux notamment que nous ne visiterons pas car nous privilégierons notre objectif, le parc national de Phu Chong Na Yoi, à quelques 73km de la jonction dont je fais mention en début d’article.

Si cela vous intéresse les 2 chutes d’eau sont la Tham Khun Sri situe au-dessus d’une grotte, et la Phu La-ô

Accès au temple interdit depuis la Thailande mais à priori possible depuis le Cambodge mais c’est un long trajet…

Comment s’y rendre : En dehors de la location de voiture, il n’y a pas de transport public venant dans le coin (celui ci étant au final un cul de sac vu que la frontière est fermée) Le plus simple est de se renseigner depuis Ubon Ratchathani.
