I only needed to edit a small portion of one page, so this probably wouldn't work if you were trying to black out text accross multiple pages of.

How to see blacked out text. Welcome to my latest summary of recent news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & ecommerce! This covers articles I came across since the December report, although some may be older than that. Since this was a busy time of year, I cut back a bit on the commentary. 
Now that I am mostly caught up, I hope to publish this report 2-4 times each month, with other more-detailed updates on specific issues as needed. (I’m expecting Etsy to roll out some new stuff soon, but I cold be wrong.) Let’s aim for 2 times a month to start 😀

TOP NEWS & ARTICLES 
If you find yourself making a lot of graphics and images for social media, website etc., but you aren’t a designer, check out this infographic explaining the simplest basics of good design. Yes, it is overly simplistic, but if you don’t really know much about this area, you probably should be familiar with these ideas. 
California’s new privacy law kicked in January 1 (although they won’t enforce it until July 1); here’s a good overview. “users will, as of today, be able to see what data companies have gathered about them, have that data deleted, and opt out of those companies selling it to third parties from now on.” They explain how this will work on their own site: “we track your behavior—what articles you read, for how long, etc.—on WIRED.com using cookies. We use that data internally for research and site improvements, but the information can also go to a third-party vendor, like Google AdSense, which combines it with similar data from other sites to create user profiles that advertisers can target. The infamous shoe ad that follows you across the internet long after you close out your Zappos tab? That’s how it works—and advertisers pay extra for the privilege of this personalized ad targeting. If you ask WIRED.com to stop “selling” your data, you won’t get those types of ads from us anymore, and your browsing history on our site won’t factor into the types of ads you see elsewhere.”
A lot of you have asked me for more info on how to use Google Analytics for Etsy shops. Until I get around to posting more details, here is a not bad set of instructions, including how to set it up to track Etsy search (site search). 
ETSY NEWS 
Interview with “staff product manager of search ranking and platform at Etsy”, Andrew Stanton. [podcast & transcript] This is very technical and not particularly revealing, IMO. I’m posting it because we do have a few people with a technical background reading here. (Plus, the transcript has typos - 16 million results is actually 60+ million, for example.) Also, around the 24 minute mark he admits they do “need to expose [new sellers] artificially higher in the rankings” for the long term success of the marketplace. 
In case you missed it being splashed all over your dashboard, Etsy’s early 2020 trend report is here. Take a quick browse through for the popular keywords & themes for each topic/holiday. Also of note:
“2019 Valentine’s Day shoppers planned to spend 42% of their budget on gifts for people other than romantic partners”
“Passover (Apr 8) and Easter (Apr 12) fall more than a week earlier than last year.”
They included a craft category this time, with tips on promoting specific supplies at specific times. “Fabrics & Notions are the most popular subcategory, followed by Jewelry-Making Supplies.”
They followed up with a specific Valentine article, here, with ideas for buyers. 
An interesting article covering Etsy’s beginning and first 5 years, including some early videos and interviews. And for those of you who didn’t know where the name came from: “The name "Etsy" comes from a phrase Kalin hears while watching the movie 8½. "I wanted a nonsense word because I wanted to build the brand from scratch. I was watching Fellini’s 8½ and writing down what I was hearing. In Italian, you say 'etsi' a lot. It means 'oh, yes.' And in Latin, it means 'and if,'" Kalin tells Reader's Digest in 2010.”
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES 
Google’s John Mueller answers [video] some of the most common SEO questions his department receives, including a few coding ones to start. 
Google rankings dropping doesn’t necessarily mean you got a penalty. Ranking well on Google isn’t just about the content - it’s about the whole website. What can you control in regards to Google ranking? On-page SEO: what it is, & the 10 most important factors. 
If you are confused about when to use H1, H2, H3 etc. on your website or blog, you will be happy to know that Google says they aren’t as crucial to ranking as many people think, and you should use them to organize your content logically. 
Hackers are now inserting links on blogs & websites to get backlinks to game Google. Many of the affected sites run the open source version of WordPress. “The award-winning Canadian urban magazine Spacing ... identified several articles where unauthorized links had been added long after publication. One post was even hacked during the course of the magazine’s email conversations with BuzzFeed News”
Medium seems to have lost a lot of Google search visibility in the past 1-2 months; no one is sure why. Here’s one theory [tl:dr - they suck at SEO; a few of the reasons are technical]. 
Here’s a good article on the current state of voice search, why it is developing more slowly than expected, and what you can do to optimize now and for the future. 
The most recent Google update rumour was Jan. 7; I’m not seeing much change at the moment. And just in case you missed anything, here are the top Google search updates and changes from 2019.
CONTENT MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)

Did you know there are ideal lengths (and sometimes character limits) for social media & blog posts? Here’s the research, but obviously if you don’t have more to say, don’t pad it just to fill space. If you think you need to run a bit longer than ideal, look carefully for places you can cut a few words. Some good tips on that here.
Mailchimp is still the leader in email tools, with over 60% of all people using email list services. They sent over 340 billion emails in 2019. [disclosure: I use them for my blog email list and customer email newsletters.]

Apps Within Apps: UX Lessons from WeChat Mini Programs
WeChat, the most popular social Mobile App Development company  application in China, had 1 billion monthly active users as of March 2018. A product update at the end of 2017 introduced a new significant function from the program: WeChat miniature programs (such as mini games). Mini apps are much like programs, but they're built within WeChat: they believe as though apps within a bigger app.

4. Design miniature apps with infrequent users in your mind.
Many of our research participants stated that they prefer mini programs for Services that they only use sometimes, to save space on their phone. By way of instance, a user explained,"If I just need to use the function once a month, I'd use the mini program. By way of instance, dry cleaning. I do not need to download an app for cleaning. To help you stay strategic in your content promotion efforts, here are five bonus content strategy ideas to consider before sending an email or posting a tweet. 46. Create a content promotion calendar. Content promotion should never be a guess, and you’ll want to be able to look back on your messaging to see what worked and what didn’t so you can adjust for future content launches. For example, you could use Facebook’s advertising platform or HubSpot’s lists tool to segment your audience for ads and emails, respectively. 48. Customize messaging for each channel. Building off the last point, what you write on email doesn’t always make sense for a Facebook post. Alternatively, your character counts on Twitter are 280, which is far lower than the limit on Instagram. You’ll want to customize the design, value prop, and copy utilized in each of your promotions. Not only does this ensure you avoid the risk of coming across as redundant across all channels, it also ensures your messaging is appropriate for each platform. 49. Experiment and optimize often. When it comes to content promotion, “better” should trump “best.” In other words, you can always find a way to promote content smarter and in new ways. Whenever you release a new piece of content, challenge yourself or your team to find a new channel to promote it. You should also keep a keen eye on which promotion tactics are not producing projected results so that you can consider resetting goals or abandoning that tactic altogether. 50. Analyze your results often. Use tracking links and analytics tools to keep your eye on what promotion ideas are generating views to your content, submissions, leads, and customers. While not the primary task of all content marketers, it can’t hurt to know the numerical and monetary impact your content has on the business. This step also holds true when analyzing specific promotion channels. Social media and digital marketing are constantly changing, with new platforms and algorithms developing all the time. Ultimately, it’s critical you keep an eye out for which methods work best for you and your business. Hopefully this list will get you started, but this should be an iterative process in which you regularly analyze and pivot as you see which platforms and content best serves your audiences’ needs.

Okay, I have had several questions today about this one.
The reality is Facebook, and therefore Instagram and WhatsApp are experiencing issues today.
But for those of you who are experiencing this later than this publication date, I thought I’d jot down a few ways for you to troubleshoot Facebook and it’s owned apps when things are going wonky.
By “wonky” I mean:
Photos aren’t displaying
You are seeing text instead of photos that says something like “No photo description available” or “image may contain: one or people sitting outside” or something like that (I’ll cover what that is later).
You can’t add a new post to Facebook or Instagram
You can’t edit or update an existing post on Facebook or Instagram
You are getting timeout errors in WhatsApp
Facebook Messenger tells you there is an unread message when there isn’t (click for this fix)
Facebook is acting…well…wonky.
If Facebook, WhatsApp, or Instagram are acting all wonky on you, here are some tips to troubleshoot the problem. Click To Tweet
For today, the issue is really one related to Facebook’s network and their ability to render photos. So, users are seeing a few photos but lots of boxes with text in them that look like this:
NOTE: In the case of this specific outage, it is interesting to see a glimpse of the Facebook meta that its algorithms are trying to apply to specific photos. In this case, we can see that the algorithms are trying to identify what is going on in the photo, whether the photo contains people, pets, etc…and the location of the photo. An interesting side-effect to the outage.
For those of you who are reading this in the future, maybe this is the same issue you are experiencing. In this case, it’s a Facebook issue and you just have to wait it out. 
If your issue isn’t the same, here are the steps I take to troubleshoot Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp issues.
Step 1 – Check To See If Facebook Is The Problem
Before you waste a bunch of time troubleshooting your browser and/or computer, check to see if the problem is actually just with Facebook. There are a number of ways I do this:
Check The Facebook Developer Site
You would think that Facebook would tell us if there is an issue, right?
Sometimes they do…sometimes they don’t. If you think about it, it’s not really in their best interest to tell everyone there is a problem. Users might start tweeting instead. Shareholders might start questioning whether they should own Facebook stock. The board might start questioning whether they have the right leadership in place.
Basically, I there eyes it’s not a good idea for Facebook to tell us when there are issues.
Sometimes, though, they do announce issues to the developers at https://developers.facebook.com/status/dashboard/. It’s pretty hit or miss, though.
For instance, earlier today there were no issues:
Facebook developer site was reporting no issues when clearly there were.
This afternoon, however, because they couldn’t fix the issue and cover it up quickly, there is an announcement:
Since they couldn’t fix it quickly without announcing it, they have opened a ticket with the Facebook issue.
Check DownDetector To See If Facebook, Instagram, Or WhatsApp Aren’t Working
A little more reliable way to see if a site is down is to check Down Detector. This site pays attention to the APIs and services of a lot of major sites, as well as monitoring popular channels like Twitter to see if users are reporting outages.
Down Detector is a good tool check to see if a major network is down
Personally, I find Down Detector to be a little more reliable and more expedient when it comes to reporting major issues. Here are some quick links to some of the Facebook-owned channels:

Check Twitter To See If Facebook Is Down
Yeah, I know is sounds weird to check Twitter to see if Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp aren’t working, but it works. Check out these hashtags and you’ll be able to tell whether these sites are misbehaving:

#WhatsAppDown

Twitter hashtags can tell you when Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp are down.
If there are no issues reported through those various services, it’s time to start looking more closely at your PC or Mac to see if there are other issues that might be causing problems.
Step 2 – Restart Your Browser
It’s possible that it’s not Facebook at all. When browser cache’s get full or too many windows/tabs are chewing up your CPUs, it’s possible that you just need to restart Chrome, Firefox, Safari…whatever browser you use.
If you restart your browser and the issue still persists, then it might not be your browser. To validate this, though, try opening Facebook in a different browser and see if the problems still exists.
If Facebook misbehaves in Chrome, but works in Firefox…then the issue might be a problem with a Chrome extension or Ad Blocker that you have installed.
If restarting the problem doesn’t fix it, move on to the next step.
Step 3 – Restart Your Browser In Safe Mode To Disable Any Extension or Ad-Blockers
OK, so the problem still persists in your browser of choice. The next step is to restart that browser in safe mode and see if it still is giving your the errors.
To restart your browser in safe mode, the steps are:
1) Close all open browser. All of them. Honestly, I would close every application and just focus on troubleshooting your browser issue.
2) For Chrome, just open Chrome and then click the “New Incognito Window” option from the menu in the upper-right corner.
To start Chrome in safe mode, just open a new Incognito window.
By starting a new Incognito window, Chrome will load the browser without any active plugins or extensions. Now, just browse to Facebook and see if the issue still exists.

3) For Firefox, the best way is to open Firefox and then choose “Restart with Add-ons Disabled…”. By doing this, Firefox will restart and none of your plugins or extensions will be enabled. Once restarted, browse to Facebook and see if there are still problems.
Starting Firefox in safe mode can help you troubleshoot issues.
4) Unfortunately, Safari doesn’t really have a “safe mode” like Chrome and Firefox do. Instead, reboot your Mac and hold the shift key while it boots. That will start your operating system in safe mode and will allow you to troubleshoot to see if Safari is the issue.
Once rebooted into safe mode, just open Safari and then browse to Facebook to check whether the issue still exists.
If the problem still exists despite restarting the browser in safe mode, the next step is just restarting your computer.
Step 4 – Restart Your Computer
I know, I know…it seems like such a simple task. However, I am guilty of leaving my PC on and using sleep mode for weeks at a time. After I’m done at work, I just put my laptop to sleep,  go home, and wake it up.
Then, when I leave for work I just put it to sleep again and go to work.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat….for weeks at a time.
Unfortunately, this isn’t really a good strategy for overall stability. So, if your computer is acting up just restart it.
Step 5 – Switch From WiFi To A Wired Connection Or Vice-Versa
It’s possible that the problem isn’t Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp at all. Maybe it’s your internal network or Internet Service Provider (ISP).
If your network ISP is having issues, it’s more likely that you’re going to see issues that span beyond just Facebook. Google searches might fail, Twitter might give you crazy errors. You might see browser errors that the site has timed-out.
If you are seeing issues like across multiple sites, it might be your network or ISP.
If you are using a wired connection using a network cable that connects your computer to a jack in the wall, you might try switching over to a WiFi network. If that resolves the issue, then you might need to check your adapter, connections, or router.
If you’re on WiFi, try switching to another WiFi network or connecting via a wired connection. If switching networks helps, then it’s possible your router might be the issue.
If you’re at home on a PC that doesn’t have a WiFi adapter, then you can always check to see if Facebook is experiencing issues using your mobile device. Just be sure you aren’t connected to WiFi.
Try testing Facebook over a 4G connection and if no issues are present, it’s likely your network or ISP are having issues.
Step 6 – Restart Your Router
If you followed the steps above and you think your network or ISP might be the issue, then first try restarting your router.
My XFi router is a fan-powered and a bit dusty. Not a good combination. Time to dust it off so it doesn’t overheat.
Just like your PC, it does need to be restarted occasionally. While you’re at it, dust it off and give it a good cleaning with a can of compressed air.
If you don’t keep your router clean, it can overheat and that will definitely degrade performance and cause issues.
Step 7 – Check With Your Service Provider To See If There Are Issues.
I know.
I hate calling my ISP too. Long wait periods, cruddy support, just a dissatisfying experience. Sometimes, though, it’s a necessary evil.
If you have determined that there are no reported issues and nothing seems to be wrong with your local network or WiFi connections, then you might just need to contact Comcast, Cox, Time Warner, or whoever your Internet Service Provider is.
Give them a call, open a chat, or tweet at them. Hopefully, they can help you out.
Step 8 – Wait It Out
If you have tried everything else, maybe just wait a while.
Go outside. Read a book. Talk to your family.
Do something non-internet related.
Who knows, it might fix itself in a few hours.

Wombwell Rainbow Interviews
I am honoured and privileged that the following writers local, national and international have agreed to be interviewed by me. I gave the writers two options: an emailed list of questions or a more fluid interview via messenger.
The usual ground is covered about motivation, daily routines and work ethic, but some surprises too. Some of these poets you may know, others may be new to you. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do.
Dah Helmer
Born April 7th 1950, in Herkimer, New York and raised in Ilion, New York, along the energizing Mohawk River, Dah has been a resident of Berkeley, California since 1980.Besides being a prolific writer, Dah is an award-winning photographer, and a yoga practitioner since 1969. He is a certified teacher in two yogic disciplines, Shivananda  and Yoga Of The Heart. From these two schools he developed his own style, Chakra Four Yoga, which he’s been teaching to children in public and private schools since 2005. Dah stopped teaching adults in 2013, only to focus on the magical realm of teaching kids to meditate, to stretch, and to stay in harmony with the natural world.
When Dah is not writing or teaching he stays close to nature and has a great passion for coastal camping along the Pacific shores and backcountry camping along lakes and rivers, as well as cycling, canoeing, and daily long walks in the redwood hills of Berkeley. He also spends many hours in his self-designed and self-built garden meditating or floating into a trance state of deep relaxation, dreams, and visions.
Much of Dah’s poetry exhibits indelible images of nature and,  at times, his poetry can be beautifully melancholic due to the gloomy emotionally and spiritually depleted realms  of humanity, politics, and religion.
Dah says: I don’t always want my readers to feel comfortable in that uncomfortable poetry can create realizations that enable an expansion of one’s imagination and experiences.

The Interview
WR: Dah, thank you for taking the time out of your schedule for this interview.
DAH: The pleasure is mine Paul, and thank you for inviting me.
WR:  So, what inspired you to write poetry?
DAH:  For me, Paul, it’s more of who than what. The inspiration comes from nearly all of the 20th Century European and Russian poets, along with the Dada and Surrealist writers, which also includes Rimbaud and Whitman. Then, in the 1960’s, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Jim Morrison’s poetry/lyrics came around and the complex word-play in their writing has had a powerful affect over my creativity. It was as if a spell had been cast.
WR: Who introduced you to poetry?
DAH: I began focusing on poetry in my early teens due to my ninth grade English teacher.She would begin class by reading poems from Neruda, Whitman, Poe, and others. Something in me clicked with their poetic language and especially with Neruda’s earthy simplicity and Whitman’s sweeping imagery.
WR: How aware were you of the dominating presence of older poets?
DAH: I believe that the awareness is always there, whether conscious of it or not.  It’s understood that, as a young poet, older poets have always had a stimulating affect over my thoughts as a creative thinker. It’s the creative achievements of these older poets along with their ability to string words together into stunning similes and metaphors that, as a fledgling writer, lured my imagination and my interest.
WR: What is your daily writing routine?
 DAH: I would like to say that I have a writing routine, but I don’t have one. I’ve never considered of a writing process. I write when I have something to say. I don’t force words onto paper, nor do I force myself to write. There are those who are convinced that if they don’t write so many words per day then they are failing as a writer, and I find this type of thinking stifling with a side of emotional torcher. I’m completely relaxed about writing and about being a writer. Also, I travel a bit, which creates natural stimulation for my imagination. I write in pencil in cheap composition notebooks which I carry with me all of the time. There’s nothing special in my working technique, no glorified writer’s sanctuary.
WR: What motivates you to write?
DAH: My subconscious tells me when I must write. I never consciously think about it. Many times while walking or driving I have dropped to the sidewalk or pulled my truck over to get a first-draft line or two out of my head and onto paper. Again, there is no specific process or rules for my writing. There’re no deliberate set ups, no special pen, or no particular writing space, or any writers retreats. The only time that I retreat to write is when I open my composition notebook, or when I open a blank WORD doc. Any time that I am writing I have retreated, that is, into my imagination.
Also, I’m a member of the poetry critique group, The Lounge, which is a place where a few of us writers watch out for one another by critique and editing each others work.  It’s an online group that I created in 2013. I keep The Lounge at ten members or less. It’s a comfortable, egoless space to be a writer.
WR: What is your work ethic?
DAH:. To be a good writer one must be an honest writer, a writer of integrity, even if you are making it up you have to be honest with yourself about why you are writing this or why you are saying this.
WR: When you were young, how have the writers you read influenced you?
DAH: In everyway possible, artists influence artists. Ones development as an artist and ones many transformations as a growing artist are connected, in one way or another, to what one reads or observes from other artists. There’s no denying the influence and/or inspiration by those before us. On many different levels we, knowingly or not, establish an emotional relationship with those who have influenced us.
WR: Who of today’s writers do you admire the most and why?
DAH: I read many literary journals and magazines and to be honest there’s not much from contemporary poets or fiction writers that excites me. Currently, there’s an overwhelming deluge of sentimental writers, those who persistently write about their families, or childhoods, or about the dying process of a mother or father, that doesn’t draw me in.
I am a hard reader to please. It’s rare for me to be astounded, or to be left speechless by today’s writers. I am not stating that these are inferior writers I am simply saying that what they’re writing about doesn’t appeal to me. On the other hand, being that W.S. Merwin is still alive, then, yes, I admire much of his earlier works. There’s something visionary in his thinking, something deeply creative in his wordplay, something essential and fresh in his creative language. There is also an up and coming fiction writer, Michael Grotsky, who may be releasing his first collection of short fiction at the end of this year. I’ve read many of his stories, and his imagination is of a higher-level accomplishment. His stories are bold with unique characters, places and dialog. Grotsky’s fiction never fails to take me on a spirited adventure to places that I have not been, or to show me something that I’ve not seen, or to tell me things that I have not heard.
WR: Why do you write, as opposed to doing something else?
DAH: I’m an artist, and creative writing is simply one of my many expressions. Fine art photography has been another of my expressions for about four decades. I also paint, draw, play guitar etc …
WR: What would you say to someone who is asking you: “How do you become a writer?”
DAH:  To become a writer, one must write. There’s no other way to be a writer.
WR: Tell me about the writing projects you have going on at the moment.
DAH: My seventh book of poetry, Something Else’s Thoughts, was released by Transcendent Zero Press in July 2018. My sixth book, The Opening, was released a few months earlier by CTU Publishing in March 2018. Currently, my eighth book, Full Life In The Day Of A Poet: selected poems, is in production with Cyberwit Press. The 100-plus poems in this collection are culled from my first four books. The release of “Full Life … “ should be March 2019. Also, I’m continually submitting my poems to journals and magazines, which amounts to about fifty to seventy of my poems published each year. Over the past few years I have had hundreds of poems published in scores of literary zines, in both academic and non-academic periodicals. In addition to all of these writing projects, I’m sorting through my literally thousands of photographs for my first photographic book. If I stay focused I may even see it to a finished piece of work with about fifty-to-hundred images.
WR: Dah, thank you for this insight into your world as an artist.

10 Useful Tips for Education Social Media
Social media marketing is an absolute must to establish your education brand’s authority and authenticity. Here are some helpful tips to ramp up your higher education social media strategy.
Being successful at higher education social media requires more thought and planning than most people think. Just because a college, university, or independent school is an institution with young people, that doesn’t mean it will naturally be  effective at social media marketing.
And even if you’re an avid user of social media or have managed social media marketing for another organization, social media for higher education is a huge challenge.
But with these helpful tips, you can tame the beast and make it work for your college or university!
1. Create social media guidelines.
With social media, there are a lot of things happening you won’t have control over. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do something to protect your education brand.
Publish a set of rules or guidelines on your website for anyone in your organization who wants to start a social media account representing your brand.
This way, you can direct all the managers or creators of the various social media accounts related to alumni, sports, or department interests to follow the brand guidelines.
Most social media accounts are happy to follow the rules, but if a social media account violates the guidelines consistently, you can petition the social media platform to have those accounts shut down.
I’d keep this as a very last resort, but you need to keep your brand voice and authority consistent, even if it means shutting down rogue accounts.
2. Organize your content distribution.
By nature, higher education social media is complex. But you can manage the chaos with a little organization.
Create distribution workflows spelling out who is responsible for publishing content on which social media channels and how they’re to receive the content on time.
For example, if you have students or staff writing content, they need to know who will edit the content, how documents are to be shared and stored (e.g., Google Drive, Trello, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.), and how to notify the social media managers when content is ready to be posted.
Some tools I recommend to help organize your social media workflow:
CoSchedule
Google Sheet or other spreadsheet with tasks and responsibilities listed
Project management software like Teamwork, Asana, or Trello.
Hootsuite
Buffer
3. Make it easy for people to give you content.

I’d keep this as a very last resort, but you need to keep your brand voice and authority consistent, even if it means shutting down rogue accounts.
2. Organize your content distribution.
By nature, higher education social media is complex. But you can manage the chaos with a little organization.
Create distribution workflows spelling out who is responsible for publishing content on which social media channels and how they’re to receive the content on time.
For example, if you have students or staff writing content, they need to know who will edit the content, how documents are to be shared and stored (e.g., Google Drive, Trello, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.), and how to notify the social media managers when content is ready to be posted.

3. Make it easy for people to give you content.
You will always be in need of fresh content for your social media feeds. To keep you from running out of great story ideas, create ways for students, faculty, alumni, parents, and donors to send their stories or ideas to you.
You can crowdsource ideas and content curation by embedding a form on your website asking for stories.
Traffic and incentive are key to the success of your form.
Drive traffic to your form via email, print marketing, and social media posts.
Use gated content to entice visitors to tell their stories.
Consider running a contest or game where if enough people give you their stories, you’ll do something crazy like dunk your president in cold water or have your him/her kiss a pig.
4. Start social media groups.
One place that Facebook’s ever-changing algorithm does not touch is Facebook groups.
That means whatever you post there will get published to all the members of the group.
For this reason alone, you should think seriously about starting social media groups.
Another reason is  you can create a highly loyal and engaged tribe of people centered around a specific issue, department, or activity.
Don’t forget to use hashtags to engage in Twitter chats. LinkedIn groups can be a very effective way for you to keep your education brand in front of alumni or potential adult students.
5. Mobilize your campus to do good.
Social media groups can be the start of mobilizing your campus for good.
You can create social media groups that encourage students to volunteer for various causes on your campus or in your local area. These groups are great for organizing the when, where, and what of these charitable activities.
If you’re in a disaster-prone area, think of how you can use your higher education social media strategy to create an information channel for students, faculty, and parents to use during natural disasters.
Is my loved one safe?
What do I do to stay safe?
Where can I go to get help?
What’s the status of the hurricane, tornado, earthquake, etc.?
These are all questions people will likely have when they come to your social media accounts. Be prepared.
Follow this principle with regards to scandals and big changes as well. Have a PR plan in place as to how your social media channels will handle such crises.
6. Keep an eye on where your audience hangs out.
In higher education social media, certain demographics use particular social media platforms to communicate.
But don’t rely on rules of thumb alone. Your audiences will have their own unique preferences.
For better results, get to know your audiences and cater to their preferences.
Keep track of your social media analytics so you know where your audience hangs out and what they like to do on those channels. For example, many times you’ll find that students use Facebook for family communications and SnapChat when they’re talking with their friends.

Specifically, Facebook, SnapChat, and Instagram users enjoy the stories feature.

Facebook Stories are short user-generated photo and video collections that can be viewed up to two times and disappear after 24 hours.
The story format, originated and made famous by Snapchat, has been on Facebook’s radar for some time, with the Menlo Park-based company first testing a Snapchat Stories clone within Messenger in September 2016.
You can use stories in many different ways:
Share campus news
Talk about local attractions
Announce important research achievements
Share changes in departments

Being successful at higher education social media requires more thought and planning than most people think. Just because a college, university, or independent school is an institution with young people, that doesn’t mean it will naturally be  effective at social media marketing.
And even if you’re an avid user of social media or have managed social media marketing for another organization, social media for higher education is a huge challenge.
But with these helpful tips, you can tame the beast and make it work for your college or university!
1. Create social media guidelines.
