Since it’s been a year since Burning Shores came out, some thoughts on Seyka:

TL;DR: Great character, really happy with her as a love interest for Aloy. They do some really interesting things with her that I never really see addressed so I wanted to talk about them.
She is tangibly shown to be much more of a match for Aloy through gameplay. Compared to other npcs, she solves things faster, does more damage, is a much more formidable melee combatant, faster climber - she even has a fucking Valor Surge using her Focus that does pretty significant tear damage to large machines like Slaughterspines. Environmental storytelling- Seyka’s skiff has at least 2-3 Tiderippers’ worth of parts, meaning she’s been out on her own killing the things to build boat motors, and she has some ambient dialogue that strongly suggests she’s fought and killed Slaugterspines before. Is some of this npc tech advancements in Burning Shores? Maybe, but it feels intentional.

Seyka has a natural probing curiosity about the old world that for the most part Aloy’s other companions didn’t have without some significant hand-holding from Aloy to get them started, and some of her close friend (but not base team) characters just don’t have at all. I don’t mean this as a moral judgement, everyone is different and has different strengths and priorities , but it’s absolutely critical that a partner for Aloy have that kind of curiosity - it’s such a big part of her character. While she lives in this new world, she’s never going to be entirely a part of it. Like she says, she finds belonging in individuals, and not really the tribes. I don’t really see Aloy settling down in Meridian or Mother’s Heart. She needs to have a life of exploration and discovery and Seyka seems cut from that cloth too, whether she was always that way or being marooned gave her a fresh perspective.
Seyka did risk death using the focus and decided to do it anyway- in Rheng’s notes he calls for capital punishment for her. The threat is never *too* present but honestly I think that’s a broader critique of the series and pretty consistent with the writing of conflicts in Horizon. I agree they could have played up the dramatic tension a bit, but this is a person who weighed the risk of a military execution by a totalitarian state and immediately decided it was worth it to save her sister and others. I think Aloy can intimately relate, given what she went through for Beta.

Even though it’s a DLC, she has a TON of screen time, probably comparable to Kotallo in HFW, and Horizon does SO much storytelling through gameplay and ambient dialogue. I think she’s given a LOT of narrative space to breathe. She’s also has her own musical cues and leitmotifs that do a ton of foreshadowing work through the DLC - in terms of musical cues and framing she’s very associated with the acoustic guitar, and the flute melody in ‘Her Sky, Her Sea’ has for Aloy and Seyka the same function that ‘It Can’t Last’ does for Ellie and Dina in TLOU2 - next time you play Burning Shores, listen for it. That and the guitar cues from ‘The Idea of Home’ and ‘For His Entertainment’ do a lot of emotional work. It’s great stuff.
Okay and lastly- YMMV on this one - I’ve def talked about it with friends before but I don’t think I’ve said it on Tumblr. I’m a firm believer that meta narratives and the way that stories are situated and created in our own world matter and that art deserves to be taken seriously and dissected. I love Horizon, but it, and Aloy as a protagonist, are absolutely drenched in white savior and colonial storytelling tropes. Every time I play Frozen Wilds, all I can think of is Jack Sparrow going “and then they made me their chief”. There’s a lot of iffy stuff in the games, as much as I absolutely love them. We’ll have to see how H3 goes, but Burning Shores is MUCH better about this and honestly Seyka is a huge part of it. The story centers itself on a queer woman of color who is pretty tangibly presented as Aloy’s equal with her own strengths and weaknesses throughout the story and takes the lead just as often if not more than Aloy does, which I find really refreshing. It doesn’t entirely fix Aloy’s white savior issues but I think it’s a really good move for the narrative that continues the themes found in HFW about community and connection.

Bubblegum's Backlog, Vol. 20: Horizon Forbidden West
Okay to be honest I beat this game like the same day I beat Doom. I've just been putting this off because I don't really have to do one for this game since the whole point of these posts is to put the thoughts I have into the ether, and Horizon was a rec from a friend so I have people to talk to about it, but I just like having a record of these things, y'know?
Anyway this game was leagues better than the first. The gameplay felt way more unique. Stuff like the shieldwing and grappling hook made exploration way more versatile. The new weapon and status options were neat too I guess but what really made it feel different from the first was the way the skilltrees were done. The valor surges and weapon abilities were so fun you have no idea. Plus they made melee more viable so you know my unga bunga ass brain went apeshit with that spear once I got it maxed.
The story was... I mean it was good. I still don't really care about the plot. The characters, one the other hand, were so refreshing. It felt like everyone actually mattered. Seeing Erend and Varl's different ways of adapting to their life after the first game, and actually develop did my heart good. I didn't entirely care for Zo or Alva but Kotallo was really cool. Even though I didn't like Beta, her inclusion also felt really good for the game. Tilda and Regalla were also way better villains than the Shadow Carja were. I was loosing my mind during both of their fights. Tilda because I'm a fan of a very specific genre of anime that made me just fangirl the entire time, and Regalla because finally getting a 1v1 brawl where I wasn't being shot at with laser or absolutely decimating my opponent was just way cool.
I also did Burning Shores which I honestly enjoyed more than the base game (unlike Frozen Wilds, fuck Frozen Wilds). Aloy and Seyka bouncing off each other's personalities the whole time was so cute. The end fight of the dlc felt way more climatic than any other point in the series and was also the only time I really struggled in this game. Everything else took me 1-3 tries but that took me over an hour of countless attempts.
I know I ended my last one with a kind of "god I hate Horizon" vibe but after this I'm excited? For more games? I'm confused. I hope they make a monster hunter-style spin off because honestly my favorite part was fighting the machine. With Lance Reddick gone though I'm a little worried Sylens won't be the same (I guess saying he won't be well portrayed is more accurate because no one can do what Lance Reddick did) but I'm still eagerly awaiting the third game.

Sonic Frontiers Pre-DLC-Three Whinefest

I couldn't really get much into Sonic Frontiers, and I thought the final boss and ending was a little lacklustre. Apparently the writers agreed with me, because they're releasing a new ending as free DLC tomorrow.
I actually had a lot of thoughts about Frontiers and this'll likely be the last time I can air them before The Final Horizon comes along and makes me eat humble pie with how good it is. But I don't want to rip on it too hard because I know a lot of effort goes into making games like this.
I think Sonic Frontiers works best for me when I look at it like a tech demo for a future open world Sonic game. Compared to the variety of stages you get in other Sonic games - here's a casino with giant pinball machines, there's a European city full of balloons, here's a mineshaft from Halloween Town - the Frontiers open zones kind of felt sparse and empty, and there wasn't much I could find to do except go from one bit of plot to the next. This is a trap a lot of open-world games fall into, when the world is wider than it is deep, and there's everywhere to go but nothing to do.

However, I did like the enemies. They kind of looked samey aesthetics-wise, but they were all unique and had their own abilities that cleverly played off from Sonic's own, like the enemy disguised as a bounce pad or the one that would steal a Chaos Emerald from you.
In terms of boss fights, I think I preferred the part where you were normal Sonic running up their bodies to being Super Sonic and frantically smashing buttons. I was a big fan of Shadow of the Colossus, so anything that reminds me of those bosses is a plus.

Plot-wise, well... usually I can take or leave Sonic game plots, but this is probably the most plot-heavy Sonic game we've had so far. It's been described as "melancholy", and while it's not exactly grimdark-edgy, I wonder if it's a good fit for a Sonic game. I think the tone that suits Sonic best would be “fun”; not necessarily “silly” or “goofy”, just “fun”. That’s not me saying the whole thing should be happy-go-lucky, I think it should take slow moments every now and then to add complexity to the story.
Sonic's friends have these character arcs where they learn important lessons, like Amy learns not to be creepy-in-love with Sonic, Knuckles learns not to be tethered to the Master Emerald all the time, and Tails learns to stand on his own two feet for the umpteenth time. Part of me feels like maybe they're overcorrecting things that don't need that much correcting - especially Tails, whose whole arc felt kind of like an apology for the whole "Sonic, help me!" throwaway line in Forces.
Then there's Sage, the new character for this game, honouring the SEGA tradition of adding at least one new character every game. Truth be told, I kind of like them adding new characters, as long as they aren't just re-skins of the same "tutorial fairy" archetype (I think that's why Blaze and Silver had the staying power they did, being headlining playable characters in their debut games and all).
Sage had a lot of potential that I didn't think they got to explore. It's an interesting idea that she unconditionally loves Eggman like a father, but learns more of her morals from Sonic, which has the makings of a really tragic character. But they didn't really go in-depth with this my-two-dads-hate-each-other hook, and when they tried to do the whole Toy Story 2 bit with her (you know the part I'm talking about) I just couldn't take it seriously.

The main villain of the game turns out to be a big purple rock, which left me quite underwhelmed considering the build-up it got. The Sonic wiki reckons it's the ultimate overarching evil in all of Sonic ("Oh my God, I should have known! The one behind all this! All this time it was a big purple rock!") which is big talk considering Eggman is right! There! I get they were trying to go for a whole Azathoth/Yog-Sothoth thing, but I think Sonic-style dark gods need some more meat on their bones than the Lovecraft "it's indescribable, just trust me bro" style. I've seen some impressive fan designs for the big purple rock that make it look a lot more malevolent.

Honestly, I think Sage should have been the final boss. That’d really put her feelings between Sonic and Eggman at the emotional core of the story. Imagine once the towers were finished, Eggman comes out of cyberspace and the first thing he tries is to kill Sonic and his friends there and then - maybe he orders Sage to do it - but poor Sage can’t bring herself to kill her Uncle Sonic or disappoint her beloved dad, so she has an emotional breakdown which allows the evil cyber-force to enter into her mind, and the final boss ends up being her piloting this super-titan made of all three of the other titans. And maybe at the end Sonic knocks some sense into her – telling her to be her own person and all that – and she uses her free will to sacrifice herself and stop the cyber-evil. Or something. Look, I still can't believe the final boss was a QTE against a big purple rock, alright?!
But if there's one thing I do like Sonic Frontiers for, it's for being ambitious. If you look around the Sonic Fanon wiki, you'll see a lot of pretty detailed Sonic game ideas, and a lot of them have pretty high stakes and expansive stages - open-world designs featuring ancient evils from ancient civilizations and stuff like that. The first thing I thought of when I saw Frontiers, right when it was nothing more than a teaser, was that it reminded me of those fan game ideas. And in a strange way it works. Kind of. Sorta. I didn't hate it. On reflection.
If nothing else, Frontiers proves that an open-ended Sonic game can work. If the open world was more lively, it'd be a magical experience. Picture Sonic running through the countryside at night, over hill and dale, past streams and forests, the flickering lights of cities in the distance. Slaloming through traffic on the interstate, running up the sides of skyscrapers and springing from the rooftops, pedestrians down below wondering what that blue flash was. That kind of freedom and openness suits Sonic down to the ground. Split the world into denser and busier areas for fast-paced reflex-testing, and wider, quieter areas for taking it all in - that's a true Sonic simulator right there, looking into his world of worlds.
The new DLC also gives SEGA the chance to prove itself with other playable characters, like back in the days of Adventure yore. I actually like the presence of other playable characters - like I say, you don't make a fox with two tails who can fly and not have him playable - so long as they're fun to play as. Honestly, I hope the new DLC does it well, because if it's a success, then the next game might be willing to expand upon all this potential. You never know, we might be looking at a proper Sonic the Hedgehog RPG in a few years, and it could be the biggest Sonic adventure since... uh... Sonic Adventure.
So, yeah - Sonic Frontiers - didn't dig it - could've done better - and I hope it does do better, because it has a hell of a lot of potential, and I'd love to see an open-ended Sonic game taking place in a living, breathing world with the groundwork Frontiers has laid. And if we can play as Tails, Knuckles, Amy and all the rest, so much the better. Bring on Grand Theft Sonic, I say.

An Annotated Mass Effect Playthrough, Part Two
Aliens!  Exposition!  Guns!  Explosions!  Kickass Ladies!  Betrayal!  So much death!

They should have made an advertisement pointing out these things just for me so I would have paid release price for this game.  Ah well, I’ve bought it on 360, Steam and Origin now.  They have my money.
We’re going to make it most of the way through Eden Prime in this post.
One thing Mass Effect does a lot of in the beginning here is exposition.  There’s a lot to learn about the state of the galaxy in 2148, and there are people there to make sure you learn about it.  Jeff and Kaidan only do a little bit of exposition, you learn about Nihilus, a tiny bit about Spectres, and that Captain Anderson is badass.  I wish this scene actually lasted longer -- this is the only time we see Kaidan away from his Orange Corner (or that other orange wall) on the ship for awhile.  I guess there’s the conference room, but still.  If they ever do a remaster, please Bioware, let the companions move around the ship like in ME3 and give our boy better lighting.

I love the flow of the Normandy SR1.  It feels the easiest to get around in since it’s so much smaller... except when you have to get on the elevator.  I also love the dark theme.  The ME2 SR2 always feels so... blinding.  The only thing I miss from the SR2 really is my decked out Captain’s quarters.  I mean does anyone even ever go into the ME1 quarters except to get the one codex entry until it’s sexytime?

I do like ME1′s use of ambient conversations, you get to learn a little about Pressley and Jenkins before talking to them.  Those conversations, though, are just such exposition dumps.  I think they do it fairly well, but there’s so much to remember.  Both Jenkins (with Chakwas) and Pressley really harp on what and who Spectres are, pretty sure even before you talk to Nihilus you have an inkling you’re gonna eventually be one.  
I honestly wish we had more actual interaction with Pressley than what we get here, he has very little to say after this point.  Another hope for a remaster.

This kid Jenkins, he’s got a good career ahead of him if we can tame his hot-headedness.  That’ll be his role in the game, I’m sure, the kid you mentor and grow into a reflection of you.  Good to know he’s from the planet we’re heading to, I’m sure he’ll be a valuable source of information there.
Having played a lot of World of Warcraft, and I mean a LOT, from the alpha, then release, for the next two or three years, the fact that his name was Jenkins was actually a bit of a hint for me even then.  But more in the “Wouldn’t it be funny if...?” and then he did.  Nice. 
I’m really glad Chakwas gets fleshed out a little more in just the one more conversation after this one and in future games.  Because there’s not much to say about her here.
Whew!  Exposition over, right?  We’ve learned about Spectres, the First Contact War, about Eden Prime, that we’re in the Alliance, that there’s Turians and a council that governs things and... we’re good, right?

Wait, didn’t Anderson say he was already with Nihilus in the conference room?  Where’d he go?  What a bro, to step out and let Nihilus make a big turn-around moment of introduction to us.  Okay, more loredump.  Cool.  Really getting the concept of Spectres now, for sure, especially from this guy, who is one!

Finally, Anderson.  Just in time to tell us about Spectres, and Eden Prime, and now it’s time to learn about the Protheans.  Whaaaaat?  You want ME to maybe be a Spectre?  I’m shocked!

I’m sure that this will be a decision that will be deeply impactful through the entirety of the rest of the series.
But here we learn about Protheans, and they lost me a bit on that one when we first played the game.  Who the fuck cares about what happened 20,000 years ago?  THIS IS THE FUTURE!!!  We’re in SPACE!
Well, we wouldn’t get away from the Protheans so easily.

The sky is supposed to be that color red, right? Right Jenkins?
As cool as this level design is, also something that could use improving.  There’s like... no housing here?  Just a bunch of tall towers on the ground all really realy far apart from each other?  You’re on a new planet and everyone lives inside a giant tower?  I mean, good for preventing Urban Spawl I guess.  I’d love to see a more populated Eden Prime.  Even in ME3 we just saw a small dig site and more towers in the distance.  
Anyway, better level up.  Jenkins is young and needs some training if he’s gonna survive this mission!

My first time through, I truly thought I’d fucked up and probably reloaded this fight two or three times before accepting he was just... supposed to die.  And then I remembered his name was Jenkins, knew it was intentional, and laughed.  
Honestly, it’s a great fakeout with making us feel like Jenkins is important, and then having him lose the battle right away.  ME1 is pretty brutal that way. It’s a good way to signal that this game is probably going to rip your heart out, so get used to it.

Shepard and Kaidan have a moment, and I like this because it’s really the first time I think you can really start showing who your Shepard is, with how you react to Jenkins’ death.  Either way, I like it that she tells Kaidan that we need to focus.  I also love that, though we don’t get to see a moment for Jenkins from here on out in ME1, that they finally gave his memory a moment in ME3.

Bioware, give us Ashley and Kaidan living in a Mass Effect Remaster, please.  I will pay $100 for this DLC.  (I know, I KNOW.)  I have only played through with Ashley living all the way through once.  I’m sorry Ash, I love you.  I just... LOVE Kaidan.
But hey that’s HOURS away.   For now, she’s with us, and she’s amazing.

Iiiiif you also used to always punch out Miguel and then like awhile later realized how shitty that was and now know that the “Geinuis is the other side of the coin of Madness” speech here is also really shitty... raise your hand.  Especially since Miguel is, you know, right.   Anyway, do better on a remaster, Bioware?
The one good thing here was the “Thank the Maker” at the very beginning of the encounter.  I want Shepard to visit Thedas.  Give us this DLC, Bioware!!

Oh Nihilus, you were too pretty, and trusting, for this world.  
Bioware, again, in the remaster... please go with your original plan and not make Saren all Gethed out this early.  I wish that could be modded away.  It’s so distracting to have him be OBVIOUSLY HALF MACHINE and everyone being like “Saren?  Working with the Geth?  PREPOSTEROUS!!”

Got some AMAZING screenshots of Sovereign taking off thanks to Flycam.
Also, this is just such an OH SHIT moment.  Look at that thing! It’s terrifying!  Also it’s easy to miss if you’re looking the wrong way, this maybe shoulda been in a cutscene. But even so, when you see it, it fills you with SUCH DREAD.  They do such a great job of amping up the tension and drama and mystery bit by bit on Eden Prime.  Giving you bits of the greater story and also feeding you pieces that will eventually come together, but not for awhile.

I followed Soverign as long as I could before he disappeared.  Got this far away from land.  The actual spaces in the game are huge, but we’ll get to more of that later.

E3 2018
Here’s a lengthy series of crossposts from scalie.club on the respective press events of this year’s E3. In retrospect, I’m a bit more negative in here than I’d like to be (I complain about games like Anthem and FO76 I never particularly intended to buy in the first place, and I’m a little bit negative about Prey, which I think I’ve established I like), but regardless, here it is in case you’re interested:
Electronic Arts
- I saw a take on the reaction to Anthem's multiplayer focus and lack of romance: "Oh, so you want Bioware to just repeatedly make the same game with slight reskins over and over?"
No, I only -trust- them to make story-based RPGs with strong characters/lots of dialogue. That's where their cachet comes from! I'm sure they make good multiplayer for people who want it, but God, @Iron_Spike on Twitter had it right: just let me enjoy highly masturbatory single-player content in peace.
Microsoft
- The XbOne port of NieR: Automata is a criminally late and truly pathetic attempt to court me back, as I am both a forthcoming capable-PC-owner -and- the only person who exists
- My eyes glazed over at the Xbox conference whenever they excitedly showed off anything involving multiplayer or shooting, but still, a pretty good slate of trailers all around. Standouts: Sekiro, Forza Horizon 4, Tales of Vesperia, Session, Tunic, Just Cause 4, and -possibly- Dying Light 2 and Cyberpunk 2077, depending on how cynical their stories end up being.
I was honestly expecting something relating to VR; I suppose they're saving that for the next iteration of Xbox hardware, if at all.
- Oh, also, I might be somewhat into humanoid videogame amphibian guys, but the Battletoads always have been and always will be exempt from this, and so my interest in their new game is absolutely nil [don’t-@-me emoji]
Bethesda
- Never a good sign if your hot new game concept has to be defended before you describe any of its genre-redeeming features.
"You'll never have to see a server browser!" "Don't worry, you CAN solo if you want!"
Right, but what options do I have if I want to have a peaceful co-op or PvE experience? Does 'solo' mean 'completely on a private instance', or just 'in a free-for-all game world without co-op partners'?
[EDIT: There are no offline or private-instance modes in Fallout 76.]
- "You can team up with other players to launch a nuclear weapon and completely wreck another player's settlement!"
Congrats, this sounds completely horrible in every single way. If there's no way to completely isolate myself from the possibility of it happening to me, then it doesn't matter how hopeful the story/setting are supposed to be; this is a game I will never ever buy.
"You don't lose anything when you die!"
Then what's the point of including nukes to begin with?
[EDIT: There are other non-murder-related reasons for firing off nukes. Still seems counterproductive, considering there are no such reasons in real life.]
- The Prey stuff looks good, but I was seriously going to engage with the moon DLC primarily as a peaceful space to stack objects in. It being a roguelite with a corruption meter that increases over time has completely destroyed that ambition -- not that the game was designed for it in the first place, but still.
The base game does have NG+ now, though, which is good to know for when I get it on PC. I'm hoping I can just restart with Leverage and Mobility III for efficiency's sake.
Square-Enix
- Just Cause 4 still looks hot, though whether it'll be playable at all on consoles has yet to be seen. One of the reasons I'm building the PC to begin with is to play through JC3; when I abandoned it on XbOne I was attempting to complete it using the grappling hook as my primary weapon for everything -- turning it from a standard shooter into a destructive puzzle game. (I only stopped because the framerates were far too low, which a XbOnX hardware upgrade wouldn't appreciably fix.)
[Addendum: I agree wholeheartedly with the backlash to the backlash against Kingdom Hearts. Sure, it’s silly and the greater lore is impenetrable from the outside, but you could say the same about, say, the Resident Evil series.]
Ubisoft
- I was waiting for them to put guns, explosions*, or forced randomness into the new Trials, and I'm beyond pleased that they didn't. The Crew 2 is a day-one for me (but that was a foregone conclusion; Phen's getting it, and the closed beta was amazing). Starlink, congrats on the thirst-follows, but feel free to call me when the -actual- man of my dreams is playable.
[*referring to explosions from grenade launchers or other acts of person-to-person violence, not environmental explosions from, say, colliding with red barrels. Important distinction to be made here.]
Sony
- One of the most brutally unpleasant press conferences I've ever watched, just from the overabundance of deeply intense and deliberately upsetting visuals; my recollection of it feels like an actual nightmare. That said, Death Stranding looks nice; so does the RE2 remake (though not for the over-the-top gore in what they displayed). I'm sure Spider-Man will be great as well, though as with other PS4 exclusives, I'll be viewing them in hour-long chunklets as my housemate plays through.
- [CW: upsetting feverdream:] I open my eyes to a field of wind-rippling flowers; a ponderous instrumental plays. There's a gun in my hand. I examine it; every detail is intricate, I inspect the chamber, check the magazine, only a few bullets left. The mechanical sounds pierce my eardrums. The sky is a magenta gradient from a bright white sun to the black vignettes at the edges of my vision. Off in the distance, there's a man with a katana, and reluctantly, I realize it's him or me.
Nintendo
- Really shouldn't have watched the Giant Bomb stream of this one. The problem, as I see it -- they showed plenty of games, but in criminally small portions, and just to make time for Smash tweaks. Still, a "one more thing" might have saved it, especially considering the things that had been rumored.
It still would have been nice to see some new system features; Twitch and Youtube clients, integration with more social networks. eShop music, perhaps?

2017 Games Review
I played a lot of really awesome games this year! Below are all my thoughts on them. The score out of ten is based solely on my level of enjoyment, so expect a lot of bias!
1/ Mass Effect 1 7/10
A good start to the ME series! I’ve been a fan of the Dragon Age games for a little while now, but I was put off by the shooter element in ME. However, it’s actually really fun to play! and the attention to characters and story in these games are the same reason I’ve always loved RPGs. This one is a little jankier in the controls to play than the later games but GAY SPACE ROMANCE. Driving the tank thing isn't much fun, but Shepard is great and I liked how you could play the character in different ways.
2/ Mass Effect 2 - 9/10
I ACTUALLY STARTED WITH THIS ONE. I played it late 2016 and liked it so much I bought the whole trilogy, which just happened to be on sale on ps3. Then I played it again, because I wanted to carry over my romance with my girl Liara into the third game. The way the sidequests are wrapped around the characters works so well WHY DON'T MORE GAMES DO THIS /looks at all the games where sidequests compose of random fetch quests for random people./ I especially liked how all your actions came into effect in the final mission, and ACTUALLY HAD REAL, DRASTIC EFFECT.
3/ Mass Effect 3 -9/10
I feel bad for this game cuz it's got such a bad rep because the ending is very much, ehhh. BUT THE REST OF THE GAME IS GREAT. The tension really gets amped up in this one, and you really feel like you're fighting against the odds for the sake of the universe. Also the citadel DLC is incredible.
4/ Tales of Berseria – 10/10
MAN this one comes up close on Graces' coattails for favourite Tales Of game. I should probably score this an 9 considering I had a few issues (the skits definitely go for quantity over quality in places) but fuck it cuz I can't think about this game without getting emotional about it and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it all year. Velvet is an incredible and refreshing lead and words cannot explain my love for Laphicet. I was hooked on the story right from the word go and honestly my friends were barely able to get me to leave the house during the weeks I was playing this, so.
5/ Horizon: Zero Dawn – 10/10
I felt so bereft after finishing Berseria I impulse bought this from the playstation store AND I DON'T REGRET IT AT ALL. If I had to recommend one game I've played this year it'd probably this one, because it's just so well-roundedly wonderful. Combat is fun, the open world is gorgeous and feels very much alive, Aloy is a fantastic lead, and damn, the story knocks it out the park. Once the plot moves past the warring tribes to the sci-fi stuff it goes from good to AMAZING. One of very few games where I ended up scouring the game for any and every data point. GO PLAY THIS.
6/ Nier Automata – 9/10
Everyone on my TL was playing and raving about this a few months back but I finally jumped on the bandwagon in the summer. The combat is ridiculously fun to play, and the world in this game is weird and bizzare and pretty damn sad, without managing to be dreary. For the first half of the game I had trouble empathising with 2B and 9S, and I got a bit bored replaying the same part of the game as 9S (2B is more fun to play as). Once the last section of the game started however it really kicked it into gear. I ended up liking and sympathising with the three leads by the end of the game, and it definitely started the waterworks a few times. A very unique feeling game.
7/ Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep – 5/10
I started off really liking this one. The combat is definitely the most fun I've had in a KH game, and feels a lot more fluid than in 1 and 2. I got pretty bored visiting the same Disney worlds, though, especially on my third playthrough with Aqua. I would have liked to have seen the last ending but I ended up getting burnt out.
8/ Nier Gestalt – 9.5/10
Whaaaaat, you say. I scored the old school Nier higher than the higher budget, more fluid, definitely more-fun-to-play sequel??? Why, you ask? Kaine, that's why.
I love the way Nier games play with different ways of telling a narrative. The original Nier I’d argue is the most successful with the way the story changes on replay (Automata does a similar thing with 9S, but I’d argue it doens’t work quite as well). I can’t say any more without spoilers to series newcomers, but I’ve never been so thrilled to feel so horrible.
I knocked off half a point because I had to push those damn boxes in the temple too many times. Hasn't Nier suffered enough???
9/ Child of Light- 8/10
A wonderful little game that oozes atmosphere and charm. All the characters speak in verse, and the soundtrack is outstanding. I loved whipping about the skies with Aurora, and the battle system is simple but addictive. It's only 12 hours long or so, and the ending feels a bit abrupt, but the rest is a delight.
10/ Stardew Valley 9/10
I'm unsure where to put this on my list, since I've been playing it for months and months, hahaha. Basically if you're a fan of Harvest Moon, this is Harvest Moon+++. It's all the things that got me addicted to the series, with a lot more freedom. You can design your own farm!! you can design your own farmer!! you can marry any of the bachelor or batchelorettes, irrespective of gender. My main complaint about this game is that I can't stop playing it :<
11) Final Fantasy XV – 7/10
I'm an old school FF fan and have been side eyeing this game ever since it came out. Got burnt by FF13 and was nervous about getting too excited about FF and being disappointed again. THIS WAS DEFINITELY BETTER THAN FF13 (don't ask me about that game, I will be very unfun and complain about everything). It's very different than previous FF's, but I enjoyed the open world and all the faffing around you could do in it. What I didn't expect was to be strapped in during chapter 9 and taken for Arydn's wild ride all the way to the end. It definitely could have been paced better, plenty of things could have been explained better, but I got so invested I played the final 5 chapters in about two days, so can I really complain? Also ily Lunafreya (when's your dlc coming out)

12/ Dishonoured 2
I've only played a few chapters of this game because it's been years since I played a proper stealth-based game and I die a lot, but the strength of the worldbuilding in this game really shines through in what little I've played. The world feels very alive, right down to all the NPCs on the street.
13/ Pokemon Sun
I played about 10 hours of this game when it came out, and then got a ps4 and forgot all about it RIP. On my second attempt I'm appreciating it a lot more! It's a very charming game. My favourite part is petting all my pokemon. <3
14/ Tales of Vesperia
This one is a second attempt, too! I've had real trouble connecting to the story in this game, and I still don't feel like I've completely got the hang of the battle system. But the characters are extremely likeable the game has a level of polish I've not noticed in any other Tales Of game. I definitely plan to finish it!

TV Reacts to Sony E3 2k17
Last year I made a compilation of my reactions to the sony conference and posted it to my tumblr, skipped tweeting live reactions to just script them all out. This year I'm going to do the same. These reactions are live, and prone to miss details, so that's just how we go.
Anyway speaking of last year, Sony's been doing good! The last few years for them have been solid shows, and I hope and pray that from those successes they've learned how to be consistant in delivering well. Here's hoping.
So I'm gonna start typing as the conference goes and we'll see where we go. Let's begin!
Just before it starts, I want to give a special shoutout to the Undertale for PS4 trailer. Cause wow.
HERE WE GO IT BEGINS
Bound? Why show Bound in the opening compilation? That game didn't do as well as I'd hoped it would. Hmm.
Repping that Abzu though, I love Abzu. Y'all play Abzu.
Last time sony had a big live orchestra. Same deal this time? Wow, okay, not an orchestra this time. Still classy as hell tho. Sony gotta rep that Class.
Good lord the waterfall y'all. Sony come on goddamn the light patterns? The Class. THE CLASS.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with games but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying it.
OKAY HERE COMES A VIDEOGAME. What's it gonna be? Uncharted? I'm seeing Uncharted maybe? Yeah that's the next Uncharted, the one with Chloe and the girl from UC4 I don't remember the name of. Volume's not working right unfortunately.
The volume not coming through to the screen properly is annoying but is anyone else hype for the girls' roadtrip of adventure? I sure am.
Probably gonna have to watch this trailer again with the actual game volume. I hope to god Sony fixes this issue quick so I can hear the other trailers.

Maaaan, I just finished Horizon yesterday (They just fixed the audio issue) and now the next (Game? Expansion?) is announced. I can't believe this. This rules. Horizon is one of my favourite games from this year, y'all gotta play that too.
Games can be s o violent. It's a surprise they show this so readily in these sorts of conferences but I guess it's fine. Gotta cover all angles, from saccharine to gritty, even if by including brutal stuff it filters out a younger audience. Guess the youngers don't have enough buying power to really justify marketing to them in a conference designed to generate buying hype.

He's not wrong about the past few months being amazing for games. HZD, Nioh, Res7, P5, I heard one other game but I couldn't tell what it was. Hope it was Nier Automata. Maybe not since it's not exclusive. Was Res7 exclusive?

Rabid cult following title? It is... MONSTER HUNTER. HELL YEAH I HEARD ABOUT THIS. Monster Hunter World, right? Tell me how this is gonna be.

Being distracted by other things, next game is a war thingy again, not my taste, I can chill at least. Ah it's a CoD. Yeah none of my business.
Next is VR Skyrim. That's cool. My twitch stream is buffering a lot though. Makes me sad.
Next up, from playful, is... It's still a VR game. The VR block started unannounced this year compared to last year, but then again last year was the announcement of the VR headset so that makes sense. That does mean this block of games isn't hugely interesting to me, I don't have a drive to get into VR yet. It'd need to take something earthshaking to do it.
The game is Star Child. Looks nice, I'm not doing VR at this point in my life.
Next from Supermassive games is... hmm, supermassive, what did they do? I should remember this. I don't. It's still PSVR. Is this the Batman VR? Arkham VR? No, just a VR experience.
Another FFXV thing. VR Fishing Games inside FFXV? Amazing. They really love putting games inside this videogame. Monster of the Deep, fantastic. The longer I put off playing XV the more content it gains.
Another Supermassive title... they are the VR people it seems. Shooty shooty gun gun has never been my style so I'm cool here. What's next?
Polyarc bringing us... a cute little rodent guy on an adventure. That's adorable. Looks like players control an orb that oversees this little'un, rather than the hero itself. Moss. Fascinating.
The sounds of water gave way to someone rowing a boat. This isn't a VR title, this is something OH YEAH there's God of War. I was waiting for it to arrive. Let's get another look into what this game is going to be.
Dad Simulator continues. Kratos trying to raise a kid. What a life. Oh... Fenrir? Is Kratos bringing Ragnarok?
Kratos climbing a cliff with the kid on his back was incredible. This game is going to be an experience.
WORLD SERPENT. Excellent. can't wait to fight that.
Early 2018, good lord, next year isn't going to be any more merciful than this one was.
I recognise that circle on the side of the head, but don't know from where. Looks to be Detroit Become Human though which is another game that I really don't find myself caring for. We'll let it be.
I can't tell if this glitching is because of the game itself or the video. Hmmm. Also this gosh dang buffering is not stopping, I'm definitely going to be watching past this stream's ending time for normal people.
Next is from Bungie. Destiny 2? Yeah definitely Destiny 2. Looks to be Cabal focused. I like the Cabal, so that's good stuff. Probably still won't go into it though. I had my fun time wtih the first Destiny but that was enough for me.
Looks like Sony got the exclusivity (for a period of time) deal again. Sucks to want to play this on xbox.

Apparently a big name is coming, it's... oh right, Spiderman. Insomniac Spiderman. Excellent.
Oh the video glitching is still here, maybe it's my stream catching up? Or video problems. W/e, doesn't stop me from understanding it. Spiderman's silent takedowns are pretty effective. Impressively so.
These moves are really something. Spiderman fighting like a boss. It's cool to see.
I wonder if spiderman automatically saves people from death? I can't see him actually killing humans, even bad guys.

Okay looks like that's it for the conference. It was... kinda quiet, ultimately. There's no real bombshells, nothing earthshaking, just solid quality and variety. I can't complain, definitely not. It just means Sony's gonna keep kicking goals as they are right now.
Games of note from this conference then? The Uncharted 4 Expansion/Next game/whatever it is, Horizion Zero Dawn Expansion/Next Game/Whatever, Monster Hunter Worlds, Shadow of the Colossus Remake, God of War and Spiderman. 6 things in this conference I'm very here for. Not too shabby, not at all. Thanks Sony!

E3 2017
Ah, E3 2017. Gaming’s version of Christmas. Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 for short) is an annual conference where all walks of life from the video games come together to discuss what’s coming up in the industry this year. Everyone attends: from software developers to retailers and everyone in between. A lot of hype happens around this conference as the big names in industry showcase what they have to offer for 2017.
Madden 18 Longshot
This year’s E3 lineup starts out strong with a gripping introduction to the campaign mode of Madden 18 Longshot. If you’ve been following any of my work for long, you’ll know I’m not into sports games. They just don’t do it for me. However, I have to say, that the story mode of going through the drama of what it would be life to be an American Football Star had me engrossed. House of Cards engrossed. Hook. Line. And Sinker. Well done, Madden, well done. You can check out the trailer yourself and let me know what you think about it in the comments below.
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Moving onto Star Wars Battlefront 2, you have to give credit where credit is due. CEO, Andrew Wilson admits from the get-go that they had a lot to learn from Star Wars Battlefront.
Two years ago we launched Star Wars Battlefront and we got a lot of feedback. A lot of it positive and a bunch of it constructive. That’s a uphamism for not as positive.
You know what? I respect that. I appreciate the fact that he can admit that there were a lot of frustrated fans and players from the rather hollow experience that Star Wars Battlefront was. Time will tell as to whether or not they have indeed learned their lessons from the first Battlefront and what will change in this iteration of the franchise.
While microtransactions are still a thing, there is a lot to be said for the studio electing to not have any paid DLC with Battlefront 2. They’re aware the goodwill they built up vanished when they charged what they did for what was essentially four maps. Let them try and earn it back I’d say. They’re aware the game will sell, but they will be under more pressure now to not take the mickey with it.
Battlefield 1
It’s always reassuring to know that Battlefield 1 will not be left out of the E3 love this year. As Andrew Gulotta, Producer of Battlefield 1 talks through the success of the franchise so far. Though, it did give way to some of the most awkward montages of games live streaming/YouTube experiences of playing BattleField 1 that I’ve ever seen.
It illustrates the power and where the influence for games are going these days (to the players and influencers). It hit home to me at that moment two equally powerful things. 1): They’re paying attention to the movement of gaming and where the hubs are. This is good. 2): They’re taking streamers and YouTubers content to present at E3. Yikes.
The reason why I say Yikes is because it makes me very self-conscious about how young the industry is, and yes, these moments are crucial to a gamers life. I don’t know why, but it showcased this way felt invasive in a way I can’t describe. Communities are built around these things, and generally, it’s not for the benefit of the publication of these communities.
Not that I feel that showing these communities to a wider audience isn’t useful or beneficial – but my fear is for the larger audiences of these conferences that it may just perpetuate the stereotypes of what we face already as gamers. I think that’s what I’m the most uncomfortable with. That and the lack of diversity in that clip. Those who were talking about the engagement in their communities were predominantly white men. I only saw one female, and I know a lot of women who play Battlefield, so this made me feel uneasy.
In the name of Tsar is the latest expansion coming to Battlefield one and it will contain eight new maps all based around the Russian Army around World War 1. There will also be a new competitive battlefield experience, based on the feedback that they’ve received from fans. Patrick Söderlund talks through what to expect in this update.
Later this year we are going to give you a new competitive Battelfield experience. We’ve heard you. You want a smaller, tighter experience focused on teamplay.
We can look forward to hearing more about it at Gamescom later on this year.
FIFA 18
FIFA is FIFA is FIFA. I know next to nothing about it, except that Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (no not that one) is on the cover of it and contributed his data to the game to help it be more realistic. For those in the eSports world of FIFA,  you’ll be pleased to know that EA is heavily investing in the scene and that more championships and leagues will be coming to your monitors soon.
Need for Speed: Payback
A bit of Burnout mixed in with some Horizon style open world with the regular additions of the Need for Speed franchise. So, what’s not to like? We’ll find out more about it soon in due time.
A Way Out
A Way Out is probably EA’s most exciting new title for this year’s E3. From the Studio that did Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. This Prison breakout game is one that should interest the wider community, giving some Last of Us/Uncharted vibes. Lots to be excited about given how stellar Brothers was. I’d be cautiously optimistic about what comes next for this studio!
There is a lot to digest from this E3 2017 presentation from EA. It shows a different side of the company, one that is painfully aware of itself and the market. Yet, hasn’t really hit the nail on the head in terms of tone and approach. That being said, there is a lot to be looking forward to in the next year with an impressive lineup of old and new titles.

I said that I’d wait to try the DLCs before working out how much of them I want to incorporate into the gameverse tale, and having played Dead Money I’m now inclined to think I want to incorporate more or less the whole thing - because it gives me a really handy post-game hook. Almost certainly messes with the canon timeline a bit, but I’m not out to write a novel any time soon so I’m handwaving it in the name of fun.
As noted, Larkin gets drawn into the Dead Money mess around the age of 23, spends a week or so suffering, and gets out with...maybe one gold bar, which allows for a comfortable few months in recompense. (A spending splurge that means she recovers well from her time amidst the Cloud, with a healthy portion left over as savings to be squirrelled away for emergencies.) She parts with Christine on loosely friendly terms; they didn’t know each other long enough or under relaxed enough circumstances to bond in any great depth, but after dragging someone’s dying ass up a staircase and collaborating on a murder plot with them, it’s only natural to hope their future endeavours go well.
At age 25-26, nine-ish months of game plot occur. Blah blah etc, Larkin eventually deposes House and establishes herself as a significant power in Vegas, with Veronica and Yes Man helping her out. The first six months that follow are barely bridled chaos, and even after that there is a hell of a lot to deal with; there are plenty of people who respect Larkin for being The Courier who pushed the NCR and Legion out, but no small number resent her for upending the status quo so dramatically (and nearly plunging the city into complete economic disaster in the process). There are of course also the handful who simply see her as easier pickings than the elusive House ever was.
And Larkin’s certainly more exposed than House, because she still insists on striking her deals and seeing things carried out in person. There’s a danger to it, but there’s equal danger in sitting too far out of the action; she knows how easy it to have vital information hidden or misconstrued by those with an agenda. It’s around this period that she upgrades her look a bit from the grubby wastelander half-angling to be underestimated. Still goes armed and armoured (because there’s presenting a confident image and then there’s asking to be stabbed), but it’s less of a chunky / patchwork mess, and more...something like the assassin suit in style, I suppose? A sleeker, meaner Larkin, balancing practicality against image, her background and experiences against life as a permanent part of the Strip.
Two-ish years after the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, Larkin’s progressed from significant power to dominant power, generally recognised as the head of what loose hierarchy exists, and had a few close calls. A wary eye is still kept on all horizons, with rumours out of both east and west speaking not of war, not yet, but enough hostility to settle uncomfortably between her shoulder-blades. She has alliances, but people are fickle; she has the Securitrons, but they’re known and familiar and far from invulnerable, and their numbers have been whittled down over the years. As she lounges at the top of the Lucky 38, she finds her thoughts drifting back to a misadventure from her youth and the unique tech she’d witnessed there.
At age 28, Larkin returns to the Sierra Madre with Veronica in tow - a Veronica who’s older and tireder and still trying to do what’s right. The former scribe has been loyal, has been valuable, and has been growing ever uneasier with her friend / sometimes lover and all that’s been done in the name of staying safe or making improvements or it’s not like this is how I want to play it, V, but it’s how it has to happen. After being cast aside by her old family, however, she can’t make herself abandon what small measure of it she has here. 
She’s taken completely by surprise by the face who greets them at the gates.
Larkin has long since guessed that Christine’s Elijah and Veronica’s Elijah are likely one and the same, and Veronica’s presence is at least partly grease on the wheels: Look at this! Old friends, all three of us. Who’d have thought? It works, too; nobody’s throwing themselves into anyone’s arms, but beneath the bewilderment and disbelief there’s real relief at finding out they’re both alive, and the faintest echoes of an old tenderness, a young love cut short but never forgotten. As for Larkin, well, Christine’s memories of Larkin are of a resourceful and reliable ally, and in the wild weirdness of the moment Veronica’s doubts are submerged again as they laugh together and shake heads over how they’ve all changed and oh, god, it’s really Christine? It makes for a warm welcome.
The good feeling lasts maybe a day or two as the warden shows them about and ample tales are traded. Then, on the second night, Larkin casually comes out and says that she’s here for the tech - for the holograms predominantly, but she’s not averse to the other bits and pieces that make the Sierra Madre such a fortress. She’s not after Elijah’s dream of hunching like a mad vulture over a dead zone, but the holograms alone would vastly improve her security.
Christine says no.
More than that, Veronica says no. She, more than Christine, knows what Larkin’s not saying, knows what kind of edge she’s seeking, has watched her walking slowly but steadily down a path that is becoming harder and harder to condone. And now - away from Vegas, away from the politicking and the danger and the Hard Choices That Must Be Made - she finds herself appealing to the young woman she befriended in the first place. Is this really necessary? Heck, do we even need to go back? It was just...it was so nice travelling out here, just the two of them (and a Securitron) like the old days, and Christine’s presence is reminding her of a time she was truly happy, which makes it easier to recognise that she’s not anymore. That she hasn’t been for a long time now.
Veronica’s reluctance only firms Christine’s stance that what’s in the Sierra Madre should stay in the Sierra Madre; likewise, Christine being present means Larkin can’t resort to her usual manipulative tactics to talk Veronica around from her misgivings. It means a long conversation that gets just close enough to ugly for Christine to grow wary - before Larkin finally smiles, holds up her hands, and says alright, very well, the point has been made. Can’t blame her for trying. Have you gotten much news from the south in your six years of solitude? Ah, well...
(And Veronica thinks, later, she should have known that moment for what it was, but she never really thought she’d end up on the other side of it.)
By the time they all part for bed, things aren’t quite as comfortable as they were before the disagreement, but Larkin waves off Veronica’s attempt to talk privately, claiming weariness and no hard feelings. Veronica hesitates, looks down the hallway a long moment before turning in...and then wakes during the night to find Larkin has attempted to lock both she and Christine in their rooms in order to take the tech by force.
What commences is three-ish days of cat-and-mousing in the deadly playground that is the Sierra Madre; no bomb collars this time at least, but an infinitely more personal fight. The longer it goes, the less Larkin holds back, and the ruthless resourcefulness that saw her turn the tables on Elijah has only been honed further since they last met. She is The Courier-
But Christine is the Warden. She has spent those same six years guarding this territory. She knows it inside and out, she taught Larkin half her skills with computers; the Cloud barely scathes her lungs, and the Ghost People shy away from her and those she protects. Eventually, with Veronica’s aid, she ends the bitter struggle over the Sierra Madre’s treasures by taking it out of the equation altogether - they rig a bomb that triggers a chemical reaction and ignites the Cloud like a funeral pyre that will burn for nearly a decade.
All three make it out before it goes; as deeply distressed as Veronica is by Larkin’s actions, as brutal a confirmation this has been that the woman she liked and loved (as a friend and, in a few precious moments, a little like something more) has gradually become no better than House, no better than Elijah - she doesn’t want her dead. She makes sure her old friend has a fair chance to escape.
Veronica and Christine flee together. Nothing has quite been rekindled between them yet; it’s been such a long time, and so much has happened. They’re quiet and hurting, leaving more things burning in Sierra Madre’s fires than tech and treasures. There’s a strange sense of lightness though, the slow awareness of freedom - from Christine’s vigil over the city of the dead, to Veronica’s dogged loyalty to a cause she’d long lost heart in - and for once the future is a total, enticing mystery.
Larkin limps back alone to New Vegas, humiliated and hating. To have lost a fight she started is a grievous blow to her pride, and the paranoiac edge that can in some ways be traced to the her first encounter with the Sierra Madre is now spiralling after the second - it doesn’t help that both Christine and Veronica are ex-Brotherhood, a group that Larkin has developed an increasingly personal grudge against. She genuinely believes that the fight isn’t finished here, that they’ll return all high and mighty to deny her Vegas as well, and even if they don’t someone else fucking will, there’s always someone who wants what she has.
She might not be wrong.
She will be ready.

E3 2017
Ah, E3 2017. Gaming’s version of Christmas. Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 for short) is an annual conference where all walks of life from the video games come together to discuss what’s coming up in the industry this year. Everyone attends: from software developers to retailers and everyone in between. A lot of hype happens around this conference as the big names in industry showcase what they have to offer for 2017.
Madden 18 Longshot
This year’s E3 lineup starts out strong with a gripping introduction to the campaign mode of Madden 18 Longshot. If you’ve been following any of my work for long, you’ll know I’m not into sports games. They just don’t do it for me. However, I have to say, that the story mode of going through the drama of what it would be life to be an American Football Star had me engrossed. House of Cards engrossed. Hook. Line. And Sinker. Well done, Madden, well done. You can check out the trailer yourself and let me know what you think about it in the comments below.
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Moving onto Star Wars Battlefront 2, you have to give credit where credit is due. CEO, Andrew Wilson admits from the get-go that they had a lot to learn from Star Wars Battlefront.
Two years ago we launched Star Wars Battlefront and we got a lot of feedback. A lot of it positive and a bunch of it constructive. That’s a uphamism for not as positive.
You know what? I respect that. I appreciate the fact that he can admit that there were a lot of frustrated fans and players from the rather hollow experience that Star Wars Battlefront was. Time will tell as to whether or not they have indeed learned their lessons from the first Battlefront and what will change in this iteration of the franchise.
While microtransactions are still a thing, there is a lot to be said for the studio electing to not have any paid DLC with Battlefront 2. They’re aware the goodwill they built up vanished when they charged what they did for what was essentially four maps. Let them try and earn it back I’d say. They’re aware the game will sell, but they will be under more pressure now to not take the mickey with it.
Battlefield 1
It’s always reassuring to know that Battlefield 1 will not be left out of the E3 love this year. As Andrew Gulotta, Producer of Battlefield 1 talks through the success of the franchise so far. Though, it did give way to some of the most awkward montages of games live streaming/YouTube experiences of playing BattleField 1 that I’ve ever seen.
It illustrates the power and where the influence for games are going these days (to the players and influencers). It hit home to me at that moment two equally powerful things. 1): They’re paying attention to the movement of gaming and where the hubs are. This is good. 2): They’re taking streamers and YouTubers content to present at E3. Yikes.
The reason why I say Yikes is because it makes me very self-conscious about how young the industry is, and yes, these moments are crucial to a gamers life. I don’t know why, but it showcased this way felt invasive in a way I can’t describe. Communities are built around these things, and generally, it’s not for the benefit of the publication of these communities.
Not that I feel that showing these communities to a wider audience isn’t useful or beneficial – but my fear is for the larger audiences of these conferences that it may just perpetuate the stereotypes of what we face already as gamers. I think that’s what I’m the most uncomfortable with. That and the lack of diversity in that clip. Those who were talking about the engagement in their communities were predominantly white men. I only saw one female, and I know a lot of women who play Battlefield, so this made me feel uneasy.
In the name of Tsar is the latest expansion coming to Battlefield one and it will contain eight new maps all based around the Russian Army around World War 1. There will also be a new competitive battlefield experience, based on the feedback that they’ve received from fans. Patrick Söderlund talks through what to expect in this update.
Later this year we are going to give you a new competitive Battelfield experience. We’ve heard you. You want a smaller, tighter experience focused on teamplay.
We can look forward to hearing more about it at Gamescom later on this year.
FIFA 18
FIFA is FIFA is FIFA. I know next to nothing about it, except that Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (no not that one) is on the cover of it and contributed his data to the game to help it be more realistic. For those in the eSports world of FIFA,  you’ll be pleased to know that EA is heavily investing in the scene and that more championships and leagues will be coming to your monitors soon.
Need for Speed: Payback
A bit of Burnout mixed in with some Horizon style open world with the regular additions of the Need for Speed franchise. So, what’s not to like? We’ll find out more about it soon in due time.
A Way Out
A Way Out is probably EA’s most exciting new title for this year’s E3. From the Studio that did Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. This Prison breakout game is one that should interest the wider community, giving some Last of Us/Uncharted vibes. Lots to be excited about given how stellar Brothers was. I’d be cautiously optimistic about what comes next for this studio!
There is a lot to digest from this E3 2017 presentation from EA. It shows a different side of the company, one that is painfully aware of itself and the market. Yet, hasn’t really hit the nail on the head regarding tone and approach. That being said, there is a lot to be looking forward to in the next year with an impressive lineup of old and new titles.

DualShockers Game of the Year 2018 Staff Lists — Tomas’ Top 10
I consider 2018 to be one of the best years for gaming in recent memory, even when compared to the lofty heights of 2017. No matter what genre you are a fan of, there was likely a great game for you to enjoy. I played a ton of games this year, both for review and for leisure, and the following 10 are the titles that stood out to me the most as favorites.
Keep in mind that I didn’t play every game that came out this year, so you won’t see titles like Octopath Traveler or Monster Hunter: World on my list. There were also a lot of great games that I would still recommend but didn’t make the list, including Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido, SoulCalibur VI, Dragon Quest XI, and Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. 
On that note, here are the 10 games I consider to be the best that 2018 had to offer:
10. Dragon Ball FighterZ
A Yamcha-only tournament mode exists…10/10.
2018 started very strong with a weekend that was home to two games present on this list, as well as Monster Hunter: World. One of the games to release on this weekend was Dragon Ball FighterZ, a 2D fighter from Arc System Works. While I’m not the biggest Dragon Ball fan, I couldn’t help but to be in awe of this game’s utterly gorgeous visuals that really make it feel like the anime has been brought to life and is playable in your hands.
From a gameplay standpoint, Dragon Ball FighterZ is still just as strong, being accessible to newcomers while still having the depth to satiate the hardcore community. After the disappointment that was Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, it was nice to kick off this year with a fast paced 3v3 fan-service-y fighter, albeit one from a different franchise. I’ve returned to it time and time again during 2018, and the fact that it still sticks out in my mind so vividly long after release really solidifies it as one of the best titles of 2018.

9. Sonic Mania Plus 
Ray the Flying Squirrel, my son. We are united once more…
Is it unfair that Sonic Mania has made my GOTY list two years in a row? Maybe, but that’s just a testament to how great the game is. I’m sure everyone and their mother has told you how this game, made by fans-turned-developers, brought the series back into a positive light for the first time in years upon its release due to its great visuals, music, and level design. Leaving it there would’ve been fine, but the developers knew the Sonic fanbase needed to wash Sonic Forces out of their minds and released some hefty DLC alongside a physical release.
Sonic Mania Plus added several quality of life improvements, slightly redesigned levels, and most importantly new playable characters with two of the series’ most notorious MIA characters: Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. Both of them add unique spins to the gameplay with their abilities. That, coupled with the redesigned Encore Mode, adds more content for die-hard fans to sink their teeth while also cementing Sonic Mania Plus as the best Sonic the Hedgehog game to date, in my eyes.

8. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Remember Geno? I sure do. 
Despite what I may have said just above, I’m still in awe of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s roster. If you had told me that Ridley, King K. Rool, and Pichu all would’ve been playable in a new Super Smash Bros. with characters like Piranha Plant and Joker from Persona 5 on the way, I wouldn’t have believed you, but here we are. I’ve always loved the Super Smash Bros. series, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate delivers pretty much everything that fans would want and then some.
I’ll admit that the reason Super Smash Bros. Ultimate isn’t higher on this list because I’ve spent comparatively spent less time with it than the other entries. That being said, I’m sure I’ll only fall in love with this title even more once I beat World of Light and unlock the last couple elusive characters. Now just add Geno, Sakurai, and we’ll talk about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate making it onto my 2019 GOTY list as well.

7. WarioWare Gold
The whole game is set-up for a poop joke…really!
If there’s one title on my list that won’t be getting much attention during this awards season, it’s WarioWare Gold. This series usually either begins or closes out a Nintendo system’s library, with this game doing the latter for the 3DS. WarioWare Gold was also actually quite refreshing as we hadn’t gotten a traditional microgames package like this in years. While it may be a bit too short for its own good, the microgames and various modes present are still a ton of fun to return to whenever I decide to boot up my 3DS.
It’s fairly clear that the 3DS is on its way out, with the only major releases on the horizon including ports and western releases of Japanese titles. Fortunately, WarioWare Gold was one last great original title to see the 3DS off with, topping off the library of what may be my favorite handheld of all time. While titles like WarioWare Gold and Ever Oasis that came later in the system’s lifespan may have been ignored for GOTY consideration, I’d still vehemently recommend them if you don’t mind dusting your 3DS off.

6. Tetris Effect
I can’t think of a joke for this game because it’s just so damn mesmerizing.
Those who know me are aware that I’m not into music at all. I didn’t pay enough attention to music-related things to notice that the Beatles’ name was a pun until this year. Despite all that, I was instantly hooked the first time I played Tetris Effect, and it wasn’t just because I’m a sucker for the classic puzzle game.
Tetris Effect engrossed me in a way no other title did this year and for reasons that are quite hard for me to put into words. The soundtrack was great and the way it blended its gameplay and visuals to create a euphoric gaming experience will make Tetris Effect a title that is seared into my brain for a long time, despite my milquetoast nature towards music. Also, the traditional Tetris is just really dang fun.

5. Valkyria Chronicles 4
Squad E, to the Beach! is one of the greatest DLC titles ever. I didn’t really have anywhere else to put that.
Valkyria Chronicles 4‘s existence makes me immensely happy, and the fact that it is one of 2018’s best games makes it all the better. This series’ unique take on the typical strategy game formula still feels as fresh as it did 10 years ago and the game’s amazing level design only bolsters its quality. While it may strip back some features from Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3, that allows it to be the most refined and focused entry in the series yet.
The story of Valkyria Chronicles 4 also managed to be the best in the series yet, focusing on a group of well-fleshed out characters on what seems like a suicide mission. While 2018 was home to some really great strategy games like Into the Breach, the engaging story, refined gameplay, and excellent level design helped cement Valkyria Chronicles 4 as my favorite strategy game this year, as well as one of my favorites overall. I hope SEGA continues to pay attention to this series, as it seems to have come back strong from a mainline series hiatus.

4. Celeste
From here on out, the games git gud. Like really good.
Celeste was a very special game for me this year. When I initially played the game for review pre-launch, I wasn’t expecting anything more than a tightly-designed platformer reminiscent of Super Meat Boy from the developers of Towerfall. What I ended up experiencing was something much more than that. Not only was it one of the most tightly-designed platformers I had ever played, it had an excellent soundtrack and masterfully wove themes regarding social anxiety into both the story and gameplay to make Celeste immensely relatable.
I couldn’t wait for this game to be exposed to the world and was happy to see it get such a warm reception out of others that same busy weekend as Dragon Ball FighterZ and Monster Hunter: World. Like all of the aforementioned games, Celeste has stuck with me since that first magical playthrough in January. I had a bigger connection to its story than any other this year and its tight gameplay design cements it as one of my favorite 2D platformers of this decade. The fact that Celeste is only at the #4 slot really speaks to the quality of the games released this year.

3. Red Dead Redemption 2
DualShockers gave this a 10 because the horse poops realistically. 
Despite the controversy surrounding it, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 remains a remarkable achievement for gaming. It features a world with a scarily thorough attention to detail throughout every inch of its enormous map, and tons of unique events and interactions to populate it. On top of that, gameplay has been vastly improved from the already-great original, and an amazing story highlighting the decline of the Wild West kept me captivated throughout with great characters like Arthur Morgan, Dutch Van der Linde, and Sadie Adler.
On a technical level, I would say Red Dead Redemption 2 is probably the most impressive game that has ever been made. While its pacing was a bit too slow in some parts, especially considering its lackluster fast travel systems, Red Dead Redemption 2‘s intricate design means I’ve only scratched the surface of what it has to offer, even after putting over 50 hours into it.

2. Marvel’s Spider-Man
I’m just going to plug Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse here. It’s really good too.
While Red Dead Redemption 2 my be a better game on a technical level, Marvel’s Spider-Man just clicked with me on so many other levels. I’ve had a long history with Spider-Man video games and even have a soft spot for some of the more mediocre titles like Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Fortunately, Insomniac truly delivered with this game on both the gameplay and story fronts.
The story, while surprisingly reserved with its villains, understood the character and world of Spider-Man so well that it has become the most definitive portrayal of the character since the early days of Ultimate Spider-Man. The open world design of Marvel’s Spider-Man may be a bit too formulaic for its own good, but the web-swinging and combat are more than satisfying enough to make up for that.
Physics-based web-swinging had been a heavily requested feature in Spider-Man games for year, so to see it implemented so well meant I could spend hours just swinging around (and I have). Combat also remains fun, mixing Batman: Arkham-style combat with Insomniac’s classic gadget setup to create a really fluid and enjoyable experience, even when you aren’t experiencing the great story or swinging. That being said, THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE.

1. God of War
Kratos is DualShockers’ honorary Best Husbando: just look at that face. 
Wow. Even with all the great games mentioned prior, Sony Santa Monica’s God of War has still managed to come out on top. With the exception of a few annoying combat sections, it’s a nearly flawless package that knocks it out of the park with an unexpectedly personal story, brutal yet satisfying gameplay, and stellar visuals to top it all off. There’s a reason it got our Game of the Year Award.
By making Kratos a damaged father attempting to connect with his son in order to prevent him from making the same mistakes, the developers managed to make a previously belligerent character sympathetic and surprisingly relatable. Combat was also fine-tuned to be more focused and engaging; not even the web-swinging in Marvel’s Spider Man came close to the satisfaction of pulling off a devastating kill with the Leviathan axe, or to throw it and have it come back instantly.
God of War has refined itself to the point where it might be the best game of the generation just because of how well it does everything it set out to do. I’d go as far to say it’s one of the best games ever made, and that twist ending has only left me wanting more. God of War 2 (or 5?) can’t come soon enough.

2017 has been a interesting year for gaming.  There have been incredible achievements like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Resident Evil 7: Bio-hazard and terrific disasters like Mass Effect Andromeda and Star Wars Battlefront 2. Unfortunately, due to the fact I only have a PS4 and that I am a scared little bitch, I didn’t play the aforementioned games and fortunately because I hate EA, I didn’t get to experience the bad side of gaming in 2017. So below, are my 5 favourite games I played in 2k17.
Honourable Mention – Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a single player experience that expertly deals with the themes of trauma, guilt and severe psychosis that are rarely ever dealt with in a video game. Through stunning visuals and a basis of Nordic and Celtic lore, Hellblade dives deep into the protagonist Senua and her mental instability on her journey into Helheim (hell) to rescue the soul of her dead lover from the goddess Hela. Fighting through Northman who appear out of nowhere as well as her own inner demons, Senua must solve puzzles and find lore stones to achieve her goal. The real hero of Hellblade is the sound design. While playing wearing headphones the inner voices that plague Senua also plague the player. The voices whirl around, sometimes catching you off guard, other times never ceasing to the point that once I actually yelled out “SHUT UP.” Immersive and incredible.

    5. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Released in August 2017, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a stand-alone DLC for Uncharted 4 that is based around the new partnership of Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross (both secondary characters from previous Uncharted games). It follows the new protagonists who are out seeking an artefact called The Tusk of Ganish in the Western Ghats of India and it has all of the action and gun fights that you NEED from an Uncharted game. Lost Legacy uses the same game engine as Uncharted 4 so the graphics and sound design are impeccable even to the point where Naughty Dog prompt you take photos when the landscape is next level beautiful. The only bad side is the gameplay is exactly the same as Uncharted 4 with only the real difference being there is no Nathan Drake. At 7-9 hours it has another fantastic narrative and if the series re-imagines itself in this way we are in for more incredible games.
4. HITMAN: The Complete First Season
Even though HITMAN was released episodically throughout 2015 and 2016, the complete edition was released in January 2017 so I am going to count it as a 2017 game. HITMAN is comprised of six chapters set in six separate locations each with its own unique look and feel, set of challenges and opportunities and many different ways to achieve your assassination goals. From Paris to Colorado, Italy to Japan the story missions and locations are chock-filled with content and endless replayability. In addition to the story missions, HITMAN has elusive target missions, (targets that disappear if you get caught or die) play-to-create contracts and a escalation mode that makes you follows a very strict set of instructions to complete your task. The crazy thing is that you get to play all 3 modes in each location which just shows the amount of detail the developers have put into each individual location. On top of that the graphics are incredible! IO Interactive with this game, has showed that they are now the new kings of episodic gaming.
  3. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is on this list for one reason; Gameplay. Due to a terrible story, the only reason to keep playing is because the gameplay is addictive. Wildlands has a massive open world set in Bolivia with 20 provinces each with at least one Cartel boss, hidden weapons, bases, skill points, enemies to interrogate and skills points used for progression. Each individual area is vastly different to the others so every region you go to you have to change and adapt your playing style. Jungle areas create different opportunities compared to the salt flats, some areas are so diverse you feel like you are playing another game. Unfortunately, there is no mission variety which hurts replayability and even though the game is designed as a co-op experience I only played offline due to my woeful Australian internet speed. The action was addictive and I loved wiping the cartel out of every location.
  2. Assassin’s Creed: Origins
Assassin’s Creed Origins is a complete re-imagining of the Assassin’s Creed series. It is a cross between Witcher 3 and Far Cry with a new upgrading and levelling system, a new mission structure and a complete reworking of the combat system. Ubisoft broke their cycle by taking 2 years to develop Origins and it shows with a massive open world, filled with side missions and location objectives and the new additions of chariot racing and a gladiator arena. The main protagonist Bayek is a charismatic lead in a story that explains the beginnings of the Assassin’s Brotherhood in the incredible setting of Ancient Egypt. Faithfully recreated and historically accurate, the design of Ancient Egypt is the hero of the game. From the River Nile to the largest city of Memphis, the world is immersive and addictive. Even after finishing the story (which will take at least 30 hours) you will still want to discover every location and find all the ancient tombs that are scattered over the MASSIVE MAP. If you like Ancient History this game is a must and the narrative will keep you hooked due to the interesting inclusions of some of history’s most important people.
  1. Horizon Zero Dawn
This game! After all the hype that practically destroyed No Mans Sky I stopped looking at any gaming hype and forums and really came into Horizon without knowing anything about it. From the first scene I was hooked and it practically consumed me, only Skyrim had consumed me so much and they both shared similar aspects. Crafting, a massive world, interesting mission structure but Horizon did things that Skyrim couldn’t. The story is set around Aloy, an orphaned outcast that has to navigate the world to understand her origins as well as the changing shifts in the world around her. Set in post-apocalyptic 31st century, the world is full of machines, different tribes and “ancient ruins” and has an interesting combination of nature and technology and preaches the real world technological worry of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In terms of gameplay, the game is stealth-centric but when shit hits the fan the combat is flawless. Between a combination of bow/arrow and traps set to damage the machine, thought has to be put in for each encounter otherwise you will die in 2 hits. The enemies are varied and each require a different tactic for the player to successful. Out of all the games I have mentioned, I cant wait to get my hands on Horizons DLC’s and that goes to show how well done everything is. Horizon Zero Dawn is as close to perfect that I have ever experienced.

  With 2017 nearly over, I list my favourite video games of the year. 2017 has been a interesting year for gaming.  There have been incredible achievements like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Resident Evil 7: Bio-hazard and terrific disasters like Mass Effect Andromeda and Star Wars Battlefront 2.

E3 2017
Ah, E3 2017. Gaming’s version of Christmas. Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 for short) is an annual conference where all walks of life from the video games come together to discuss what’s coming up in the industry this year. Everyone attends: from software developers to retailers and everyone in between. A lot of hype happens around this conference as the big names in industry showcase what they have to offer for 2017.
Madden 18 Longshot
This year’s E3 lineup starts out strong with a gripping introduction to the campaign mode of Madden 18 Longshot. If you’ve been following any of my work for long, you’ll know I’m not into sports games. They just don’t do it for me. However, I have to say, that the story mode of going through the drama of what it would be life to be an American Football Star had me engrossed. House of Cards engrossed. Hook. Line. And Sinker. Star Wars Battlefront 2
Moving onto Star Wars Battlefront 2, you have to give credit where credit is due. CEO, Andrew Wilson admits from the get-go that they had a lot to learn from Star Wars Battlefront.
Two years ago we launched Star Wars Battlefront and we got a lot of feedback. A lot of it positive and a bunch of it constructive. That’s a uphamism for not as positive.
You know what? I respect that. I appreciate the fact that he can admit that there were a lot of frustrated fans and players from the rather hollow experience that Star Wars Battlefront was. Time will tell as to whether or not they have indeed learned their lessons from the first Battlefront and what will change in this iteration of the franchise.
While microtransactions are still a thing, there is a lot to be said for the studio electing to not have any paid DLC with Battlefront 2. They’re aware the goodwill they built up vanished when they charged what they did for what was essentially four maps. Let them try and earn it back I’d say. They’re aware the game will sell, but they will be under more pressure now to not take the mickey with it.
Battlefield 1
It’s always reassuring to know that Battlefield 1 will not be left out of the E3 love this year. As Andrew Gulotta, Producer of Battlefield 1 talks through the success of the franchise so far. Though, it did give way to some of the most awkward montages of games live streaming/YouTube experiences of playing BattleField 1 that I’ve ever seen.
It illustrates the power and where the influence for games are going these days (to the players and influencers). It hit home to me at that moment two equally powerful things. 1): They’re paying attention to the movement of gaming and where the hubs are. This is good. 2): They’re taking streamers and YouTubers content to present at E3. Yikes.
The reason why I say Yikes is because it makes me very self-conscious about how young the industry is, and yes, these moments are crucial to a gamers life. I don’t know why, but it showcased this way felt invasive in a way I can’t describe. Communities are built around these things, and generally, it’s not for the benefit of the publication of these communities.
Not that I feel that showing these communities to a wider audience isn’t useful or beneficial – but my fear is for the larger audiences of these conferences that it may just perpetuate the stereotypes of what we face already as gamers. I think that’s what I’m the most uncomfortable with. That and the lack of diversity in that clip. Those who were talking about the engagement in their communities were predominantly white men. I only saw one female, and I know a lot of women who play Battlefield, so this made me feel uneasy.
In the name of Tsar is the latest expansion coming to Battlefield one and it will contain eight new maps all based around the Russian Army around World War 1. There will also be a new competitive battlefield experience, based on the feedback that they’ve received from fans. Patrick Söderlund talks through what to expect in this update.
Later this year we are going to give you a new competitive Battelfield experience. We’ve heard you. You want a smaller, tighter experience focused on teamplay.
We can look forward to hearing more about it at Gamescom later on this year.
FIFA 18
FIFA is FIFA is FIFA. I know next to nothing about it, except that Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (no not that one) is on the cover of it and contributed his data to the game to help it be more realistic. For those in the eSports world of FIFA,  you’ll be pleased to know that EA is heavily investing in the scene and that more championships and leagues will be coming to your monitors soon.
Need for Speed: Payback
A bit of Burnout mixed in with some Horizon style open world with the regular additions of the Need for Speed franchise. So, what’s not to like? We’ll find out more about it soon in due time.
A Way Out
A Way Out is probably EA’s most exciting new title for this year’s E3. From the Studio that did Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. This Prison breakout game is one that should interest the wider community, giving some Last of Us/Uncharted vibes. Lots to be excited about given how stellar Brothers was. I’d be cautiously optimistic about what comes next for this studio!
There is a lot to digest from this E3 2017 presentation from EA. It shows a different side of the company, one that is painfully aware of itself and the market. Yet, hasn’t really hit the nail on the head regarding tone and approach. That being said, there is a lot to be looking forward to in the next year with an impressive lineup of old and new titles.
