One of my family members of details in her writing that her parents had named her after this song, and honestly, it paints such a perfect image of the family she described: one of art, culture, hard work, and prosperity. Though they later fell on hard times, to think I can listen to the same song they did--maybe sung in a similar way she heard it, too--is really special.
In his time John McCormack (1884-1945) was the most popular Irish tenor in the world, and Victor’s second most popular recording artist after Caruso. He did not play vaudeville that I have been able to ascertain, but strictly concert halls and opera, although his influence was great upon many a vaudeville singer.

McCormack's recording career was a lengthy one, spanning from 1904 until 1942 and encompassing several hundred discs. Among the tenor's earliest recordings were a series made in London for Odeon. One of those titles is this recording of "Then You'll Remember Me" from Balfe's The Bohemian Girl. This rarely heard recording dates from 1908. This early version differs markedly from McCormack's 1916 Victor recording. The tenor's reading here is much more straight forward and makes for some very enjoyable listening.
Balfe’s Bohemian Girl was premiered in London’s Drury Lane 180 years ago today.
