A lone tomb, a memory of Syonan Shipyard, and their links to Keppel House
Much has been made about the “mysterious” solitary Japanese tomb sitting on the southern slopes of Mount Faber. The tomb, which could be thought of as a memorial to a painful time in Singapore’s history, contains the remains of a member of staff of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) Kobe shipyard, a naval architect by the name of Komoto Ekasa (or Omoto Egasa). Komoto was among an group of 94 MHI…

Long Ya Men, or Dragon’s Teeth Gate, was a craggy granite outcrop that once stood at the gateway to Keppel Harbour in Singapore, near the present site of Labrador Park. Known locally by the Malays as Batu Berlayer ("sailing rock"), it served as navigational aids to ancient mariners sailing around this narrow channel, along with another rock on the opposite side.
In the 14th century, the outcrops were recorded by the traveler Wang Dayuan in his travelogue Daoyi Zhilüe. During that time, there was a large settlement in the area that was prone to pirate attacks. It is also said that the rocks assisted Zheng He, a Chinese explorer who navigated around Singapore during his seven voyages to the west.
The more prominent of the two outcrops was known as "Lot's Wife" to the British sailors, referring to the Biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Unfortunately, both were blown up in 1848 by Straits Settlements surveyor John Thomson in order to widen the entrance to the new harbor.
In 2005, a 19-foot (6-meter tall) stone replica of Long Ya Men was built near its original site to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Zheng He's maiden voyage. It was originally designed to replace the nearby Berlayer Beacon, but in the end, the replica was placed a few feet away from it instead, due to the Singapore Heritage Society's objection that the beacon itself was a heritage site.

Our guide from @sentosa_island , Saifullah Kamaludin, was fantastic. Interesting and knowledgeable, with a passion for his job as co-lead of the Culture and Heritage initiatives under the Sustainable Sentosa programme. We literally Lara Craft Tomb Raider through the wilderness of Sentosa's forests this morning to find the remains of World War II. And yes, the area is out of bounds, only opened during this organised visits cos its a safety hazard without proper guides, the safety ropes, and paramedics and ambulance on standby. Wear proper hiking boots, lots of mozzie repellant and be prepared to climb and feel like you're "jungle-ing" your way through roots, leaves, branches and more. Thank you @nhb_sg! The Fall of Singapore, also known as the Battle of Singapore, took place in the South–East Asian theatre of the Pacific War. The Japanese Empire captured the British stronghold of Singapore, with fighting lasting from 8 to 15 February 1942. To mark the 81st anniversary of the Fall of Singapore, the National Heritage Board (NHB) returns with its annual Battle for Singapore initiative with a series of special guided tours, talks, exhibitions and film screenings documenting the event. For more details, visit https://go.gov.sg/bsg2023 Registration opens on 8 February 2023, 10am at https://bsg2023.peatix.com. From 10 February to 5 March 2023, Battle for Singapore 2023 will take participants on a journey to trace the roots of Singapore’s wartime past, and uncover the hidden stories about various World War II (WWII) sites. This year, participants will get a chance to explore the grounds of Fort Connaught through a special access tour, which is the first-ever public tour since the fort’s construction in 1878. Built for the defence of Keppel Harbour, a crucial ship-building and repair facility in Singapore, Fort Connaught was armed with 9.2-inch guns – these were the largest on Sentosa, and were used to engage invading Japanese troops during the Battle for Singapore. The tour will give participants a glimpse into the abandoned Fort’s history, construction and its role in Singapore’s defence during the Japanese invasion of WWII. Riots situation in Penang and Malacca
8 May 1890
What once started as a simple racial riot has turned into a battle between the Government and the Secret Societies. The Toa Pek Kong in Penang has intensified attacks around George Town and Sungei Pinning while the Ghee Hin in Malacca has started attacks in Tanjong Kling, Klebang Besar and, more crucially, Malacca Town. This development has started spooking traders, who have avoided those 2 ports in favour of Singapore's Keppel Harbour, which remains conflict-free.
This has drawn the attention of the British Colonial Office, who are eagerly awaiting the Government’s response to the developing situation and a framework for the implementation of the Secret Societies Ordinance to prevent further attacks by Secret Societies.

How a Brutal POW Camp Became an Idyllic Island Paradise
In Singapore, a new trail and national monument explore Sentosa Island’s past as a pirate haven and military complex—well before it became a popular family getaway.
— By Ronan O'Connell | March 24, 2023
Each day tourists ride cable cars over Singapore’s Keppel Harbour to a luxurious holiday isle haunted by death. In the world’s third most densely populated country, Sentosa Island is a popular getaway, thanks to its sandy beaches, majestic rainforest, lavish resorts, and theme parks. (And it was a setting in author Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians.) But lurking behind that idyllic veneer are startling tales of torture, plunder, and deadly epidemics.
Sentosa was known for savage pirates and a brutal prisoner of war camp before the Singapore government converted it into an upmarket vacation destination in the 1970s. Now 10 million people a year visit this island, which is less than a mile from the mainland and connected by rail and cable car.
Singapore could have buried Sentosa’s disturbing past beneath its cheerful present. Instead its government recently declared the 19th-century Fort Siloso a national monument and is creating fresh tourism programs that embrace its bleak history.

Pirate Haven
Prior to being renamed Sentosa 50 years ago, this 1,200-acre island had an eerie moniker. It was called Pulau Blakang Mati, which means “the island behind which lies death.” That name could be linked to sea nomads who once lived on Singapore’s Brani Island and may have buried their dead on adjacent Sentosa, explains Kwa Chong Guan, adjunct associate professor of history at the National University of Singapore.
Sentosa’s lethal reputation was burnished by pirates and an invisible enemy. In the first half of the 1800s, a mysterious epidemic killed a large percentage of the island’s population, which then included bands of buccaneers. Singapore’s waters brimmed with seafaring criminals long before it was settled by the British in 1819, says Stefan Eklöf Amirell, author of Pirates of Empire.
Tumblr media
He says the Singapore Strait, which runs parallel to the nation’s south coast, had always been “excellent for piracy.” This was due to its heavy ship traffic and abundant ambush locations on small, forested islands like Sentosa. Even after the Brits arrived, pirate plunder persisted. “Singapore being a hub of free trade, arms trade, and easy recruitment of crews inadvertently encouraged piracy,” Amirell says of this early colonial period.
Tourists now walk in the footsteps of buccaneers at Fort Siloso. Before it was erected on the northern headland of Sentosa in 1878, this site was popular with pirates, says Goh Geok Yian, associate professor of history at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.
Tumblr media

To reach the British port at Keppel Harbour, merchant ships had to navigate the narrow strait between that headland and the mainland. “This [location] provided the perfect combination for mounting ambushes against ships,” Goh says.
From Fort To POW Camp To Resort
Siloso was among a cluster of British coastal forts built in the late 1800s to defend Singapore from threats such as the Russian navy, Goh explains. Siloso, the only one intact, now enjoys Singapore’s highest level of heritage protection as a new national monument.
To access this hilltop fort, visitors follow an elevated walkway through a forest canopy. The jungle rustles with macaques; brahminy kites soar above; and Singapore’s skyline unfurls to the east, with serene Siloso Beach to the south.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
In another Fort Siloso display, British soldiers are depicted transporting and loading ammunition in a bunker. Photograph Via Alamy
This natural splendor soon gives way to hulking artillery and grim history. Visitors can inspect the fort’s anti-aircraft structures, command towers, machine gun posts, and sprawling network of bunkers, tunnels, and barracks. A small museum uses videos, photos, and maps to tell Siloso’s story.
The fort was designed to counter seaborne attacks from the south. But it was from the north that Siloso received its fiercest foe. In 1941, the Japanese invaded Singapore overland from Malaysia, and Siloso’s weaponry was shifted accordingly. That had little impact. Singapore fell in 1942 and the Japanese turned this fort into a prisoner of war camp for British and Australian troops.
These dark tales haunt the lantern-lit night tours of Siloso, launched in December. They are also woven into the new Sentosa Heritage Trail, a signposted route past 30 historic sites, including former army offices and hospitals, most of which are explained by interpretive signs. Amid the island’s golf courses and thrill rides, the trail charts Sentosa’s unlikely evolution from pirate port to combat complex to, finally, holiday haven.

Legislative Assembly Press
Treehouse Villas…?
Mr. Lim Koon Teck, in a sudden bid of generosity, built 3,000 houses in the middle of the thick forest to provide affordable housing for the citizens. However, upon arriving at their new residences, they scratched their heads, wondering how to get up their new treehouse villas. For the fortunate few who were proficient in climbing trees, they arrived at their new home only to have a surprise “pet” waiting for them at home. Perhaps it was a good thing that the Sembawang fire caused them to burn down. Maybe it was all part of the plan?
Keppel Harbour Revival
Efforts by Ahmad Ibrahim and Lim Chin Siong have resulted in the revival of the Keppel Harbour and Ford Factory. They were able to secure funding from a mysterious wealthy organisation from Malaya to revive this failing infrastructure. Workers at the port feel grateful for their efforts.
Public Private Partnership aids in improvement in Hospital Infrastructure
Joseph Braga reached out to wealthy citizens in Singapore requesting for their generosity in funding to upgrade the hospitals and clinics in Singapore. A total of 5 new hospitals are planned to be built across Singapore. The improvement work started In return, the wealthy investors were given the following benefits:
30% tax cut for the wealthy investors
20% ownership of every hospital benefitted through this initiative
Braga promises these hospitals would prioritise care for the poor.
However, wealthy investors continue to be sceptical over tax reductions as no bill has been passed to honour their end of the deal. With construction works about to begin, should their deal not be upheld, the investors would consider suing the Legislative Assembly for breach of contract.
In other news, has Braga stopped caring about his flagship program BragaCare? The permit for his temporary clinics is expiring as hundreds of doctors and nurses face potential job loss should these clinics close. Although communities, especially rural communities, have grown fond of this initiative, failure to safeguard the clinics could eliminate any good will they have earned from this initiative.
Infrastructure gets a facelift
Efforts by Minister Francis Thomas have allowed for improvements in infrastructure across the colony. However most of the improvements seems to be rather superficial as they address issues found mainly in wealthy constituencies as rural constituencies continue to fall behind. Some of the improvements include:
Painting staircase railings
Fixing cracked pavements near trees by pouring concrete into the cracks
Repotting trees from rural communities into wealthy communities
Building bridges between buildings with no entrances to those bridges

The symbol was designed by Alec Fraser-Brunner, a member of the Souvenir Committee and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, for the logo of the Singapore Tourism Board.
The Merlion is on top of the Dragon's Teeth Gate, is the name Chinese explorer Wang Dayuan recorded for Batu Belayar, a craggy granite outcrop that formerly stood at the gateway to Keppel Harbour.
It greets visitors coming to singapore.

A house on which Singapore's modern port was built
A house on which Singapore’s modern port was built
There is little doubt that Singapore’s port has been a key driver of its success. The roots of the port as we know of it today were really laid by commercial dock companies established in the mid-1800s, chief amongst which were the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company and the Patent Slip and Dock Company (later the New Harbour Dock Company). Their possession of wharfage originally put up to support repair…

Sentosa Island - 25 January 2022
Sentosa Island – 25 January 2022
Sentosa Island is a sunny island off Singapore’s main island’s southern shore. The Keppel Harbour separates the island from the main island of Singapore, and is next to Pulau Brani, a smaller island wedged between Sentosa and the main island. The island was renamed Sentosa from its original name, Pulau Belakang Mati, in 1972 as it was to be developed into a tourist attraction. It was previously…

HARBOUR COMPANIES JOIN THE FIGHT!
Fearing further industrial action, Harbour companies have collectively enacted policies similar to that of the bus companies. Harbour workers are going on strikes, as a result. In the long term, this would end up increasing delays in the transport system as goods from the Harbour would not be quickly unloaded and transported into the mainland. Lim Cher Keng joined the protests himself outside of the Singapore Harbour Board, gaining the support of workers.
Meanwhile, members Ibrahim and Lim Chin Siong have obtained funds from a mysterious source to upgrade the Keppel Shipyard and the Ford Factory
In other areas, fights are erupting between unknown figures and striking workers. The unknown figures are saying nothing, except for s*ck deep, which has been disregarded as lewd comments.

Originally known as “Salat” Road, which meant “straits” in Malay. Salat Road was so named as it led to Keppel Harbour, known as Silat until 1819. Interestingly, Neil Road was also known as “Goo Chia Chwee Sia Lor”, which means “steep street of Kreta Ayer”. Part of its rich history includes a period where it was part of a nutmeg plantation owned by Dr Montgomerie. It was later changed to Neil Road as a tribute to the late Colonel Neill of the British empire. Neil Road is notable for its rows of culturally conserved shophouses. The first shophouse conservation project by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) stands proudly at 9 Neil Road. Another fun fact, 147 Neil Road was owned by the grandfather of the late PM Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Hoon Leong, where the late PM Lee lived for a few years. Sol is excited to be a part of Neil Road’s legacy and hope to be something Neil Road will be known for in future.
