Animal Crossing Tips & Tricks! (Part 4)

Part 4: Resident Services Gets Sexy, Kicking Out Villagers, and The Able Sisters

Resident Services Upgrade:

Once your 5th villager moves in, Tom Nook will let you know that the tent is closing down. For the entire next day you will be unable to access the ATM and the plaza will feature construction scaffolding.

The day AFTER that though, you’ll finally reach the end of what I call the “Tutorial Phase” of the game.

You’ll have a large brick plaza, and morning announcements will now be the domain of the perky and fun-loving poodle Isabelle!

You also get a host of new things you can do!

Tom Nook:

Tom handles all things housing.

For 5,000 bells, you can customize your home. There are multiple house expansions you buy from Tom Nook as you pay off the previous loan. Each expansion adds something you can customize or adds onto the existing catalogue of options. Mailboxes, doors, roof, and siding are customizable at different stages of expansion.

For 10,000 bells, he will give you a plot marker so you can invite new villagers to your island. They will move in with their SPECIAL CUSTOM HOME, no more defaults.

For 50,000 bells, you can move any villagers home, Nooks Cranny, or the Museum. The next morning they will appear where you place the marker.

For 50,000 bells you can move YOUR home anywhere you want. It’s alright if your current loan isn’t paid off, you can move it all the same.

You can also order the construction of one incline or bridge at a time. You choose from a small catalogue of styles (they will NOT match most of the permanent paths you can later build, just FYI), and place the bridge or incline marker kit where you’d like it to go.

A small orange creature appears with the scaffolding. The bridge or incline will be built the DAY AFTER you pay off the entire project.

You can go to Tom Nook to erase a bridge or incline- EVEN IF IT HASN’T BEEN BUILT YET.

Isabelle

Isabelle handles all things non-construction.

You can now submit one of the designs in your Designer App to replace the current flag (look online for patterns to recreate or wait until you unlock the clothing store and can download other user-created patterns).

You can create a custom tune for the town song. This is the little whistle pattern you hear every time you enter a building or initiate a conversation.

Isabelle also mediates disputes you have with other villagers. What this means is if you talk to her about a villager and say you’re having problems, she will say she will “speak with them”.

All this does is re-sets their personality marker. Nothing more.

Isabelle CANNOT help you get rid of villagers (more on that later).

Island Rating

Tom Nook informs you that he needs to speak with you about the next phase of the plan! He wants you to make the island nicer.

Once your island reaches a 3-star rating (Talk to Isabelle for your current rating and hints on how to improve it), musician KK Slider will visit. Consider this somewhat “Winning the game”. But not really.

Your island rating will probably be around 1-2 stars at this point.

Raise the rating by building fences, planting multiple species of fruit and flower, placing objects around your island (such as making little cafe areas), picking up weeds, not leaving dropped items (such as crafting materials or items in the little leaf icon form), crafting DIY recipes and placing them around the island, and building bridges and inclines.

You also need at least 7 villagers to reach 3 stars.

Up to now vacant plots have been “if you build it, he will come”, meaning they are sold by the next morning.

Now, however, your island rating matters. Plots might sit vacant for multiple days if your island rating is low.

The Campsite for Passive Aggressive Magicians

At this point, Tom Nook will give you a kit to build a campsite.

Once it is built, Isabelle will tell you in the daily announcement if there is a visitor at the campsite.

You can chat with visitors to the campsite and hopefully convince them to move to your island.

They will reject staying, then give you a challenge. You have to guess either the color of a playing card or the suite (heart, diamond, spade, club).

They’ll also give you this challenge in exchange for clothes or other items.

If they reject moving to your island, just keep asking them. They’ll say they admire how you don’t listen to them or respect their opinion, then give you another attempt to guess the card right.

If you don’t have a plot of land available, just go set one up and they’ll offer to check with Tom again.

The first campsite visitor is special though. Your first villager is one you *have* to invite to live on the island.

They will move in with their special custom house design.

If you’re lucky it’s a cool villager and not a douche (fucking Julian).

Villagers (and how to get rid of the old ones)!

The rule from before holds- if you have an available plot of land (no matter your star rating), you will find random villagers on Mystery Islands. If you have enough miles to buy a bunch of Nook Miles Tickets (or *cough* buy a pack of nook miles on Amazon), you can be picky and shop around as much as you’d like.

Getting rid of the old ones is a game of luck.

Each day you talk to a villager they get a point, giving them gifts that align with their style or favorite colors also gives points (you can find online guides to help you in this or download the ACNH.Guide phone app).

NOT talking to a villager removes a point.

Ignore a villager- sometimes it takes a couple weeks- until you see them pacing the island deep in thought with a little thought bubble above their head.

Talk to them and they will say they were thinking about exploring other islands. Encourage them to leave.

The next day Isabelle will announce they are leaving. Their house will be “in boxes”, so everything in moving boxes.

There is an opportunity at this point:: If someone else wants that villager, they can visit your island and chat with them while their house is in boxes. They will be able to invite the villager to move to THEIR island instead.

Likewise, if you have a free plot you can visit a villager on a friend’s island who is “in boxes” and invite them to live with you.

There are online forums devoted to letting people grab in-boxes villagers from one another.

The day after a villager is in-boxes their house will return to the scaffolding form and you can hunt down new villagers on Mystery Islands.

The Able Sisters

Each day you will have a different visitor to the island, and some of them will appear in your plaza.

The most important visitor at this point in the game is Mable- a blue hedgehog.

Every time you see her, buy as much of her wares as you can afford, even if you don’t like it.

Once you’ve bought 5,000 bells worth of items, she’ll say she and her sister were thinking of moving to the island and setting up a shop.

She will give you the building kit for the Able Sisters shop.

When the shop opens, every single day there will be new clothing items available. Don’t rely on the mannequins and displays in the shop- go into the fitting room to try on things in many different colors!

At the back of the shop is a kiosk. Players who design their own clothes upload them to the Nintendo servers. Using the kiosk and typing in those codes (or now there is a keyword search) will give you outfits that others have designed! Save the outfits to your DesignPro phone app (on your in-game phone).

Open your phone app (in game phone) to select the outfit to wear!

At the back of the store is Sable- a red hedgehog.

She is unfriendly when you first visit.

Talk to her every single day and she will slowly- over a week or two- become friendlier.

Once Able is fully unlocked as a friend, she will give you patterns to customize the fabrics of your DIY projects.

Visit her daily still to get more patterns at random.

Ace Attorney: Rise From the Ashes (Day Two, Investigation Former) (part 4)

(There’s so much to speculate on at this point in the game that I ended up just plain narrating all the events in detail. It was fun to write - but is it fun to read? Or do people prefer the less wordy format?) Today on Ace Attorney, we have our mission clear in mind: bring down Stinkyhead Gant the police chief, thereby saving both Lana Skye's life and Miles Edgeworth's career. And oh yeah we should probably figure out who killed Detective Goodman.

Twice.

Simultaneously in two different places. Could be twins, but my money's on the second victim being someone else dressed up in a white trenchcoat and fedora, and Gant was playing elaborate word games at the trial to technically not lie about it. No idea why.

A quick review establishes that the two crime scenes are 30 minutes apart by car, and then we're off to the parking garage to do Science(tm), I guess?

Ema announces that no body was found in the evidence room murder. Huh. That certainly wasn't mentioned at the trial! How, exactly, do you ID a nonexistent body? In particular, why would you think it was someone who was provably elsewhere and also dead?

Also Ema: Murder, sure, but my sister would NEVER erase evidence, that's unthinkable!

She's all excited about spraying for blood traces. And she has a point that we can't trust the police. Pink glasses on, new game mechanic engaged, and... we find some splotches right next to the car trunk. Not enough for a fatal knife fight, though. Lana's shoe has more blood on it than the ground.

Hello, lunchlady. You're much more friendly today. Though your bentos are no more appetizing than usual.

Angel Starr: Yes, I totally lied about these key facts to make my enemy seem more guilty. But you haven't caught me in any lies about these OTHER things, and that's what's important!

Instead of pointing out that we have no reason to trust ANY of her testimony, Phoenix muses that the photo she took must have a Clue in it. Hm. Re-examining it, I see:

Lana still has both shoes on and they do not match the shoe submitted as evidence. Clue or low production values?

Lots of blood on her trenchcoat, no scarf, gloves, she's about to shut the trunk. But she didn't, since the crime scene outline tape shows the body was hanging out of it when found.

I dunno, man. The Clue eludes me. We ask Angel about her past as a detective instead. I get the distinct sense she is bragging about having tortured suspects.

Ema rises ten points in my estimation for a perfect delivery of the obvious food-poisoning insult. Angel barely notices, though; she's too busy being bitter about the case that got her fired. The SL-9 incident - same name as the tag on the knife, no surprise there.

Our victim Goodman was the lead detective on the case, she says. The knife was the murder weapon (duh), and in her eyes the case isn't over. (Goodman probably thought the same. Does Lana?) But it seems that's all she wants to say. We give up and head to the police department. There's another crime scene that could use a dose of Science.

The moving doll is still out front. Inside, the head detective won't talk about the situation, but will brag about his plush version of the doll. The other detective at his desk is working on his Agatha Christie fanfic. I'm not exactly sensing grim determination to avenge a fallen colleague, here.

We reach the security guard office. Cheesy cowboy decor, eleven booze bottles plus a full glass right on the front desk, and a line set up for hanging laundry. Somebody sleeps under his desk and has no fucks left to give. A lasso "trap" in front of the inner door looks like something set by Wile E. Coyote on an off day.

Ema's imagination is good enough to compare her sister to a cactus - but not good enough to think of using the ID card in our inventory to get into the evidence room. Or looking up stuff on the conveniently unguarded security computer. Instead we stand around waiting for Marshall until I give up.

Detention center: Lana is being interrogated. Will she be charged with both deaths, common sense not being an obstacle around here? But no, Phoenix remembers that Gant said they'd caught a suspect for the second murder. I really hope it's not Gumshoe.

The Prosecutor's office doesn't seem to be available right now. With no other options, we head back to the lunchlady and try again. I throw everything in my inventory at her this time. To my surprise, she has some solid observations to make:

- If Angel hadn't witnessed the crime, Edgeworth would've been the obvious first suspect. ...Was that the plan? I assumed before that she was planted at the scene as a witness, but now I'm not so sure.

- She's backed off from her blind rage against Lana enough to admit that it's very odd for such an organized person not to have brought her own murder weapon.

- She could've taken her photo from the overlooking guard room, instead of spending five minutes running all around the edge of the parking garage and climbing a high chain link fence. Her testimony looks fishy because of that.

Ema points out that lying on the stand is fishier. Angel retorts that her testimony was "disregarded" before in THAT case, and she was determined not to let it happen again. Do tell, lunchlady. Vent your bitterness at us.

And she does. (Flashback image: Angel, Goodman, and Marshall bent over a map, with a fourth person mostly hidden by the speech bubble.) The prosecutors, she says, were desperate for decisive evidence of guilt. They did not find it...so they used fake evidence to convict and execute the suspect. And then fired or demoted all the detectives involved.

Oof. So, falsified evidence *isn't* common practice here, depite the rumors about Edgeworth. It's so rare and so unacceptable that this level of coverup was needed to prevent major scandal. Angel has reason for her hatred of prosecutors - but who exactly was responsible? Edgeworth was new on the job at the time. It would have been Lana, pressured by Gant. And that's why Lana has been a cactus ever since.

I still don't like Angel, but she's smart enough to recognize Phoenix will serve her ends. She gives us an actually tasty-looking lunch! I thought it was a present in recognition of allyship, but no, it's a bribe. Presumably the smell of steak will lure someone back to his assigned guard post.

Ema blurts out her concern for Marshall, who apparently was a lot nicer before SL-9 and did not use to refer to her as a baby cow. Angel assures us Marshall is not one of her many boyfriends. I'm not sure why this makes Ema feel better, but it does.

Back to the PD we go with steak in hand.

Gumshoe is not arrested! He'd tell us who is, but we only have one piece of protein in the inventory and there's no need to trade it for the name. I can easily imagine who would be "having a good cry" in detention...but I can't imagine him doing murder. Even the judge wouldn't buy a whopper like that.

Waving the steak around at the security guard office fails to summon Marshall, so we head back *again* to lend the Sniveling Mailman a handkerchief. (Phoenix is racking up a lot of taxi or subway expenses, here. And he won't have the heart to bill Ema if Lana is convicted.)

S.M. Meekins, left hand thoroughly bandaged, can't imagine himself doing murder either. He is very confused and very loud. I am confused too, about why the guards haven't taken his portable loudspeaker away. But his garbled tale of woe clears things up for me if not for our heroes.

Meekins saw a "suspicious person" in a white trenchcoat and fedora on the monitors in the guard office, went into the evidence room and asked him for his ID. The guy pointed a knife at him and Meekins freaked out and tried to attack. Then he fainted and awoke alone with a bleeding hand. Soo...There's no body because nobody died. Gant is just *claiming* there was a murder because

well um because

Why would he claim that??? It's easily disproven. The security videos would normally show what happened clearly so they must've been deleted, or the cameras weren't working. And Marshall was not at his post.

Ema, bless her heart, connects the lack of dots and points out there was no murder - so why is Meekins in jail? Apparently there IS a security tape, I was wrong, and it shows the crime...and that it really was Goodman in the evidence room.

Twins? Lies? But which parts are lies? I throw some inventory items at Meekins just in case, and he recognizes the knife. The broken-tip knife with the SL-9 tag that was found in Edgeworth's car muffler, wrapped in Lana's scarf. Meekins is incoherent so Phoenix writes it off - but I don't.

Twin Goodmans AND identical knives is too much even for this series. And that means the real lie is about the time. Goodman was not in the evidence room and the parking garage simultaneously. He was in the evidence room first, perhaps? Getting the knife? But the security video must have timestamps...

I really want to see this security tape now. So we take our meat back to the police department, only to find Gant bullying the chief on duty. You. YOU ARE EVIL AND CONFUSING. I'm going to leave a 1-star review on ratemyvillain if you don't organize your nefarious plot better.

Gant is demanding that everything of Goodman's be found/removed, down to the trash in his wastepaper basket. (But he's happy to stop and chat with us and slander Edgeworth some more, with a bonus suggestion that Phoenix too is corrupt for having "proved" his innocence last game.)

The duty chief must not like being bullied, because he shows us something he kept back: a lost item report Goodman half-filled-out on the day of his death. It doesn't say what was lost. His ID, perhaps?

Surprisingly (suspiciously), Gant is willing to let us investigate the evidence room. He even gives us a guest ID card. And Marshall finally deigns to show up to work, though with the clear intention of not actually doing any.

Meat: deployed Marshall: impressed Me: ...those two ARE dating, and moreover communicating in a secret code of boxed lunches. It suits them.

"Steak filet lunch" apparently signals "render all assistance". Marshall willingly admits he's a grade-A slacker and doesn't even bother to understand the security system. (That explains the lasso.) He still doesn't want to tell us what the SL-9 case was about, but reminds us it was officially closed two days ago on evidence transfer day.

(That's the key to everything that happened on the day of the murder, isn't it? Goodman took the knife (and maybe more?) from the evidence room to keep it from being permanently "archived". He was killed for it - but someone protected it by hiding it in the car muffler, and now it's in the court record. That knife must be the key to solving SL-9. ...And that's why Gant showed up at the courtroom! He must be *so pissed* that this deadly piece of evidence is back in the public eye, it's a real danger to him. Okay! Now I have the shape of what we're dealing with.)

Marshall hasn't bothered to look at the security tape, but from what Meekins told us, other officers have. (Wait. Is that a safe assumption? Since all that matters is Gant's official talking points. they could simply be claiming the tape shows Meekins stabbed Goodman. I'd say this was implausible but I live in the US in 2020. )

Ooh, this looks useful - a list of every use of the card reader on the day in question. 4 different IDs are recorded. 2 of them must belong to Goodman and Meekins. One is nothing but sevens, that's certainly not ominous.

Fic: Endeavours Too Short Of Desires

4500 words | Teen | moody atmospheric vignettes from season 6 and a hike in the woods that never was

A/N: This isn’t new. I just wanted a tumblr copy. It is, as ever, for @dilkirani

"Nothing ever happens," Mulder wakes himself saying, jerking back from the depths of sleep.

Scully's face is a stern half-moon in the driver's seat.

"Hmm?" she says, eyes on the road.

"Dreaming," he says rather pathetically, hauling one shoulder up.

"About your love life?"

"Hah," he says. She smirks to herself. Every now and then he remembers she is someone's little sister.

A semi oozes past, its bulk as eerie as the lanternfish Mulder saw in a photo, the small lights set to tantalize with false promises of goodness within. The rental car hurls them through the night, back to the hotel, after the long day of pounding on the doors of innocent farmers. The air conditioner has the same hushed burble as his aquarium filter. The night is clear enough to swim in. If he rolled down the window, the dark would spill in and flood the car. He spins out a story in his half-awake mind: he and Scully, in their rented (though stolen would have more glamour) subaquatic transport are speeding towards the last outpost of civilization to confront the crooked Merpolice. He finds he is holding his breath and abandons the narrative. More apt to be pioneers. The thought of Scully's face hidden behind a ruffled bonnet is too entertaining to pass up.

"Think the Homestead Act is still in effect?" he asked.

Her mouth crimped. "This isn't a Conestoga, Mulder, and you're not a country boy. You'd starve without a deli."

"You hunt, I gather. What do you say, partner?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"After seven years, you expect me to be suddenly amenable to your lunatic schemes?" She makes a smooth stop at a deserted crossroads and sets the car in motion again.

"But you were so good with those pigs," he wheedles.

"Only you would want to settle down by actually settling," she says, putting the turn signal on though there isn't another car on the road. She pulls into the parking lot and noses the car into a slot, equidistant from the cars on either side. He hovers as she unlocks her door and slips in.

"Night, Mulder," she says, tipping her head against the frame.

"Night," he says as she pushes the door to and slides home the bolts. He lays awake in his mirror room, arm cocked over his head so that the back of his hand rests against the wall, trying to feel her heartbeat through the dark.

II.

What the hell are they doing?

There was a time his days had purpose, but now he finds himself floundering. A day's work? A life's work? A fine romance, a deadly drama, a comedy of errors? Scully is no waifish Ophelia, but there are days he fears they'll all end up dead due to the miching mallechos set off by his own determination. At least piles of manure aren't as likely to kill them as most of his demons.

He remembers when he met her, the cool firmness of her handshake and the bad cut of her suit. She is leaner now. Honed is the word he would use: it suits the way they scrape against each other. She has the clean compact lines of his Sig and he reaches for her the same way in a crisis. She isn't pretty. The word isn't in her vocabulary, with all the frou-frou softness it implies. If he can say she is beautiful, it is the beauty of the scalpel's edge. He feels softer by the day, his hand always half-extended to her. There are weekends he orders two coffees just because he forgets she isn't there. He drinks the second and buzzes for hours, having learned to tolerate cream in his coffee rather than face the shades his brain creates.

He dreams about picket fences and Scully with a fond palm cupped over the head of a blond boy. He wakes in a sweat. She deserves more. Not just someone who calls to say, "Hey, I found a musty old file, want to get takeout and give up your weekend?" She merits someone who calls to say instead "I was thinking of you" and leaves it at that. She deserves to be the sign and the signifier. He still loves the hunt, too, with a modern man's shame over the thrill of the chase. Dress it in a suit, give it a pistol, and call the hunt a puzzle or a profile or a case, but she's right: he gets off on it. She rides with him, but it doesn't take her to the same place. Bad motels, bad food, his everloving need to track the villain to his last hideout. Or maybe she does feel the call of it these days: he's guilty about that too. What has he made of her, this serious woman whose family hardly recognizes her? The two of them in coordinating blacks, him stooping along in the shadows with her ramrod-straight and stern beside him.

Who would she be if she weren't his Scully? How many hours of laughter has he stolen from her? How many years of ease? He feels the weight of his debts as an ache when he runs, a tug between his shoulders when he drives.

III.

So she isn't pretty (too severe, too pale of skin and sharp of chin) and she rubs him, god, the wrong way entirely with her pointed insistence on the rational. There are days lately that they just prickle at each other until the air is so charged he isn't sure one of them won't take a swing. He gets smug and she gets arch and he wants to remind her of Scully-that-was with the bad suits and the naivete, but the quips dry up when he looks at Scully-that-is, who might just shoot him to shut him up, her eyebrow cocking almost audibly as a pistol. It was easier when they were upstairs, Moose and Squirrel against the Badinovs. Now they've won and they're back in their weird seclusion, and he spends all day trying not to think about things. Diana and Spender and the enormous scar on Scully's stomach and a normal life and that's just for starters. Scully nags at him: he should be thinking of his knees, his cholesterol, his prostate, his geriatric future chasing phantoms, and he almost blushes under her cool stare as she dissects him and gets irritable about that.

"You want to be the one saying I told you so for once?" he snaps. "I'm sure when I'm dead you'll find a reason." She doesn't rise to the bait, just purses her lips and turns away, and he spends a couple of hours coming up with a good retort for her to have said. "Sooner rather than later" or "I've already seen you naked, I understand the situation" or a reminder of how it's her logic that turns him into something the world doesn't shun. But none of them measures up to her eloquent silence and the fact that she's still here (god, the miracle and the thorn in his side) and it makes him crankier and crankier until he has to go to the vending machine and buy a candy bar to drop on her desk. She raises an eyebrow and splits it with him, both of them with sticky fingertips and dense mouthfuls of nougat and peanut. She swallows with an effort, taps her lower lip with one finger. He licks exaggeratedly at his mouth and tastes caramel. She nearly smiles.

There are some days they're so in sync it's as if they're sharing a skin. He never thinks of it until later, when he turns and she's not there. But they haven't either of them been there, lately. In the bullpen, he can't even stare surreptitiously sideways at her profile.

They talk on the phone in the evenings, too accustomed for self-consciousness. He doesn't remember how many times he's heard her fall asleep, even in the middle of some hushed dispute. He thinks of her, limbs askirl in the comforter, wearing those shapeless pajamas. He wants to ease her out of them, put her in his oldest, softest t-shirt, watch her curl around him as she dreams. Hell, he'll let her drool on his chest if that's what it takes to see her unlimber that prickly standalone self-assurance. She must have been a girl once, laughing with those blue eyes, listening to rough-voiced men croon about how they needed her to need them. He likes to think that he could stop running long enough to spend the morning reading snippets of news stories to her.

IV.

He stares at the phone on the table. It lies there, implacable. He sighs, picks it up, and hits the button.

"Scully."

"Scully, it's me."

"Mulder," she says with a touch of reproval, "it's Friday night."

"It only feels that way because it gets dark early," he says, glancing at the dusky mirror of his window.

"Mulder," she sighs.

"Yeah," he says, and almost hangs up.

"And?" she prompts.

"There's a haunted wood in West Virginia that's very scenic this time of year," he says.

"Haunted?"

"The hotel has a hot tub," he says. "And the hike up to the site is gorgeous."

There is a long moment of silence. He hums The Eagles under his breath.

"Pick me up in half an hour," she says and hangs up.

They spin out the long miles between haunted places together in a silence he likes to call comfortable. He has been a connoisseur of silences since Samantha disappeared: his mother's, Phoebe's, Diana's. Scully's are sometimes cool or pointed but never cruel. The evening dims into early night. He wants to hear stories of her childhood, wants to relate the play-by-play of sandlot games from the days when Samantha was there, pigtails bouncing against her shoulders as she scrambled for a foul ball and held up the game. Instead he tunes the radio to NPR and feels Scully slouch next to him, relaxing into a concert of Bach's sonatas. She props one stocking-sheathed foot on the glove box.

"You like Bach, Mulder?"

"I live for Bach," he says easily. She flashes him a look and he quirks his mouth in a doesn't-matter smile. Those are times he doesn't like to think about, when they were separated, when he abandoned her without looking back and she came anyway to save him from his follies. Dana Scully, Our Lady of Second Chances. He'd lay flowers at her feet, but she doesn't suffer reverence well, the deflection of affection almost automatic between them. Not all wisdom has benefits, he thinks: too wise to woo, they are stuck in the stasis of longing and denial.

The stairs to the basement still smell like smoke when he goes to salvage his files, and his car still smells like Diana's perfume, however he tries to air it out. Betrayal has an acrid bite in his nose. Scully's hands are ashy as they sort through burned fragments of manila; he is aware that he does not deserve her.

West Virginia will not solve any of this, but he is longing for the old earnest purity of the supernatural after the months and months of bureaucracy. After the indignity of being dragged out of their basement. After the wedge Diana has put between them, after his new disillusionment, after his near-drowning. A nice trip to the woods, one that won't end in some ancient hollow filled with bones or the two of them dehydrated beyond recognition. It is tending toward autumn in the mountains, and he has hope again.

She's seen him naked before with those doctor eyes, one self-inflicted health concern after another. He frets that when the day of glory comes she won't see him as anything but a collection of troubles bundled in a too-familiar skin. Where's the mystery of undressing each other when they know all the scars? Where's the room for shadows and secrets and discovery?

All these dreams of yielding, but in the light, they brace their feet and bicker, an endlessly rehearsed debate.

They get in too late for the woods, just collapse in their separate rustic rooms. She yawns through breakfast, but he plies her with coffee and drags her up the mountain.

"What am I looking for?" she asks, her feet clompy in her boots. She has brought a pack with food and water and a good pocketknife. He has a compass in his pocket and a pamphlet in his bag about the local hauntings.

"Any sign of haints, spectres, manifestations, you know."

"Projectile vomiting?" she asks wryly, and pushes up the sleeves of her fleecy pullover.

"Breakfast wasn't that bad, Scully. Now get ghost huntin'."

"Mulder, is this an apology?"

He stretches his legs and outpaces her, scrambling up outcroppings just because he can. The ghostly copse is bright and sunny, the leaves just edged with crimson and yellow.

"Look at that, Scully," he says, putting out his arms and spinning. "Have you ever seen a place more positively haunted?"

She laughs, unpredictably. They eat apples and spit out the seeds. She chose the apples from a bowl in the dining room; he doesn't recognize the names of the varieties when she says them. He thinks, briefly, that he should give it all up and they could grow apples instead. In the evening they sit by a fireplace and the owner of the inn tells them all the ghost stories. Mulder takes notes. Scully stares dreamily into the flames. They slip into the hot tub under the stars, Scully in a very functional one piece, her towel close at hand against the chill in the air. They seem to be the only guests at the lodge. He swats at a lonely mosquito. Scully peers up at the sky.

"You know," Mulder nudges her toes in the water, "if we went up there now, maybe we'd catch Old Smoky in the act of spooking deer."

She regards him, her eyes half-lidded through the steam. "Mulder, was there even a ghost here?"

"There's always a ghost," he says.

On Monday, they don't talk about it.

VI.

Sometimes he sees himself as she must see him, on bad days. Hulking, crowding Mulder, deranged Mulder, screeching inanity even the Gunmen would discount out of hand. Broody, sulky, disturbed Mulder, who hasn't had a date or even a bedroom in years, who has more than once held a gun on her. Same old same old, dragging her across the nation's pale and seedy underbelly for the sake of an anonymous newspaper clipping or a breathless phonecall.

"Why do you trust these whackos?" she asks once, point blank Scully bluntness. "Mulder, are you just aching to have faith in someone?"

He bristles, ignoring the opportunity to be sweet. "They're not whackos. They're truthseekers."

"They're attention seekers." She is already turning away.

"Please don't undervalue my work," he says stiffly, stirred into adolescent sudden outrage so that his elbows jab at the fabric of his suit and his ears feel too large, awkward, hearing sly whispers. "However little you may respect these people and their struggles to confront the paranormal aspects, things that people like you say shouldn't exist, they deserve at least the justice of being listened to. This is my life, Scully. I'm not apologizing."

Her shoulders tilt. "It's become my life."

He punches the buttons on the radio until he finds a classic rock station and taps the steering wheel, trying not to turn around or beg forgiveness. Maybe he'll miss the exit, just drive until they find her magical normal-normal suburb so that she could trot up some manicured walkway to a boring husband and two point five adopted children, since he'd taken the chance of her own from her. Picket fences, Irish setter, parade of heart attack victims and plain vanilla old folks splayed across her morgue table. Maybe that would suit her, he thinks, as they grind into the parking lot. He feels guilty later and turns his plate so she can steal his fries, but she is looking out the window.

The informant is an unqualified whacko.

VII.

She is asleep, her breath a rhythmic fog on the window. Her hair has drifted across her face like autumn coming on. He can see the pulse in her neck. The compact loveliness of her startles him: pulse, respiration, the flicker of muscle as she shifts. She is so solid: the brace of arm from wrist to shoulder as she sights along her gun, the stance of her when they argue. Her skin in the moonlight looks bluish, the milky color of old marbles. She had been almost heavy in his arms, that time in Antarctica, as he'd struggled to clothe her in the meager layers of down and Goretex. The two of them in the clothes he'd worn, sharing his warmth, sharing his skin. As he'd lifted her, he'd caught his own scent on her neck. Her damp skin, bare inside his parka. The two of them breathing in the defiance of the fathomless cold.

And now this, after the whacko. Each of them lost in particular frustrated solitude inside the cocoon of the rental car. The sussuration of tires on the highway. The clear air of the desert so unlike DC, with its concrete memories of swampiness. Go west, young man, he thinks as the car spins northeast back to the cluster of lights where their hotel hunches around a rock garden. Go west and grow up with your country. That made three times this year he'd dragged her along, restless in the bullpen, craving the nocturnal thrill of exchanged information. Cloak and dagger, he would say, thinking of spy movies. Like taking a woman's number in a dark bar, Scully would say, Mulder, what were you thinking?

VIII.

He shows up on her doorstep at Halloween, painted corpse grey with false stitches inked over the real scars. "Trick or treat," he rumbles, and she steps aside.

"You know Frankenstein was the doctor, Mulder."

"Didn't your mother ever warn you about things that go bump in the night?" he says over his shoulder on the way to the candy bowl, but she ducks past him and rations out three bite-size bars into his palm. "No apples? No granola? Why, Doctor Scully, what wicked indulgence. You're letting these kids live it up."

She half-shrugs, her shoulder cantilevered by the crook of the opposite eyebrow. Scully at equilibrium. "Any remnant of true ritual has been superceded by the commercialized sugar high, Mulder. The offering's only a gesture at the amalgamation of centuries of superstition and pagan belief."

"And yet," he murmurs, "think of the dental bills."

Her mouth quirks. In her line of work, he supposes, they appreciate distinctive dentition. "Not my watch. Plus, I like my windows unegged."

They watch bad monster movies on tv, punctuated by commercials and insistent variations on ghouls, heroes, and cartoon princesses. She rambles on about Samhain and Egyptian ritual and the bourgeois dilution of tradition until he unwraps a candy bar and pushes it between her lips. Not that he doesn't love to hear her talk, especially about fertility and death and holy holies and the human tendency to enjoy having the hell scared out of them, but it's Plan Nine From Outer Space and this is the good part.

She swallows, licks her lips, waits for commercial, worries a bit of peanut from between her back teeth. "I was you with all that Samhain stuff, you know. I don't think they sell Flowbees anymore, but I thought about stealing your awful ties."

"You may talk the talk, Scully, but you'll never encompass the Mulder mystique." She grimaces at him. "You're too short and too functional."

She brushes her knuckles against his knee and pretends it's an accident. "Happy Halloween, Mulder."

"Happy Halloween, Scully." He thinks his heart is growing three sizes larger, wrong season or not.

IX.

She pushes his hair back from his injured brow with a remarkable tenderness for a diagnostic. He touches the small of her back in possessive deference. They do not speak of this. It is a language of bodies, all fingertips and shoulders and the comfortable bump of knees under tables that are too small.

He steals her keys at Christmas out of hope.

They are often at odds. He knows she is seeing Diana around corners. The consummation goes on devoutly wished and entirely unconsummated; they are both restless with only their own skins around them. He is still hearing Padgett's voice on a loop (the lurid whisper, the revelation she didn't flinch from, so how could it be true except that she is not the swooning type), still seeing Ed Jerse's all-American face and blistered arm. The precedent of her lovers depresses him, but then, she's not tall, dark, and top-heavy. Tastes change.

He worries that he loves her by association. He worries that she tolerates him simply because she's used to him. In the daylight, in the office, their lives feel so ordinary. Two hired guns for the FBI, overeducated, underpaid, no scope at all for the kind of epic love he wants to believe they could share someday when they get around to saying it. When they find a safe space. "Son," says the bottom of the whiskey bottle some nights, "you're delusional."

He wants to believe.

"All right," she says at Christmas, exasperated, "I'm afraid. But it's an irrational fear." Scully tough as textbooks, always reaching for the quantifiable and the explicable. Love they can't riddle away so they ignore it, mired together in their apprehension, except for shining moments like Christmas morning, months ago. He knows this fear is rational, this fear of this, of them, as real and rational as his fear of Them, the consortiums, the shadow-men. She is not afraid, he thinks. She is not afraid of anything. She has confronted her demons and emerged cool and whole. But they push each other away.

He can't decide what he wants. Only her, to have and to hold away. She is exactly right and exactly wrong and there are days he wants to claim her and days he wants to put half the world between them for one reason or another. Mostly he just wants to go on like this, idle days in the basement. Funny. He can't remember when he stopped trying to keep her at arm's length. She was the spy sent in from the cold. Now she holds the earth steady as they boxstep around the space between them, though she sidles up almost under his arm now and then.

An ordinary stakeout, undercover work for someone else, placating the powers that be. They are in a restaurant. He has his arm slung over her shoulders, for verisimilitude, he tells himself. She doesn't quite lean into his side and toys with her drink: tonic with a twist. He murmurs nothings about the news, about some new article he read on acupuncture for abductees. She tips her head up and peers over his chin to give him the skeptical glare.

"Mulder, why do I think you have an appointment for tomorrow morning with this acupuncturist?"

"Hey," he says, "I'm not an abductee. But if you want to go...."

She starts to turn away, gives him the one-eyed fisheye. He is startled by the depth of blue of her eyes in the dim. Just as he starts to worry he's stirred up too much of the aching past, she shifts her hip against his.

"I'm packing," she reminds him. Her lips pucker in that amused way that makes him think of a perfect plum he ate on a summer beach, half-stolen out of a joint packed lunch as Samantha picked the crusts off her sandwich.

"Come on, Scully," he prods teasingly. "Maybe if you clear your chi, the crazies will quit following you around."

"I sincerely doubt it," she says, and for a moment, her head touches his shoulder. "Isn't that what we're here for tonight?"

Let's ditch it, he wants to say. You and me and a pizza and some beers, what do you say? Forget this Bureau shit. Dinner and a movie.

But she's already scanning the room again over the rim of her tonic, though she's still settled against him. He sighs and picks up a cold fry, leftover from what used to be lunch - they wouldn't let the waitress clear the table. Skinner spooked her pretty good too, Mulder thinks, wondering if he can flag the girl down for a piece of pie. But she's pinballing her way across the far edge of her section, avoiding them.

"You know it's Shark Week on the Discovery Channel?" he says experimentally.

"Should have led with the Mystery Science Theatre marathon," Scully counters.

"Scully!" he says, charmed.

"I get the TV Guide too, Mulder." She flashes a quick grin. "Better than skin mags."

"Research." He cranes his head. "Is that Grubeck?"

"Or his twin," Scully says grimly. Mulder lifts the arm from her shoulders and waves at Grubeck, who makes his way slowly to them.

"What's going on?" Scully says. "Is the surveillance over?"

"Dincha hear? Team shagged 'im block from here four hours ago." Grubeck squints at them. "Finito."

Mulder feels his eyes tighten with anger. Deliberately forgotten, left in this restaurant. For himself he minds less, but Scully doesn't deserve it. Grubeck shifts from one pudgy foot to the other.

"Well," says Scully dryly. "Looks like there is such a thing as a free lunch. Or at least an expensed lunch." She drains her tonic and touches his arm.

It was easier to be alone, but the rough joy she raises in him is a better armor than misery. He stands tall, towering over Grubeck, and ghosts along behind Scully as she strides out of the place, his fingertips grazing her spine. It is one of those DC end-of-summer evenings: the air is thick and gold as honey, so that breathing is a slow effort. Scully's idea of civvies is a tank top and a filmy skirt that looks as if she inherited it from Melissa: Mulder admires the bronzy glaze of sunset on her collarbones. She stops abruptly at a corner and props her hands on her hips.

"I feel like smacking the crap out of something," she announces. "Let's go to the batting cages."

He loops his arms around her when they get there, reminding her how to hold the bat; they both pretend she's forgotten. The nape of her neck smells like a picnic. He tries not to breathe her in too noisily. She plants her shoulders against his chest and crows when they connect. Later, tired of the machine, he lobs easy underhanded pitches for her and teases her for the wiggle of her hips as she sets up to swing.

"Technique," she insists, and slaps one back at him so hard and fast he has to dodge.

XI.

That night, like every night, he can't believe he doesn't say it.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Beginner Review

Animal Crossing has been around since April 14, 2001, with its first release from the franchise for the Nintendo GameCube. Since then Nintendo has built a loyal fan-based community of individuals who’ve fallen in love with the game. Trying to be non-biased in this review (I’ll try my best!) I’m going to explain the positives and negatives of the recently released Animal Crossing game called Animal Crossing New Horizons which came out March 20, 2020. Every part of the review will be broken up into sections so you can read specifically the part you’re looking for. This is going to be a very long and extensive review covering hopefully everything you need to know about the game and whether or not you should obtain it if you haven’t already.

Who is Animal Crossing For?

The rating for Animal Crossing is for anyone 3+ and is family-friendly.

The point of the game is to build up an island filled with animals who are your neighbors which later on become your “best friends.” It falls under the category of social simulation. When you’re building up this utopian island you’ll notice it starting from the very beginning with lots of grassy areas, trees, weeds, and some flowers here and there. As you progress forward you get a town hall, market store, clothing store, and a museum. You’ll also, have other animals who want to move to your island so you’ll start to see more houses that you find the placing for in Animal Crossing New Horizons. This is something not yet seen in the Animal Crossing franchise. We were never able to choose where we could put an animal's house. They would just randomly build anywhere. This is a nice feature we’ve been given this time around!

Game Progression Shops and Lore of the Game:

Nook’s Cranny: The Market

During the progression of the game, the Nook’s Cranny ran by Timmy and Tommy two young raccoons that aren’t blood-related to Tom Nook. Both Timmy and Tommy are apprentices of Tom Nook’s Tom Nook considers himself more of a mentor or teacher. He is known for wanting to teach others good economic principles to help them from suffering financially in the future and making the same mistakes he had made. Their names were revealed in Animal Crossing New Leaf and this time around they’ve joined us as the shop owners of Nook’s Cranny in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

You’ll start with basically a wooden shack called Nook’s Cranny and with time you’ll slowly build up to an actual market store almost looking like a cute little town flower shop from the outside. This will continue to change during the progression of the game. However, to be honest I haven’t gotten far enough in the game yet to see the other changes that there supposedly are.

Dodo Airlines and Mystery Island Tours:

Airport Itself:

Dodo Airlines is a new part of Animal Crossing New Horizons this is a more organized way of being able to visit other friends and players islands. Before in other Animal Crossing games such as Animal Crossing New Leaf, you would go into a small building that was a train station. There would be a monkey that would grant you access to leave to other towns. Instead, they have an airport in New Horizons it’s run by two characters Dodo Orville and Dodo Wilbur. This is also where you can invite others to visit your town. From here they’ve added new things such as Mystery Tours which you’re able to take by using a Nook Miles Ticket. This will take you to a random island that contains bug, fish, items, and other resources that may not be accessible on your island. Some islands have special trees such as bamboo, foreign fruit trees, and rare flowers, The foreign fruit trees will always be the same foreign fruit.

I’ll be honest from my experience every time I’ve used a Nook Miles ticket to do the Mystery Island tours I’ve yet to come across an island with resources I didn’t already have on my starter island. For example, the fruit I started with was apples. I’ve only had Mystery islands with Apples and Peaches so far. I currently have both fruits so I only obtain those fruits on the Mystery Island tours to sell them for a small amount of money on my island. So just know it will be possible if you’re anything like me that you’ll keep getting islands with non-special properties. Or maybe I’m just unlucky?

Harv’s Island:

Another thing that’s unlocked at the airport is at a certain point in the game you’ll have access to travel to a place called Harv’s Is; and which is new and specific to only Animal Crossing New Horizons. This is also shortly termed as phototopia and is a photo studio you can go to and take pictures with the animals in your town. Set up rooms the way YOU want them with PROPS, have as many characters as you would like in the photo, and take photos with character summoned via amiibo figurines which are store-bought action figures if collecting those are your style.

Post Office:

Dodo airlines though it is an airport it doubles as the post office. Back in past Animal Crossing games in the franchise, there was its own separate post office you could go too. Now everything is contained in one place which honestly I find nice. Only because I feel it takes up fewer buildings on the island and more room to make your island your own. Doubling as the post office you’re able to send your postcards and letters via a card stand in the airport. When the card stand is accessed via your character the player can choose between multiple designs for their letters. Some of the letters will be marked with “Limited Availability” these are cards that are only available for purchase until the dates that are listed on the card. Sending a letter costs 200 bells and they’re able to be sent to a current resident of the player’s island, your future self, or a player from another town who is on their “best friends” list via the online service on your new Nook phone (which will be discussed later in this review).

Dodo Codes:

Previously in other Animal Crossing versions, you only had the option to invite or go to an island. However, now there’s an added safety precaution if the players want to use it in New Horizons. This option is called Dodo codes. These codes are five-character passwords that allow the players to visit your island or someone else's island even without having to be friends on the Nintendo Switch. The number of characters that can be on a single island has doubled since previous games in the franchise from four to eight people on an island at any given time.

Multiplayer Access and Rules:

A few things that have changed from previous versions of Animal Crossing:

If you go to another person island and you’re not a “best friend” on their island you’ll be unable to use tools such as shovels, axes, watering cans, fishing rods, and nets.

You’re able to move objects inside of your house even if other players are inside the house with you.

Actions that can’t be performed with an open airport gate:

Buying items via Nook Shopping (via Nook stop or the App)

Changing a design pattern

Inviting an animal to your Campsite via Amiibo

Using Island Designer

Visiting another island (Including Mystery Tours and Harv’s Island)

Sending a card via the card stand at the airport

Actions that cannot be performed with visitors on the island:

Picking up, placing or moving any outdoor furniture

Placing (but not removing) fences

Picking up, placing or moving furniture inside your house (unless all visitors are outside the home)

Using the overview mode for designing your house

Donating items to the museum or having fossils assessed

Wisp will refuse to accept collected spirit pieces (something you’ll find out about later on in your gameplay)

Tom Nook and Isabelle don’t provide any services

Island residents don’t accept gifts

Hitting rocks (without eating fruit) doesn’t provide any resources

Balloons won’t appear to use a slingshot on

Misc gameplay changed with visitors on the island:

Fishbait doesn’t work but is consumed

Wasps, scorpions, and tarantulas don’t spawn

K.K. Slider concerts have the music sent by mail the next day rather than in pockets

There is no entry fee for the Fishing Tourney and other rule changes.

As you can see the airport is the main hub for everything you do multiplayer related. This is pretty much the new hub in your game, yes you can consider the Town Hall as your main hub. But only when it comes to single-player actions. Which now brings me to the Town Hall.

Town Hall (AKA Residential Services):

Town Hall is a little bit different then what it was in past versions of the game... It’s gotten a facelift to catch up with the other advancements that have been added. You’ll quickly learn that Residential Services is the most important aspect of building on your island. This is where you’ll learn all of the basics when it comes to crafting in the game and deciding where you build features such as bridges around your island. Most bridges ahead of time cost you 168,000 bells so keep saving those bells and don’t spend them all of the time. You’ll thank me later on in the progression of the game if you decide to buy it. As you develop your island, the services inside and the exterior of the building will change. You’ll start with a tent for the Residential Services which will later become a grand beautiful Town Hall in the middle of your town with cobblestone right out front of it.

What you can do at Residential Services:

DIY workbench to craft new items

Nook stop which is the Island ATM (this is your bank, shopping catalog like sears, and the Nook Miles shop all in one)

Recycling box (you can pick up these items and either sell them or keep them for yourself I’ve gotten materials when I was low and some nice furniture from it)

Tom Nook and the services he provides, an example is paying off your loan, expanding your home, building bridges and inclines, terraforming, moving buildings, and so much more.

The Residential Services building is open 24 hours a day seven days a week. To unlock Isabelle which yes she is in this game which was super exciting for me when I started playing it. She provides information and services to better improve your island and the characters who live on it. Some of the services she performs are as followed:

Island evaluations (as if your real-life work evaluations weren’t enough for ya!)

Changing the island tune

Changing the island flag

The ability to change certain aspects, such as the catchphrase of a villager. (which I have yet to experience but have heard about this feature)

When you upgrade your Residential Services to Town Hall after a few days of playing the game a lot of characters will come to visit your towns such as Label, Redd, Leif, and the skunk who sells the shoes from Kick’s shoe store. They have small little stands in the cobblestone square right in front of the Town Hall. But keep in mind they only come on specific days during the week.

Blather’s Museum:

Yes, I called it Blather’s Museum instead of just Museum just saying the museum is soooo boring! This is where everything you collect such as fossils, fish, bugs, and now artwork go. You’re able to make donations to the museum and visit whenever you would like. At the time of typing this post, it is National Museum week. From May 18th- May 31st there is a stamp collection event at your Museum. You have to play the game to get the Museum on your island. This is also an unlockable place but not hard to obtain just by playing the game you’re able to obtain it rather quickly.

Able Sisters Clothing Store:

This is another place you unlock after unlocking the Town Hall in the middle of your island. Who could forget the able sister's store? the main place for character customization! and let me tell you the clothes so far in New Horizons are worth the game itself. There are so many cute outfits I’ve bought so many and wasted so many bells on clothes I can’t even tell you how much was bought on impulse. This store will be a money sucker in New Horizons. This is unlocked after one of the able sisters visits your island with her tiny kiosk in front of Town Hall. It takes a few days to unlock but it’s easy to do so once you unlock the able sisters you gain more in-game features., One of these features is the return of pattern design and custom content designs. This can also be done via your Nook phone.

Some background information about the Able Sisters clothing shop. The shop is owned and ran by two sisters Sable and Mable otherwise known as the able sisters. The store was run and owned by their parents before they had inherited it after their parents had suffered a fatal sewing accident. Sable inherited the store and also takes care of her younger sister Mabel.

Designs:

Let’s talk about Designs! after unlocking the Able Sisters clothing store in New Horizons you’ll have access to the design kiosk which can be accessed via the Able Sisters store. Designs are player-created patterns that allow the player to create customizable objects that best suit their needs in the game. This can be clothing, headgear, umbrellas, paintings, wallpaper, flooring, and outside paths and landscaping.

PRO Designs:

A PRO design is considered to be a more advanced design. Unlike regular designs, the PRO designs have the pattern on the reverse and obverse on the clothing which means the player can customize the front, back, and each sleeve. PRO designs take up one pattern slot and just like normal patterns can be displayed and used through the Able Sisters store.

Sharing Designs:

When the player first uses the Custom Designs Kiosk in the back of the Able Sisters store once the store is unlocked. They’re assigned a creator code, which can be shared and used by other players to find all of the code owner’s designs. Individual designs are also assigned a unique code when posted. Using this feature requires you to have an active Nintendo Online subscription which is one of the cheapest subscriptions I’ve ever paid for a video game console subscription to use multiplayer features in games. Highly recommend buying if you haven’t already.

Currently from what I’m aware of these are all of the shops you unlock early in the game. I’m sure there are more but as I continue to play I’ll continue to update this post for everyone to keep the data relevant.

Crafting:

In New Horizons they’ve introduced a new game-specific modification. Crafting! this is so different, new, and yet exciting for an Animal Crossing game and this is the first time something like this has ever been seen in the franchise. Crafting in the game can be used to make tools, furniture, and other various items in the game. Crafting is done through DIY Recipes. Your island has a huge flow of natural resources to craft with that can be used to make tools consistently. Trust me you’ll be crafting tools way more than anything else. In this game, your tools get worn out a break after a while of use except for the vaulting pole that has yet to break for me since I’ve made it. This is a nice sense of false security since all of my other tools break consistently. Below are the steps for crafting as explained by the official Animal Crossing New Horizons website.

An Interview with Wig Worland

If you walked into a WHSmiths during the 1990s, then chances are that you will have seen the high-calibre work of Wig Worland.

As a photographer at seminal skateboard magazines like R.A.D. and Sidewalk, his sharp eye helped capture a relatable world of British skating, a million miles away from sun-drenched California schoolyards.

First question - when did you start taking photos? Was there something that set you off with it?

I started in school when one of the better teachers realised I wasn't going anywhere academically and lent me her camera. I don't think there was anything else I could have done to be honest. I started to assist photographers straight out of school.

How did you end up doing skate photography? What was the camera set-up back then?

I grew up near an adventure playground. One day in the early ‘80s a quarter pipe with 'Skatopia' written on it appeared there. We would ride our BMX bikes on it. A few weeks later a guy called Wurzel appeared - he literally dropped over the fence.

All of us, including Wurzel, rode bikes for a bit but as the world transformed around us we all got into skateboarding. One of my best friends at the time was London street skating legend Phil Chapman. He let me take pictures of him and I got better at it.

It’s funny how when you're young it just doesn't occur to you that those are the formative years, even though that’s what every older person is saying to you at the time.

My first camera was a Canon FTB with a 24mm lens - I couldn't afford a fisheye lens. I then wasted more time and energy on a 17mm lens. It was really terrible, but I did get my first picture published in RAD using it.

What was that?

A guy called Doc with a chuck on handrail at the bus station in Milton Keynes in an article in R.A.D. in 1990. In the same article came my second and third published picture. It was such a pivotal moment in my life but just like buses, three came along at once.

Do you remember the first photo you took where you thought, “I’m getting quite good at this”?

Not any single shot, but I think when I got to shoot Manzoori or Channer or Wainwright, I was beginning to shoot people who were making great pictures all the time. The trips back and forth to the lab became less fuelled with anxiety and worry about what I was doing.

So something must have been going right, maybe I knew enough about the dark art of shooting on slide film that I could relax into it. A bit anyway.

The late 80s and early 90s are quite a while ago now. What are some things people forgot about that time?

There was no Instagram! There wasn't anywhere other than the monthly magazines (and of course books) to get any information about anything. It really is odd to say it now because we are all so used to finding anything out that we want to know immediately.

My sister has a theory that technology is making us all more stupid. We simply don't have to retain any information anymore. To get from place to place you don't even need a sense of direction, just flick on 'Waze' or whatever and it tells you where to go.

How weird was it to be a skater or a rider in the late 80s? Obviously now skating is going through another 'cool wave', but how much stick did you get back then for it?

We got so much hassle from everybody at the time. It’s ridiculous when you think about how 'cool' it all is now. We didn’t care at all though. We knew what we were doing was way more important than simply school or fashion or T.V. or whatever else our other friends or peers were into. We were involved in making something happen.

R.A.D. was split fairly evenly between skating and riding. Was there much of a divide at the time? And what were your opinions on the other avenues of raditude?

I'll fully admit it; I went from BMX to skateboard. I was probably a little too young to catch the first wave of skateboarding in the UK. I was six or seven and my mum wouldn't let me have a board, though my best mate at the time had much older brothers so I can claim to have ridden a Logan Earth Ski in the 70s.

By the time BMX hit I was a little more in control of my life. I saved up my lunch money for an entire year so I could buy a Kuwahara ET. My friends and I had so much fun knocking about on those bikes in the 80s — it was amazing. Before I knew it I'd given up BMX 'racing’ and was getting more serious about BMX 'freestyle' (which really is an oxymoron when you stop to think about it).

Within a year or two I had switched to a GT Performer and I was entering freestyle 'contests' and wearing ever more dodgy clothing. Obviously we didn't know it at the time but they really were the formative years of my life.

A good friend from that time, Lee Reynolds moved to California and went on to become a very successful freestyle pro rider with Haro. Back then we all hung out at Mons ramp like one big happy family, and that’s where I started to meet more people.

As BMX started to die, I just moved my attention to skateboarding. There was just so much to get into. You can do way more stuff with a skateboard than a bike! Sorry to the entire BMX community.

What were you looking at for inspiration back then? Even your early photos had a definite style.

I was looking at BMX Action and BMX Plus from America that would appear periodically in the newsagents near my school. Then Freestylin' and Transworld, and Thrasher when I could find it. Back then Thrasher wasn't quite so appealing — it was half a music magazine with really cheap paper, and was scrappy compared to glossier titles of the day. It’s amazing how Thrasher has outlasted them all.

I loved Spike and Windy, and, obviously J Grant Britain, but I also really love TLB's pictures. He really was an amazing complete photographer - properly trained and much better than me. Now I have had a chance to see the stuff in the RAD archive, I can't begin to say how amazing it is. It might not have looked all that good in the mag but that was because of the awful print quality. When the book comes out you’ll see what I mean.

R.A.D. faded into the shortly-lived Phat in the early 90s. How did Sidewalk come about?

Andy Horsely and I were doing a magazine called The System during the last days of TLB R.A.D. When R.A.D. was sold to yet another publisher that was out of town, Tim didn’t want to leave London. He thought it was a dead end. By a series of strange occurrences Andy Horsely and I managed to get ourselves in the door at R.A.D. There’s a bit more to this story, but the full version will be in the book hopefully.

Whereas early skate magazines had their fair share of day-glo high-top fashions and boned-out, high-zoot grabs, Sidewalk had a much more British look. Was this intentional? Or was this just a reflection of the times?

It was absolutely intentional. We wanted it to look like a British skate magazine, and perhaps naively, we wanted it to feature all British people, in Britain. The US skate magazine culture was, and still is, so dominant, but we wanted to showcase the UK.

At the time the world was beginning to see Rowley, Penny and Wainwright but we knew there was so much more. Making an all-British magazine was way more difficult than any of us imagined and I'm not sure how sustainable that idea was (and still is). We tried our very best given the resources we had.

Was there things you wouldn't photograph - maybe dodgy outfits or questionable moves?

We had an unspoken ban on the Benihana at Sidewalk. Ha! I wonder if anyone else would admit to that. Everything else was totally fine. We even put Dan Cates in the mag with all his craziness for heaven’s sake!

The mid-90s seemed like the real glory days of magazines. They were thick, they came out once a month, they had all sorts of mad stuff in them… and they could all be bought from WHSmiths for a few quid. Why do you reckon there were so many good mags around at this time?

It was really the only way to communicate before the internet really took a grip. Nowadays, you put your tricks up on Instagram and let the world judge you. Back then, we shot the photo, we took it to the lab, and then it was sent off to be printed in cyan, magenta, yellow and black on paper.

After a lot of fuss and bother, the magazine hit the shelves and the rest of the world could see the moments that I had had all to myself. It really was an incredible moment. I'm not sure I'd go back to it though! It was pretty insular and created some difficult politics. It's probably a bit more democratic now. If you don't like what somebody is doing, you 'unfollow' them and that's that.

What was a typical day like back in the early Sidewalk days? Was there a typical day?

Probably wake up late and head to the office via the lab, to pick up the film from the previous day. Maybe pet the dog when I got there for a bit. Horse would invariably arrive later than me and we'd get lunch. After looking through some pictures on the light table I'd head out to shoot skaters in various parts of the country.

One day I'd be in Hull, the next in Birmingham and the next in London. It was a pretty insane schedule to be honest.

I’ve said this before in other interviews but I’ll say it again, I hated driving up and down the motorway system in the UK, but I loved the people I met along the way. I really don’t think there was anyone that I didn’t like — it was incredible. A good example of this is driving to Hull, which is a really long way from anywhere. But when I got there, there was Eggy and Banksy and Scott. Amazing people.

This might be a bit of a camera tech guy question… but imagine I’m stood at the top of that flatbank hip at Radlands and a young Tom Penny is cruising towards me… how do I capture the action? Should I pan? Is my flash mounted on the top of my camera… or on a cable… or on a stand? What film should I use?

If you're at a comp it's best that your flash is mounted on your camera, because if you’re trying to be clever like I was in the 90s trying to use an off-camera flash on a lead (Windy Osborn/Spike Jonze style) you're going to miss a lot of shots. Yes, always pan with the subject if you can, it's just better and I'd use whatever film you can afford. It’s really expensive and you only have 36 to 39 shots depending on how clever, or stupid, your camera is.

If it’s not contest day then spend a little longer on your lighting. But not so long that you forget to shoot the scene, the look of the place and the informal portraits of the skaters. You’ll regret that later on if you don’t shoot that stuff. Ahem…

Sidewalk did a very good job of making some fairly drab looking spots pretty good. That photo of a lad named Cookie gapping from a Carpet Right car park in the rain comes to mind… something like that could easily look pretty depressing in lesser hands. What were your tricks for making these fairly everyday places look decent?

Bring your own sun — a portable flash. Oh, and a little jiggery pokery with the slide film we were using as well. Also, know what you’re doing, and how the film is going to react to the light. Photography is all about various kinds of lies to create the shot you want.

I’m glad you remembered that Cookie shot because it is pretty special. He was such an amazing, positive person. Never mind my photograph, but how did a person stay positive when you had such terrible conditions to skate in! It’s not exactly California.

Pretty much sums up how we should all approach life, the Cookie story...

I don’t know if I’m looking into this too much, but a lot of the Sidewalk stuff celebrated British culture rather than disguise it. I’m not sure where I’m going with this question, but do you think it’s important that people embrace their situation, rather than endlessly dream of California?

My entire life’s philosophy is to draw out what you can from the place where you are, rather than dreaming that somewhere else has the answer. This ridiculous dreaming is the reason that the air is so polluted these days with people crossing the world on long haul flights to wherever and with people driving from perfectly fine A, to almost certainly nearly the same B.

Of course all this is fine for me to say, I don’t have a car but I live in London where there is a brilliantly sophisticated Public transport system. I grew up in Milton Keynes so it wasn’t a shock to get to California and see the state they’re in, but I truly believe the car has ruined a lot. Not least for our children who can no longer play in the streets primarily because of the number of vehicles on the road. Rant over.

Haha fair enough. What were some of the hassles of making a magazine back then? Any camera mishaps or blatant errors come to mind?

Radio slaves were terrible but they still are. That’s the nature of radio waves in a very wet country. There was some dodgy kit but you could usually spot it pretty quickly and pass it on. I did have all my cameras stolen from the boot of my car once which did feel like the end of the world at the time. Grant Brittain very kindly sent me one of his old cameras and a fish eye to start me off again and Pete Hellicar rang round all the big names in the industry in the UK asking for donations to get me started again. Really kind, amazing people.

The problems were always with the printers or repro people. Handing over your precious photographs and layouts to people who aren’t as invested in the project shall we say. Having said that, there weren’t that many problems, only ever issues that the editor or I would notice.

I’d say skate photography fits under the documentary category, but how far would you go to get a better photo? I know moving the occasional rucksack out of shot is fairly commonplace, but I’ve heard stories of photographers carrying around brighter clothes for people to wear so they stand out more.

There are a few skaters who would bring their own brighter clothes for the shoot. Have a look through my shots and see if you can guess who they are for a fun game. I think this is brilliant.

I don't think that skateboard photography is documentary at all. It’s a collaboration between the skateboarder and the photographer to produce the best image they possibly can.

What about the days when nothing happened? Surely there must have been a few afternoons when no one was feeling it, or did the fact you had a big camera bag egg people on a bit? It rains a lot in Britain, I'm sure you've noticed. On those days, if you were lucky, we'd sit about in the local Skateshop. If we were less lucky we'd get caught at the local indoor skate park and wait for the rain to stop. I remember thinking then that I would never get that time back, now of course if I had that time back I would do just the same thing. Amazing days. I'm sure people did feel motivated by having a magazine photographer in town to shoot pictures of them yes, but that just makes me wonder what it's like now? You can literally shoot a picture whenever you like and upload it anywhere.

Do you think these advances in technology have improved skate photography or not?

I would have killed for a digital camera back when I was shooting skateboarding every day. I’d not only have been able to see what I had in terms of stills, but shooting sequences would have had a lot less pressure involved as well. A couple of people have said that seeing the used rolls of bails lining up on the stairs or pavement beside me gave them extra incentive to land the trick, but it made for some pretty heated sessions.

The Chris Oliver kickflip off a bus stop into bank with another drop springs to mind. Fair play to the ginger genius though, he bloody landed it, and he can say he did it on film as well. So, so sick.

Did you enjoy doing sequence shots or was it just a case of documenting the new tech?

I wasn't really interested in shooting sequences to be honest, I always thought that was the job of the video camera. In some ways I wish I stuck with that attitude and concentrated on the style of the skater rather than the high tech that they could put down. I think that would have made for a more interesting back catalogue.

This is maybe another fairly camera-orientated question, but I’m interested, so the casual readers will have to suffer… you were maybe one of the first skate photographers to push the studio-lighting style out into the real world. What led to this development?

Ollie Barton thinks I was the first to do the studio on the street thing. I guess other people had tried using flash slaves off camera before, but I made it my own. I was the first out there with portable studio flash which had more spread of light than the dedicated flashes made by camera manufactures. I'm sure I was responsible for keeping the Lumedyne brand going for a while. Lumedyne really are the most terrible looking lights that have ever come to market, made from bits bought from Maplin or Radio Shack, but they worked quite well and everybody had them in the early 2000s.

Did setting up multiple flashes in ropey areas ever become a problem?

It's funny you know, I never felt odd about setting up lighting anywhere. If you’re prepared to pop a light out on a dodgy estate then you’re serious about getting something done. I think most people whoever they are respect that, some are even interested in it.

There were a few hairy moments — like a car taking out a light in downtown Stockport while shooting late at night. But the light was in the middle of the street, so that one was on me. Nobody ever picked one up and legged it. Not once, but as I said they don't look expensive so maybe that was enough.

Maybe a bit of an obvious question, but do you have a favourite photograph you’ve taken? And are there any photos which you wish you took?

As I rather flippantly alluded to earlier, I don’t feel I shot anywhere near enough incidental stuff. I was too interested in making the lighting right to capture the trick perfectly. If I could go back I’d have a point and shoot with me at all times and I’d use it constantly.

I don’t have a favourite photograph. There are just too many, of so many amazing friends and brilliant talented people. I couldn’t pick one above all others.

Today it’s easier than ever to take a photograph. Is this good or bad? Has the advent of phone-based camera gadgetry devalued the art (or at least the science) of photography?

No, it hasn't devalued it. Because more people have cameras, more people are interested in photography. If you want to lug around a huge old school view camera to shoot pictures then there are sub-genres of sub-cultures that can more easily facilitate that stuff nowadays. Of course more people think they can do it, but it's still the case that only some people do it well.

Have you got any wise-words you’d like to add?

No, just enjoy life as best you can. We’re not all going to be famous or millionaires, so don’t believe anyone when they tell you to follow your dreams — real life might conspire to not let you get there. Life just happens to most people.

The castle is haunted they say. Not by a ghost or evil spirit. No, it’s haunted by a curse.

They say it was once beautiful and grand with servants and nobles and treasures beyond compare. The gardens were filled with roses, marble statues, and perfectly trimmed topiaries. Now it’s gloomy, decrepit, and--

“I...can’t…” Hunk breathes on his hands. He shakes his head and steels himself. “I can’t...believe I’m doing this.”

The mayor of Hunk’s village chained the gates with several locks to keep children out, though the frightful appearance of the place should do that enough for anyone.There’s no way he can unlock the padlocks on the gate and he can’t climb over it but he doesn’t need to do either of those things. Not when he has a little clever ingenuity on his side.

He pulls two tools from his apron under the coat to get started. With his hammer and flathead driver he nails into the rusted pin in the hinge. It takes a considerable amount of effort but the first pin pops out. The second one is harder but he manages. Then it’s as easy as one, two, th--

It pushes open with a rusted clang. A little more finagling and he’s able to squeeze through. He reaches through the hole he’s made and grabs his lantern, still lit but flickering. He gives it a little more oil and makes the trek up to the castle.

“No such things as monsters, Hunk,” he reminds himself as he shivers. “No such thing as monsters. Or ghosts. Or evil witches. Or--”

He lets out a frightened squeak as a crow overhead caws at him.

“Just...it’s just a crow…” he says aloud. “Nothing to...be frightened of. Pull yourself together.”

Hunk reaches the castle and stares up at the looming edifice before him. Dingy stone and--wow! Those were glass windows once. Colored glass. Must have been expensive and beautiful at one time but now they’re just as clouded as the stone. Much of it is cracked and broken as well.

Such a...shame.

He comes up to the door and hesitates. What if it won’t open? There are no hinges for him to pop here. He’ll have to climb the window if its lock--

But it opens. The doors are heavy and Hunk has to plant his feet and push his shoulder into it but it budges. A little at first but then something releases in it and the door swings open, making him fall into the entrance way. His body thumps hard on the ground and the sound echoes through the receiving hall.

Hunk freezes in place and listens for any sound. Nothing at first but then whispering. Like someone is in the other room gossiping quietly. But this room is empty. Hunk doesn’t see anyone at all and swallows nervously before standing.

What was that about ghosts not being real?

“Who goes there?”

“Who is it?”

“A man. Perhaps he’s lost?”

“Look at him shiver. Poor thing.”

“Keith, go light the fire, before she wakes.”

“No, he should leave. It isn’t safe here.”

“You’re going to scare him.”

There are so many voices. And all of them different. But search as he may with his lantern he sees nothing. Not even wisps from which he might conclude were spirits.

“H-Hello?” Hunk squeaks.

“Shhh, you must be quiet,” says a woman’s voice.

“The beast is sleeping.”

“You should leave or you’ll end up in ribbons,” says a man’s voice, clearly annoyed.

“Who’s...who’s there?” Hunk asks taking a step in and raising his lamp. “Wait, a...a beast? That story’s real?”

“Yes, she’s asleep. You must be quiet,” says another man, voice calm and collected.

“Or just leave.”

“Shut it Keith, can’t you see he’s here for a reason?”

“What is your reason? Why are you here?”

Ghosts, Hunk figures. He just can’t see them. Perhaps they can tell him what he needs to know. If what he’s looking for isn’t here then...he can just leave. And he won’t have to run into the--he swallows nervously--the beast.

“I’m looking...for a book,” he whispers and closes the door. Not all the way. It’s open just a crack so he can yank it open and run if he needs to.

“A book?”

“He wants a book?”

“Just like the late duchess.”

“What kind of book?”

“On tonics and tinctures,” he whispers as he looks around the entrance.

Torn oil paintings and tapestries shredded. The curtains block all light that could come in to go out. They haven’t been moved in decades considering the layer of dust on them. Broken pottery from once beautiful vases.

But there is an odd sight. A clean trail from the stairs leading up into the other wings to the room off to the right. Like it's walked with some frequency. The trail is...smaller than he thought it would be for something as fearsome as a beast.

“Do you have any? On maladies or maybe medicine?” Hunk asks, peeking his head into the next room. Empty. There’s just a tea tray with a tea set on it.

“I’m sure there are dozens, maybe hundreds, of tomes on them.”

“All of which are in the athenaeum.”

“Yes, but...it would be dangerous to visit there now,” says the woman.

“Even if he could find what he was looking for in that forest...he’d never get it out of there,” says the one Hunk’s figured is called Keith. He’s the only one with a gruff voice. “She doesn’t take kindly to looters.”

“No, no!” Hunk assures them, looking into the ceiling for the source of their voices. “I wouldn’t steal it. Never. I just...my father...he’s sick and I wanted to research a cure.”

“His father.”

“How sad.”

“I’m just...a tinkerer. I fix things, not people. I thought...maybe the library here had something,” Hunk explains. “Then I could help him. Save him. Please.”

“How noble.”

“Kind soul.”

“And a suffering heart.”

“Just like--!”

“Shh, you’re too loud, Lance!” Keith urgently whispers.

“Am not,” he grumbles.

“Keith, show him the way,” Shiro says. “To the library. Help him find it.”

“But Shiro--” he tries to object. “She’ll wake up. She’ll destroy him.”

“Is that a risk you’re willing to take young man?”

Hunk thinks back to his father. Working hard in the shop despite that awful cough. It always comes back, year after year, getting worse each time. The doctors in the village are little more than farmers with herbal remedies that do nothing. He’s been laid up for the last week in bed. By this time next year he could be…

“My name’s Hunk,” he says. “And I’ll do anything to save my father. Even face a beast in it’s own home”

“Oooo, I got chills.”

“Hunk,” says Shiro. “There is a lit candelabra to your left.”

“No, there isn--”

There is now. When did that get there? And who lit it?

Hunk puts down his own lantern and approaches it. A gorgeously made candelabra with three black candles, one in each of the arms and one in the center. Made of rose gold with swooping filigree designs. Only the candles on the arms are lit.

Something like this could buy food for a family in the village for months.

“Take it,” Shiro instructs him. “Follow Keith’s directions and stay as silent as possible.”

“Sure,” Hunk nods.

“Be careful,” says the woman. “The athenaeum is her domain and she protects it...fiercely.”

This is far more frightening than he thought it would be but for some reason he’s not shaking as he walks down the corridors. Walks softly on what’s left of long rugs that span the length of the hallways. Most of it is old and worn with the passage of time.

“Left,” whispers Keith’s voice. Almost feels like it’s coming from the candelabra in his hand but that’s just silly, isn’t it? “And hug the wall before going around.”

Hunk does what he says. Good thing too. There was a hole in the wooden floor at the intersection. An easy fix if someone had the tools and were so inclined.

“The village...they always said this place was cursed…” Hunk swallows.

“It is,” Keith reveals. “On the noble and all staff that lived here.”

“I heard the nobles died,” Hunk barely whispers.

“Not all of them,” Keith whispers. “Now be quiet. The door at the end of the hall. That’s the athenaeum. The library.”

Hunk nods and goes forward. As soon as he opens the door the candles dim. Like it knows it’s light will attract unwanted attention. Hunk swallows and steps inside.

It’s massive. Walls that go up to the ceiling, several stories high. And there are shelves built out from those walls, just as high, and full of books. When they said grand library he figured it maybe held a thousand books. But there must be anywhere between ten to twenty thousand in here. It would take him...a lifetime to read all that is in here.

And days to find a specific book.

“How is it cataloged?” Hunk barely whispers as he looks at the spines of the books.

“How would I know?” Keith huffs. “I cleaned stables and trained hounds for a living. Commoners don’t exactly get taught to read.”

“Sorry,” Hunk tells him. “Guess I’ll...just find what I can.”

“Make it fast will you?” Keith urges. “She won’t sleep forever.”

Hunk peruses the books, pulling ones without titles on the spines out to peek inside. When it isn’t what he hoped he puts it back exactly where he found it but it’s slow going. Doesn’t look like they’re organized by title. Or subject. Or even year published or country of origin. There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason to how they are organized.

There also seem to be sections of the shelves with missing books. Like someone pulled a bunch down but never replaced them. There are whole stacks of them on several reading tables. He rifles through a few of them but finds nothing but adventure novels and studies on plants. Then he spots a section across the room, a whole area that’s nothing but books stacked into towers and disorganized piles.

“Avoid that side,” Keith warns him quietly.

But they’re all on the floor. Easy access. It’ll be easier to go through them if he doesn’t have to climb up on creaky ladders. Sounds like that would wake this beast that everyone keeps talking about. This monster that rakes its claws into intruders and looters.

Hunk puts the candelabra down on the nearest table to investigate.

“No, Hunk!” Keith urgently whispers. “Don’t--”

“Shh,” Hunk mouths. “I just want to check.”

It looks like a fort built from books in all honesty. Like someone built walls and ramparts to surround--huh. A pile of blankets and bedding? What’s that about? Oh, look! The book on top of this tower is about ancient remedies in Asia!

He reaches for it but freezes stock still when something in the bedding shifts. A grumble that’s something of a low...growl.

The flame in the candles goes out. The library would be pitch dark if not for the small strip of light from an open curtain. And it’s more than enough to reveal the faint outline of the creature raising out of the nest of blankets. The cloth slips from the form before him as she stands.

Horns. A set of them. Long and twisted and...sharp looking. The head of hair from which they grow is wild and tangled, practically nothing but knotted fluff. The creature yawns, exposing gleaming sharp teeth. When finished taking in her deep breath she licks her lips.

She cracks her knuckles in loud pops which draws Hunk’s eyes down to the claws on her fingers, tapered down to the sharpest of points. Dear god, she even has hooves! She is on the short side but...everything about her screams danger...monster…

The beast.

Why can’t he move? This whole time he could have been running. To escape and get the hell out of there. But the book...it’s right there. It could be everything he needs to save his dad. She hasn’t even opened her eyes yet.

“Coran!!” she calls out her voice loud but hoarse from sleeping. She bends and picks up a book before standing again. “I’m hungry, stoke the ovens!” she commands.

“Yes milady!” calls out another voice but it sounds far away.

That’s when she turns and her eyes fall on him. Golden and suddenly blown wide. At first, she looks just as shocked as he does. Aghast that someone would dare enter her estate, let alone her library, and have the gall to be holding one of her books. Either he is very brave or very, very, stupid.

“Intruder! THIEF!” she roars, her teeth gleaming again. Hunk jolts with fear and takes a step back. “You dare trespass into my home and steal from my collection!”

“N-No!” he denies.

“Liar! And a thief! You hold one in your very hand!” she yells as she steps into the moonlight streaking in from the window. “Did you aim to sell it? I should rend you from navel to nose you insignificant flea!”

He should be more scared than this. Hell, he is scared but...he can’t stop taking her in.

Her skin is the color of lilacs. Her hair an even darker shade, almost mulberry. And those eyes...yellow as honey. Or wheat in May. Under other circumstances, he would almost think...

He doesn’t get to observe more before she rams him and hard, knocking him to the ground and straddling over him. Her face is pinched into a snarl and in one of her hands a book. Tales of the Earth Prince. She’s clutching it tight to her chest as she readies the claws on her other hand over her head.

“Any last words, filth?! Before I rip your eyes out and feed them to the wolves?!”

“Is that...your favorite book?”

Why did he say that? He’s about to get eviscerated by the foul beast in the castle, the one everyone says destroys all who enter. She’s got her hand poised perfectly to am for his eyes like she said but she hesitates. Her brow raises in perplexed confusion.

“What?”

“The book...you’re holding…’Tales of the Earth Prince’. Is it your favorite?” Hunk repeats.

“You...you can read?” she asks.

A fair question. Most common folk can’t. Hunk is a very lucky exception.

“Y-Yeah. But not that one...is it good?” Hunk tries, with a nervous smile.

The hand lowers an inch, but only an inch.

“You are a fool,” she growls, baring her teeth again. “You risked painful death to speak to a beast on fairy tales?”

“N-No,” he admits.

“Then you came to steal after all!” she scowls and raises her hand.

“N-No! Please! I didn’t! I swear!” Hunk tells her and raises the book in front of his face. Not that it would protect him much.

“Drop it or I’ll gut you!” she demands. “It’s worth far more than you are!”

“Please, I need this book!” he says. “My father is sick, I’m looking for a cure!”

No response so he elaborates further in the hopes that maybe, just maybe, she’ll sense his pure intentions and let him go. No one is that heartless, right? Not even a beast.

“And I wasn’t going to keep it! I would have brought it back, I promise!” Hunk declares, still hiding behind the tome.

He expected her to just cut him open. To call him a liar and feed him to the wolves that she threatened him with. Maybe even cook him up in the ovens as her meal. She did say she was hungry, didn’t she? But she doesn’t do any of those things.

She scoffs with a snort before a laugh bubbles out of her. And it doesn’t stop. Hunk risks peeking out from behind the book to see those animal teeth flashing. She looks...she’s not so scary when she’s laughing. And her laugh...it’s charming.

But when she stops laughing and stares him down with her golden eyes and wolfish smile he feels that nervous fear return. He feels like caught prey again as her hand reaches slowly forward, claws brushing his cheek. He closes his heyes but if he even flinches she’ll cut his face open.

“I’ve never heard such an amusing lie,” she breathes through her frightening grin.

Her claws trace down to his throat and hover there. Like she’s ready to rip his voice box out at the slightest provocation. When he swallows her claws move back so that she doesn’t scratch him.

“It would...only be a lie...if I didn’t come back,” Hunk whispers.

“If you got the chance to leave, why would you ever come back?” she frowns, her mouth curling back a little to snarl.

“I’d come back...to return your book...because it’s yours,” Hunk assures her.

“Or I could just kill you and my book won’t have to be returned because it never leaves!” she counters and just barely presses her claws against his side making him whimper with fear. “Give me one good reason I shouldn’t pull out your spleen and serve you up for the wildlife!”

“If you do that then--” he looks down at the book in her hand, “--I’ll never get the chance to read ‘Tales of the Earth Prince’.”

The beast blinks, her golden eyes wide with confusion at first and then perplexed before turning...contemplative. Gears turn behind those eyes as she scans and thinks. Her mouthful of teeth closes as her lip pouts out slightly. Her claws even retract slightly.

She’s...considering his words.

“Which is a shame...I bet you’ve read all sorts of great books…” he says, lowering the one protecting his face. “I could even bring you a new book...one of mine...as payment for letting me borrow this one?”

Her eyes light up though she tries to hide it.

The beast brings herself to her cloven feet but continues to stand over him. He doesn’t dare move yet as her eyes bore into him from above. She adjusts her rags tighter over her, layers upon layers of clothing to keep her warm despite the furry skin she sports. Still squinting at him, she reaches into a pocket, pulls a pair of spectacles and places them on her nose before pushing them in place.

“Hmm...every book in here is invaluable to me,” she tells him, her face very serious. “Like pieces of my very soul. They have no equal and thus I cannot ‘loan’ them out like they were common handkerchiefs. Not if I could not guarantee their safe return.”

“What if I left something here with you? Something I’d have to come back for?” Hunk suggests.

“Do you have a book with you?” she questions, eagerly eyeing down his form with sudden interest.

“No but…”

He slowly tries sitting up and she steps aside so that he can do so. Her eyes flit about the room and fall on the candelabra on the table. They narrow with annoyance and then fall back on Hunk as he pulls out a small box. She jerks her head with a nod, telling him to open it.

Inside are a number of small tools. Drivers, flat knives, and odd shaped pieces of metal. They’re all very small and she concludes they’re for fixing watches and other small appliances like children's toys.

“These are my livelihood, without them, I can’t work,” he says, his eyes falling on them. “They’re...the most valuable thing I own. Like part of my soul. Would they suffice?”

The beast shifts her gaze from his hopeful face to the tools. Worn with regular use but well taken care of. A craftsman’s tools are incredibly valuable to their user. Yes...this would be enough to hold him to his word.

She kneels, flips the lid closed and latches it before scooping it up and stuffing it into one of her many pockets.

“Get out of my home,” she huffs as she returns to the shadows. It’s only now that he realizes she has a cattle-like long tail peeking out from under her rags. “Only return when you’ve finished with my book. If it is damaged in any way...the cost will come out of your miserable hide.”

Hunk stares, still on his knees. It worked. He survived the beast and even--he looks down at the book in his hand. Not only did he find what he was looking for but he survived. Without a single injury other than the bruise from being tackled to the ground.

“What are you waiting for?! I said GET OUT!” she shouts loud enough to shake the books on the shelves.

“R-Right! Yes, milady! Th-Thank you! For your kindness!” he says giving her a bow and tripping over a chair as he makes a hasty exit.

Once she can’t hear his footsteps any longer she clutches the book closer to her chest. Kindness. A trade is not kindness. It is a mutual arrangement. He should learn the difference.

“How dare you bring him here,” she grumbles. “Did Shiro tell you to do this?”

The candles in the candelabra come to life, illuminating the table it sits on.

“Yes,” Keith answers.

“He forgets his place,” she frowns. “On the mantle and out of my business.”

“That’s not fair,” he says.

“And you forget your place as well, stable boy,” she hisses.

“He was just trying to help,” Keith says with a tired sigh. “He hates seeing you miserable.”

“What he hates...is being a broken down timepiece rusting away in this...this wretched prison!” she growls and kicks a chair, splintering the leg right off it.

Keith says nothing to that. It’s definitely how he feels about being a damned candle for twenty years. He fucking hates it. They all do. If there ever was an opportunity to reverse this curse, he’d certainly take it. And he can’t blame Shiro for making an attempt at curing them.

The boy, Hunk, had the same look in his eye as the Lady Kaitlin when she found out her mother was ill. Desperation mixed with compassion. She too scoured tomes after tomes for a remedy to no avail. Perhaps Shiro thought...she’d see it in him too. A kindred soul.

A match made for a fairytale ending.

“Dinner will be ready soon, milady!” calls a voice from the depths of the palace.

“Want me to light the way?” Keith asks as she turns.

She sighs and nods her head, taking him in hand. He provides for her more light as they go down the dark corridors and halls. She doesn’t have to carry him. Like many of her staff, they’re capable of moving themselves if they so desire. But it’s clunky and arduous and she simply doesn’t have the patience to wait for him.

When she reaches the receiving hall the meal cart is rolling to a stop at the bottom of the stairs.

“Would you like to take dinner in the dining hall this evening?” it asks.

“No. The Parlor. Like always,” she says.

“Yes, milady.”

“Shiro,” the beast huffs as she enters the parlor. She places the candelabra by the hearth and he goes about starting a fire as she collapses into her chair with the shredded cushion.

“Yes, Lady Holt,” he answers. The clock on the mantle above the fireplace doesn’t tick, only sits there. Made of black polished stone and metal.

“You know better than to call me that,” she grumbles. “I was never much of a lady even before growing fangs. Just call me Pidge...like you used to.”

“As you wish, Pidge,” he chuckles.

“You sent that fool into the Lion’s den,” Pidge says as she bites into her meal.

“Yes,” he admits.

“I might have killed him and Lance would be mopping up blood in my library,” she says.

“Awww gross, come on!”

“Lance, shut up.”

“You shut up,” Lance mumbles back.

“I’m glad you didn’t,” Shiro says. “Perhaps one day, Hunk will return your kindness--in ways you can scarce imagine.”

Pidge’s eyes soften as she looks down into her teacup. It’s so much smaller now than it used to be. While her change hasn’t made her unbearably larger, her hands look massive while holding things now. Even books that used to dwarf her tiny fingers now look miniscule in her claws.

And the man...he’d been scared of her. Of course, he was. But his compassion for his father, for someone other than himself, had been stronger than that fear. The way his voice trembled when he spoke of the desperate need for that book...she’d heard it before in her own voice once.

“You think he can break it? The curse?” Keith wonders.

“There’s no way to know for sure,” Shiro sighs.

“The parameters of the curse aren’t exactly...clear,” Allura adds.

“It could be as easy as falling in love and getting a kiss,” Lance says with a swooning sigh.

“Neither of those things is easy,” Keith huffs.

“Says you, I used to fall in love every week,” Lance says and Pidge can just imagine him shrugging as he leans casually on the doorframe. Instead, he’s just a mop, propped up in the corner. “Bat your eyes and pucker your lips. How hard could it be?”

“I imagine it’s a bit harder to fall in love with something that looks like this,” Pidge rolls her eyes as she stretches and sharpens her claws on the arms of the chair with a yawn.

Doesn’t matter, she thinks. It’s been twenty years and hasn’t aged a day. She’s tried every conceivable thing to break the curse. Made a ton of potions. Tried hundreds of rituals. Nothing ever works.

And nothing ever changes.

“Perhaps it would be easier if you weren’t roaring and hissing and ripping apart the furniture,” Shiro hints.

“And if you sat like a lady,” Allura adds.

“And maybe bathed more than once a month,” Lance snorts.

“ENOUGH!” Pidge shouts as she stands from her chair, her back rigid and claws out.

She hates when they talk like this. When they act like a solution is just around the corner. If it was as easy as sitting proper and bathing every two hours then she’d have changed back years ago. Acting like a person isn’t going to change any of them back.

No, she’s a beast now and nothing is ever going to change that.

“It doesn’t matter! There is no cure! This is life for us now!” she growls as she slashes the chair. “GET USED TO IT!” she roars and then storms off out of the room.

That night she locks herself in her quarters. Books in the bed and all over the floor. She throws herself into the pile on her bed and nests into the blankets with a tired sigh. Clutching as many to her chest as she can, she closes her eyes.

As long as she has her books...she can live like this. Reading the same stories over and over until she’s memorized every word. Restoring the old ones who’s bindings begin to wear away. Sleeping on the pages and waking with ink on her face. The way she used to when she was...normal.

She had accepted that that was how it was always going to be from now on. The same meals. The same books. The same scenery. The same...horns. Nothing ever changing. Forever. But now--

I could even bring you a new book...one of mine...

“A new book!” she squeals with excitement and kicks her hooves into the air.

If it’s any good she might consider a trade. A fair one since, obviously, she’d never just give one of her books away. It would have to be a book she’s already memorized but--She rolls with another excited noise and several books fall on the floor.

Maybe he’ll have one on sailing. Or one on astronomy. What if he has a romance novel? Or a science one? Oh hell! It could be a manual on building horse carriages as long as it’s one she’s never read before.

She pulls out the little box from her pocket and smiles.

In a few days, he’ll return is for his tools and repay her for the use of her book. After that, he’ll have no reason to come back. She frowns at that. Perhaps the book he took won’t be enough to cure his father’s ailment and he’ll have to borrow another. A horribly selfish hope to have, she knows, but they might work out a few extra trades in that case.

Supposing that is a possibility, tomorrow she’ll scour the shelves for medicinal books and journals. Like the ones she’d used for her own research into her mother’s illness. They never did end up helping the late duchess but maybe they won’t go to waste. They can be traded away for something new to read to make this existence a little more bearable.

And for the first time in two decades as the beast lays her head to sleep, she smiles. Maybe he’ll never break the curse she’s under but that doesn’t matter because for the first time she’s looking forward to what the next days will bring.

And looking forward to a very handsome visitor.

On average how much more would the cost be for insurance for a house with a pool?

We are thinking about buying a home in So Cal that is a 4 +2 house on a 10,000 sq ft lot. The house has a pool though, and our concern would be what the cost of insurance would be. When I started learning to drive at 17, I decided to buy my self a cheap car so that I'd be able to get more experience behind the wheel, pass my test quicker and have a car as soon as I passed my test. I was insured on my provisional license with an insurance company which specialised in learner drivers. However, I ended up getting 3 points on my license the week before I passed my test, in what I still think were pretty unfair circumstances. My house doesn't have a drive or a garage and so I had to park my car on the road in front of my house, or on a street round the corner when there were no spaces. As it was my first car I was really excited, and without understanding that I could get in trouble for it, I used to sometimes sit in my car and listen to music with my friends. The week before I passed my test we were sat chatting when a police car came down the road and pulled up behind us. Someone had broken into some allotments nearby and they were questioning us as to if we had seen anything. They searched my car- for tools that could suggest we had done it I presume, and when they found nothing they ran my license and obviously realised I only had a provisional license. I still at this point didn't realise I had done anything wrong, I wasn't driving the car, simply sat in it so I didn't realise I had committed an offence. The police informed me that because the engine was running, I could have been driving or about to drive and on that basis they convicted me for driving without a license. I only got 3 points and a 60 fine due to the fact I wasn't actually driving and at the time I accepted that with relief, I was terrified I'd get a ban or lose my license or get a massively unaffordable fine. I could have appealed but that would have meant going to court and I was only 17 and that terrified me. I declared the points to my insurance company straght away, but due to the nature of the offence my insurance was invalidated and void. I've only just now realised how serious having insurance voided in the past is. I'm supposed to be moving a 5 hours away in a few months for a job, and I have plenty of money saved for car insurance and a car, as without a car, the move is completely unrealistic. Without a car I won't be able to get to work as the hours are unsocial and my job isn't very well connected with public transport at all and so relying on public transport or taxis is simply not an option. I found a car, went to get an insurance quote, and found out that getting insurance is practically impossible when you've had insurance voided in the past. The points don't seem to be a problem, when I tell companies about my points but not about my insurance voided in the past they happily give me a quote. They're expensive, but affordable and it's what I was expecting. However, as soon as I tell them that my insurance was voided in the past they refuse to even give me a quote. I'm completely out of options and I don't know what to do. I need a car, but I can't get insurance as much as I try. I know I was in the wrong, but it seems like the voided insurance is more of a punishment than the points are and surely that isn't right? These Are The Days 6/9

One Sunday after church, Ronan finally talked to Declan about his plans. His older brother gave him a complicated stare. It was 1% incredulous, 1% disbelief and 98% pride. Ronan had trouble dealing with a proud Declan. For so many years the only emotions he inspired in Declan was disapproval and disgust. It was a sobering moment for Ronan, to see the genuine smile on the oldest Lynch’s face. More so when it echoed the smile Niall Lynch used to give his middle son. It reminded Ronan that Declan was as much as his father’s son as Ronan himself.

“I can help with the business plans and the licenses. But how are you going to separate the farm with this?” Declan made a motion to indicate the Barns and it’s many dream secrets.

Ronan brought out the schematic farm plan he had made with Adam’s help and spread it on the kitchen table. The Lynches property was vast and it gave plenty of space between the Barns and the proposed farm. Ronan and Adam had planned it so the farm would have its own access road, water source and electric line. The farm could operate independently without anyone coming close to the Barns. Declan gave him another smile and approving look.

“So you’ve been thinking about this seriously.” He remarked as he poured over the paper.

“Yeah, otherwise I wouldn’t bring it to you.” Ronan said with only half his usual barb.

Declan only hummed in response. Then he pulled out his phone and scroll through his contacts.

“I’ll start calling people on Monday. In the meantime, you need to set up a bank accounts and get in touch with an accountant.” Declan tapped some more. “There. I’ve sent you the numbers for the local bank and an accountant firm.”

“Okay.” Ronan grunted. His relationship with Declan was better, but it hadn’t reached a point where he can say ‘thank you’ without wanting to wash his mouth afterward.

When it was time to leave, Declan gripped both of Ronan’s shoulders. “I’m proud of you.” Then he kissed Ronan’s cheek and climb into his Volvo.

Ronan made a show of wiping his cheek, but once the car was out of sight, he gave in to the urge to grin. He used to think of his future in a somewhat abstract way, re-build Cabeswater, raise Opal, marry Adam. But now, he had a more concrete way of building up his future, shaping it into one he wanted and could have. It felt big, it felt significant, and he was ready for it.

Three months later, Ronan Niall Lynch was the proud owner of Lynch Farm. Declan must have pulled some strings to get all the licenses and permits issued so quickly. Ronan sent Adam a pic of Opal holding up the legal papers.

‘We might just survive if this brat can keep herself from eating the important looking papers.’

Adam’s reply was a pic of himself surrounded by piles of books.

‘I might just survive if these books can keep from eating me.’

Feeling mischievous, Ronan sent another pic of himself sticking his tongue out obscenely.

‘The question is, can you survive me eating you out?’

To which Adam sent a selfie of himself glaring at the camera, cheeks flushed, middle finger raised.

‘Fuck you Lynch. I’m blocking your number until I’m done with my tests.’

Two minutes later another text from Adam arrived.

‘And I would totally survived it. The question is, can you survive me swallowing you whole?’

Ronan had to groan and locked himself in the bathroom after that.

It took another month for Ronan to find a contractor to begin the construction of the farm. For the long term, Ronan had planned for several barns, hothouses and cabins. The cabins would eventually housed the workers, with one intended to be the office, although it would have a bedroom and a small kitchenette tucked in the back for his personal use.

For the first stage, Ronan had the contractor built the road and put up all the fences, but only built one barn, one hothouse and a cabin for himself. He would build the rest once he was more familiar with running a farm.

When everything was ready, Ronan went to buy the rest of what he needed to truly become a farmer. He bought packets of seeds, natural pesticides and fertilizers and the farm machines. He had his sight on a BCS two wheel tractor and it’s various implements. Once it arrived, Ronan took a picture of it and sent it to Adam.

‘My new Italian ride.’

‘What happened to the German one?’

‘I can’t fucking use her to till my farm Parrish.’

‘Is it a Lambo or a Porsche?’

‘It’s BCS you fucker.’

‘Huh. Bought it, or?’

‘Stole it from my fucking neighbor.’

‘Don’t turn me into your accomplice you asshole!’

‘Too late for that Parrish. They’ll know to pick you up if I get caught.’

‘Not if I turn you in first.’

‘Fucking traitor.’

‘Did you mean fucking tractor?’

Ronan laughed and sent Adam a pic of him shirtless, pushing the BCS.

‘I hope that’s not how you plan on doing your farming.’

‘Why not? Don’t tell me you’re jealous of my tractor?’

‘I’d like to see your Irish pale ass skin handle the sun Lynch.’

‘You like my Irish pale ass.’

Adam’s reply was a pic he took in front of the bathroom mirror. Adam was clearly just stepped out of the shower. His tan skin was gleaming with water and his towel was wrapped so low around his hips.

‘How do you like this?’

Ronan had to curse and scrambled back to his room for some privacy. He needed to appreciate the perfection that was Adam’s Parrish body, and he’d rather do it alone and behind locked door.

Three months later, Ronan overnighted a box full of his first harvests to Adam. He sent several heads of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. Two days later, he received a pic of Adam and his entryway buddies sitting around the common room. Each was holding a bowl of salad and a thumbs up.

‘Thx for the veggies. Do you think you can send us pumpkins and strawberries next?’

Ronan’s reply was a pic of him and Opal standing in front of a farmer market stall. There was a sign reading ‘Lynch Farm’ and several neat rows of vegetables off to the side.

‘We’ll see.’

For Adam and Ronan, there was one good thing about being in a long distance relationship. Though the separation was hard, it inadvertently cut their fighting time by a lot. Between Adam’s studies and jobs and Ronan’s farm, they didn’t really have much spare time, so whenever their free time aligned, Adam and Ronan spent it being as sappy as they could get away with, which was a lot. (Still, both vehemently denied of being a sap.)

They still bicker with each other, mostly through texts, but somehow it always ended up in shirtless pics being sent back and forth. Which led to sexting. Which led to either boy locking themselves in their room to relieve the tension.

Whenever they talk on the phone, it was always about hundreds other mundane things. They would talk about Opal or about the latest pic the Gansey trio sent them. They would gossip about Adam’s classmates and Ronan’s farmer market friends. They would commiserate over essays and the sudden shortage of manure in Henrietta. They would complain about nice customers and rude costumers. They would trade videos of their daily life. Adam waiting in line to get food at Annenberg Hall, sunrise as seen from the Barn’s rooftop, Adam doing a handstand, Ronan and Opal doing a handstand.

Some nights, they would Skype but have no conversation. Adam would study and got lost in his books, while Ronan finished his modules or re-reading his notes at the other end. They were too busy to talk, but it was nice to look up once in a while and saw your boyfriend’s face not one feet away though physically they were hundreds of miles away. It made the distance bearable.

There were days when one of them were too tired or too busy to even send a text, and that happened more often than both liked. Ronan hated those days. Those were the days where his doubts crept in and the ‘what ifs’ returned with vengeance. On those days, Ronan would take the BMW out and raced her on the backwater roads of Virginia. The older Aglionby boys knew better than to go against the charcoal gray car, and the newer ones who never even heard of Ronan Lynch’s name learned their lessons soon enough.

It was a good way of taking his mind off things. The adrenaline rush was enough to ease the restless energy thrumming under his skin and come morning light, all his doubts would seem silly. Especially when his phone had one message from Adam waiting to be opened. It was a pic of Adam in bed, wearing Ronan’s shirt, all sleepy eyed and mussed hair.

‘Thinking of you.’

Ronan saved the pic and started his day with a smile.

For Adam, days where he didn’t get in touch with Ronan in one way or another left him feeling guilty. It felt like he was forgetting Ronan or something. He knew it was irrational to feel that way, especially because they were two grown ups who built their relationship based on trust and mutual understanding.

The nights were the worst because that was when the dreams assaulted him. He often dreamed that wretched day where his hands wrapped around Ronan’s neck, robbing him of air, leaving bruises in their wake. He would wake up gasping, hands grasping the sheet so tight he almost ripped it.

Nights like those he was tempted to call Ronan even if it was three in the fucking morning. Most of the times, his finger was one tap away from making the call, but he always pushed down the urge. Ronan slept little enough as it was, Adam didn’t want to deprive him any further.

Instead, Adam would take off his clothes and wear one of Ronan’s shirt. He would take out the toy car and spin the wheels, letting the music filled his silent room. He would take out the photo album and looked at the smiling faces of his family. He would take out his phone and browse through the many pics Ronan sent him. It calmed him enough that he could finally drifted off to sleep.

When he woke up in the morning, he felt half better already. Then his phone pinged, signaling an incoming message. It was a selfie of Ronan and Opal. Opal was holding up a box of strawberries and they both were smiling ear to ear.

‘You fuckers are gonna love my strawberries.’

Adam laughed and forwarded only the pic to his group chat.

‘Strawberries are on their way.’

Adam prepared for class and he could already taste the strawberry on his tongue.
