Okie dokie so in the midst of outlining the main plot of the Fluffy!AU I was hit by some headcanons (that incidentally have nothin’ to do with said AU) and I’d figure I’d share them. :3
-Might come to a surprise for others, but Twi’s a big time gamer. Not originally; before coming to Ponyville her only exposure to video games were because of Spike and while she enjoyed the games he played to some extent, she never attempted playing them. It’s Dash and Pinkie Pie who got her into it with Assassin’s Creed. She got hooked with the story first, fascinated with how surprisingly accurate the game got with its history despite placing its own spins to it for the sake of the plot, then she got hooked onto the gameplay, and the rest is history.
She loves strategic games and (surprisingly) horror games the most, but she’ll give just about anything a try.
-In the same vein as the first headcanon, Rarity likes watching video games (especially if it’s Twilight playing). She herself can’t get into actually playing any of the games, but she’s always down to sit, do some sewing and watch all the while. She’s especially invested in horrors; something about sitting on the couch and experiencing the terror with the player is... well, fun for her. It’s also kinda funny, seeing Twi or Spike or Rainbow startle at jumpscares: they don’t get her as badly as it does them.
-Scootaloo can’t fly and she never will. I think I’ve spoke about this before, but Scootaloo has a development issue with her wings: she was born with it. They are smaller than what they should be and while they are strong enough to allow her to hover and glide (thanks to tons of physical therapy and exercises) she can’t actually fly with them. This was quite the sore spot for her for years, but she has since grown to accept it and have even used this to her advantage. Scootaloo, when she grows older, will make history in being known as the best freestyle scooterist and skateboarder, inventing new extreme tricks and innovating existing ones. She will also be known as a pioneer of scooter sports, helping it launch into popularity in Equestria.
I also like the idea that she becomes good at skydiving and wingsuiting, but instead of a suit she can just use her wings to glide long distances.
-Continuing with Scootaloo, I’ve since scrapped the idea that she’s an orphan. Instead, she lives with her aunt Lofty and her wife Holiday. Due to neglect at home with her birth parents (both kept leaving her alone to go one vacation after vacation without her), Lofty stepped in to take little Scoots in. Despite recognizing their abandonment of her, Scootaloo still can’t help but miss her parents sometimes. That said, she wouldn’t trade her home with her aunts for the world; they love her and she loves them.
-I keep hinting at it in my AUs but I have the headcanon that Dash is very artistic. She loves to paint, draw, write, but her favorites is especially painting and writing. Her paintings are often very vibrant and always seem to be moving, and while she can work with brushes she much prefers to finger paint. Her work is so good she could feasibly pursue a career in art if she so chose to, but her heart lies in the skies. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if she took commissions and freelance work every now and again. As for writing, she writes fanfics in her spare time, especially for Daring Do. She and Twilight discuss their loves and dislikes of the series and Dash once went as far as to “correct” a plot point in the book’s canon she didn’t like. Twi happened upon it and was... well, admittedly very impressed, and suggested she posted her stuff online on a fanfic website (you bet your ass Twi reads fanfics, c’mon). Her pen name could possibly be ColorfullyDaring or somethin’ like that. xD
-The Apple Family doesn’t own just one dog... they own ten. Winona is the leader of this pack, but they half a vast assortment of doggos who the family use as not only working dogs, but companions and hunting dogs. They’re all good doggies and love the family lots (and the family loves them just as much), but each member of the family has their near constant companion. AJ has Winona, Granny has the old family hound Chief (oldest dog of the bunch; she’s been around since Bright Mac was a foal), Big Mac has the cute little beagle Spot, and Apple Bloom is often tailed by their biggest dog, Bear.
-I adore the idea that Jackpot (Trixie’s dad) and Big Bucks are married, soooooo that means Trixie has two dads! :3 When she was a foal, she’d always called Jackpot “Mommy” and Big Bucks “Daddy”. At first Jackpot tried to correct her, but no matter what he did she still referred to him as “mom”. It was always a spot for teasing from Big Bucks too, who encouraged their kid with things like “go ask mama” or “tell mommy you love him!” Eventually though, Jackpot found himself endeared to it, so much so that he actually kinda misses being called mom, now that Trixie has stopped and has been calling him dad.
-I’ve denied it for years in the past but it’s time that I go ahead and embrace the idea that Celestia and Luna are... possibly demigods. In the literal form of the term, so they are half-god half-mortal (gods and goddesses do exist in my headcanon, yes). So, how did they come to be? A very powerful god fell in love with a mortal: an alicorn mare, and they had Celestia, Luna, and Cosmos (the Sisters’ scrapped brother; I’ve made him “canon” in my headcanon) together. This headcanon is actually a bit too long to put here, so I’ll explain it later in a separate post. I’m also toying with the idea that the siblings are half siblings instead, but I haven’t decided on that yet o3o
-Speaking of Cosmos! Here’s a copy/paste of the headcanon I made up for him:
He’s the middle brother to Celestia and Luna and the Prince of Harmony. He's short and sturdy and warm and inviting, this alicorn's power resides within maintaining balance, harmony, and his very being is tethered to the world Gaia (like how Celly and Luna's beings are tethered to the sun and moon respectively). I haven't fully figured out all of his abilities, but I'd say his magic is closely tied to the earth and as his sisters are the living embodiment of their celestial bodies, Cosmos is the living embodiment of harmony. He is also the origin of the Elements of Harmony, of which came about around the time Discord showed up: Cosmos' exact opposite.
Even with the combined strength of all three siblings, Discord was simply too powerful to be stopped in his quest to spread excessive chaos (upsetting the world's balance), so in order to put a stop to the Dawn of Chaos, Cosmos sacrifices himself and used his magic and entire life essence into forming the Tree of Harmony. From this came the Elements of Harmony, purified and concentrated magic in the form of crystal gems that represent the aspects of harmony: Honestly, Generosity, Laughter, Kindess, Loyalty, and Friendship (otherwise known as Magic). No longer restricted by the physical limitations of a flesh and blood body, the power of Harmony for the first time could be fully utilized by Celestia and Luna to defeat Discord and imprison him in stone: a fitting parallel, considering the fate of their brother. The sisters vowed use the Elements of Harmony only when absolutely necessary, and until then the Elements would remain within their encasing of the Tree of Harmony, safe and tucked away until it is needed.... and maybe, somehow, find a way to revive their brother?? All of this came about from the idea that the Elements of Harmony hold some level of sentience, in which not just anyone could use the Elements... they had to be chosen by the Elements. This is why Luna, when she became corrupted and turned into Nightmare Moon, could not use her half of the elements: the Elements no longer deemed her worthy of wielding them, and as such rejected her. So, why not have the Elements' consciousness... or semi-consciousness come from the unused concept of their long lost brother? C:
Aaaaaaaand that’s all for right now! Might add more to this post later, but ye. Just wanted to share some of my thoughts uwu

I decided to start designing my next gen. I’ll be covering the subject in the sequel to Like Fireworks in the Sky, but I wanted to go ahead and work out designs now. So up first, the daughters of Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer: Nova Burst (left) and Radiant Comet (right). More details under the cut.
For a little bit of backstory, I imagine that Sunset returns to Equestria after all her friends in the human dimension graduate. They go their separate ways, and while they still stay in contact, the relationships become a little strained and Sunset longs for her old world, so she comes back. She takes up magic studies once more and becomes a teacher, working closely with Twilight. Sunset also enjoys getting to see Starlight, as well as getting to know the pony counterparts to her human friends, who she grows to like just as much. But she remains closest to Twilight, and in time they start dating and finally decide they want to be together.
Twilight and Sunset use a sex swap spell to conceive, with Twilight taking the stallion role. She later feels bad when she finds out they’ll be having twins, which will be a bit rough on Sunset’s smaller body. But they get through the pregnancy without any serious complications, and have two healthy alicorn daughters. Nova was the first to be born, followed by Comet. The two are very talented magic users like their parents and will go on to be the raisers of the Sun and the Moon in Celestia and Luna’s place. I’m sure you can guess who manages which. Now, on to some info about the girls. Please know that some of this is still subject to change.
Nova Burst
Nova is the more rambunctious of the twins. While she understands the importance of her mother’s role in Equestria, as well as her own potential, she can’t help but push back against rules she doesn’t agree with and challenge others to think differently than they usually would. Nova is talented with light magic and is very flashy when she uses it, hence her cutie mark being a bright supernova. She also has a fascination with space and pushes for the advancement of space technology. She is determined for ponies to use science to get to the moon within her lifetime. On an unrelated note, Luna wants nothing to do with that project.
Though Nova is quite the punk, she’s genuinely a good person at heart just like her parents and she only wants the best for Equestria, and is willing to take on whatever princess-y tasks are assigned to her. Nova likes spending time with Sunset more than Twilight, but loves both parents equally. And of course she loves hanging out with her sister, they both enjoy learning from each other and sharing magic tricks.
Radiant Comet
Radiant is quieter than her sister, preferring to study and practice her magic in solitude. Radiant is closer to Twilight, often shadowing her as she goes about her day. She never quite grew out of it, and is still eager to help her out. She has an aptitude for dark magic, but is very careful not to do anything unethical or dangerous with it. Instead, she strives to show everyone that there’s no such thing as evil or good magic, it all comes down to the magic user themselves and any magic can be beneficial if you want it to be. Twilight is very interested in her studies but advises her to be careful, as many ponies have been tempted down dark paths by the promise of power. Luckily, much like her sister, all Comet really wants is to better Equestria.
Comet has a similar interest in space, but while Nova is focused on the possibility of exploration, Comet would much rather watch the constellations and celestial bodies. She tracks meteor showers and comets, and discovers many more objects that hadn’t previously been seen. Her enthusiasm inspires astronomers and astrologists alike. She gained her comet-like cutie mark upon discovering her knack for understanding space, which will come in handy when it comes time for her to move the Moon. She may even be able to cast a spell to let it move on its own, so she can focus her efforts on other things. But nah, that’d be pretty crazy, right?
That’s about all I have for them so far, but I just wanted to draw them and get them posted. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy. :D More kids coming soon, but be warned, not all of my future pairings will actually have kids. But the ones that do, I’ll make some designs for them.

Alrighty, not sure when the next season is going to start, but I do know that this bunch of pony is ending with the two-parter “School Raze”.  I… may have been one of those kids who wouldn’t have been sad to see their school razed.
* Cozy Glow is being helpful.  Supposedly. I wouldn’t really be sure all of the dropped letters were for the school.  Or that there wasn’t more.
* That kid’s got more of a rainbow mane than Rainbow Dash.
* Girl’s gunning for Spike’s job.
* I feel ya Yona. Except for the falling through a cloud bit.  Can’t say I’ve come that close to death from heights.
* And this is why you should keep your feet/hooves on the ground!
* Spontaneous magic failure is a good enough reason for a crying fit.  Gonna be a pain to touch up her makeup afterward though without it.
* It seems like jumping the gun to blame Tirek.  I mean, Chrysalis had that throne made of magic-nullifying stone.  Oh sure, her last plan did not impress, but she is still out there.  Or for the same kind of source it could easily be Maud.  Or a new threat.  But it’s probably Tirek, as he’s the one mentioned.
* OK, Spike almost chocking on a letter is kinda horrifying.  Also, if you’re having magic problems, don’t send messages by magic. Lucky that got through at all. Though maybe Celestia sent a pegasus as well just in case.
* See, Starswirl knows to just use a mundane messenger.
* I dunno, it doesn’t really match Tirek’s MO.  I mean, he’d mug one pony at a time, or grab groups, but it was still very targeted. If he could pull this kind of a generalized drain I think he would have.  Unless he just figured it out or something.
* When was Twilight ever in Tartarus?  She was the only princess not to get sent there.  …Oh right, walking Cerberus back to his post.  Never mind, forgot the offscreen occurrence for a second there.
* Eh, Twilight’s justified in a little freak out away from the troops her friends.
* Yeah, Cozy totally just made a power grab here.  I do have to wonder what she did to Starlight after she stayed behind rather than adventuring.
* Smolder was raised in a culture of struggle and dominance.  She’s knows Cozy’s story stinks like the restrooms after a class trip to Taco Bellflower.
* Bug repellent spells would probably be the one of the best things about magic.  Anyway, has Rarity considered using her tail as a flyswatter?
* And the show says that 2 seconds later.  It’s nice when they remember they’re equines.
* “I think we have all the magic we need right here.”  Cue Rainbow’s cloud holding ability failing in 3… 2… 1…
* Nice door to the pits of Hell.  Er, Tartarus.
* How many doors has Pinkie gotten in that way?  Also, not having a key seems like a lack of foresight when you know the normal way of opening the lock is failing.
* It can magically open any door… and just so happens to perfectly match the indentation of this one.
* Alternatively, imagine the “key of unfettered access” looking like a keyblade, because of course that’s what comes to mind when mentioning a magical key that can open any lock these days.
* On one hand, yes, it’s sad that all of these creatures have lost abilities inherit to them.  In the wild that could cause a huge problem for survival.  However, I would remind Spike that they are in Tartarus for a reason.  I mean, assuming that they dont want to lock up every creature from a species that would strongly imply that these are the dangerous, feral pony-killers.
* Chancellor Neighsay has a point about a foal being left in charge.  Except she wasn’t, but Cozy’s not about to admit that.
* Yeah, I don’t think you can just walk into a facility and declare yourself to be in charge now. Even Cozy has made the pretense of being put into her position temporarily under extreme circumstances by the people entitled to make that decision.
* Yeah, uh, pretty sure Cerberus doesn’t need magic to do his job.
* OK, I did not need to see Tirek do that thing with his tongue.
* Magic goes missing and so Neighsay thinks Twilight is wasting her time trying to fix the problem rather than stomping on other races while she is at her weakest.  Wow. This guy is officially pants-on-head duuuuuuuuumb.
* Further proof this guy has drunk far too much Trump-aid is he actually buys Sandbar’s sudden yet inevitable betrayal of his friends.
* I’m not sure the CMC can actually help here.  They ain’t got power either.  Of course they’re only supposed to cause a distraction, but still.
* So Cozy Glow learned how to drain magic from Tirek, because she bothered to write and ask and he was bored.  You know… I’ll buy it.  Guy’s still probably plotting an escape, and at least he could be assured of revenge by proxy.
* “Empress of Friendship”? Girl… no.  Just, no.  That name is stupid.  So, so stupid.
EPISODE 25 OVER!  EPISODE 26 NOW!
 * Did Twilight just suggest draining the monsters of their remaining magic to power her own for an escape? Don’t turn into a Blood Mage Twilight!  Stay good!  Stay good!
* If all of Equestria’s magic is being sucked up to where Starlight is being held, I wonder what that’ll do to her after this is all fixed.  I mean, I know you shouldn’t consume an energy field larger than yourself, but if there was ever a time to have a bite…
* Yeah, not to disagree with Sandbar, but… I gotta disagree with Sandbar.  There’s no way that idiot wouldn’t think this was just some trick by the monsters.
* “The reign of Princess Twilight is over?”  Yeah, look forward to a long stay in Tartarus after this for an attempted coup.
* Yeah, that was a pathetically short stint as headstallion.  Dude was barely a road bump to Cozy, and all she had to do was point out what a complete failure and traitor he was.  If only it was that easy in real life…
* Shoulda kept charging, Yona.  Impressive that she can pick a lock with a horn that size though.  Wonder where she learned it?  Probably Pinkie’s class.
* Tirek was kinda short-sighted here.  He had no plan beyond getting rid of magic.  Which screws him too, as he’s left frail and powerless.  Unless he has a way of drawing upon the Ether he hasn’t mentioned.
* Fluttershy is about to attempt an Epic Druid feat.  Pinkie meanwhile attempts an Epic Troll feat.
* So, yank out a single artifact and cause the Cataclysm.  Got it, thanks for the safety tip Ocellus.  Guessing this means they have to pull them all out at the same time.
* You know, if there was ever an opportunity to have Twilight undergo a second ascension, that was it.  Also, kinda weird that draining the magic from those creatures made them normal, separate animals.
* Nothing like the stupidity of an angry mob.  Seriously, so many idiots in this finale.
* The Tree just said “no”,
* Well, points to Cozy for trying to salvage the situation with the wrath of an angry alicorn before her.
* Make that 3 angry alicorns, an angry mob of students, the Elemental Harmony squad, the Elemental Harmony Jr. Division, and a whole lot of angry guards.  Oh, and a braindead bigot who happens to have a powerful artifact.
* And so a little girl was shut behind bars in the deepest pit of Tartarus forever.  But chances are that she’s a complete uncurable sociopath anyway?
And that’s the end of the season.  For the finale itself, eh, it was alright, but Neighsay if still aggravating and Cozy only got as far as she did because most ponies apparently love to eat lead paint chips as a snack.  But the actual threat was certainly menacing enough.  I am a little disappointed Neighsay didn’t have to pay for all the crap he’s pulled.  Seriously, dude should have at least lost his job several times over during this season.
And as for the season itself, there were some interesting world building and character episodes in there. But honestly the whole Friendship School idea still hasn’t sold itself to me.  And considering they had an entire season to do that in with the opening and finale focusing on the place and its students, that’s not good. Bringing students together from a wide area and different species?  Sure, sounds interesting.  Having the teachers help out their students with friendship problems and demonstrate how it and teamwork can help you out in an academic setting and outside it as well? Great!  But having an entire school dedicated to friendship is still just the most eye-rolling thing.  They really shouldn’t have tried to push it that far.  It just doesn’t work.  But overall while this hasn’t been my favorite season I still enjoy the show overall and am looking forward to more… whenever they get around to that.

CanvasWatches: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (Seasons 1-6ish)
With Season 7 having arrived, I might as well talk about this.
I used to be super into My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. So much. It’s the only fandom I actually participated in to any notable degrees.
I mean, I respect fan fiction, it has value and a place, but I’d always been one to prefer crafting my own playground over utilizing someone else’s sandbox. So it takes a lot to draw me out and produce fan works.
In this case, it was largely frustration with the fan depiction of a certain background pony.
My interest was first piqued when El Goonish Shive’s artist, Dan Shive, produced a couple fanworks for the series, and recommended the series. I’m always up for trying new and unexpected things, why not a show for little girls? Perhaps there’s some value. Besides, apparently they reference Doctor Who, which I was into at the time.[1]
iTunes had the first episode free, so I downloaded and watched it. I thought it was… okay. Okay enough that I bought the second episode, just so I could finish the narrative and not have half a story sitting in my library.[2] The pilot was decent, but I was otherwise unmoved.
But then my brother continued watching the series via the YouTubes, and so I decided to keep trying. Soon enough, I came around, and caught all the way up with Owl’s Well that Ends Well, the most recent episode at the time.
As is tradition, I either get into a piece of media way early, or way late. There is rarely middle ground.
I really loved the first season. Yes, it was hokey, every episode had to have a moral, but it was inventive, built an interesting world that cross-sects our reality and the compromises required for ponies to operate, and was a source of positivity that was pulling people together. It was cute.
The second season knocked it out of the park. It was amazing. From the start, with Discord as an interesting antagonist, and Lesson Zero establishing just the right amount of formula change to open narrative options, and many well written episodes mixed with world building. Then ending with the cliche ‘girly wedding’ getting mixed up with elements of Fair Folk myth, including an amazing villain design. The second season is the best of the series.
Then there was season three…
First off, Lauren Faust had left completely. Not to forcibly dredge up any drama, but without the initial creative push, there obviously existed a drift from the original vision. Such things rarely go well.
Further, there’s a pattern I’ve noticed with myself and television: I tend to really love the second or third seasons, but then feel the series goes downhill afterwards. Buffy, for example, really lost me after the cast graduated High School. Community’s second season was the best, and from there kept trying to replicate magic it already did.[3]
Such was the case with MLP. It’s difficult to nail down, but the 13-episode season just felt a little off the whole time. Like it wasn’t as crisply written or thought through. Was it me? Did I become too analytical?
Obviously, not every episode in the first two seasons were perfect. That’d be ridiculous. But even the episodes I didn’t love had some redeeming features, and were irregular.
Season 3 had a real ‘One episode on, one episode off’ thing going for me. It does contain Sleepless in Ponyville, my second favorite episode of the series, but it was mostly okay, up until Twilight became an alicorn.
Twilight becoming a princess always felt off. It confused the mythology, was a sudden change in the status quo, and as we proceeded into season 4, the change in position was both rarely addressed, and more rarely had any significance.
Season 4 took a lot of risks, and few of them paid off. Of course, you need to take risks when telling stories, mix up presumptions and what’s been established, but one important thing when doing so is having such things have weight, and not discarding too much.
Destroying the library was a bad choice. Possibly done to bring in the toy company mandated castle, but… we grew to love the library, it was visually interesting, and was a good solid point. Twilight’s new castle is… generic purple, and without an obvious floor plan. Just corridors and doorways.
After that, my interest just kept waning. I stopped rewatching episodes because… eh. As the series continued, there have been fewer and fewer episodes that spark my interest, and more casual disregard of what’s been established. The first two season were great at maintaining continuity while still telling self-contained episodes, which I love.
The biggest insult is still the Cutie Mark Crusaders finally getting their cutie marks, and them being… not what had been foreshadowed. At all. Work was put into indicating their talents, and it’s tossed aside for ‘Eh… you’re good at getting ponies cutie marks’. Yes, it’s a nice way to maintain their dynamic, but is unnecessary, and breaks continuity.
Worse, it treats the three fillies as a single unit. If you hadn’t noticed, my two favorite episodes are Scootaloo focused. Because, for a good stretch, the series did a good job of having characters, even someone as secondary as Scootaloo, have a sense of independence and evolution. Scootaloo’s an amazing examination of hero worship and the possibility of not achieving heights you’d hope, but finding strength anyways. Apple Bloom functions both as a crusader, a member of the Apple Family, and a protagonist in her own right. Sweetie Belle is an annoying little sister with a subtle inferiority complex.
All the characters work because they have a strong sense of self, and then are applied to one another for narratives, not just different faces for crowds.[4]
But, no, the CMC are now a single unit. None of the three have led an episode, by themselves, since Crusaders of the Lost Mark. And that’s a shame.
The later seasons have become an awkward mix of forcing changes, and call backs that don’t quite work out.
And now we have season seven. I should watch that premier. Maybe I’ll review it, but I wouldn’t say keep an eye out for more. Just… looking to keep coasting until I just can’t bother any more.
Maybe I should finally rewatch the series through, too, just for the sake of fair reevaluation. Dunno.
Until next time, check out my stuff, support me on patreon, and feel free to talk to my face.
Kataal kataal.
[1] I have fallen way behind. May never pick up the series again, if I’m being honest. No real reason, just lost steam. [2] Which reminds me, I really should get Color of Magic one of these days. [3] Important rule about stage magic: never perform the same trick before an audience twice. [4] A criticism that could be levied at Paranatural. Great writing, maybe weak borders for characters.
