south asian music recs pt 1
ok. i might just be very indian but i have barely seen any south asian independent music (NO i'm not counting coke studio), since india's music runs on 1) filmi and 2) coke studio (which again. not counting that as independent music. fuck coke studio). and 1 gets boring while 2. well. the boycotts. also adding that since i have a massive preference for rock music, this post will be primarily focusing on that. sorry about that.
note: this list might also have more of india than for other countries bc i'm indian and thus have more experience with indian music. very fucked up language order to keep you on your toes.
India:
Motherjane (genre: rock; they have a lot of carnatic influences as well): formed in 1996, based in kochi. they sing in english. i would recommend listening to chasing the sun, jihad, and soul corporations
Avial (genre: alternative rock): formed in 2003, based in thiruvanandapuram. they sing in malayalam. i would recommend chekele, aadu pambe, nada nada
Pineapple Express (genre: multi. mixes rock, pop, carnatic, experimental, electronic, progressive): formed in 2016, multillingual, no set place they're based in. i would recommend anthem, jazbaat, dil se (yes That dil se. their cover slaps.)
Agam (genre: carnatic rock): formed in 2003, based primarily in bangalore though many members are from kerala. multillingual. i would recommend rangapura vihara, koothu over coffee, the celestial nymph (manassi dussaham)

So, as a preteen during the noughts and knowing DoReMi was dubbed by 4Kids at the time, what's the series like? Did I miss out?
I’m in kind of a similar boat as you. In 2007-08 Doremi aired on Jetix in India and was dubbed in Hindi. The Hindi dub not only had horrible voice acting but very obviously put the script through Google translate (idk if it even existed in 07 though), so none of the dialogue made any sense. This killed the show’s chances in India pretty much instantly.
I heard of the 4Kids dub as well and while it was also cringe, it was much less cringe than whatever Jetix did to Doremi over here. At least they tried to culturally translate the show to America and the songs are decent.
Only after the show got cancelled here, I found the original version on YouTube with fansubs and that changed my opinion completely. Doremi has very well written characters and dialogue (Mamoru Hosoda was on the writing staff and BOY does it show), and tackles very serious issues for children’s shows.
So yes, go check out the original subbed version or even the French dub (because that was a cultural translation that preserved the original script).

udayaravichandrika is a such a good example of an oxymoron! (udayaravichandrika is a carnatic raga btw). like udayaravi means rising sun while chandrika means moonlight

Music is always soothing to the ears and calming too some, enjoyment to some, a helping hand or support to those who are in sorrows. If I've to focus on a particular form on Indian music i would like to focus on classical among the other types like rock and pop. The two types of Indian classical music is Carnatic and Hindustani music. The seven notes known as the Sapta Swara or Sapta Sur is the key in Indian classical music. These are also known as the fundamentals of raga. Carnatic music originated in South India. It is similar to the Hindustani music, it is melodic with improvised variations. The main emphasis is on the vocals as the most compositions are written to be sung even if there is the use of instruments. Chennai is believed to be the hub of music in India and also holds the world's largest cultural event which is eight-week-long. The tradition of Hindustani music began around the Vedic times. It is also known as the North Indian classical music or shastriya Sangeetha. There were gradual modifications over the years in the music and had become what it is now.
