Few people are as uniquely placed to look back at the legacy of Indiana Jones as Joe Johnston. A founding member of ILM on his way to a stellar movie directing career, Johnston came aboard early in the process to help create the world of Henry Jones Jr, and here he talks with Lucasfilm about that process and how exciting it was to finally have the two titans of 70's and 80's cinema - George Lucas and Steven Spielberg - join creative forces. As a founding employee of ILM, Johnston heard about George Lucas’ idea for an adventuring archaeologist while wrapping up work on 1980’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. “I remember that George talked about making a movie that was sort of roughly inspired by the serials of the ‘30s,” Johnston says. “George was talking about this film about an archaeologist adventurer guy named Indiana Jones, who was actually named after his dog, Indiana, and that Steven was going to direct it, and that ILM was going to do the effects, of course.” Even before he saw any of the script, Johnston had a good feeling about Raiders. “Well, I knew that because it was George and Steven working together, it was going to be something special,” he says. “Plus, it was really different.” Johnston would find, however, that work on Raiders was very different from what he’d grown accustomed to. “There wasn’t a whole lot of design work to be done on it, because it’s not like on the Star Wars movies where you’ve got these spaceships and hardware and costumes and gear to design. It took place in the ‘30s, so it’s not like you’re designing a whole new world,” he says. Still, Johnston relished the opportunity to step back in time creatively. “It was actually a lot of fun,” he says. “I’m a big fan of that period of history. I love the ‘30s and ‘40s. Cars and buildings, even everyday objects were designed to look beautiful, whether they were efficient or not.” In talking about his appreciation for design from this era, Johnston stops to clarify something. “There’s a misconception of what I do, and I’ve been fighting this for decades. People think I’m a visual effects person. I’m not at all, and I never was,” he says. “I was always a designer. When I worked on Star Wars, the task of designing hardware evolved into sequence design and character design and stuff like that, laying out these action and visual effects sequences in storyboard form. But essentially, I’ve always been a designer. And because I designed the stuff that is then used in these great visual effects sequences, everybody thinks I’m a visual effects guy. I’m not at all,” he says with a laugh. “I love visual effects as a tool to tell a story, but now as a director, all I need to know about visual effects is that anything is possible.” [amazon box="B0BSJRSXSQ"]

The Rocketeer (1991)

There are so many superhero movies today people say they've taken over theaters (even though they represent only a small percentage of all titles released). I remember when you needed to read a book to see your favorite super-powered adventurer! All the big names have gotten numerous appearances on the silver screen so how about something a little different? If The Rocketeer isn't on your radar, it should be. It's got what it takes to charm just about anyone.

Set in the U.S. in 1938, stunt pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) discovers a mysterious rocket pack that everyone from the FBI to Nazi operatives want at any cost. Unaware of the device’s importance, Cliff - along with his mechanic Peevy (Alan Arkin) - perfects the rocket’s controls and uses it to become a masked hero.

Director Joe Johnston perfectly captures the look and feel of the era. The film looks, feels. and sounds like was made during the 1930s, which to me gives it a timeless quality. It's bright-eyed and optimistic, unaware of the danger that looms ahead but sure to be ready to face it head-on when it arrives. When Cliff sees this jet pack, he does what the audience members want him to do: wear, get himself a cool helmet and become a superhero. There’s never an instant of considering an ordinary life. Regular guys don’t get the girl in the end, don’t save the day and don’t become legends. Immediately, the picture raises your spirits and gets you excited to see what's next. It’s full of good special effects and “just one chance” jumps mixed in with some light-hearted, good-natured comedic moments.

Although you don't need to know much about "the golden days of Hollywood" to appreciate The Rocketeer, being aware of it enhances your experience. Cliff’s romantic rival is clearly a pastiche of Errol Flynn (he even plays a swashbuckling bandit in a movie being filmed during the events of this film) and recognizing what Howard Hughes did in real life makes Terry O’Quinn's portrayal of the man even more fun. It's got surprising twists in the second half, the hero's costume looks great, little details add that something extra to give the film solid re-watch value (like the news footage before the movie Cliff and his girlfriend Jenny go see). It all builds towards a terrific climax.

Look forward to seeing Jennifer Connelly as Jenny Blake. She’s Cliff’s girlfriend and she'll make your jaw drop. She’s beautiful in that classic style, like a pin-up model or vixen painted on the side of an airplane ready to fly into battle. I was afraid that she'd end up as little more than a damsel in distress for the villains to take hostage, but she’s integral to the plot and proves herself quite capable when the going gets tough.

It's surprising how well this film's held up since its release. It's just the right amount of action and comedy. An easy and instant favorite for everyone who watches. This is what you want in a family movie. Not just something inoffensive or with a nice message; a film that appeals to everyone and that you can all happily watch together. The Rocketter - Disney Junior - Comic-Con Sneak Peak! - #SDCC2019 - Screenshots The Rocketeer is getting a cartoon series on Disney Junior. Which means its a cartoon aimed at younger kids and not 50 year old kids, but the Animation Magazine article does use the phrase “and a rogue’s gallery of comedic villains” which does fairly imply it will contain adventure.  I am also guessing Rocketeer going Disney Junior means that the upcoming Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur cartoon series will not be Disney Junior.
