Today, the gallery has 3,000 works in its permanent collection, and has grown to become a dynamic institution comprising four buildings, a park, and various projects, such as its Touring Museum and The Factory Platform, which aims to involve the local community in all aspects of the creative process.

Following the establishment of the JNGFA, Her Royal Highness was inspired to further her education by studying art movements in the region. She received a doctorate in Islamic Art from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in 1993, and has since written and edited several books on the history of Islamic Art.

In addition to teaching at three leading Jordanian universities, the Princess also founded the Higher Institute of Islamic Art and Architecture at Al al-Bayt University and the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Jordan, where she served as its first dean.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present After Our Bodies Meet, a group exhibition curated by Daniel Johnson, featuring works by Margrethe Aanestad, Daniel Arturo Almeida, Dalia Amara, Cyriaco Lopes, and Randy West.

In the novel Tar Baby, Toni Morrison wrote, “At some point in life the world's beauty becomes enough. You don't need to photograph, paint or even remember it. It is enough.” Exploring themes of love and memory, the artists in this show have created works that grapple with how we relate to each other and ultimately posit the question: What is enough? Whether through the investigation of familial bonds as with Almeida and Amara’s work, romantic love in West’s series, or the nature of being in the work of Aanestad and Lopes, the works in this show evoke an ethos of delicateness and a celebration of impermanence.

Margrethe Aanestad

is a Norwegian-born artist (1974), living and working in Brooklyn, NY and Stavanger, Norway. Aanestad studied fine arts at the Rogaland Art College and graduated with a BA from the University of Stavanger in Culture&Art Management (2000). She works in drawing, painting and sculpture, and has exhibited internationally at galleries including Open Source Gallery, NY; Torrance Shipman, NY; Dimensions Variable, Miami; Interface gallery, CA; Kunsthall Stavanger (Norway), Abingdon Studios, England. Since 2001 she has worked independently to initiate, produce, and curate projects at the art scene in Stavanger, where she also co-founded and co-directed the artist-run, non-profit, space Prosjektrom Normanns (2011- 2020). She is one of the co-founders and co-owner of the creative studio/working space ELEFANT (est 2013-). Aanestad serves on the advisory board of Kunsthall Stavanger and Open Source Gallery (NYC). Currently she is working on a commission for NYU/Clive Davis Institute, and will soon enter a 3 month-residency at Residency Unlimited, NY.

Daniel Arturo Almeida

(b. 1992. Caracas, Venezuela) is a cultural producer and artist working through photography, installation, archiving, journalism, and public engagement. His practice chronicles intimate and collective stories that shape belief systems and hierarchies of power in the Americas. The product of generational migrations, Almeida researches images, music, anecdotes, and documents portraying national pride, nostalgia, and collective amnesia. The work observes shared culture through loss, decadence, hope, and empathy. He has exhibited in The U.S.A in various institutions, galleries, and festivals, including La Salita Project, Columbia Teachers College, Project for Empty Space, Satellite Art Show, Doral Contemporary Art Museum, and the SVA Chelsea Galleries, among others. Almeida holds an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts (2020) and a BFA in Painting and Installation from Florida International University (2017). He currently lives and works in Queens, NY.

Dalia Amara is an American-Jordanian multidisciplinary artist in New York working in photography, video, performance, and sculpture. Amara was raised in the US, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, and UAE. She received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, and her BFA from Columbia College Chicago. Amara has lectured, screened, and exhibited in New York, Toronto, and online at White Columns, Gallery 44, and Selena Gallery. Her work has been reviewed in The New Yorker, Artnet News, and The Art Newspaper.

Cyriaco Lopes is a New York-based Brazilian artist has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP), El Museo del Barrio in NYC, the Centre Wallonie Bruxelles in Paris, Casa Degli Artisti in Milan. His work has been curated by artists such as Lygia Pape, Janine Antoni, and Luciano Fabro. He is the winner of the NYC World Studio Foundation Award, the Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis Project Award, the São Paulo Phillips Prize of trip to Europe. He received grants to attend the London Project residency and Skowhegan. Lopes is an associate professor of art at John Jay College / the City University of New York. He also teaches in the Stetson University low residency M.F.A. of the Americas in Poetry in the Expanded Field.

Randy West (born 1960 in Indianapolis, Indiana) is an American fine art photographer, perhaps best known for his distinctive and avant-garde scanner use of the photographic medium, as seen across several series of his work. West is also on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts, and a director of the school's Master of Fine Arts program for photography, video, and related media. West has been represented by the Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York and the Craig Krull Gallery in Los Angeles. He has had solo exhibitions at Jan Kesner Gallery, Yancey Richardson Gallery, Stephen Wirtz Gallery, the Houston Center for Photography, and as part of the Here Theater Project. His work has also appeared in group exhibitions, including exhibitions with the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the International Center for Photography, the San Diego Contemporary Art Museum, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, and the Marlborough Gallery.

Daniel AnTon Johnson is an artist with a diverse practice based in photography, language, film, and video. His work examines how technology shapes notions of identity within popular culture and contemporary visual media. Focusing on authorship and representation, Johnson’s practice explores cultural and visual literacies and how they form worldviews. Johnson has taught and lectured at School of Visual Arts, Adelphi University, Rutgers University-Newark, and Columbia University, and mentored teens at ICP and The Harlem School of the Arts. Johnson holds an MFA in Photography, Video and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts, and an MA in English from Washington College. He currently resides in Brooklyn.

Remembering Roland Hayes.

Roland Hayes (June 3, 1887 – January 1, 1977) was an American lyric tenor and composer. It is a common myth that Hayes was the first world-renowned African-American concert artist. He had a couple of predecessors that acclaimed fame. People like Sissieretta Jones and Marie Selika were very known, but the nature of their performances were not minstrelsy and that made it not possible for them to be recorded by recording companies. The recording companies wanted a vaudeville type of singer. Hayes was able to break this barrier in his career and in 1939 he recorded with Columbia. Critics lauded his abilities and linguistic skills with songs in French, German and Italian.

Early years and family

Hayes was born in Curryville, Georgia, on June 3, 1887, to Fanny and William Hayes. Roland’s parents were tenant farmers on the plantation where his mother had once been a slave. Roland’s father, who was his first music teacher, often took him hunting and taught him to appreciate the musical sounds of nature. When Hayes was eleven his father died, and his mother moved the family to Chattanooga, Tennessee. William Hayes claimed to have some Cherokee ancestry, while his maternal great-grandfather, AbOugigi (also known as Charles) was a chieftain from the Ivory Coast. Aba Ougi was captured and shipped to America in 1790. At Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Curryville (founded by Roland’s mother) is where Roland first heard the music he would cherish forever, Negro spirituals. It was Roland’s job to learn new spirituals from the elders and teach them to the congregation. A quote of him talking about beginning his career with a pianist:

"I happened upon a new method for making iron sash-weights," he said, "and that got me a little raise in pay and a little free time. At that time I had never heard any real music, although I had had some lessons in rhetoric from a backwoods teacher in Georgia. But one day a pianist came to our church in Chattanooga, and I, as a choir member, was asked to sing a solo with him. The pianist liked my voice, and he took me in hand and introduced me to phonograph records by Caruso. That opened the heavens for me. The beauty of what could be done with the voice just overwhelmed me."

At the age of twelve Roland discovered a recording of the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso. Hearing the renowned tenor revealed a world of European classical music. Hayes trained with Arthur Calhoun, an organist and choir director, in Chattanooga. Roland began studying music at Fisk University in Nashville in 1905 although he only had a 6th grade education. Hayes’s mother thought he was wasting money because she believed that African-Americans could not make a living from singing. As a student he began publicly performing, touring with the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1911. He furthered his studies in Boston with Arthur Hubbard, who agreed to give him lessons only if Hayes came to his house instead of his studio. He did not want Roland to embarrass him by appearing at his studio with his white students. During his period studying with Hubbard, he worked as a messenger for the Hancock Life Insurance Company to support himself.

Early career

In January 1915 Hayes premiered in New York City in concerts presented by orchestra leader Walter F. Craig. Hayes performed his own musical arrangements in recitals from 1916–1919, touring from coast to coast. For his first recital he was unable to find a sponsor so he used two hundred dollars of his own money to rent Jordan Hall for his classical recital. To earn money he went on a tour of black churches and colleges in the South. In 1917 he announced his second concert, which would be held in Boston’s Symphony Hall. On November 15, 1917, every seat in the hall was sold and Hayes’s concert was a success both musically and financially but the music industry was still not considering him a top classical performer. He sang at Walter Craig's Pre-Lenten Recitals and several Carnegie Hall concerts. He performed with the Philadelphia Concert Orchestra, and at the Atlanta Colored Music Festivals and at the Washington Conservatory concerts. In 1917, he toured with the Hayes Trio which he formed with baritone William Richardson (singer) and pianist William Lawrence (pianist).

In April 1920, he traveled to Europe. He began lessons with Sir George Henschel, who was the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and gave his first recital in London’s Aeolian Hall in May 1920 with pianist Lawrence Brown as his accompanist. Soon Hayes was singing in capital cities across Europe and was quite famous. Almost a year after his arrival in Europe, Hayes had a concert at London’s Wigmore Hall. The next day, he received a summons from King George V and Queen Mary to give a command performance at Buckingham Palace. He returned to the United States in 1923. He made his official debut on 16 November 1923 in Boston's Symphony Hall singing Berlioz, Mozart, and spirituals, conducted by Pierre Monteux, which received critical acclaim. He was the first African-American soloist to appear with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was awarded the Spingarn Medal in 1924.

Late career

Hayes finally secured professional management with the Boston Symphony Orchestra Concert Company. He was reportedly making $100,000 a year at this point in his career. In Boston he also worked as a voice teacher. One of his pupils was the Canadian soprano Frances James. He published musical scores for a collection of spirituals in 1948 as My Songs: Aframerican Religious Folk Songs Arranged and Interpreted.

In 1925 Hayes had an affair with a married Bohemian aristocrat, Bertha von Colloredo-Mansfeld (1890-1982), née Countess von Kolowrat-Krakowský, who bore his daughter, Maria "Maya" Dolores Kolowrat (1926-1982). Married since 1909 to a member of a German princely family, Hieronymus von Colloredo (1870-1942), twenty years Bertha's senior, he refused to allow the expected child to bear his name or to be raised along with the couple's four older children, managing to quietly obtain a divorce in Prague in January 1926, while Bertha left their home in Zbiroh, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) to bear Hayes' child in Basel, Switzerland. Hayes offered to adopt the child, while the countess sought to resume the couple's relationship, while concealing it, until the late 1920s. Maya Kolowrat would marry Russian émigré Yuri Mikhailovich Bogdanoff (1928-20012) and give birth in Saint-Lary, Gers to twins Igor and Grichka Bogdanoff in 1949, who later attributed their early interest in the sciences to their unhampered childhood access to their maternal grandmother's castle library.

After the 1930s, Hayes stopped touring in Europe because the change in politics made it unfavourable to African–Americans.

In 1932, while in Los Angeles for a Hollywood Bowl performance, he married Alzada Mann. One year later they had a daughter, Afrika. The family moved into a home in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Hayes did not perform very much from the 1940s to the 1970s. In 1966, he was awarded the degree of Honorary Doctorate of Music from The Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford. Hayes continued to perform until the age of eighty-five, when he gave his last concert at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was able to purchase the land in Georgia on which he had grown up as a child.[3]

He died five years after his final concert, on January 1, 1977.

Racial reaction

Even when Hayes became a successful musician he faced the same prejudices as most African-Americans at the time. During his tour of Germany in 1923, some people protested against his concert in Berlin. A newspaper writer criticized him as “an American Negro who has come to Berlin to defile the name of the German poets and composers.” The night of the concert Roland faced an angry audience who mocked him for ten minutes. Hayes stood still until they stopped and then he began singing Schubert’s "Du bist die Ruh". Hayes’s remarkable voice and musical talent won over the German audience and his concert was a success.

The Chicago Defender (National edition of July 25, 1942) reported a case in which Hayes' wife and daughter were thrown out of a Rome, Georgia shoe store for sitting in the white-only section. Hayes confronted the store owner. The police then arrested both Hayes, whom they beat, and his wife. Hayes and his family eventually left Georgia.[3]

On many of his concerts Hayes would attempt to abandon the use of segregated seating. At a concert in Atlanta, Georgia Hayes had the main floor of the auditorium as well as the boxes and first balcony halved between the races. The galleries were reserved for colored students at a special rate. No whites were allowed in them except the ones chaperoning the students.

Hayes taught at Black Mountain College for the 1945 Summer institute where his public concert was, according to Martin Duberman, "one of the great moments in Black Mountain's history" (215). After this concert, in which unsegregated seating went well, the school had its first full-time black student and full-time member of the faculty.

Legacy

* In 1982, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga opened a new musical performance center, the Roland W. Hayes Concert Hall. The concert venue is located at the Dorothy Patten Fine Arts center.

* The Roland Hayes Committee was formed in 1990 to advocate the induction of Roland Hayes into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. In 1992, when the Calhoun Gordon Arts Council was incorporated, the Roland Hayes Committee became the Roland Hayes Music Guild and Museum in Calhoun, Georgia. The opening was attended by his daughter Afrika.

* There is a historical marker located on the grounds of Calhoun High School (Calhoun, Georgia) on the north-west corner of the campus near the front of the Calhoun Civic Auditorium.

* Hartford Stage and City Theatre (Pittsburgh) shared the world premiere of "Breath & Imagination" by Daniel Beaty, a musical based on the life of Hayes, on January 10, 2013.

* Part of Georgia State Route 156 was named for Hayes.

* A bronze plaque, mounted on a granite post, marks Hayes' home, at 58 Allerton Street in Brookline, Massachusetts. The plaque was dedicated on June 12, 2016, in a ceremony in front of the home in which Hayes lived for almost fifty years. The ceremony was attended by his daughter Afrika, former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, Brookline Town officials, and many more.

Bio:

Grew up in London with his three brothers.  He was pretty close to his brothers though he did tend to fall into the middle child stereotypes, especially playing peacekeeper between the parents and his brothers.

Was always interested in art, spending all of his free time sketching or painting. Eventually got accepted into The Slade School of Fine Art at University College London.

After majoring in Fine Art and Art History was able to get a job at the National Gallery in London, working his way up until he was eventually doing art restorations.

After moving to Baberton got a job working at the Art Gallery and helps bring in artists from around the country and curates shows.

Secrets:

While working for the National Gallery in London and helping with restorations he got involved with a crime ring that dealt with forgeries.  After helping trade out a few of the more expensive pieces for fakes, he started to get nervous and decided to join his brother in Baberton but he's worried his past will catch up with him.

Is basically obsessed with his ex girlfriend, Natasha Everett. He didn't handle their break up well and he still feels very protective of her basically feeling that if he can't have her, no one can.

Near North Mobile Media Lab

The Near North Mobile Media Lab actively promotes media arts access for all artists, regardless of age, class, gender, sexual orientation, race or ability. We provide the tools that media artists, students, and media arts audiences in Northern Ontario need to produce, present and enjoy all forms of contemporary media art. We envision a thriving media arts community in northern Ontario that produces innovative work, has access to contemporary presentations, and is an active participant in a national discourse by overcoming regional limitations. ln concrete terms, the Near North Mobile Media Lab facilitates educational workshops, presents exhibitions, screenings and festivals, mentors and provides support to our membership through equipment rentals and project assistance. Far from the centres of population in Ontario, our collective continues to encourage our peers and youth in their explorations of electronic media, in developing their film-making skills and through the professional presentation of their art works.

Holly Cunningham, executive Director at Near North Mobile Media Lab

After graduating from Sheridan College’s Media Arts program, Holly completed a Fine Arts degree from Nipissing University which prompted her move to Northern Ontario. Working as the Executive Director of the Near North Mobile Media Lab (N2M2L) for the past five years, Holly has worked to grow the organization and establish programs that aim to engage youth and emerging artists through the digital and media arts. Holly also sits on the board of directors of the Media Arts Network of Ontario, is chair of the local artist-run centre White Water Gallery and is currently the North Bay rep for Cultural Industries Ontario North. 

Capitol Centre

In 1927, a businessman from Sturgeon Falls purchased the property at 150 Main Street East in North Bay to build a theatre. During construction he went bankrupt and sold his interests to the Famous Players of Canada Corporation. Famous Players opened the doors to the new Capitol Theatre on June 1, 1929 for the screening of In Old Arizona, the first Fox Pictures “talkie” motion picture (movies with sound) of its kind. This brand new theatre had 1455 seats, state-of-the-art technology, elaborate decorative touches, and was referred to as a “palace of splendour.” It wasn’t the only theatre downtown; there was the Bay (Club 151), the Odeon (Northern Tikes), the Crystal Palace (next to Guardian Drugs), and the Royal (Royal Office Suites) – but the Capitol was the grandest of them all and is the only one left open today.

It was in the offices of the Capitol Theatre that Roy Thomson, Lord Thomson of Fleet, started his media empire with the opening of his (and Northern Ontario’s) first radio station CFCH on March 3, 1931 – this later became CKAT. It was in the Capitol Theatre that the Dionne Quints enjoyed many Friday night movies when they could get away from their celebrity lives. The Capitol stood tall through the Great Depression and the Second World War, bringing laughter and plenty of wartime films like All Quiet on the Western Front to North Bay and area audiences. During wartime, patrons could purchase tickets with a scrap of metal from home (pipes, jewellery, cookware, cutlery, etc). This metal was melted down and used to produce munitions for the war effort.

In the 1970s, an organization called North Bay Theatre and Arts Community Centre (TACC) was formed with the goal of establishing an art centre to house all arts-related endeavours within the city and surrounding district. At the time, North Bay had finally developed the Golden Mile area of the Lake Nipissing waterfront, had built arenas and parks throughout the city, and the final missing piece was to have a local performance hall and art gallery. When Famous Players announced in the 1980s that they wanted to convert the Capitol into smaller cinemas, TACC decided that the Capitol was too wonderful to get chopped up into small rooms, and that it could be the perfect facility for their dream arts centre. Since its reopening in 1987 the Capitol Centre and the WKP Kennedy Gallery has seen many great artists Canadian and international, both cherished celebrities and beloved locals like Johnny Cash, Phyllis Diller, Lynn Johnston, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison, Jack Klugman, Blue Rodeo, Canada’s Group of Seven, The Barenaked Ladies, Graham Nash, Ed Eng, Jann Arden, Tom Cochrane, and many more. The Capitol truly is your home for arts and entertainment.

Each artwork is powerful in its ambiguity, containing contradictions in terms of spatial illusion and reference(s) which obliterate any supposed binary between “abstraction” and “representation.” By situating Ito’s work in relation to that of the artists working today, the exhibition opens up a dialogue around abstraction that calls attention to distinctive engagements with color, space, timelessness, and form.

San Francisco-based curator Jordan Stein will elaborate on Ito’s work and life. Alex Chitty is a transdisciplinary artist based in Chicago, IL. Chitty received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Smith College (MA) and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Inclusively and theoretically, Julia Fish’s work can be characterized as both site-generated and context-specific, in temporary projects and installations, as well as in the on-going sequence of paintings and works on paper that she has developed in response to a close examination of the experience of living and working within her home and studio, a 1922 two-story brick storefront in Chicago. Fish has described this process as one which “opens onto questions and critical approaches to the practice of painting, to drawing, and to the nuances and implications of representation/re-presentation.” Concurrent and influential research interests include the related disciplines of architecture, architectural history, and theory. After completing studies for BFA and MFA degrees in Oregon and Maryland, Fish relocated to Chicago in 1985. Her work has been presented in twenty-seven solo exhibitions since 1980, and it has twice been the subject of ‘ten-year’ survey exhibitions; most recently, Julia Fish:bound by spectrum (2019-2020), DePaul Art Museum, Chicago and View (1996),The Renaissance Society at The University of Chicago.. National and international exhibitions include, among others: Galerie Remise, Bludenz, Austria; MAK Center for Art and Architecture/Schindler House, Los Angeles; Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Tang Museum, Skidmore College; the 2010 Whitney Biennial; and most recently, The Long Dream, MCA Chicago. Fish’s work is included in the collections of, among others: The Art Institute of Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Denver Art Museum; DePaul Art Museum, Chicago; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Yale University Art Gallery. Research support includes grants and fellowships from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts/Painting, Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, Cal Arts-Alpert/Ucross Foundation, and competitive faculty research awards from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Julia Fish is Professor Emerita, School of Art and Art History, and UIC Distinguished Professor.

Miyoko Ito (1918-1983) was a Chicago artist known for enigmatic watercolors, oil paintings, and lithographs. Born in Berkeley, CA to Japanese parents, Ito returned to Japan with her family in 1923 to receive a traditional Japanese art education. After returning to California, Ito attended the University of California, Berkeley. During World War II, she and her husband were interned at Tanforan Racetrack near San Francisco under President Franklin Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066. After release, Ito studied at Smith College and The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, settling in Hyde Park; she was tangentially involved with the Imagists. In 1977, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and in 1980, The Renaissance Society held a retrospective of Ito’s paintings.

Avery Z. Nelson (they/them) was born in Rhinebeck, NY and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. They received an MFA from Columbia University. Summer 2021 New York City exhibitions include: Rachel Uffner Gallery, Mrs. Gallery, Harper’s Gallery, and JDJ TriBeCa. Recent solo exhibitions include the Rubber Factory,NYC and JDJ|The Ice House (Garrison, NY). Nelson has received press in The Brooklyn Rail, Artforum.com, Huffington Post, Bad at Sports, Newcity, and New American Paintings. They were a 2019-2021 Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program recipient.

Brittney Leeanne Williams is a Chicago-based artist, originally from Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami (Untitled Art Fair), London, Venice, Italy (Venice Biennale), Antwerp, Copenhagen, and Hong Kong, as well as in Chicago and throughout the Midwest. Williams attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2008-09). She is a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant recipient and a Luminarts Fellow. Williams’ artist residencies include Arts + Public Life (The University of Chicago) and McColl Center for Art + Innovation, among others. Her work is included in Museum X (Beijing) and the Domus Collection (NYC/Beijing), among other public collections.

Curator Bio

Nicole Mauser’s paintings, videos, and installations investigate tensions at play between color fields, materiality, and gestural mark making. Artworks have been exhibited nationally and internationally. Permanent collections include The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (KS) and The Alexander (IN). Recent curatorial endeavors include Exhibitionisms (Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago) and Privates (Carthage College in Kenosha, WI) with fellow collaborator Tobey Albright. Mauser has been a HATCH resident at the Chicago Artists Coalition and DCASE Artist Grant recipient. She earned an MFA from The University of Chicago and a BFA from Ringling College of Art & Design. Currently, she lives and works in Chicago where she runs Space & Time gallery, is an artist member of TSA CHI and a Lecturer in Visual Art at The University of Chicago.

Artist of the Day

Athier Mousawi

In recent years Athier Mousawi’s work has centred on posing unanswerable questions against undefined answers, forming a visual narrative between the two. Since 2007, the subject of much of his work has been Iraq and his diasporic relationship to his foreign homeland, as well as the concept of nostalgic referencing in how we idolise and remember our past, present, and future. Of the main constructs used in Athier's painting, the initial response is that of scale and colour, which guide the viewer through his multidimensional compositions. Symbolism in these large-scale paintings is weaved through layers of fluid figurative forms and hard edge geometric shapes.

Separate to his artistic practice, Athier has worked extensively as an educator in the United Kingdom and abroad. For three consecutive years, beginning in 2007, Athier worked as a British Museum Arab Artist in Residence, working in schools throughout the UK. In 2011, he was selected to serve as the Chasing Mirrors Artist in Residence at the National Portrait Gallery, leading workshops in community centres across London. Athier has also worked in a number of refugee camps as a workshop leader in Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan, and in 2014 was invited by the Palestinian Museum as a Visiting Artist to conduct workshops with children in the West Bank. In 2015, he was selected to work at the artist-run interdisciplinary space Beirut Art Residency.

Born in 1982, Athier lives and works between Paris, London, and Istanbul, and holds a graduate degree in Communication Design with Illustration from Central Saint Martins, UK.
