Manasvini Supports Women's Empowerment Event in Surrey

A not-for-profit society HWCRS has come together with DHOT Group and Honeybae Association to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 17 at the Khanna Banquet Hall, 11267 125a St #201, Surrey BC V3V 8C5. The event is christened as “Unique You”. Meanwhile, Manasvini Hindi Cultural Society has partnered with a number of not-for-profit organisations to support this unique event. A women’s association, Manasvini is created to celebrate the rich Indian cultural heritage and Hindi literature with the South Asian diaspora community. A variety of cultural entertainment is planned along with a fashion ramp walk on the occasion.  The organisers have invited women and families from various diverse communities to celebrate this event together along with the South Asian community who will be in attendance. The International Women's Day theme set by the UN this year is 'Embrace Equity'. The event has been planned as a multicultural Family Gala. Hundreds of  attendees are expected to be present including prominent women from various professions and other dignitaries. The Indian Diaspora is spread far and wide, across all continents. It is the largest diaspora in the world with over 18 million Indians residing outside of India, with Southern Africa holding the largest population of Indians. There are many reasons as to why the diaspora is so large, Southern Africa’s history is rather unique as many Indians were shipped over during the Indian-Dutch slave trade, throughout this process, many cultural traditions were lost and many new ones were created. I want to use this platform to create a space for the Indian community residing within Africa. I would also like for this blog to be a celebration of my own heritage, my family history and a tribute to the many Indians that persevered in the face of systemic racism, class divides and cultural re-establishment. 

Throughout this blog, I hope to create a community space where anyone a part of the diaspora can come and connect, share their own personal stories and join me in celebrating the history of Indian Africans. I plan to explore social issues experienced by the community looking into issues of racism, sexism, class divide and the overall experience of being a part of the diaspora.
