Young, Black and Creative in California: Malaysia Allen
The choice to abandon the comfort of a typical nine-to-five career to pursue your own creativity takes immense courage in oneself. Each day, people walk around with ideas and dreams that they will never share with others because they doubt their own ability to achieve all that they want. This reality is even more prevalent for young minorities who are seldom exposed to the arts, and almost never told that their creativity can be worth something.
In this two-article series, Best Coast will interview several young, black creatives from California to highlight their struggles and accomplishments, in an effort to show that creativity can stem from all backgrounds.

How long have you been pursuing modeling?
I have been pursuing modeling since my freshman year of high school, but I did not take it seriously until I got to college. In college I was influenced by other older, female black models who pushed me to do modeling. Now, I am part of Howard University Elite Models
What inspired you to start pursuing your creative passions?
A lot of people growing up told me that I had the looks to model, but I never saw that in myself. It took some time for me to get comfortable in my own skin and to recognize my own beauty. I used to put these sticky note cards on my mirror to give me daily reminders of my own beauty. I also started looking at different runway shows, including Naomi Campbell and Chanel Iman, and saw how confident they were, and that gave me faith and a passion to show who I am, too.
What has been your greatest creative accomplishment, to date, and how were you able to accomplish this?
Modeling for Twiley (twileytm.com). The young black woman who owns that company has been in my life since I was eight years old. She asked me to model for her when I got to college, but I didn’t know if I could do that. I came home during summer break and she just grabbed me and I modeled for her that night.
What has been your hardest creative setback, to date, and how did you overcome this obstacle?
Just degrading myself day by day. I was actually one of those people who would get picked on by boys who were older than me. It really just made my confidence so low. I remember praying and asking God to give me confidence and to make me beautiful both inside and out. Now I just hope that my inner and outer beauty will continue to be shown with everything that I do.
How do you see yourself and your craft evolving in the next five years?
I do not want to be labeled as just an Instagram model. I even see myself modeling for Rihanna’s Fenty one day. But I know I will have to work on myself and crafting my image. I want to be a print model alongside people like Duckie Thot and Slick Woods. Anything I put my mind to, I’m going to do it. But I am also interested in nursing, so I can also see myself doing both modeling and nursing.
