Having some feelings this evening about Frodo’s reaction to people around him being corrupted by desire for the One Ring. How generally devoid it is of any blame placed on that person, and how he instead treats it as a tragedy to spare others from by distancing himself.
It’s a big deal in the latter books that Frodo wants to show Sméagol kindness if possible because things have progressed so far that Frodo can recognize his own experience in him. But what’s really making me stare at a wall right now are Frodo’s early days reactions even before the personal identification is as strong.
Basically, I can’t stop thinking about how deeply Frodo’s reaction to that last encounter with Boromir is informed by the fact that the first person to ever try and take the ring from Frodo was actually Bilbo. The fact that the first person Frodo ever saw corrupted to that point, even for a moment, was the kind, clever, caring uncle who adopted and taught him, and who Frodo thinks the world of.
Just thinking about the personal relationship Frodo had with the very first person he saw the Ring affect and how fundamentally that set the tone for his understanding of it for the entirety of the journey.

WOOO NEW ISSUE!! i began reading this earlier, but couldn’t finish due to me rereading what i had just read and focusing on the pictures!!! so yeah, finally finished it, and GRRR GOOD ISSUE
first off, throws thrasher in the cootstorm pit too, they can share. no transphobic kitties allowed (obviously not literally, but i love how like.. natural it is? it’s just cormorantpaw’s life and what he’s been raised to think). egrettail should deck him
also egrettail!!!!!! favorite kitty therapist!!!! i assume maybe asphodelpaw asked about her being aroace, maybe brought on after daffodil was like “oh!! ur just like me and asphodelpw!!!” to pinepaw, and that made her think “wait am i into men even?” but. yeah. she just wants to help and she’s such a sweetie
SEVEN. SILVERS. SHE’S MADE IT!!! SHE’S IN AN ISSUE FR!! ULTIMATE ALLY INVENTED HRT TO SUPPORT EGRETTAIL. THE MOST BASED CAT EVER. I LOVE HER SHE’S JUST A LITTLE KITTY. I HOPE SHE’S OKAY. IM GONNA SAY IT METHINKS EGRET, HUSH PUPPY, AND SEVEN SILVERS R FOUND FAMILY JUST A COUPLE OF CHOSEN SIBS. UNLESS THIS IS A NO. SORRY IM EXCITED ABOUT SEVEN SILVERS
shoutout to cormorantpaw for getting his 2nd issue. kinda a crime that i only bring him up now but its ok. i love the goofy early cartoons titlecard image with the literal lovebug and him just thinking it over before going “oh fk im bi” and i love how egrettail was like “it seems like it to me, but it’s up to u” bc she can’t really like. force him to think he has a crush, something about that was really gentle- back to cormorantpaw!!! now he’s a blushy mess and i love him for it. also WHAT DO U HAVE TO DO BOY. WHAT IS YOUR ANGST
yes i know daffodilpaw was hardly here but she still gets her own section bc that’s my favorite community hc collection. cormorantpaw doesn’t seem to want to be involved romantically with her, saying how she’s nice but also noting how she doesn’t tend to listen to him (which doesn’t make daffy a bad person!! just something they gotta communicate as buddies) but also mentioning how she puts her paw on his, and also in the sleeping shot cormorantpaw is staring past daffodilpaw, who sleeps next to him, and at pinepaw. i’m just. babey noooo. break out of ur toxic mindset its okkk. unless u actually do like cormorantpaw then i’m. sorry. how did i make the daffodilpaw section the longest oops
rate this issue 5 mysterious end birds out of 5!!! thank u for another great issue :3
So sorry not answering this ask for awhile! All that trouble with my account hit at a bad time. I'm glad you liked the issue, though. :)
Egrettail had the patience of a saint for not beating the absolute shit out of Thrasher when they were in Defiance, and I'm certain she gave him what for on more than one occasion after Hush Puppy died.
Yes, she and Asphodelpaw may have had a conversation about similar realizations she was going through just like Cormorantpaw, heheh. We'll get there someday.
I was so excited to finally include Seven Silvers in an issue!! When I first created her character I wasn't planning on it, but she's just too fun not to use. Hell, I'm allowed to invent magic cat hormone therapy if I want to, who's gonna stop me. Seven, Hush Puppy, and Egret are any manner of close friends you like, and found family/siblings are as good a way as any.
The POVs from other characters are not going to be very common, since Pinepaw is the protagonist in the end, but it's always nice to dip back into Cormorantpaw's thick little skull. I was pretty pleased with myself for thinking of the rubberhose style joke with "lovebug", honestly. Don't worry about his angst, I'm sure it's nothing.
Good catch on everything with Daffodilpaw in this issue! It's something I did intentionally include, and did want to draw a comparison between Corm describing her as not really listening to him with Pinepaw always listening to what he says (which as you said, doesn't mean Daff is a bad person, just that she's got her own things to work out).

This part of TYBW reread is just that ‘When will you learn your actions have consequences!’ Vine
Tumblr media
He goes on to ignore this line of questioning which proves to be fatal to Nemu.
Why is soul king’s left arm serving Yhwach? Because no part of the soul king would ever serve you, Mayuri. The soul king serves only because he has been rendered a useful corpse. This is well over 1000 years of distilled hatred of shinigami—the arm of a God.
Right now, Mayuri truly believes this is a being he can subjugate. But this arm is more Quincy pride and calculation than Uryu was—the one person so far that Mayuri hasn’t beat.
Tumblr media
Again, Kubo is really hamming up how over confident Mayuri is. He just won’t shut the fuck up! He’s doing the same thing he did with Orihime—bargaining as a farce of respect.
You can keep only the dignity he wants you to keep. Have your name but the spelling will change because you’re a thing.
You’ll have a paper typed up on you and a nice place to float in preservation liquid and you’ll have everything about you squeezed out and dissected and stitched back into something new. Because the respect Mayuri gives is in how thoroughly he’ll use you.
Tumblr media
The fact that he basically tells them to fucking google what Explosive Reactive Armor is dhzuajahsishsis. Also, does that mean his sunshine outfit was metal??? He’s so paranoid, like he will put a bomb in or on anyone, even himself.
Also the way he sits into the floating platforms looks really fluid and no wonder—I’m sure he’s glad to have the weight off.
Tumblr media
Mayuri would rather die than not make freaky little inventions. If he can’t misuse the human body for functional purposes, he can’t live.
His alarm clock is a horrible mouth that starts licking his eyeballs if he tries to snooze, I just know it.
Tumblr media
I wanna know how long Mayuri gauges as a long time for performing arm surgery. Like, what, a week? A month?
Also, Pernida is evolving rapidly. He could barely speak a couple panels ago and now he’s taunting Mayuri back. Not just that, but he’s doing it in a similar way to how Mayuri would. His eye is smiling. If he could grin with a mouth, he’d be mirroring Mayuri, no doubt.
Tumblr media
Pernida is bastardizing what Mayuri did to Jizo.
Mayuri caused Jizo to bleed from his eye, using his finger to cause harm to Jizo.
Pernida is using the blood from his finger to pour into his eye, causing harm to himself.
Pernida is now mocking Mayuri for real and I’m not sure Mayuri is fully picking up on it.
Tumblr media
The fucked up abortion baby who looks purple and bloated and dead is finally due. He’s so proud of himself for this one liner.
Tumblr media
Szayel is rolling in his grave and so is Jizo. Mayuri punished his zanpakuto for disobeying and then altered it into a more advanced version of the one who made Jizo disobey.
Very vindictive. Mostly because Mayuri views disobedience as the highest insult from something meant to explicitly serve and protect him.
Even more so that Jizo’s first birth is one who feels constant pain.
Tumblr media
Remember the last time you forgot someone was a Quincy, Mayuri? Remember what happened when you dismissed that aspect of them as uninteresting?
Now begins the come down, methinks. Mayuri begins to realize what he should have panels and panels ago—why the soul king’s arm is fighting for Yhwach does matter.
Tumblr media
Pernida spells it out right here too—he has always been a Quincy. And by extension, the body he was attached to has always been a Quincy. The king they coveted was never theirs. The powers Mayuri is still figuring out are that of! A! Quincy! What do quincies do to their surroundings Mayuri???
Mayuri should start to feel very worried about how he’s going to come out of this alive—Pernida is thinking and acting and articulating like him. When the ending panel shows Nemu, it’s clear she understands Mayuri has been driven into a corner and is worried for the both of them. I’m not sure Mayuri has figured it out yet.

On Bridgerton season 2 & future speculation, my random ramblings ahoy:
- How is the casting director for this show *so on point*? I thought Kate & Edwina were perfect; believable both as sisters and different types reflective of their book dichotomy, and also every other scene all I could say was "omg she looks so gorgeous, SO pretty, her hair! Her dress!!" In awe.
- the FLOWERS, the DRESSES, this adaptation is just so gorgeously lovely to look at. I'd happily just watch wisteria grow outside that house
- an instrumental version of Kacey Musgraves ("I'm all right with a slow burrrrrrrnnnnn") would musically summarize my s2 Kate x Anthony feelings
- I had read all the Bridgerton books years before the adaptations, most of them twice, and then reread them all before season 1. Kate x Anthony are some of my favorites (Colin x Penelope are my book series favorites, but certain Kate x Anthony moments contend with them; enemies to lovers is after all my jam), so yes I am coming at this with Book Opinions... but I actually didn't mind the changes? I expected them, for one
- Show!Anthony is so much dumber than Book!Anthony, and I love him so. Was I annoyed in season 1 when he unbelievably tried marrying Daphne to the odious Nigel Berbrooke? Oh yes. But I'm used to it now and his well-meaning terrible decisions were all both comical and in character here.
- I *knew* the show was going to play up the Edwina & Anthony match into near love triangle levels, so the ridiculousness of letting it get altar-close did not faze me because they did it *well*. The angst was fun. Give me clips sent to Satisfied now, please ("I know my sister like I know my own miiiiiind, you will never find anyone as trusting or as kiiiiiind") because the Angelica and Eliza energy was constant and imho very intentional.
- some of my friends in my group texts seem to find Kate too harsh or both her & Anthony too annoyingly in denial and I can see where they're coming from but it worked for me.
Possibly I just find 'oldest sibling who tries to do everything for their family even though that is not always appreciated and makes life decisions influenced by the memory of a beloved father' too relatable??
- I thought the back-and-forth between them was sharp writing especially right before they finally hook up.
- also not sure I've ever seen as sexy a Consent Is Sexy scene as Bridgerton delivered this time ("I will stop."/"Do NOT stop" - give me one of those fancy fans to flutter at myself please) - intentional lil redemption arc for the show after the s1 storyline it adapted, methinks
- as much as I enjoy the "have to marry due to a compromising situation because of bee" plotline of the book, coming right off s1 I get that they didn't want to mirror the marriage plotline and am totally fine with it. The orangery scene with the Featheringtons was a nice nod to it- lots of nice nods where they changed things, I thought
- some book scenes I did miss though - Kate hiding under Anthony's desk while he rendezvouses with his ex the opera singer; I thought for sure we'd see Siena for that and while I get why they changed it (book Anthony is far more the capital R Rake & also a portion of the audience already disliked him from last season, scenes like that would not have helped!)... it could have been adapted still, and added true closure on the Siena feelings on Anthony's part before moving on with Kate. Maybe they couldn't get her? But in usual fashion that's one of my 'well if I was writing this' moments.
- Colin dropping the "me? Courting Penelope? Lol no" among friends *worked*, but yeah that has nothing on the cinematic power of him saying it in frustration to his brothers, hearing Penelope's "oh!", and all of them turning around in awkward horror & Benedict's kind moment with her walking her back to the house. I get why they wanted to cram it in, but no small loss, that one, AND if they needed it this season that would have been an excellent opportunity for Benedict setup.
- speaking of Benedict... I see you, articles teasing that they may change the book order of siblings' stories, and I am dubious. I'm very convinced we're still getting Benedict next but that they're starting to prep us now for changing orders.
I give it maybe 10% odds Colin/Penelope is the next main storyline and I would feel safe placing a wager against it were there relevant betting books. I don't think it would be a savvy showrunning move!
Penelope is the main connective central character between seasons right now & however much they change her and Colin's story, Whistledown is still so much a part of it, and there's such a cinematic moment in there I refuse to believe they'll skip adapting it, I am dubious they will play that card any sooner than they have to.
In fact I think the reverse. You want to keep people watching season over season as you change the main characters? You want to keep Whistledown fully in play?
Drag. That. Shit. Out. They're only renewed through s4 right now but Shonda Rhimes is still talking about ideally, they want 8(+, depending on what extent they franchise this, don't overfranchise this) and I very much would like all 8 seasons thanks. So assuming you want 8 seasons, and you have one steady subplot with two already-cast characters the audience is invested in... why would you shoot that shot early? Normally they're book 4 but I'm actually thinking they may put them in slot 5 or 6 presuming conversations with Netflix indicate they're likely to be renewed and don't have to close the story out.
Honestly, now that I know they're presumably going out of order, if I was doing it, I'd consider putting them in s6. But who then do you put first??
- Francesca has gotten zero development. Comically so, the Sister Not Appearing in This Story. Given her story spans years, if they truly expect to adapt her book than we NEED more Francesca in s3 and we need some Scotsmen to accordingly show up. Which, upping her role really only works well with one existing plotline... Benedict's.
- they are totally setting up Eloise's book plotline more than I expected! I thought if they were going to get more creative, Eloise or Benedict was the one they'd do it with, but I think the book fandom's intensity + the huge worldwide audience means they're going to be more faithful than I expected. Which uh yeah also means "personally I thought Benedict was the one I'd choose to make LGBT if I was adapting this series but I increasingly don't think they're actually going to do it... maybe when they get to Hyacinth or Gregory...?"😬
- I really hope they don't recast Hyacinth & Gregory & continue to just let them grow up; I think they're moving in that direction
- sooner or later there's got to be a time jump BUT the way they left things with Penelope and Eloise makes me hope they don't just jump a few years for s3! I don't want them to be estranged that long! Fix that!
- but with the emphasis on Colin still only being 21 and still a lot of growing up to do, and Eloise only beginning to be seen as a wallflower & for her & Penelope to stare down spinster status... I think it's important to get them to 28, or for my sanity's sake at least 26, which means we will need a time jump. Based on casting alone though I've always expected this is their master plan. (As much as I appreciate the rep for early-thirties women still being able to play teenagers on TV... let them be real adults for their own seasons)
- which leaves us with Benedict's season. Francesca needs set up; we can't jump to her AND her book spans years, so some events should take place pre time jump & some post. Eloise & Penelope's seasons need time jumps they seem to be prepping us for. AND it looks like they're going to use the Cowpers, who were played up this season, to fill a role in Benedict's plot so while he's so loveable I wouldn't mind another year of setup... thank you, next.
- literally the only other option is Francesca next, if you want to cast some REALLY hot Scot (or two) opposite her but when you want to maintain audience investment, & for both plot & character & renewal reasons, presumably want to hang onto the Colin/Penelope card as long as possible, going with a character the audience already knows and cares about is key.
- but say you're going to do Benedict next and again, hang onto that Colin/Penelope card. I'm thinking the logical #4 season is, in fact, then Francesca (again! If they can get renewal!). You have to do Colin/Penelope if you're ending with s4 but... Netflix's cancellation-happy side aside, does anyone really expect that? Based on every girl I know binging Bridgerton this weekend... doubtful. Set up Francesca next season to take lead in #4, and you have 2 seasons more of fan-favorite characters Eloise, Colin, and Penelope getting plots, development...and time.
- Eloise's plotline is very impacted by Colin/Penelope butttt you could reverse it, given Penelope her "last left on the shelf" feeling. Should they? Would they? Idk. But you could.
- if you wanted to save Colin-Penelope as long as possible, Hyacinth's actress is growing up fast enough (and would debut at 18, actress is 15 now playing about 11 and we're expecting at least some time jump) they *could* even jam that in first. Again, should they, would they, less likely, but if they're throwing that door open... maybe.
- but yeah my imaginary money remains on Benedict next & I do think we're getting Sophie, straight-up. I may be proved wrong! But that's my bet.
- finally please PLEASe, show, keep Simone Ashley around for s2. Aside from being a great way to give Violet Bridgerton a storyline with some heft - navigating transitioning the role of viscountness!- the lack of a cameo from Simon DID feel weird. If he couldn't be at pall-mall, at least Anthony's wedding when they were established as such friends. That's a one-day filming fix. Returns don't need to steal the spotlight! But Kate is far more central to later books than Simon & also, who's going to object to more Simone Ashley? #KeepKate2023 (though uh Netflix if you want to surprise me & give me season 3 at Christmas, that'd be grand thanks).
- oh finally! Nicola Coughlan getting to use her Irish accent! A surprise & a delight; I'm ready for Derry Girls s3 now

Currently on day four of reading The Fallout and IT IS SO GOOD. I can't believe I haven't read it until now. Because of this story and Measure of a Man, I went in and added dates to my chapters. As a writer, I've always struggled with timeline issues, so it made sense for me to put them for my own sanity (and if I forget to write them down in my Illumine notebook).
My to read list for Dramione fics is getting ridiculous, so after The Fallout, methinks I'm going to pause to reread the whole Harry Potter series due to me forgetting most of the minor details (also to remember Peeves, the character forgotten by the films).
