julia talking about kamen rider being at its best when it’s about two boys made me want to catalogue the kamen rider seasons that are about two boys. “about two boys” here being assumed to mean the double riders formula of two heroes who work together and support each other but maybe also bounce off of each other in interesting complex ways
of course we have rider 1971. the original. no notes
v3 in its last stretch, of course. no notes
i haven’t seen stronger but i’m pretty sure it’s about two boys but one of them is a girl. no notes
kuuga is complicated because godai and ichijou are such an iconic partnership/duo/marriage but at the same time godai being The One And Only Hero is such a major thematic part of the story and ichijou being just a normal human who supports him the best he can but can’t fully meet godai on his level is. also a thing for sure. (thinks for days and days about “watch my henshin” and its symbolism) i’m gonna count it but it’s an interesting and unique specimen
ryuki is about MANY boys but ren and shinji are an iconic duo. pioneered the two boys format of being constantly clashing foils who still work together to fight monsters
i keep saying blade is ultimately about kenzaki and hajime’s relationship but i don’t think it qualifies for this category. world-shattering star-crossed romance is not the same as double riders who work together and support each other also no one in this show can ever work together for one minute. blade is absolutely about four boys in general though
hibiki is about a big guy and a little guy. not sure if it counts because it definitely revolves around hibiki and asumu as the two main characters and their relationship but at the same time a wise adult mentoring a teenager is again a way different dynamic than double riders who work together. so i’m disqualifying it. shoutout to hibiki and asumu though i love them soooooo much
den-o is kind of about two boys with ryoutarou and momotaros but there are also three other boys in there so it’s about five boys. but momotaros is kind of the main and central one so i think it also counts as being about two boys? in any case the core dynamic of working together and supporting each other is absolutely there so it 100% counts in spirit either way
i WISH wataru had another boy then he wouldn’t be so sad and alone :(
tsukasa and daiki are absolutely two boys but to the tune of bad romance by lady gaga
W THE ULTIMATE TWO BOYS RIDER. WE HAVE NOT SEEN TWO BOYS LIKE THIS SINCE THE SHOWA ERA which makes sense since it was conceived as a showa callback. NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL TWO BOYS
ooo is ABSOLUTELY about two boys. took the ren and shinji format and honed it to Two Boys perfection. and, in a fun bonus, date and gotou are ALSO two boys and the most “double riders” guys to ever not actually be main riders
fourze is not about two boys, it is about a whole friend group. yayyy friendship :)
no one in gaim likes each other
emu and parad are kind of a stealth Two Boys but the relationship takes so long to fully bear fruit i don’t think it counts
BUILD: NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL TWO BOYS!!!!! YOU CAN’T GET MUCH MORE TWO BOYS THAN THIS!!!!! once again a series conceived as a showa throwback. they need to do this more often
sougo and geiz are two boys in the way of a cute tsundere bl manga but idk how much they are two boys in the way of kamen rider
no one in reiwa is two boys :( this is so sad can we get another showa throwback season. hanasaku is two girls though yknow they have a very v3 and riderman dynamic now that i think of it. i’m counting it

if i wanted to get into kamen rider but haven't really seen any tokusatsu before are there any shows in particular you'd recommend?
Tumblr media
I've been waiting for this.
Now, because there is a colorful truckton of Rider series (and that's if we stick to Kamen Rider alone), each one with its own particular set of gimmicks, themes and overall atmospheres, it would be easier to answer this knowing what your tastes tend to veer to, but I'll try to pick some that I think are good to start off with among my personal favorites and provide a brief description of their pros and cons, so that if nothing else you can see if one or the other sounds like it might be up your alley.
Kuuga
+Probably the one that best weaves its elements - script, plot, camera work, characters, aesthetics and themes - into an incredibly tight and cohesive work. Every single second of Kuuga drips with a crystal clear depiction of the vision and thought behind it, to what I would dare deem a downright artistic degree. The story is presented in equal parts as a police procedural and a hero's journey: each Monster of the Week follows a specific pattern to their murders that must be figured out, all while the protagonist, Godai Yusuke, is intent on figuring out his newfound powers. I particularly love how organic the latter is done in this series: more often than not, Riders either figure out how to use their abilities within the span of a single battle or come with said knowledge in a pre-packaged form, so to speak. Not Kuuga! He has to learn and understand like you and I would if suddenly we became possessed of superhuman strength or senses, with all the caveats that involves, and this is all woven perfectly together and is in service of the story depicted in each episode. I cannot overstate enough how every single second of Kuuga never feels wasted. If you want a serious, heartfelt story about what it means to fight monsters at the risk of becoming one yourself, you will Love Kuuga.
Be warned though: it's a tokusatsu show made in the 2000's. This means the CG effects look like they were made in the 80's. You should be prepared to stomach some incredibly outdated special effects when approaching tokusatsu by default anyway, but if you can get past the hurdle, you may even come to appreciate the inherent cheesiness of it all.
Ryuuki
It might seem weird to recommend what was, for its time, one of the boldest takes on the franchise. It was Ryuuki, after all, that introduced the Rider Battle Royale concept as the main focus of its story. But the good news is that not only did it work, it made for an incredibly engaging story filled with drama, mystery, betrayals, friendship and morally bankrupt lawyers. The main cast of Riders are a fun bunch, which is a must for this kind of story, and whether fighting for supremacy of engaging in begrudging alliances, it's always interesting to see the sparks that fly from their interaction. This was the first series to introduce the Powers Via Cards gimmick and talking belts, the former of which was used time and again for several of the series that followed it, whereas the latter has become one of the franchise's staples. Overall, you will like Ryuuki if you appreciate gritty shonen with a focus on battles between a stable of main characters where nobody is quite the hero or villain of the story (except, of course, for the main protagonist).
Fun fact: when Madoka Magica first came out, people saw so many parallels between it and Ryuuki that people thought Gen Urobuchi, PMMM's writer, had ripped it off when penning the script. You will find quite the number of fan arts where the two works crossover with each other. Funnily enough, it wouldn't be until years later that Urobuchi would be hired to write a Rider show, Gaim.
Fourze
Take the stereotypical American school setup from every teen comedy/drama ever. You know, the ones with the clearly defined cliques of jocks, preps, goths etc. Now transpose it wholesale in Japan and toss in monsters in elaborate rubber suits and a spandex suit that looks like a space rocket gijinka to fight them all. Wrap it up in some of the most damn fun and endearing writing you'll ever find in a tokusatsu show, or really any shows in general, and you'll end up with the winning formula that earned Fourze a beloved spot in the hearts of both long-time toku fans and newcomers to the genre.
Fourze is probably the easiest show to recommend in this list. It brims with youthful enthusiasm and vitality, wears its heart on its shiny sleeve, and is so earnest in everything it does you can't help but love it. I cannot overstate it enough when I say that Fourze is the quintessential fun show. Perfect to watch alone when you're in dire need of a smile, and even better to watch along with friends to make some very, very fun memories together.

Welcome to Kyoto! Following the reconciliation of father and son last episode, we take a page out of Fourze's screenplay and go on a class trip~! As Hotaro dreams for a future between humans and Chemies, for what reason does the Dark Sister Clotho become an uninvited guest?
Spoilers, I guess...
-Y'know, we surprisingly haven't seen all that much of Furasu High School itself.
-The time has come... for Kyoto!
-That seems to be the class trip location in shows like these. Kaguya-sama, Bloom Into You, Digimon Adventure 02, the sucky stealth minigame in Persona 3 that's somehow infinitely less terrible than any of the other hot spring sections... Think it was even in Cardcaptor Sakura too, incidentally.
-Big missed opportunity, by the way, to not have even a mild crossover between Fourze and Smile PreCure, which both had school trips to Kyoto at the same time.
-The furthest I've ever gone on a field trip was in 5th grade, when we went on a field trip to Tennessee to visit Ruby Falls. I've been there before with my mom, so it wasn't anything new, but it was still fun. Never had a full field trip again after that though.
-"I hope you make sure to STUDY!"
-Something that Hotaro's ill prepared for.
-Kudoh, you gotta help us out.
-No friends... but us~!
-Hello, Mr. Kannushi.
-ALIENS
-Kajiki and Hotaro! Hunting for aliens!
-Hi there, Spanner.
-There's your girlfriend, the Clover Torturer.
-Ohhhhhhhhhh
-I see Lachesis has a real green thumb.
-"Not impressed! I can do that too!"
-Ohhhhhhh, Triple Tuned.
-Oh, she's freaky, huh?
-"Are you done playing weird games with your weird boyfriend yet? :<"
-Oh, a Level 10~! Meeting our first one soon, huh?
-What the fuck is that.
-Don't you cut away from me, Lachesis, I wanna know what you just did.
-Hopper1.....
-Poor boy...
-YOU FORGOT HIM
-WHAT THE HELL, MAN
-"I fuckin' hate Kamen Rider. Which one of you assholes is gonna kill him for me."
-Oh, this guy's a jackoff!
-Hoppa~!
-He wants to meet Friend!
-Batta!
-Oh hello, miss.
-Special place?
-Himeno Hijiri....
-Whoa, she was in middle school seven years ago?
-And you were in 4th grade when this issue was published.
-...I think she's a little too old for you buddy, unless I misread it.
-He didn't see nothin', Rinne!
-Hot damn, Clotho's strong.
-Jungle Jan...
-Ohhhhhh, this hoodie guy seems nasty.
-Hotaro's seriously into this.
-"Weren't you nerds looking for UFOs?"
-"UFOS!? THERE'S A HOT OLDER LADY WHO LIKES THE OCCULT!"
-I think how awkward the acting is kinda adds to Gotchard's atmosphere rather than detracting from it.
-I hear this is kinda like how community theater goes.
-Haunted house...
-Rinne's having the time of her life today.
-Hello, Hijiwi-san
-
-YOU LEFT EVERYTHING THERE-
-Hiiiii, Smaphone.
-Golddash came out to play~!
-I sure hope you give Renge a tip for all her hard work.
-Hitodama...
-Oh shit, Clotho.
-Hello, Mr. Minato.
-I'm still suspicious of you, but I feel like you've at least got good intentions even if the rest of the Academy is shady af.
-Oh fuck, ninjas and aliens.
-This really is Fourze.
-We're doing her thing now, Ichinose.
-"Hang him from your vines if you want! I just want him dead!"
-Oh, you're just a classy guy aren't you.
-Oh at least Kudoh's on the ball.
-Oh fuck, giant robot time?
-LET'S GOOOOOO
-BatKingrobo!
-Far shot...
-Oh that's the hoodie guy
-Yeah, sorry buddy... it really wasn't gonna work out like that.
-Oh okay, this is just straight up Ultraman now.
-Finisher Beam!
-Very funny, Toei.
-Hiiiiii, Golddash~!
-Steamliner~!
-What next?
-Ohhhhhh, the guy's an arsonist.
-Those hitodama they saw... probably a Chemy if it forms the basis of his Malgam.

Ooh nice to see a fellow Kamen Rider type of person
Personally, out of the three main tokusatsu, I think I watched Kamen Rider more than anything. I did watch all 3 equally at first but my interest went from Ultraman and Super Sentai (from when I was little) to more of Kamen Rider as I grew older.
I haven't watched much from Reiwa since I stopped watching Tokusatsu maybe 3 years ago. But growing up, my parents were into tokusatsu, so I was naturally shown a lot of it, lmaoo. I kinda stopped being open about it after some kid in third grade made fun of me for it 💀
After that, I became self-conscious about it as I grew up, so I told myself I had to stop watching it. My parents still watch it though, and they tell me it's good, but I don't have the courage to start watching again 😭 Lately I wish I didn't do that cause now I feel like I'm missing out on the fun lmao- it was really fun to watch because they tend to have a deeper/darker meaning to them, even if it seems to be for younger audiences at first glance, which I find neat.
I don't really remember much from W, since I watched it way back when I was younger, but I remember the acting was great (I think the actor for Philip was only 15 at that time? I've seen that guy in other J-dramas and his acting is amazing). I remember liking W but I just don't really remember what it was about. Maybe I should revisit it sometime.
I think my favorite was Den-O. I'm pretty sure I've watched all of the heisei ones but I can't recall all of the good ones that I liked. I do remember liking the 3 last Heisei ones which I believe were Ghost, Exaid, and Build, but out of those 3, I think Ghost was the best.
ALSO YOU ARE SO RIGHT the kamen rider soundtracks tend to be bangers
Oops I kinda talked too much about myself LMAOA (I tried to shorten this the best I could. i really did. I DELETED 3 PARAGRAPHS LMAO)
No way you used to be a fan AS WELL. Now I feel a bit embarrassed for recommending stuff. Also Den-o is top tier. Deneb is probably one of my favourite kamen rider characters just for how funny he is.
To be fair I was more of a Power Rangers kid growing up. I started off watching mega force when it was still airing and religiously watched the reruns of older stuff like Dino Thunder, which was my favourite.
I stopped watching after a bit because man are kids RUTHLESS. Some of them made fun of me so I stopped watching for a bit. Luckily I have younger siblings who were watching the show up on it so I became a casual viewer, mostly watching for my siblings and then lying at school the next day.
The reason I got into Toku was actually because of a YouTuber that I was subscribed to. I had 0 clue what kamen rider was and they were praising fourze so I thought ‘I’ve seen jojo part 4, this is practically that with superheroes’ and then proceeded to watch the series. I then moved onto the other series like ooo, build,gaim,W,Den-o,ex-aid and blade.
Funny story about my watch through of blade is that I had no context for where most of the memes in the fanbase came from so I watched Blade to mainly understand everything. I had gotten up to the final arc but had to take a break since mock season was going on. When I finished I remember that I rushed home and decided to watch the last arc, despite being very tired. Yeah big mistake. Who knew a bench could make Astral cry but it did
Tumblr media
I’m wondering right now what series to watch now. The smartest decision is to probably catch up to the latest season but I’m probably going to wait until it finishes to binge it. I’m torn on watching a late heisei era show or trying to see more early heisei works. I’ll do what I do best which is spin a wheel and decide what to watch lol.
Nooo man you don’t need to shorten down your thoughts. It’s fun reading this stuff and believe me I’ve been holding back from spamming the dashboard with my random Toku thoughts so you shouldn’t worry about if you’re saying too much. If you want to get back into it the newest season of kamen rider is around the corner so you could start getting back into it from there.

If every main rider got swapped with someone else in their show, who do you think it'd be? (This is because my friend and I were discussing this about Gaim, but found the scenarios of Kouta swapping with Kaito and Micchy equally as enjoyable.)
This is such a fun question, and it's not dissimilar to conversations I've had with my husband, often along the lines of "who in this show is the actual main character." Pondering it, at least with modern Rider, here are some of my thoughts--ok, we will hit the Showa for one, because:
Stronger--Yuriko. Imagine a world where Yuriko was Kamen Rider Stronger (and thus got a proper full-face helmet and therefore a suit actor and could get through the whole show), and Shigeru was her himbo sidekick Tackle (which would be perfect for him as a name because he canonically played college football).
Anyway! On to the modern era. Please note that for the most part I'm not saying, "this character should be Kamen Rider [Whatever] instead," but, "what if the show was Kamen Rider [That Guy] instead of Kamen Rider [This Guy]."
Kuuga--I...genuinely I don't think any other character in that show could replace Godai. He holds a unique place even among modern Riders.
Agito--so Hikawa is already essentially the main character of the show. Honestly, though, I would love to see a version of Agito where Ryou is the lead. Shouichi is notable for being gentle and domestic and non-combative, whereas Ryou is very angry and conflicted and stressed out about what's happening to him. The day being saved by Kamen Rider Gills, Misfit Toy of the Seeds of Agito, would be a fascinating arc.
Ryuki--Ren thinks he's the main character anyway, we'll skip over him, what if the show was Kamen Rider Raia? And our lead was this pacifist with the fucking curse of Cassandra laid upon him, so instead of having no idea what's up he's the only guy who knows what's up? That would be so cool.
555--Takumi is a rare and unusual gift among Rider leads, and I'm not really eager to swap him out for another character, but a version of the story that puts Yuka front and center would kick ass.
Blade--obviously if our lead character isn't Kenzaki then this is a story about Hajime.
Hibiki--I...would love a version of Hibiki where Hibiki is actually the main character.
Kabuto--Kagami is the main character of Kabuto, but a version of the story that truly centers him would be fascinating--if the show was Kamen Rider Gatack and Tendou had to get his approval it'd be a wildly different ballpark.
Den-O--now see my problem with Den-O is that it keeps insisting that the show is Kamen Rider Den-O and not Kamen Rider Zeronos Featuring Den-O.
Kiva--Megumi, for what I think are probably obvious reasons. Let Megumi be Kamen Rider.
Decade--if Tsukasa isn't the lead, then I think this immediately makes the show Kamen Rider TheEnd (spelled like that instead of DiEnd), where you've got focus primarily on Daiki trying to shirk his responsibilities to save all worlds from the Destroyer because he loves him.
W--this one's cheating but I would super enjoy a version of W where Philip and his struggles to contextualize the world are the primary focus, with Shoutaro as his wacky sidekick, instead of the other way round.
OOO--a story that doesn't center Eiji is, I think, absolutely about Gotou trying as hard as he can to Do Things Right.
Fourze--there's potential here for a Kuuga-like story about Kengo slowly destroying himself trying to be a Rider, I think.
Wizard--fuck it, full role swap, Koyomi is Wizard now, confused eyebrows and all, and Haruto is her incredibly shy sidekick.
Gaim--you called out Kaito and Micchi, but I think I'd really enjoy a version of Gaim in which Takatora is the main character and gets to have a little more nuance than "noblesse oblige."
Drive--let Kiriko be Drive. Alternately, Chase should be the main character.
Ghost--Alain would make a wonderful alternate lead, although I think if the writers aren't careful then this ends up with an arc very similar to Takatora's.
Ex-Aid--there is a version of Ex-Aid that lives in my heart where the entire show is about Nico.
Build--I would potentially enjoy a version where Katsuragi doesn't get transformed into Sento and has to start the show knowing the terrible things he's done and trying to rectify them.
Zi-O--cut out the hereditary-royalty thing, but make Tsukuyomi the lead here, traveling through time trying to avert the rise of this terrible warlord who she is unfortunately finding that she likes.
Zero-One--make Yua the inheritor of Hiden, and move Aruto over to AIMS to be the unfortunately competent partner who's always tormenting Fuwa with his jokes. Yua and Izu hanging out would be potent stuff.
Saber--I think Mei should be a Rider. If you've got Yua as Zero-One, then that's a much more serious lead, and so then you can have this goofy woman as Saber and Touma as her sidekick/head cheerleader.
Revice--oh my god where do I even start. Make Hiromi the lead, I don't know. I love Revice but it's such a mess.

A minific of a enemy getting befriended by Gentaro against their will and a few of the other riders saying that they don't have a choice would be funny
Well... he's not an enemy per se... but what if Kagerou the devil meets the friendship monster
"I'm Kisaragi Gentaro, Kamen Rider Fourze! The man who will befriend the whole world!" the man enthusiastically introduced himself. "And you're Ikki's little brother, right?!"
"Ah, unfortunately, Ikki's little brother is a little... preoccupied at the moment. I'm Kagerou, his inner demon." Kagerou's eyes gleamed as he looked the delinquent-looking man up and down. "Oh~ So you are Onii-sama's precious senpai, huh..."
Kagerou. Don't do it. You'll just humiliate yourself. Daiji warned.
Kagerou pointedly ignores his host's advice. "Forget being friends... Why don't you and I have some fun, Gen-chan~"
He had barely finished propositioning the man when he grinned, as bright as the sun, and grabbed his hand. He could only blink as he shook it once, then clasped it, gave him a fistbump, then two more. "Wha...?"
Congratulations, snickered Daiji from where he was taking a nice little break from reality. You've just been friend-zoned by the friendship monster. Kagerou glared at him. Don't look at me like that. I did warn you.
Kagerou stared at his hand, then gave the other Kamen Rider a bewildered look. "...Did you even realize what I was asking you?"
"Oh, yeah, of course I did!" Gentaro saaid cheerily. "I don't do that sort of thing though, except with Kengo! But don't worry, we can still be buds!" He said so earnestly that Kagerou could hardly believe it.
"I think I'm fine, thanks." Kagerou replied. "Friends aren't really my thing..."
Daiji laughed as though he'd just said something outrageous. You say that as if you have a choice, he chuckled. Once he decides he wants to be your pal, you're stuck with him forever. And if you resist, he'll just beat your ass and then befriend you anyway.
Kagerou blinked. "...You did get the part where I said I'm a demon, right?"
Gentaro, if anything, only smiled wider. "That sounds like I'm just gonna have to wear you down, Kagerou."
Kagerou stared at him. "You're fucking insane."

fanfic writer tag game
tagged by @yuneyn, thanks!!
What’s your all-time favorite ship? We have favorites? I'm terrible about having favorites actually lmao, took me until I was 21 to have a favorite song and you want me to have a favorite ship?? I will say that WRed is very fun to write for though. So many feelings.
How many works do you have on AO3? 92, hopefully soon to be 94 as I have one story for a series and an idea for something I'm very excited for.
What’s your total AO3 word count? 390,528.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1) Operation Get My Senpais Together: a fic about Rokkaku from Cherry Magic finally being like "hmmm maybe Kurodachi would be cute together".
2) Feelings, Failures, Adventures, Dreams: a prompt list of my own making, where I take Cameron Philip lyrics and use them to write Cherry Magic oneshots (and new song in like a day yesssssssssssssss).
3) Kurosawa Wants to Kabedon: a Cherry Magic smut fic that I'm frankly embarrassed to read now and it was one of my first smuts I think.
4) Kurosawa Kiyoshi/Adachi Yuichi: a Cherry Magic body-switching fic, as I realized no one was going to make the food I wanted. I really like how this one came out.
5) Kurosawa and Kurabe: Cherry Magic/Alice in Borderland crossover, the happy one.
Do you reply to comments, why or why not? I reply to initial comments always, and responses to comments often, unless I can't think of a response, which isn't often.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Probably a oneshot in Feelings, Failures, Adventures, Dreams, titled "good thing i cried all my tears out (it's clear you don't want me anymore)", where Kurosawa from Cherry Magic types and deletes his feelings to Adachi via Discord.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? I pretty much only write happy endings so...I'm not sure. I guess my wedding fics?
Do you write crossovers? I was like KNOWN for my Cherry Magic crossovers in the early days of the fandom, and before that I wrote this giant Thai BL crossover because I like people being friends. Now I'm writing toku crossovers, if that even really counts considering Toei does that themselves.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? I dunno if it was hate per se, but I got a comment about my Fourze bridal carry fic that wasn't even on the correct fic, so that was the only comment I ever deleted. But I will maintain that the Shun/Miu relationship was forced heterosexuality and Miu is better with Yuuki. And there was a weird compliment about using my idea for their fic, which, go ahead, but also why is your idea so like...out of character.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yeah and it's because of a very weird conversation about facials where I had to break out old prescriptions to make a point. That was the tipping point.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? If you want to steal my work....why? My most popular fic was literally written so I could get some more views (aka the Cameron Philip one), and it's STILL not as popular as other fics that were written before.
Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, two of them! A translation of Sometimes It Isn't Sexy (but i still love you) into Chinese for the Cherry Magic fandom, and just take a look through my eyes, everything changes (you'll be amazed what you find) into Vietnamese for the Lupat fandom.
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Sort of? Two, maybe three of my fics are based on convos about the show with friends that I turned into stories (with permission!), so if that counts, then yes. Otherwise, no.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? If I start a story and publish it, it's getting finished. Even if it takes a while. (Glares at Didn't You Know Love Could Shine This Bright? (well smile because you're the deer in the headlights))
What are your writing strengths? No idea I just write and send it to the void.
What are your writing weaknesses? Probably sentence length and structure. Again, I just write and send it to the void. People talk about drafts and outlines and I'm like "uhhhhhhhhhh what." I tend to go over my writing like once and then send it out and if there's mistakes there's mistakes. Too impatient to really edit very well.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I've only done that twice, once where the character is listening to Thai, and once where a character writes German on a whiteboard, and I put apologies in the notes. But also I do think if it's dialogue, it doesn't have to be perfect, because I'll be talking in English and be like "wait that doesn't make grammatical sense" but keep going. Because language.
What was the first fandom you wrote for? Love Alarm, the only Korean fandom I've written for, because I was so frustrated how he looked at the other guy vs how he looked at the girl. I was just like "this is a conspiracy." Still haven't watched season 2.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? Again, favorites? There's definitely fics of my own I reread and then there's fics I don't look at though. I reread my Lupat fics, and I like my Kamen Rider Bridal Carry series (which, I need to write my next one). A lot of my Cherry Magic fics are hit or miss. I dunno.

I've watched like 2 episodes of ex-aid (and the crossover episodes with super sentai within them, just because, without even the context of the rider stories lol. So far I watched the driver x ninninger xover, gaim x toqger xover, ex-aid x kyuranger xover, decade x shinkenger xover, ghost x zyuohger xover and that gokaiger x kamen rider xover. [it definitely feels more like a decade xover with gokaiger instead of it being a fourze xover lol)
I'm also contemplating watching drive, maybe give ryuki a watch. Ghost is also on my watch list.
Okay so since you listed Decade as an option that’s my rec. Watch Decade it’s the only series ever that matters at all/j.
Serious Decade rec: I honestly think you should watch it before Phase One bc the comparisons hurt it. Decade is about a deeply flawed heroes talking even more flawed alt version of Main Riders and making them into real heroes, becoming a real hero himself along the way while developing a small harem of a gay thief, a woman with virtually no individual identity (except ironically in the Inoue eps thanks sir), and a sunshine boy who had to learn to be a sunshine boy. Also it had the multiverse.
And yeah SHT is definitely a Gokai x Decade crossover, since they were the only two seasons with legacy powers at the time. It was actually written by Decade’s (second) head writer, Yonemura.
Ex-Aid is a great starter show. I started there, I got two friends into Rider from there. It has interesting characters, an absolutely batshit premise (gamer doctors vs viruses), and is a fun ride, especially if you’re going in blind to Rider. It has its flaws but I still love it. Hilariously I started it for the Kyuranger crossover. Ended up dropping Kyuranger for Ex-Aid. Ironically Kyuranger is still my #1 Sentai. But yeah, I do suggest Ex-Aid as a 1st or otherwise early show.
Drive… I can’t recommend it. I found the whole thing reprehensible, largely for spoiler reasons. I am also not a Gou fan. You mentioned GP, the 2015 Taisen with Ninnin, in your other ask. I’ll get there in that ask, but ironically Drive is not the show to watch for answers.
Drive might work if you like procedurals, or if you’re willing to accept Gou as he is, which is constantly obnoxious. And willing to deal with the fact that this entire season might not have happened if the mentor didn’t turn his back on an abuse victim. It might work if you grow to like the characters enough to enjoy the plot. I know people who like Drive and it’s usually because they loved Shinnosuke and Chase! Which if you can, you’re hopefully set!
Ryuki is dark. It is a show about a death battle for the sake of a wish. It is a tragedy. Not everyone survives, and there is no way to undo this… and yet. I love it! The characters are all fun, the tragedy is to a reasonable degree and has a PURPOSE, not just there to be grimdark. It’s just a good show!
Ghost is not a well liked season but that’s because it’s very light and low on budget. For what it is, it’s great. I have it in my top 3 phase 2s. This one can wait on the watch list, but it’s worth the watch. It’s a show that understands the heart of Kamen Rider without being heavy handed. And also has a very sweet protag who gets far too much hate. You’re a Sentai fan though so I suspect you’ll like him
And of those 4 shows I’d suggest this order
Ghost
Ex-Aid
Drive
Decade
Ryuki
Anyways very long ramble but. Yeah!

Ninja Steel is Fun Actually or How I Learned To Stop Worrying & Love Victor Vincent.
1. The season seems keen on chilling out for most of its run with a dash of goofiness, each episode being its own adventure with the thinnest of Myth arc sown together. The Ninja Rangers themselves don’t have to answer to any higher power aside from the semi-sentient Nexus. No Zordon and especially no Gosei. They feel like high schoolers who choose for themselves to be heroes.
This is honestly my favorite kind of team similar not unlike with Lost Galaxy. They’re not Rangers because they were bestowed these powers by somebody but because the powers deemed them worthy. While Mic plays mentor, he and Redbot are mostly two Alphas working as one. It feel like an unofficial after-school club down to how their base is located in the high school ala Fourze.
Mic Kanic was a fun character, owing to Kelson Henderson’s being able to show his on-screen chops after being on voice-over duty. He’s the one who dispenses the moral of the story not unlike with Keeper, illustrating his points through reverse engineering them not unlike... a mechanic. Damn, that’s good.
Unlike with Keeper, he doesn’t feel as though he’s “there” for the sake of moralizing. He’s the one forging the Ninja Power Stars whenever the Prism displays a new weapon to wield along with Redbot. He doesn’t pretend to be smarter than the others, he’s just helping teens out in his own weird way. Not that his shape-shifting couldn’t have been played with in more episodes IMO.
2. The episodic nature feel far more like a feature than a flaw. In addition to the Rangers being high-schoolers, we have ourselves a light-on-plot format not too dissimilar to Mighty Morphin’ way back when. Now as an anniversary season. this can feel like a problem when many expect it to be “Go big or go home.” I get that yet... I also enjoy how one could go back to any episode in isolation.
That’s not to say that I don’t feel like it can’t feel held back at time in adhering to this format. I can say that giving each Ranger more pronounced character arcs while maintaining this structure wouldn’t have been impossible with a bit more focus on Story Editing. Preston reconciling with his father could’ve been set up if Marcus Tien had more of a presence up to that episode for one thing.
3. Victor and Monty. Where do I even begin with these two goobers? Chris Reid and Caleb Bendit go absolute ham with their characters ever scene they get. The latter is an over enthusiastic nerd who I swear has the hots for Mr. Vincent. The former has such a flare to him in bringing this young Gaston to life with such delicious arrogance.
Now... I get why they’re (charitably speaking) not exactly fan-favorites. Their C-Plot antics can feel divorced from the story compared to a lot of Bulk and Skull’s escapades way back when. To say nothing of some of their... bowel-based comedy routines.
Yet for me, there was just an unabashedly enthusiasm to their wacky hijinks that I could never hate for the life of me. They could be so juvenile yet did it without ever feeling an ounce of shame. Even their fart jokes don’t just settle for less.
One episodes they’re cocooned by a spider monster and float into the sky in their inflated wrappings. Another they try to turn the entire class into one big Dutch Oven to avoid a test they didn’t study for... only for the teacher to pass out gas masks. The cherry on top? They don’t get any.
It leaves me in a sense of “Oh my god,” but in the best way possible. I shouldn’t like them. I really shouldn’t but... I’m too much of a late 00s kid to grow out of it. Go ahead and call out my bad taste, I don’t care.
Now this isn’t to say that there were things that couldn’t have been improved upon from small adjustment to pretty major tweaks that I’ve often pondered.
1. The villains were a tad hit or miss. Odious was a good Star Scream in how she schemed behind the scenes and got the likes of Ripcon to take the fall when her fake Aiden plan didn’t precisely go as planned. Cosmo Royale is a huge ham in the best way as Galaxy Warrior’s host, playing up each monster of the day.
That said, Galvanax and Ripcon were the weaker of the lot. The latter could’ve had more of a rivalry with Brody. Maybe as a former master who gave him the skills his father couldn’t, leading them to clash when out in the field. It would help him stand out as a villain.
The former should’ve been less of a gruff brute like Sledge and more watching from the shadows ala Doctor Claw, stepping in when stuff got real like the season finale. The camera could hide him from view until he stepped into the fray. He could also do with a smooth yet menacing voice so to speak. You know, hype up his final showdown in the end.
2. Brody’s time is space could’ve been expanded upon. Perhaps a few of Galaxy Warriors’ contestants crossed paths with the young ninja and are in a conflict of interests. Be it a noble warrior or a former foe. Again, Ripcon could sort of be the Shadow Weaver to Brody’s She-Ra of sorts.
Wait... does that make Odious Catra?
Um...
Additionally, maybe show how out of touch he is with Earth customs due to living on an alien ship for a bit of comic relief. Think Super Sentai’s comedic Reds but more chill and far less obnoxious, being a good leader even with his eccentricities. You could have him be the ones to weird out Victor and Monty.
3. Sledge’s crew should’ve been a rival to Galaxy Warriors in Super Ninja Steel as they catch onto her ruse and return. You could actually have him bring over the Galactic Ninjas with Fox Bots replacing the Viviks, making them more of a big deal.
Odious would go along with it to boost rating for the show and attract more warriors for her benefit. She could try to play both side leading up to the finale with Badonna as a spy so to speak. She has magic so while not let her shape-shift.
4. I get the sense Dane Romero was meant to be dead but it was deemed a tad dark and brought back since they had three Akaningers to adapt. He could’ve acted as a secondary mentor for the Rangers as he caught up with his sons and taught them more advanced skills.
Despite this, Ninja Steel was a fun ride even if it was a touch mellow. I feel like some of the hate is a touch overblow for the sake of hyperbole but I don’t fault anybody for finding this to not be their cup of tear. The anniversary element is another post entirely so I’ll save that for later.
Alright, guys, tear me apart.

Cina’s Top 5 toys of the year
So, getting right into it; that wasn’t a bad year for me for toys! It’s the first time I’ve had a job in a while and hence more disposable income, so since Transformers this was the first time I could really start digging into figures a fair bit more. Not quite in the realm of buying DX stuff yet so none of that’ll be on this list, and all of this is toys I personally bought rather than things that released in 2020 (though most of them are).
5. S.H. Figuarts Shinkkochou Seihou Momotaros
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun figure. Fun, fun, FUN fucking figure! A lot of people have been calling this guy one of the best SHF releases ever just for how much you can get out of them and I can’t blame them. Momotaros’ energy lends itself extremely well to this figure which uses its insane articulation - mostly unhindered due to Momo’s simple design - and fun hand options to pull off just about any crazy pose from Den-O you can think of. I haven’t been able to get much out of him due to being thrown into a hellish schedule right after, but what little play I have been able to have with the guy is so stupidly fun. Can’t not love him!
4. S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider Fourze
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Might look a bit weird to have this guy come after Momotaros. In an objective sense he’s a worse figure in every way -- he’s not as articulate, not as well-detailed, old SHF’s advantage of loads of accessories isn’t really a thing with this release (you basically just get the rocket and drill modules), and naturally he’s just a very outdated figure. But... man, personally, I just can’t deny how much I LOVE looking over at him! He was the last part in completing my much-wanted W-OOO-Fourze team-up display this year and he seriously looks the part any time I give him a glance. Despite his size he’s got such a wonderful shelf presence and his modules are so fun I have to put him on this list. At the end of the day it’s about how a toy makes you feel rather than its Objective Qualities, and SHF Fourze makes me feel happy!
3. Lightning Collection Abarekiller (”Dino Thunder White”)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This guy fucks? He fucks. He fucks so fucking hard. It’s difficult to get across just how insanely much the replacement headsculpt improves him and just how much personality he has! Granted, I’d like for Hasbro to throw me some more hand options for a little more personality, but I’ll take what I can get -- and what I get is a beautiful figure of a supreme bastard who looks great no matter what I do with him.
2. Figure-Rise Standard Kamen Rider Den-O and Figure-Rise Standard Kamen Rider W
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cheating? This is kinda cheating, but... aaaagh I have to do this! I will say off the bat that I like Den-O more and thinks he’s the best FRS release yet -- a few looseness problems on the wrist and teething problems building aside, he’s a downright perfect representation of Sword Form that then decides that’s not enough, and for like £2 extra throws in an entire Plat Form change that even works its way into the build in a fun way! It was wonderful seeing this announced next to the very expensive Seihou and I’ve only loved it every day since.
And W? Not quite as cool, but like Fourze I can’t deny just how much shelf presence he has. It’s an iconic and well-loved design for a reason; it stands out and the scarf only makes it even better. You can do ANYTHING with him and he’ll look cool, and while I don’t get much use out of it myself, I have to applaud how perfectly and smoothly both the form change and W Xtreme gimmicks were pulled off. Both of these kits I had so much fun building and so much fun playing with and looking at after, and for £20 each, this is an insanely good line that’s only getting better.
1. Shinkkochou Seihou Kamen Rider Kuuga (Decade Ver.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It couldn’t have been anything else.
I could have gone for the FRS. That’s an amazing looking figure that would achieve pretty much anything I would want for a Kuuga and having the Amazing Mighty version, yea, it’s a fun build and a good figure. But because I have that, I can also compare it to this and say... oh my god I am happy I went for this.
When it’s my favourites, I like to go the extra mile and get The Premium version of it. That applies for OOO, that applies for Build, and it applies to Kuuga -- a really, really important show to me that I just keep on finding more to love about. So this had become one of my grails for a good part of this year, and hence when I finally got him in hand? Pure elation. I genuinely just couldn’t believe I was handling him, I couldn’t believe that I was so lucky as to have found him on my birthday, and for my girlfriend to help me get him! There’s illegal amounts of sentimentality going on with this figure, and like Momotaros up there; yeah, he lives up to the hype with Seihou’s over-the-top dedication to articulation and detail. I look at this figure, and this just IS Kuuga; this just is Godai Yusuke and does everything I could reasonably want him to -- so he’s quite permanently front and center of my second display, cos I don’t wanna stop looking at a figure this good and this important to me!

Kamen Rider Movie Wars #1-#6
Tumblr media
So... what is all this stuff?
When I decided on starting my Kamen Rider watch I was determined to watch as much as I could, everything seemed okay but there was always a huge problem: the movies.
I didn't know where to look at for information so most of my research was done in the Wikia and if you visit the Kamen Rider Wikia you'll see that the way they list the movies IS CONFUSING AS HELL so I set my mind in watching only the stand-alone movies and any extra released after the show ended that wasn't part of any crossover project.
I decided to do this way to try to avoid spoilers of the previous series that I haven't watched, not necessarily because I didn't want to know what exactly happened in those series, but because I didn't want to have a certain impression of a Rider before I could watch their own show and don't be so judgemental about it before actually knowing that character and the set of extras that'll orbit around it.
Tumblr media
But then we cut to 4 months later and I'm watching a video on youtube about W and they comment about how in the crossover movie they explain the events of Beginning Night and I go "shit, these movies DO have necessary information, I think I'll need to watch them orz", so here I am.
Before I go talking about these movies let me just say I think they're all pretty stupid. Like, even calling them movies is a low move, they're extended episodes of each series that converge on an awful CGI battle scene at the end, it's not a lot of fun considering the thing that sells the movie usually don't last longer than 30 minutes. I think the thing that just really pisses me off is how they aren't very considerate of people who didn't watch these movies and they'll usually bring up in the show events that only happened in the movie to the show itself, don't explain them, and expect that the audience will already know what the things they're referencing means. I know it seems like a dumb complain since I'm watching these seasons after they aired so I can watch the movies in the proper time if I want to, the thing is I shouldn't need to watch a movie to understand a thing that happened in the show, the movies should be extra material. And I'm not saying these movies shouldn't be canon, but they shouldn't be integrated with the main continuity in a way that would exclude people who didn't get the opportunity to watch said movies to understand them.
Tumblr media
But that's enough for my rant let's get to these movies.
Movie War 2010
So, for the original Movie Wars, I watched only the W's portion, I didn't watch either the Decade part or the conclusion because of the reasons I mentioned up there.
This movie was more or less just a huge flashback, this is also the movie that pisses me off the most because it introduced Skull and the Lost Driver that are things that would become key elements not just for the show but also for their movie and well I already made a huge paragraph about this issue so I won't repeat myself.
I honestly don't remember much about it, but as many problems as I have with this whole set up, I enjoyed this movie. Huge part of it was because Skull was there and he's cool as heck, I'll admit, but I had fun. Though nothing will change my mind that this should've happened in the show not isolated in a movie.
Tumblr media
Movie War Core
The next one in line is Movie War Core, I had more fun with this one but this was still pretty bad.
W's portion of it was pretty decent, seeing more of Skull was great, and it was also nice seeing what would lead up to the events in the Accel movie. My biggest problem here is that Akiko never seemed so against the Kamen Rider before so it seemed a little off that she would freak out like that only now, but oh well, it was still nice seeing Skull, I wish we had a movie exclusive to him he's so cool he deserves it (I know it's probably late for me to ask for this, just let me leave XD).
Sadly from that moment on the movie got really boring. I wasn't interested in the attempt of reviving Nobunaga plot, I feel like things were happening way too fast in that, and also Kamen Rider Core was just awful as a final villain, I hated that.
Tumblr media
Movie War Megamax
The Fourze x OOO movie is probably my least favorite of the bunch. I really didn't buy that thing of a Kamen Rider from the future coming out of a black hole after meteors were falling, the implication that the medals weren't destroyed in OOO's final battle kinda weakens the ending of the series and the fact they didn't explain Ankh being back just shows how this plot wasn't very well thought. Also, the Kamen Rider from the future coming back at the end just to give OOO the Super TaToBa medals was very dumb, that form also doesn't look good either.
And the Fourze portion was awful because they decide to "give" Gentarou a "girlfriend" and that was just the most stupid plot EVER. They gave the girl a rider form but even that they screwed up, it still baffles me they made the girl attack with her butt. I know this is a show that has primarily boys in mind but you don't have to make every female character like that, especially in a live-action where real people have to act that with their bodies.
Gosh, I hate this movie so much.
Tumblr media
Movie War Ultimatum
The next movie wasn't as bad, it was just way longer than it should've been. I watched the director's cut and that is almost two hours, that's absurdly long for a movie where not a whole lot happens. This movie was also pretty weird to watch because they did a whole bunch of homages to older tokusatsu, and while having those didn't make the movie any less good or bad it was still off, you could tell those weren't creatures that originated in this world/franchise. I also wasn't really here for this time travel concept, especially in here it was done in a very messy way, it wasn't cute.
Tumblr media
But you know, for the part while I was still paying attention I enjoyed it. The Fourze cast is way more bearable when they're not stupid teenagers, seeing them as adults was quite fun, I like how it started like an actual action movie with Ryusei and that girl from the Fourze movie doing some spy work, and I also like to see that he and the goth girl still have their thing. Gentarou as a teacher looked like a mess, but I like that they put him to be a teacher, it makes a good amount of sense for his character. The students were also a bit interesting so watching Fourze was actually fun for me for the first time! But once again Fourze was there being nasty and doing a whole bunch of close-ups in the girls' tights during the fighting while one of those two was supposed to be a teenager in school and that's just gross. Nadeshiko also comes back for this afterward and ew the butt attacks came back, she even jumped at a monster once where it looked like she was reverse cowgirling him and that was very uncomfortable to watch.
Tumblr media
The Wizard portion was quite decent as well, I like the concept of the "farm of monsters", I wish they had used more of these smart ideas in the actual show, Poitrine was fun and I like the reveal that in the end, she was actually the Donut Shop keeper, but I think this portion was longer than it needed to be, especially considering they don't do much. But I guess this is the best way to describe this movie. The joint part was pretty bland, but I like that they had a good amount of out of suit fighting, that kept my attention for a while.
Fateful Sengoku Movie Battle
This was an odd one, kinda like Core this one had a decent first portion and a meh one for the current season but overall it was still pretty bland. It was good seeing an actual epilogue for Wizard, I wanna complain about jetpacking in this plot because Haruto was in Brazil for some reason and then in the next scene he was in Japan again, but he has a teleport spell so I can't call them out. But it sure was funny to see they randomly put a Rider on Brazil for the second time in this movie series. The thing of using a 3D pen to make another Koyomi and make her the villain was a fun twist, but I feel like it wasn't used at its fullest.
The Gaim portion was just awful, I didn't care for this parallel world where they revived a Sengoku battle, I feel like this is one of the things that works better with people who actually have knowledge of Japanese History, but I believe that even if you have knowledge this would still such because we're in those Gaim early days where the characters aren't very likable yet so it's really not enjoyable to watch.
This movie also introduced crossover power-ups and Holy Jesus, this is probably one of the worst ideas this franchise has ever made because none of them look good. And speaking of things that don't look good, they ruined a very good design Bujin Gaim had going on for it in order to make him this weird CGI flower thing that doesn't look good, neither intimidating, it was just awful.
Tumblr media
Movie War Full Throttle
Last in the list is the Gaim x Drive movie and while this isn't the movie I disliked the most, this is the movie I less cared about, this is the movie I less remember about, which is weird because I watched it twice. I think my problem comes from the villains for this movie, I didn't buy the idea of this apparently alien race defeating an actual space god and capturing another one, I also didn't care for their designs they were pretty bland. But this movie gave Gaim an actual closure so I guess it wasn't so bad. The Drive portion was weird because it seemed very disconnected from the plot. I like this story and I like Lupin's design, but this should've been, if not an actual episode, a TV special, especially considering they give Krim's backstory about how he ended up being in the belt and nothing can change my mind that this should've been explained in the actual show.
Ironically enough, the part of the movie I remember the most is when Gaim and Drive use each other's powers and they get in those awful crossover forms. Again, this idea was a mistake, Drive's hat looks like a fucking trash can lid, it's awful.
Tumblr media
Just like these movies. I had fun at moments, but I'm not gonna lie, I wish I could have those hours back, these movies aren't good, they completely drained my energy. I think I'm gonna wrap up for now, what are your thoughts on the movie wars, let me know in the comments. I'm gonna try to be happy again now. I'll see you guys tomorrow for the second Drive review.

Note
Thank you for your tags on my Kiva post, they were much appreciated. Do you have anymore Kamen Rider thoughts you would like to share.
This is from the ones I actually saw:
Kamen Rider Kuuga: Love it. the designs are simplistic but work wonderful. I really like how much of a nice person the main character is and love the fights using the bike. I find the villains boring because they don’t really do anything other than kill people and the big bad doesn’t show up until the very end.
Kamen Rider Agito: I love the use of separate plotlines on this one. It drags in places, but I like the feeling of “stuff is happening” rather than every episode feeling like waiting for the monster of the week to show up.
I love the choreography on this one, might be my favorite. On top of that, I feel the villains have a lot more personality, even though you have no idea what the hell their deal is for most of the series.
Kamen Rider Dragon Knight: I am cheating on this one: I did not see Ryuki, but saw the americanized version. Overall, liked it, altough sometimes felt like a mess, not helped by characters introduced only to be “killed” almost immediatly.
Kamen Rider Blade: The definition of “the plot is moving forward, i swear!” it’s a show where you THINK something will happen, but it doesn’t. And to compensate, you have the characters fighting each other or changing sides. That being said, the series feels like a more refined Ryuki/Dragon Knight: Less riders, each one with it’s own set of cards, the powers are easier to understand, etc. Woudlnt’ call it bad but it took me until Leangle to find it interesting.
Characters are mostly fine. But Garren feels like the most inconsistent character in the entire show and I am mostly Meh on Blade. I like chalice and I wish we had more of Leangle.
The second Opening is among my favorites, though.
Kamen Rider Den-O: Meh. Mostly Meh. I don’t particularly like it. I don’t like Ryotaro (altough Takeru Satoh IS a highly skilled actor), I find the time travel stuff overly-complicated and I STILL have no idea what the villains were trying to acomplish, exactly.
It doesn’t help that the main villain shows up NEARLY THE VERY END of the series and dumps a bunch of claims that are not explained properly.
I don’t like the rider forms. I don’t find the monster designs particularly interesting and I find a lot of the characters annoying. I understand the series is intended to be funnier and more light-hearted. I don’t find it funny on the slightest.
Kamen Rider kiva: Flawed, but I really like it. as I mentioned, my favorite part is by far is the designs, particularly Kiva’s. His final form is probably my favorite final form period. Stylish, imposing, but not overly designed. But I like all the characters. I love the use of past/present storylines, I like the characters and I don’t care that most of the series is Monster of the Week until the love triangle show sup. I really enjoyed most of the series and Otoya’s plot in the past was a ton of fun.
Kamen Rider W: Really good. It’s mostly “2-episode stand-alone monster of the week” stuff, but it is used effectively, with really good victims of the week and the whole “Private Detective” theme. It also helps that, for once, the villains do get focus and we get to see what their plans are.
Sure, we don’t get the entire motivation within the first few episodes, but it is nice to see the villains going “yes, there is a reaosn why we are doing things this way”.
Kamen Rider OOO: Another with “2 episode-arc stand-alone monster of the week” stuff. Love the dynamic between Ankh and Eiji and I find OOO pretty cool. Altough I find it hilarious that it is practically canon that OOO’s base form is worthless, which I don’t think it was a thing since Kuuga.
The show DOES want to seem like there is serialization going on, with the end of every episode giving a count of how many medals the heroes have but... no, it is not. most episodes are self-contained and do not have an impact on the overall plot. It is also the only series that made me go “I want the toys”
I SHOULD dislike the villains, since like 75% of their dialogues is “I want medals. As A Greeed I want medals. I desire. I represent desire without control. GET IT!?”  but I like them a lot. I also like they actually do stuff and take part in fights. they aren’t constantly in the background being vague.
Kamen Rider Birth is BORING. i don’t like the designs nor the two dudes who get the belts and the whole “using common cells” always seemed incredibly impractical to me.
kamen Rider Fourze: Mostly meh, but saved by an overall pretty fun cast. It also had the character’s main base on the moon, which is seven levels of awesome. I wish it had done more with Fourze’s powers. A lot of the time it felt like “here is a power. Done”. WHich I get. it’s supposed to sell toys and you have 40 switches to sell + all the gadgets. I just wish they had found a better way to integrate them.
I did LOVE the crossover with OOO. That one was just perfect and the final fight was one of the coolest fights in any kamen rider series. i don’t even care it looks like a ps2-era cutscene. it’s just that good.
Kamen Rider Wizard: I like Wizard’s design... also INFINITY......... well, that’s pretty much for positives.
Dull, uninteresting cast, REALLY pushing it on the “2 episode monster of the week” stuff. characters just sat around doing nothing waiting for the plot to start.
Not a single interesting one-shot character. the main villains were generic and dull. The main big bad is there to be vague and seemingly threatening. i REALLY was forcing myself to finish it.
Kamen Rider Gaim: One of the best written Kamen Rider series. the characters are complex and interesting and there is more serialization this time around. There is a ton of riders fighting riders, but this time it doesn’t seem without reason: Characters are consistent and always do things that are logical FOR THEM to do.
highlight for me is the fight between Gaim and Marika, which is one of the single best rider fights in the entire franchise. it’s well choreographed, it’s tense and the conclusion doesn’t feel forced.
That is anothign thing I can say: Tense moments DO feel tense. scenes have weight to them. Both because of the strong writing as well as the strong acting.
Kamen Rider Build (yeah I skipped like three series after Gaim): Really good at making it seem like stuff is happening.
By this I mean that stuff WILL happen and characters WILL be pro-active, do stuff and move around- But the plot itself will remain unchanged for another 5 episodes.
This is not a criticism. I preffer a show that is static, but has the characters trying to be pro-active, rather than the characters sitting around doing nothing and waiting for the plot to happen.
I am eh on the designs. I like Night Rogue (Lucky me he is completely discarded by the end...) but everyone else is...  just eh.
I liekt he characters and the overall theme of what makes one a hero and all that stuff.

I just watched the first part of the Kamen Rider Brain special.
I’m. Well, it sure is a thing that’s happened. I don’t really know how many people care about spoilers for these shorts, but I’ll use a cut anyway.
So, first off, the re-used suits.
I am so upset that Protodrive gets to look THIS good in green. Not that it looks good, but that it’s for BRAIN. Toei why.
The monster suits... It’s kind of fun, actually.
They’ve ‘brought back’ Graphite’s red form, a Ganma Superior, Cancer, and... I’m PRETTY sure that the green one is Gremlin? (goes to check.) Yeah, it’s Gremlin. So! That’s pretty cool!
The only real problem is how I can’t tell who the other two are.
The red one with shoulder spikes looks incredibly familiar, but I simply can. not. place him. It’s so frustrating, because I feel like I definitely know who he is, but I can’t... find... hang on. I had earlier thought Phoenix, because I can only remember the basics of the Wizard monsters. Despite currently watching Wizard. It’s not him, or Sagittarius - the red made me think that, that’s all.
Except... with the meta jokes that they’re cracking, we might be in a ‘one per season’ method? Of the seasons represented so far... Ex-Aid, Ghost, Fourze, and Wizard I’ve already got. Drive is, of course, covered. The red-with-spikes and the white-with-antennae, though. I CAN’T place them.
So, the remaining seasons are W, OOO, Gaim, and Build. I know Red isn’t from OOO, but... well, it has been quite a while since i watched Gaim, so...
FINALLY! Demushu’s evolved form! THAT’S who he is!
Now, to puzzle out the white buggy-looking-guy.... hm. He’s not a Dopant, Yummy, or Smash, so that’s the remainder of the kaijin I’d recognize.
Not being able to figure this out is only made worse by him being the one to actually talk.
I don’t know why I’m obsessing over this of all things. Maybe it’s because this two-parter is just. Crack fic in it’s purest form.
Finally. The... piece de resistance, if you will.
Chris Peppler’s character isn’t Krim Steinbelt.
Ohhhh no. That would be too easy.
He’s “Professor Crystal Peppler.”
END ME. JUST. WHY.
Is this retribution against people for the Pepsiman jokes they made about RabbitTank Sparkling? Did they seriously just take advantage of his actual name, and name him Crystal Pepsi.
Am I thinking too far into it? PROBABLY. Am I going to stop? NO.

usually i type up “final thoughts” posts like, immediately after i finish a show. usually i’ve already made up my mind about how i feel, i guess. but kr build is... a tough one to wrap my head around.
i went into build needing it to be really good. for me personally, rider hasn’t been truly great since fourze. i’ve definitely liked certain seasons in between. but i haven’t loved them. and so this was me kinda placing all my hopes on this 1 show to tell me that rider still had the potential to be incredible.
and... it was, in some ways. mainly in terms of character - it’s been a while since i’ve loved a main rider OR a secondary as much as i love our best match boys. their relationship is something i hadn’t realized how much we’d been missing in this franchise. we hadn’t had that powerful main/secondary romance fated connection since... decade, i guess, and nothing quite like ryuga & sento since kagami & tendou. even then, there’s only so far i can take that comparison. bc ryusen really is pretty incomparable to the rest of heisei rider relationships. build has a lot of showa leanings but it’s the main duo that reminds me the most of the olden days.
i mean tell me this isn’t some build lads dialogue right here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the rest of the cast has so many other standouts - sawa, who despite being severely underutilized is still wildly interesting and unlike any lady in rider in the past few years. gentoku and his several weird phases each of them iconic in their own way. evolt, who entertained me more than any central villain in rider ever has. (thank you papa dan the capitalist man for paving the road for more genuinely fun big bads. your contribution was invaluable)
soichi. though why i love him so much i’ll get into in a moment.
the way the relationships & connections are woven together in build is astonishing to me. the way misora’s childhood interests informed the fullbottles (ok, sure, a lot of That was half-assed as far as explanations go, but on the base level there are some affecting ideas in there). the way the best match ft. her favorite animal then named sento. the way sento & ryuga were seemingly destined to meet from early on. the way sento was built by evolt, and the way that was all slowly erased as he was rebuilt by people who loved him. the way evolt’s manipulation of his “proteges” so to speak mirrors nanba and his “children.” all these themes of being put on a preset path by some dark or terrible power or person, and having to fight to free yourself from it.
there are so many beautifully complex things going on in build. the ties into real world politics. the way the pandora box doesn’t turn people berserker violent but instead makes them lose their human empathy, makes them scheming and cruel. gives them imperialist notions of the ultimate satisfaction being war and conquest. the blatant “here, see for yourself, kids” about why wars happen - not for the greater good but because people in power want them to - and how innocent people will always get caught in the crossfire and be turned into little more than weapons to be disposed of at someone’s whim.
there is so much happening in build.
there is too much happening in build.
in the end, it throws so much at the screen that it was never all going to stick. you could make entire shows out of minor parts of kr build. the nanba children, ryuga’s origins, vernage and the dead civilization of fcking mars!! these could all be entire premises on their own. in build, these things are almost an afterthought. it’s dizzying, at best. frustrating, at worst. even moreso when you consider that clearly mr muto needed to burn time somehow before the endgame, which is the only explanation i can come up with for the collecting lost bottles nonsense and all that ungodly boring shit with sento’s dad.
how do you look at this show you’ve made, which has about 50 incredibly interesting ideas too many, and decide to ignore all of those in favor of dad drama, toku’s favorite dull as dirt oft-recycled plot concept? it’s mind boggling to me. and to think that time could’ve been spent deepening characters & relationships, too. letting sawa talk to utsumi. doing Anything with utsumi to establish some kind of consistent personality, to make us actually care when he’s revealed to have technically died in the human sense and had his free will stripped from him many episodes prior. letting misora & kazumi have a normal goddamn conversation for once. treating misora as a person with wants of her own and not just a cute little prop to stand around and cry over others.
letting soichi wake the fuck up!!
the intriguing tragedy of soichi is something that i kept hoping and wishing that build might address. being trapped inside your own body for a decade, watching someone pose as you, and with such a spot-on impression that no one notices at all. the helplessness, knowing that this entity is plotting something terrible for everyone on earth and just. not being able to do a thing about it. but the emotions most of all - what did he feel for sento & ryuga & sawa while he was trapped? was it real, if he had no say in it, if he could hear them but they couldn’t hear him? and what did he really feel towards evolt, his only actual 2-sided conversation partner for 10 whole years? how well did he know him? what wild knowledge of evolt’s weaknesses could he have imparted if he’d just WOKEN UP!!
and now, with the ending, it’s like it never happened at all. i suppose the idea going around is that someday they might remember. but that’s just... so nebulous. it’s not a merge of worlds if one is just gone. i’d hoped so much that certain outcomes might have carried over, just with different causes. gentoku’s father still being dead, for example. in the new world he wouldn’t have been killed by evolt but instead in, say, a political assassination.
it just all feels too simple. all that pain and strife just wiped away. maybe it’s hypocritical to complain about this as a ryuki fan, but. in ryuki, resets were established as a thing that could happen. and via the setup of the rider battle, what other option was there to end the series satisfactorily?
here in build, we were told that the worlds would combine, and that evolt would never have existed. but evolt was not the singular source of villainy in all the universe. this show which took so many thought-provoking risks early on is now apparently telling me that in a world without evolt, humanity is totally at peace. nanba was never affected by the pandora box’s light. he was just goddamn evil, because sometimes people are. i loved that about his portrayal. in a world with no war to profit off of, this man should by all accounts probably be trying to start one himself.
but that’s not the world we see in the final ep of build. instead, everyone is simply normal and happy, the terrible things that shaped them in another reality seemingly having never occurred at all, even the things (re: nanba children) that by all accounts still should have.
it’s a disappointment. it feels like the easy way out.
but at the same time holy shit that ryuga & sento romance ending and the idea of the others even just potentially getting their memories back is like my IDEAL tropey shit i am so into that stuff oh my god dude!!! i cried so fucking hard just thinking about it!!
... so. yeah. conflicted might be the word for all of this.
i wish build had been better. i’m not sure what exactly happened, in that 2nd half. rewrites, i guess? the command that it now had to be compliant with the setting of the next rider, and so whoops time to do a little reality smushing & for some reason throw out all the other plot points? demands to toss in even more fucking merch like it didn’t have enough collectibles and upgrades already, good lord, even kids can’t possibly keep up with toy schedules like this, can they, like by the time you convince your parents to buy you [x] it’s already goddamn obsolete in the show --
but it’s hard to deny that build affected me in a big way. i got tired of it, near the end. but i’m glad i watched it all the way through. and i’ll never forget the absolute euphoria i felt watching, like, ep 12 to ep 30 or so. that stretch was a highlight of this entire franchise for me. it was like i was watching something made specifically for me. it was beautiful.
beautiful just like the suits in this show. damn.
if only sawa had gotten one.

Well...
... That was fun.
Very brief immediate thought son Zi-O 5 below.
Seriously this is gonna be short my brain is exhausted it had a long day yesterday.
Also... This is out of order.
I think Sougo was confused bc Geiz and Tsukuyomi didn’t follow him to school again.
These three are so cute I love them already.
Like, Geiz could have just walked out the door, but he waited w/ Tsukuyomi for Sougo. He also handed Sougo the Build Watch back, and let him come to the past w/ him w/ only mild complaining. Like, Tsukuyomi being patient w/ Sougo isn’t new, but Gets is doing well, too.
Also don’t worry, Sougo, you three are definitely gonna be friends.
While it is sad that they couldn’t get Gentaro or Ryuusei back, it’s nice to see the photos. I guess they asked about Ryuusei bc he was wearing different uniform.
And honestly, I understand that they couldn’t get anyone else. What Toei probably does is just look at who they think they can afford and then do mass phone calls, then take whoever picked up the phone and said yes first. Also, given that Kengo’s actor is retired, I believe Yuuki’s actress has decided to never come back (also it looks like she’s been busy as well), JK’s actor just reprised the role, so he/his agency may have felt that it was too soon to do it again, and the other three KR Buu members don’t seem to have been active for the past few years (I have no details, this is just me looking up acting credits on like IMBD and Wikipedia), I guess they just ended up in a perfect storm of couldn’t get anyone and it was too late to change the production plan.
They did at least reference Gentaro, and I believe Ohsugi was explaining what he was doing--he was definitely saying Gentaro left the Ride Watch w/ them, bc he imitated the chest thump.
So, uh... I never watched Faiz. And I actually know next to nothing about it, esp in comparisons to other KR I haven’t watched, other than apparently everyone dies a lot and Kusaka is a dick. Given his behaviour here, I’m inclined to agree... I understand the logic, given what I think is happening here, but I think his execution needs some work.
My god, could it be? A secondary Rider I don’t immediately love? *pretend shock* It’s not that big a deal.
Top notch thoughts from me this ep: ‘Why is the camera man hiding in the bushes?’
Followed by: ‘Why is Takumi hiding in the bushes?’ Actually he has a better reason than the camera man.
I wonder if Takumi is gonna react to Tsukuyomi having the Faiz gun? Bc her blaster is a Faiz reference, right?
Well, next ep, I’m gonna be really confused, bc I never watched Faiz. Are Kusaka and Takumi calling each other friends? That’s not the impression I got from the second hand info I get about their series... Also, aren't they both dead? I thought everyone in that series died, like, five times... You know what, not gonna worry about it.
My hypothesis is that they’re not gonna try and pass off any pre-2010 Riders as their past selves for appearance reasons, unless they get someone who has made a deal w/ the devil and miraculously hasn't aged (Kouhei Takeda).
And the most important moral of this story is that Wizard is coming up and THEY GOT NITOH BACK I’M SO HAPPY I’M GONNA DIE!!!
Oh, yeah, and apparently Woz has powers of some kind (catching Another Fourze’s punch and blasting him), and I think I like the dynamics of the Time Jackers. I’d be interested if those three got some kind of growth/character development where they ended up caring about each other too, just like the heroes. I like the ‘bad guys who care about each other but are still bad guys’ thing.
Also... I just realised that on the surface, at least, they’re the ones creating Ouma Zi-O. Like, bc they’re creating the Another Riders, Sougo is seeking out the power to help the people hurt by them, which requires getting the power of the Kamen Rider in question, which is rn what seems to be leading to how he becomes Ouma Zi-O. So if it really is the cause (him stealing the Rider powers I mean), then this is a stable time loop, bc if the Time Jackers had done nothing, then nothing would have needed to be done.
Still excited for reluctant friendship, and to see who else Toei can get back.
Well. It was shorter. Still kinda long, though. Sorry.
