Beneath the Mask from Persona 5 is a song about Autism
The first verse: Where have you been? /Been searching all along /Came facing twilight on and on /Without a clue /Without a sign /Without grasping yet /The real question to be asked Where have I been?
This is about growing up autistic but being undiagnosed. There's something different about you. Something weird. You know this, everyone knows this, but you don't know exactly what. "Came facing twilight on and on [...] Without grasping yet, The real question to be asked."
The first chorus: I'm a shapeshifter /At Poe's masquerade /Hiding both face and mind /All free for you to draw /I'm a shapeshifter /What else should I be? /Please don't take off my mask /Revealing dark
Here the concept of masking is introduced. Autistic masking is when autistic people hide their autistic traits to try to pass as neurotypical. It involves suppressing one's authentic self in order to more easily fit into society. It provides security at the cost of connection. As you can imagine, this has negative mental health outcomes. "Hiding both face and mind, All free for you to draw." This line shows us that the author is masking to fit in with society. "Please don't take off my mask, Revealing dark." This shows that the author is scared of unmasking being their authentic self.
The second verse: Moments of calm /Nothing left to be found /A mirror right in front of me /That's where I find /An empty glass /Reflecting the sad truth /It's telling words not to be told /I need the mask
This verse could represent the author discovering that they're autistic. Another interpretation is that they discover that they won't be accepted by society if they don't mask.
The second chorus: I'm a shapeshifter /At Poe's masquerade /Hiding both face and mind /All free for you to draw /I'm a shapeshifter /Chained down to my core /Please don't take off my mask /My place to hide
The author feels trapped in this verse. "Chained down to my core."
The third verse: I can't tell you /How to see me /Just a cage of bones /There's nothing inside /Will it unleash me? /Burning down the walls /Is there a way /For me to break?
In this verse, the author really wants to break free and be their authentic self, wearing the mask has taken its toll. But they're struggling to unmask. "Will it unleash me? Burning down the walls." The author is worried that being themselves would ruin their life and relationships but also acknowledges the possibility that things could get better. "Burning down the walls" could mean destroying the things they've built so far, or it could mean tearing down the barriers between them and others.
The third chorus: I'm a shapeshifter /At Poe's masquerade /Hiding both face and mind /All free for you to draw /I'm a shapeshifter /Have no face to show /Please don't take off my mask /My disguise
The author has masked for so long, created so many different personalities for different people that they don't know who they really are any more. "I'm a shapeshifter, Have no face to show."

So this was definitely one I debated back and forth on the colors for a lot longer than I wanted. I eventually caved and decided it still technically followed the rule where I only used three colors, despite not being mono-color. I definitely don't regret doing this though, as I think anyone would forgive me when it came to this game's unique style. Plus, Persona 5 is all about rebellious youth, so this one standing out is thematically appropriate.

sumire propaganda: though her entire story is very stranger-aligned, perhaps the aspect that makes her most suited for the role of the avatar is that she deliberately chose to maintain the role as kasumi, even when confronted with the truth of her identity. time and time again, she is told to "find her true self", and she deliberately avoids that in order to keep up the false pretenses of her identity. also, it takes over 100 hours of gameplay for it to be revealed that she's Not kasumi — that is a hefty amount of time to spend with a character who is concealing their true identity. persona 5 royal as a whole has a running theme of wearing masks (both literally and figuratively) to disguise one's true nature from society — lyrics such as "I'm a shapeshifter / At Poe's Masquerade / Hiding both face and mind / All free for you to draw / I'm a shapeshifter / What else should I be? / Please don't take off my mask / Revealing dark" and "A mirror right in front of me / That's where I find / An empty glass / Reflecting the sad truth / It's telling words not to be told / I need the mask" are found in "beneath the mask", one of the primary musical themes of the game — which aligns very well with the stranger's circus and the masks used

Joker's hard to talk about because he's... not anything. I love his design and his mannerisms and thats all there Is to like about a silent protagonist. I'm fond of the image of him I created in my head and some of the trends in how fanfics tend to depict him. I appreciate that because the persona writers simply did not write him he is the only character free from the persona writers' bullshit. i hesitate to say persona would be better if the protagonist wasn't silent because of this. In the blank space where the character you play as in persona 5 should be like in the outlines of his context and the small cues about him i think there's fucking interesting space to elaborate on and picture a good character. lyrics of shapeshifter (??? the poes masquerade song) are interesting in the context of a silent protagonist thats really cool, the way Arsene talks to him is interesting that's actually the most direct character we get on him right because Arsene is a facet of Joker with real set in stone dialog and what he says is aren't you tired of being nice don't you want to go apeshit. ravage them. i like akira in my head and hey i like elaborating on characters in fic and a blank one makes a very obvious space to do that so i guess thats one benefit of him not talking
they are more interesting offscreen than in ztd. largely it makes luna way cooler her being created in the image of a dead woman who she exists partly to kinda sorta bring back to life/be replaced by in a better world is sick. the secret password in the gaulem bay being "reminescence" is sad with Diana in mind. i think she is a cool backdrop of context to VLR the rhizome does get sadder going through it with her in mind. there's a lot of weird stuff to explore with how like. sigma can only meet her after she already knows him, she can only meet sigma after he already knows her. she falls in love with a dude and then he gets really essentially replaced by a very different 40 years younger version of himself and she is just kinda bound to be his anchor assistant
but whats actually in the game. i barely remember a thing about diana ever other than the happiness is closer than you think scene which is good and the two parts where delta talks to her. like i just cannot tell you much about diana she leaves very little impression on me. and ztd sigma well he doesnt really either... theyre fine? their end is one of the better parts of ztd. or at least one of the more memorable. Like most of ztd there's some theoretically interesting concepts you can expand on in fic etc but the game itself doesnt get and/or utilize the space to go into it much itself.
