I'm going to make a video post explaining this better, but I'd like to say that i'm 95 percent sure that Smalltown boy will play in s5 on an important scene with Mike Wheeler. It could be him having flashbacks about will or finally accepting he loves him or something. It's happened in other shows too! I'll give examples;

UK skins, gen2- It plays with a scene where a character called Emily who's a lesbian and isn't accepted by her mum, is crying at a bus stop, away from home, which also resonates with the lyrics. Her s/o had a lot of internalised homophobia.

Netflix- Elite, season6 ep 2- The character Cruiz (Ivans dad) who's a famous soccer player finally comes out to the public and makes a statement, having finally accepted that he is gay, and he too struggled with his identity, in deep denial. That's when the song plays.

It plays on the show 'it's a sin'.

So given the meaning of the song, and history of shows it's been used on in the media, I don't see why it wouldn't play for Mike, especially since it's number 1 on his spotify playlist! It fits him so well!
