From The Kerala Story to Zara Hatke Zara Bachke: 5 films of 2023 that haven’t arrived on OTT yet

Films like The Kerala Story and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke attained success at the box office but have still not arrived on any streaming platform yet.

The arrival of OTT happened in India almost a decade back. But the rise in watching online content boomed from 2020 onwards as the cinema halls were shut during that time to combat COVID-19 pandemic. Even after the cinema halls opened and started running to packed capacity, a section of the audience has been eagerly awaiting the release of some films on OTT. Every noteworthy film has been arriving on OTT eight weeks after its release. But there are some films who haven’t arrived on streaming platforms even months after their theatrical release.

The subject of this Rajkumar Santoshi directorial was enough to generate interest – Mahatma Gandhi and his killer Nathuram Godse having a debate over their respective ideologies. However, it literally went unnoticed at the box office because of an absence of a big star and, more importantly, the makers deciding to release it alongside Shah Rukh Khan’s biggie Pathaan, which became a runaway blockbuster. But there is enough interest in the film because, as mentioned above, for its subject. Surprisingly, there is no news about its OTT release yet.

The Kerala Story

The Sudipto Sen directorial is the biggest surprise on this list. Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, Sonia Balani, the movie told the story of young girls being lured into relationships by evil men in order to get them converted to Islam. Despite not a single big star associated with it, it went onto earn a mammoth Rs. 242.20 crores. Hence, it remains a mystery as to why it hasn’t arrived on OTT yet.

Zara Hatke Zara Bachke

This is another major surprise on the list. The Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan starrer looked like an OTT film but the makers released it in theatres. It became a surprise hit of the year as it went onto earn a very impressive Rs. 88 crores at the box office. Despite it being over six months since the film released in theatres, it still hasn’t got a release on any streaming platform as yet.

The Lady Killer

Directed by Ajay Bahl, the film had decent face value because of its lead cast of Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar. But The Lady Killer got a tiny release in theatres and that too without any publicity and promotions. Normally, this happens when the makers are more interested in its OTT release. However, three months after its miniscule release, the film hasn’t arrived on streaming yet.

Ganapath – A Hero Is Born

Filmmaker Vikas Bahl’s movie was in the news for it being a rare Bollywood movie to have a dystopian theme. It also had known actors like Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon and Amitabh Bachchan in pivotal roles. However, Ganapath – A Hero Is Born just bombed at the box office. More than three months after its theatrical release, it still hasn’t arrived on OTT. This is a surprise considering the popularity of its cast.

The Kerala Story beats Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar; enters the 100 cr. club in 9 days.

A little over a week ago we saw the release of the Vipul Shah production The Kerala Story. Starring Adah Sharma the film received mixed responses to its trailer, however based somewhat on true events the business of the film at the box office witnessed a good rate of growth. In fact, after opening on a steady note, the collections of The Kerala Story continued to see growth even on weekdays. Aadujeevitham Box Office Triumph: Prithviraj's Survival Saga Shines on Day 5

Prithviraj Sukumaran's latest venture, Aadujeevitham, continues to set the box office ablaze, surpassing Monday's test with flying colors and outshining recent Malayalam hits.

After a stellar opening weekend, director Blessy's survival drama Aadujeevitham showcased resilience as it navigated through Monday, maintaining its stronghold amidst the ebb and flow of daily collections. The film, which has garnered widespread acclaim since its release, exceeded expectations on Monday, setting a new benchmark for Malayalam releases in 2024.

Despite a predictable dip post-weekend, Aadujeevitham recorded a commendable nett of Rs 5.25 crore in the domestic market on Monday, marking a 39 per cent decrease from its Sunday earnings, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. With this, the film's total domestic nett now stands at an impressive Rs 35.55 crore, with a global gross of Rs 64.85 crore.

Aadujeevitham maintained an overall occupancy rate of 53.74 per cent across Malayalam markets on Monday, showcasing consistent performance throughout the day. Morning shows commenced with a 40.85 per cent occupancy, steadily increasing to 52.52 per cent in the afternoon and peaking at 61.26 per cent in the evening. Even night screenings maintained a robust 60.31 per cent occupancy.

In its home turf of Kerala, Aadujeevitham raked in Rs 3.85 crore on its fifth day, with 255,885 admissions across 1,387 shows, achieving an impressive occupancy rate of 66.79 per cent.

The film's Monday collection notably surpasses other 2024 Malayalam blockbusters such as Manjummel Boys, Premalu, Bramayugam, and Abraham Ozler, further solidifying Aadujeevitham's status as a game-changer in the industry.

Aadujeevitham's success defies conventional norms, as it lacks typical mass appeal or fan-centric elements. Instead, its triumph signifies a shift in audience preferences and viewing habits, bolstering the industry's prospects.

In addition to its box office prowess, Prithviraj Sukumaran's stellar portrayal of Najeeb has earned widespread acclaim, with critics lauding his career-best performance. Despite initial skepticism, Sukumaran's portrayal of Najeeb exudes authenticity, elevating Blessy's narrative to new heights.

As Aadujeevitham continues its triumphant march, it not only celebrates its own success but also paves the way for a new era in Malayalam cinema, characterized by innovation, authenticity, and unparalleled storytelling.

NEW DELHI (AP) — A former Jehovah's Witness has been detained on suspicion of setting off an explosive device that killed three people and wounded 50 others at a denomination gathering in southern India, authorities said Monday.

Hundreds of Witnesses were at a local prayer session Sunday at the Zamra International Convention Center in the town of Kalamassery in Kerala state when the explosion took place. An improvised explosive device placed inside a tiffin box was believed responsible, the state’s top police officer, Sheik Darvesh Saheb, said.

The suspect was identified by police as Dominic Martin, a former member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses who posted a video on Facebook claiming responsibility for the blast before surrendering to the police. Martin, a local, said in the video he decided to carry out the blast because he feels the Jehovah’s Witness theology is wrong.

“They teach that all people of the world would perish and only they will live. What should we do with people who long for the ruin of the entire people in the world. I could not find a solution. I took the decision realizing that this idea is dangerous to the country,” Martin said in the video.

Police said they were still trying to verify Martin's claims of responsibility for the blast.

Jehovah’s Witnesses identify as Christians but are guided by distinctive beliefs and practices. They are known for their door-to-door proselytism.

India, with a population of more than 1.4 billion people, has about 60,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses followers, according to its adherents.

The Kerala Story recently entered the third week of its release. Without the movie being screened in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, Sudipto Sen's directorial managed to cross Rs. 175 crore mark at the box office. As of now, the film has collected approximately Rs. 178.32 crores. 

Producers Guild of India objects to state-enforced bans

Producers Guild of India recently reacted to state-enforced bans on The Kerala Story. They released an official statement that read, "The Producers Guild of India is distressed by, and would like to record its strong objection to, state-enforced bans on The Kerala Story. As emphasised by us on several occasions in the past, film releases are regulated by CBFC and any film that complies with this statutory requirement should face no further hurdles in having the paying public decide on its fate."

Who will be the Angry Young Man of Indian politics?

India vs Bharat. It’s a political slogan but it’s truer than ever before. We must accept there are two Indias.

Just think.

The only time I travel by train or bus is when I am in Kerala.

When I need grocery or vegetables I book online.

Most of us middle class rarely get to see Bharat or know its share of problems.

The only time we do that is when we take an Uber or Ola cab and strike a conversation with the driver. Or when there is whitewash or construction work on at home.

When such an opportunity presented itself recently, I decided to take up the most pressing issue these days.

Why are Pushpa and KGF super-duper hits when Hindi films are tanking at the box office?

The cab driver was very clear. “Hindi films bekaar ho gaye hain. Dekho to south ke films dekho.”

He then gave me a tip, “If you happen to be down, just watch Pushpa or KGF. It will lift your mood.”

“Why not RRR,” I asked.

“RRR bakwas hai, aap Pushpa aur KGF dekho.”

As I got out of the cab, he said, “Pushpa Part 2 will be better. Some new villain has come His name is Shekhawat. But Pushpa is a proud man. I fear he will die in the next part.”

The painters at my house concurred with the cab driver.

I acted on their advice and watched Pushpa and RRR and bits of KGF.

Pushpa is a kolamass film. So is KGF. Both have punch dialogues and action.

Now RRR is tricky. RRR is a patriotic film that ends with the protagonists becoming Ram and Bheem to finish off the British colonizers. Of the three films this one has better special effects. It is a raging hit among the middle class. Then why were the cab driver, carpenters and painters gushing over Pushpa and KGF more than RRR?

This became a hot topic in our weekend drinking session.

After three large pegs, we started to see light.

“Many Hindi films that have released over the last few months have also been patriotic films and turned out to be duds,” pointed out one.

“We are being fed patriotism round the clock on news TV free of cost.  After this we are expected to pay to see more patriotism in the theatres,” explained another, “We want to forget our worries and enjoy a bit. Pushpa and KGF do that.”

“There is more to Pushpa and KGF,” the wise one among the drinkers theorised, “Heroes in both films are taking on the establishment. They are the Angry Young Men of today.”

He then down another double large and extrapolated further, “There is anger in society. The question is who will channelize it.”

Filmmaker Sudipto Sen’s The Kerala Story has been taking the box office by storm, right from its opening day when it earned Rs. 8.03 crores. This was just a start to a winning journey for the Adah Sharma starrer. Currently, the film has made a remarkable Rs. 136 crores till its second weekend. While doing this, it has gone past the lifetime collections of some prominent and successful female-centric films like Gangubai Kathiawadi and Raazi, which had finished on Rs. 129.10 crores and Rs. 124 crores respectively.

But that’s not all. The Kerala Story has also achieved another feat in its victorious journey. It has now entered the list of the all-time highest 2nd Sunday grossers at number 7 with Rs. 23.75 crores, which it scored yesterday.
