I have had sci-fi jungle warfare in my mind lately. Catachan Jungle Fighters, Sardaukar, the specialist units from Star Wars like the shoretroopers and scout troopers, some of the crazier rejected ideas from the Jurassic Park franchise, the mercs from Avatar, etc.
Is powered armor feasible for jungles, even at the minimal exoskeleton level? I personally doubt it unless the flora, and thus gaps, are huge.
In a universe with advanced weapons designed to defend advanced armor, but the battlefield being a jungle that makes heavy body armor almost impossible to use, do you scale back your weaponry, or is everyone just engaging with vastly overpowered weapons?
Related to the previous, what "outdated" or "inferior" weaponry in a normal sci-fi setting might still have a role in jungle operations?
Sentry and sniffer dogs have a good track record in such environments, with decades of selective breeding possible in a setting's backstory, what animals might be useful for these units?
Any thoughts on uniforms or special equipment for these environments?

i dont know a thing abt the lost tv show but the 2008 lost game (lost: via domus) rules a bit. incredible music great jank and a Theoretically compelling protagonist
#elliotts brought down by the fact that he just does NOT emote and barely reacts to the stuff going on around him but his--#--backstory is a little fun to think about. getting a woman killed after he worked w her for years in order to get dirt on government--#--secrets (? maybe its not Government secrets but i cannot remember its like chemical warfare and shit). the drive to do right by the truth#--corrupted by a desire for reputation and power after losing his old prestigious job and the way he papers over that with a shithead--#--confidence. him lying to jack and then running into the jungle and getting yelled at abt it for the rest of fthe game was pretty funny ig#a very big fan of crikens movie game mondays bc these old licensed games get a light shined on them and their possible virtues finally--#--seen amidst all of the comedy of the fact they made a Lost Videogame#i had no idea telltale made a number of jurassic park chapters ! the story blows and it suffers from everything Telltale but theres some--#--neat scenes and a SHOCKING number of dinosaur death cutscenes. its cool to see !!

#silverwing#silverwing saga#sunwing#kenneth oppel#this book is messed up#or just the first half#i am so glad i waited until i got older to read it because this would have traumatized me#my mom said shade was in survival mode and chinook was in shock and i definitely did not realize that when i read it myself#also the obvious religious overtones#i looked it up back when i first read it and apparently this happened historically#if anyone out there is interested in reading the silverwing sequel there is compelling stuff in there#jungle content and rebellion FINALLY#but there's also some traumatizing stuff in there#i'm spoiling it because fuck it this shouldn't have been in a children's book#animal testing#using animals in warfare#bombing#yeah it gets serious#i javen't even read the part where the vampyrum society is revealed or the obvious eclipse happens but i know it's going to go hard#goth is so petty i hate him /j#goth as in a character name#also love kenneth for having all these mythological and natural character names and then there's just g o t h#don't even get me started on throbb#like sir what possessed you to make that a character name?#ngl i hope i see him again in firewing#and he's not like enslaved again#i know he's a cannibal but like he deserves better#i'm not in the hannibal fandom but isn't this just the general consensus?#i might be way off maybe people want him to suffer#rambling like me at my best

I read a very interesting article recently.
Hiroo Onoda is a famous name among WWII history buff circles. He was the soldier who disappeared into the Philippine jungle at the end of the war with three other soldiers, and ended up being the last to surrender after 29 years fighting a "guerilla war" until he surrendered in 1974. For at least twenty years he fought with one other, Kinshichi Kozuka; who was killed by police in 1972.
The article was about one woman named Mia Stewart, a Filipino-Australian, who's trying to get the funding to finish a documentary she's been working on for about 20 years.
The documentary she's making is trying to shed a little more light than the fascinating "lone samurai" legend that has been built up around Onoda. It very pointedly asks one thing -- what is this "guerilla war" he was fighting for 29 years? Who were his opponents? Who was he fighting?
Onoda (and Kozuka until his death) were killing, sometimes in very gruesome ways, almost exclusively Filipino civilians. Innocent people who were just living their normal lives -- who couldn't fight back. One of their victims was Mia Stewart's great uncle, when she was barely two years old.
The article essentially asks, "war hero or serial killer?"
Those civilians he stalked and killed or stole from for nearly thirty years weren't ever asked their opinion before the Filipino president gave a blanket pardon, Onoda was welcomed home a hero, and he gained worldwide fame. Their side of the story entirely forgotten as some nebulous force he was fighting "guerilla warfare" against.
It was genuinely kind of enlightening because even I have kind of looked at the Onoda story as a, "wow that's crazy" and never really gave it more thought of "who exactly was he fighting?" I figured he was shooting at cops, if anything. But no, it was nothing as simple as that.
The documentary is not out yet (she doesn't have the funding to finish it, the article was essentially one long ad to go "and if you can donate please do so") but there is a nine minute extended trailer from two years ago
On some level I think if I'd just given it any ounce of thought I'd have gone, "who was he fighting actually?" But instead I just assumed he spent nearly thirty years fighting cops… not doing what the IJA did best and mutilating helpless civilians. But I bought the popular narrative entirely and didn't give an ounce of a think at the question of who was he fighting in this 'guerilla war.'
"Actively fighting a war… against who?" is a question that just straight up never came to my mind.
