You ever think about how the ceremonial duel was Atem's funeral, how it was the only one he ever got.
He had all the people he cared about around him, all the people he'd spent the previous years knowing and growing alongside and who he'd come to love. His best friends.
There was a game, duel monster, one of his favorites. It was a good game too, a tense one with everyone on the edge of their seat. And there were tears and smiles and laughter, there was the feeling of grief and joy in equal measure surrounding him.
And Yugi. Yugi was there. The person he'd shared a body and soul with, the person he was sure would always have a piece of him still there. A grounding precense during his shaky uncertainty in the puzzle. His partner, even now. The one and only Yugi Muto. His Yugi.
And Atem wouldn't want anyone else to lead him into the end.

tbh im really liking this duel so far, and its a shame because i've heard that ryuji and yugi's rivalry gets ironed out and the story moves on at some point but man he is such a good rival set up for yugi, they make a good parallel to yami and kaiba
#im sorry rivalshipping i love you two being rivals so much but. ryuji.#like ive seen people talk about this every once in a while but it is REALLY good#i like the whole fighting for the heir to the puzzle thing#and the fact that ryuji isnt connected to ancient egypt the way kaiba is#like ofc kaiba has a modern beef with yami and yugi#but they were still destined from ancient egypt to battle#so its a little different#i think if yugi was actually atems reincarnation (not possible but)#it could be set up with him and kaiba being the reincarnations and having that ancient beef#but the beef always seems to be specific to atem since his soul never reincarnated#so alas yugi is rival-cockblocked but at least he has ryuji to make kaiba jealous#sorry i cant not make this otp-y#devo speaks#screen caps#yugi mutou#ryuji otogi

Whar are your cocky Atems
(I almost misread this ask lol)
Here's a quick rundown on the calculating, messed up cocky Atems that live in my head! (I might have more, but these are the only ones I can remember from the top of my head)
1. Zorc!Atem - Used to be called Yoru, but I renamed him Meta a while ago. Featured in one of the earliest drawings I posted about 4 years ago(?), still thriving in my mind. I started drawing a comic for his origin a couple of years ago, but I only ever got to finishing the first page soooo... yeah 😅
2. Serial Killer!Atem - Straight from the most fleshed out clashshipping au I have! He's a practising psychiatrist who has a thing for mindgames and powerplay, and he's very successful in (both of) his profession(s). Kind of trying to write/rewrite this fic on and off.
3. Dark God!Atem - If you follow me, you probably have seen him before, but I never really clarified that he was a dark god XD. He basically inherited a portion of Zorc's power and is in a constant power struggle with a humanified and drastically weakened Zorc and his supporters.
4. Yakuza!Atem - This Atem is a bit of an odd one out because he is a lot more spontaneous and random. He lives in the moment and usually does whatever he considers most fun. He's a people's person and very amicable, and an extrovert (most of these Atem's are more on the introverted side and are the one's approached rather than the one who approaches).
5. Cat-Sith!Atem - Grade A asshole cat guy who isn't limited by the usual 9 transformations per total for regular cat-siths (he unapologetically flaunts it). He is probably the newest brain bug on the list lol.
Bonus: feral, chaotic, angry Atem
Damned King!Atem - Atem from the role swap au where he takes on the role of tkb. He was stolen from the palace after birth and swapped with a different baby (tkb). He is told of the swap by Zorc after the destruction of Kul Elna and is very bitter about it, believing that he was abandoned by his father and kingdom and is now on a quest for vengeance.

i finished the duel monsters dub for the first time ever last night (!!!) so i figured i oughta lock down my faces for the aibous... what a show, man
