Scott Morgan was a film buff. During our Goan odyssey we had several movie dates which offered an escape from the reality of his illness. When Scott learned his beloved niece got accepted into USC film school, he was over-the-moon with excitement for her. Today, I am delighted to share with you Mercedes Morgan’s letter to me about how she recently ended up in Goa retracing some of her uncle’s…

The Darjeeling Limited (2007, Wes Anderson)
26/02/2024
The Darjeeling Limited is a 2007 film directed by Wes Anderson, written by Anderson himself together with Roman Coppola and actor Jason Schwartzman.
The film, preceded by the short film Hotel Chevalier, with which it was distributed, was presented in competition at the 64th Venice International Film Festival. The film is a comedy with dramatic overtones, set in India mainly in the Rajasthan region, starring the three Whitman brothers, Francis (Owen Wilson), Peter (Adrien Brody) and Jack (Jason Schwartzman).
Many scenes in the film - including the Himalayan ones - were not shot in Darjeeling area. The filming locations are practically all located in the state of Rajasthan, in the towns of Jodhpur and Udaipur.
On the other hand, there is a tourist train, the "Toy Train", which passes through Darjeeling, administered by the Darjeeling Himalayan company.
There are four characters in the film who only appear in cameos: Bill Murray, Irrfan Khan, Natalie Portman and Camilla Rutherford. In the cameo in which Bill Murray appears, he is seen chasing the train, which is leaving without being able to reach him, like the brothers do. A mystery is linked to his character: is he the ghost of the deceased father of the three or is it someone else?
Towards the end of the film there is a cameo in which Natalie Portman appears for about 8 seconds, while the camera moves from one carriage of the train to another. She finds herself in a yellow room identical to the one in the Hotel Chevalier from the prequel.

A Spotlight on the Significance of Short Films in the Film Festival
Despite the progress we see in the film industry today, short films remain underrated. The amount of value and importance that short films deserve is still not up to the mark. Most of the renowned filmmakers started off their journey in the film industry by creating short films originally. There are plenty of reasons why short films are of great importance, both for the filmmakers and the audiences.
What are short films?
Short films are films that are generally less than 30 minutes in duration but successfully deliver the important message that it wants to send across, that too subtly. The short films particularly focus on the main purpose of the story and eliminate the unnecessary add-ons unlike in the mainstream movies. Short films make for a great show for audiences who do not want to waste hours understanding the plot and the characters.
Tumblr media
Short films are all about great storytelling and direction. There’s a reason why short films have gained a dedicated audience over the decades and are getting much more important today as compared to earlier times. Most Film Fare Festivals have been continuously highlighting the value of short films by screening such films at festivals.
Significance of short films for filmmakers
There are numerous reasons why short films hold great importance for every filmmaker and the audience.
Helps aspiring filmmakers understand their skills
Short films have been a significant part of any filmmaker’s journey to success. Most filmmakers initially make short films to assess their own skills and creativity and then work on bigger projects. Imagine making a full-fledged long film of two or more hours which might not even turn out to be the way you want it to be. That will be a pure waste of a lot of your time and effort. Filmmakers can not only analyze different approaches to making a powerful film but also understand their audiences and their preferences.
They are budget-friendly
Aspiring filmmakers who lack time, money, and resources can opt for creating a short film rather than a complete hours-long movie. A filmmaker can save a lot of time, effort, money, and other resources by producing a short film. Short films are anyway low-budgeted films and require less time to produce than feature films. You can work with experienced actors, writers, and other film crew at much lower costs.
Pushes the limit of the filmmakers
Short films are for experimenting and pushing the limits. Creating a short film requires a different kind of art and skillset. The directors and producers can get as creative and as imaginative as they want to create a short film that says more in less. Making films that leave an impact on the audiences and not just end up being a mere source of entertainment can be the changemaker for the filmmakers.
How short films play a big role in film festivals
The International Film Festivals are continuously working towards throwing light on the unique and powerful short films that would have otherwise stayed hidden from global audiences. These film festivals have a wider, in fact, global reach which makes them a crucial platform for promoting deserving films and highlighting the work of such skilled filmmakers.
By screening short films at the festival, filmmakers can get much-needed exposure and genuine feedback from the audiences and the critics present at the festival. After understanding the shortcomings (if any) and the valuable suggestions received at the festival, filmmakers can work towards improving their work and producing something more amazing in the future.
Film festivals like JFF are known for showcasing short films from various filmmakers who come from different parts of the world. This gives filmmakers from across the world, a chance to get the recognition they are lacking by presenting their work in front of diverse audiences.
Film festivals, being a vital medium for promoting films and artists, help the filmmakers who screen their short films at the festival to get distribution offers. Unlike in the case of feature films, there isn’t pressure to get a distribution deal for your “short film” and thus discussing and sharing about the films and organically getting the offers is one of the advantages that the short films at the film festivals provide to the filmmakers.
The filmmakers can showcase their range by getting a chance to showcase their short films at the film festival. A short film doesn't have a particular genre or limitations, artists can touch any topic and work their magic on it. Showing unique content during the festival, helps the filmmakers to grab the attention of established artists and valued people from the industry.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
Film festivals and short films hold valuable importance for one another. While film festivals are prestigious events that encourage new talents and honor deserving artists, this becomes even more possible due to the screening of short films by these artists. The storytelling and direction in a short film require the utmost talent and a vision to create something that reaches the hearts and minds of the people. Film festivals like JFFare a prime example of how short films and film festivals together are so compelling for filmmakers and as well as audiences.

Lion (2016, Garth Davis)
20/11/2023
Lion is a 2016 film directed by Garth Davis.
Based on the memoir A Long Way Home, the film tells the true story of Saroo Brierley who is played by Dev Patel. The cast also includes Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman. The film had its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, taking 2nd place in the Audience Award.
Khandwa, central India, 1986 - Saroo, five years old, second son of a very poor family, who survives with his older brother Guddu by collecting waste metals, asks the other to be able to work at night in a station near their home village. In search of his brother, the child mistakenly boards a deserted train that leaves and does not stop, taking him to Calcutta, about 1600 kilometers away.
Lost in the chaotic metropolis, not speaking the local Bengali language, Saroo survives on the streets. Hosted by people of ill repute, he manages to escape, only to be noticed by a young employee who speaks his Hindi language and who takes him to a police station so that, by publishing his photo in the newspapers, someone can recognize him. Saroo leaves for Hobart in Tasmania, where he grows up and becomes an adult.
At the age of 27, Saroo is a university student in Melbourne, with numerous Indian friends and loved ones, but he has not forgotten his roots and his family, for which he feels a sense of guilt due to his disappearance. At his girlfriend's insistence, the young man begins researching through Google Earth, desperately searching for his home village based on his fading memories, until he recognizes from a satellite image what appears to be the starting station.
Filming began in January 2015 in Calcutta, India, and continued in mid-April, in Australia, in the cities of Melbourne and Hobart.
The film had its world premiere on 10 September 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival and subsequently at the London Film Festival and the Rome Film Festival. It was released in US cinemas on 25 November 2016 by The Weinstein Company, while distribution began in Australia on 19 January 2017, and in Italy it was released on 22 December 2016.
For the film Sia composed the song Never Give Up, released as a promotional single.
The score was composed by Dustin O'Happellon and Hauschka and was nominated for Best Original Score at the 2017 Oscars.

Suchitra Sen's impending loss is tearing my heart out. How can Bengali cinema's greatest female icon lose out in round 2 itself? I won't let her go down without a fight!
Suchitra Sen entered films as a married woman and a mother which was highly unusual for not just Bengali cinema, but for the whole of Indian cinema as well. In an age when actresses tried their best to hide the fact that they were married and had children, Suchitra Sen was not afraid to swim against the tide.
Hailing from erstwhile East Bengal (present day Bangladesh) she left with her family for present day West Bengal in India following Partition in 1947 and she had to adapt to the dialect and pronunciations used in Bengali films made in India.
Many talk about Suchitra Sen's quiet dignity on screen, but summing it up so briefly does her injustice. She played melodramatic without resorting to melodramatic acting. Her screen presence was so heartbreakingly real and didn't have the theatrical nature that was associated with Indian cinema of that era.
Starting from the 1950s, Bengali rom coms were all Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar. They had incredible chemistry on screen. But Suchitra Sen was determined to prove that she was not just Uttma Kumar's other half on screen but a capable and frankly good actress in her own right. So, in the 1960s she went on to do many women centric films opposite other lead actors (such as Bikash Roy and Soumitra Chatterjee), thus giving us some gems of Bengali cinema like Uttar Falguni (1963) and Saat Pake Bandha (1963), the latter won her the best actress award at the Moscow International Film Festival making her one of the first Indian actresses to win an International award.
In Uttar Falguni (1963), she plays a woman who flees an abusive marriage and becomes a courtesan to support her daughter. In Saat Pake Bandha (1963), she plays a young woman whose marriage disintegrates due to her mother's interference. In both these films, Sen doesn't need words, her loss, her pain, her anger are all etched on her face in different moments but never does it fall to melodramatic theatrics.
In Devdas (1955), Bimal Roy's classic production of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's celebrated novel, she plays the role of Paro and is in my opinion the best of the many Paro's I've seen on screen in adaptations ranging from 1936 to 2002 and beyond.
In Aandhi (1975), she played a politician estranged from her husband dealing with a clash of love and career.
Suchitra Sen was a classic Bengali beauty and an icon, not just of Bengal but of India as a whole
