"I look weird," Peter says. 

You bite your lip in surprise. Peter reaches for you like he might take your face into his hand, but you bow out of his touch. "No," you say, hissing at the sudden pain, "you look nice, you don't look weird." 

"A haircut was a bad idea. Now you're injured," he says with a laugh. 

You bring your hand away from your lip and find it unsullied. Peter wants to look anyhow, fighting you for a hand on your cheek. A couple of months ago you would've squirmed away from him, worried he'd feel the soft line of your jaw and drop his hand in disgust, but these days you let him do whatever he wants. 

"Pout at me," he demands. 

You, reluctant, poke your lip out. Peter has the gall to touch it with his thumb, seemingly unaware of the shiver it prompts. He smells like cherry gum today, a little wedge of it between his molars as he strokes your face and pushes you gently back into your chair. He's a sick individual, he doesn't even know what he's doing. Peter's joking and doting is done as your friend. 

"What inspired the haircut?" you ask. He hasn't gone too short with it since his first year of college, but the cute little flicks under his ears have been chopped. 

"Kept getting stuck in my hat." 

"What hat?" you ask. 

"My baseball cap." 

"Since when do you wear a baseball cap?" 

"Wouldn't you like to know," Peter croons, to the outrage of the women sitting across from you. They shush simultaneously, two pit vipers. 

You put your head down, sheepish. Peter rolls his desk chair closer to yours as he chuckles under his breath, to copy your notes no doubt, which is ridiculous. He's the smarter of the two of you. He speaks in mathematics like it's English, chemistry something innate. 

You knock your pencil into his hand, "Do your own work." 

"But you've already done it for me." Peter moves your hand aside, his naked arm rubbing up against yours, rigid cord against softer fat. "Thanks, beautiful." 

You roll your eyes at him but let him copy your work. After a few minutes you swear you can feel eyes on you, glancing up to find the pit vipers talking behind a laptop screen. They look at you at the same time and then quickly look away, spelling out for you what it is that's so interesting. People do this all the time, puzzling at you and Pete like it's insanity. The majority of people aren't as judgemental, but you can guess exactly what it is that they're thinking. Why is he spending his time with her? Handsome, muscled Peter and meek, chubby you. 

It's not the most important thing in your life, but it is a constant. Some people think fat is unlovable, and the rest love without qualm. Peter hasn't ever once been mean to you since he met you; your weight can't bother him. If anything, you'd think he quite likes the way you look. Peter's always calling you beautiful, pretty girl, telling you to get changed before you put other girls out. 

It's a shame he doesn't like you as anything more than a friend.

"I think those girls are looking at us," Peter whispers, pulling you toward him by the shoulder. It's not unlike him to touch you suddenly. "Is the haircut that bad?" 

"It looks nice, Pete!" you insist. 

He wraps his arm around your shoulder, rubbing his cheek against yours quickly. You choke through a laugh. "Daww," he says, "you're just saying that." 

He giggles as you push him away, "Get off me, you loon," you say. 

"You're the loon, loon," he says back. His cheeks are pinking. His sweater must be hotter than it looks.

"Can you just accept it, Peter? Your hair looks nice, you look great, stop worrying about what people think." You look away as you say it, startled by your own brazenness.

He gasps at you. "Hypocrite! You're the worst hypocrite ever, you're always worrying about what people think, and it's stupid because you're so pretty." He shakes his from side to side, eyes dramatically downcast. "Breaks my heart. A babe in denial." 

"Stop kidding around, we have too many assignments for this," you beg, tapping your pencil under the remaining questions you've yet to answer.

"A babe in denial and distress." 

You give up. He's overwhelmingly affectionate, homework sucks, and you're ashamed to know that if you flop down in defeat, he'll hug your arm. He always does. Diving into your space, Peter breathes cool cherry at your cheek as he says, "You know I'm gonna explain them to you until you get them, sweetheart. Don't stress." 

You put yourself in this position, but his closeness has your heart skipping. "I'm not stressed." 

"You're too cute to stress." 

"Pete…" 

"Sorry, I'll stop, I'm stopping. Pass your notebook, I'll fix your equation." 

You pass him your notebook without looking up. You need a few seconds to collect yourself. "Thank you, Peter." 

He sounds dangerously fond, the kind of tone that feeds your delusion, as though he could like you as you like him, "You're welcome."

oh man. this will not be a popular answer but. garrus? that is, me1 garrus did not impress mercy overmuch. his too easy slide to brutality, the willingness to abuse the weight of a badge and desire to wield power without interference, that grated at mercy. they thought they’d gotten through to garrus after arresting dr saleon, that the job wasn’t to punish the guilty but protect the innocent. mercy is also a firm believer in punishment less permanent than death (also anti private prisons and believes in rehabilitation. i mean. they were given a second chance). mercy n garrus had a really good conversation after and they were hopeful in his direction. when archangel is revealed to be garrus mercy actually starts laughing they’re so mad. although throughout me2 garrus eventually tells em about all the things he went through to end up at omega, and they find sturdier footing. by 3 mercy is genuinely proud at the guy garrus has become, and trusts he’s got their six, but i wouldn’t say he is “inner circle”

mercy holds liara at arm’s distance. unfortunately they went to noveria to see benezia first, so by the time the reach therum, liara’s gone a bit delirious from dehydration/isolation. she might’ve latched on a little too hard with the mind meld. it’s not an addiction, but she definitely has a craving for the commander’s mindspace with its deep sturdy roots, cool clear water and warm golden light. mercy’s like a reoccurring acid flashback for liara, of texture and euphoria. she fixates on them, i guess, as a reeeeeeeally unhealthy coping mechanism for the trauma of both the geth attack and the loss of her mother. mercy looks at her and thinks ah. baby. like they do for tali grunt and jack. as a professional blackmailer, mercy has to clap at the graduation to shadow broker and appreciates how she can swing weight around, but they do worry over liara. she’s. hm. watches mercy too much still sometimes. they hit the roof when liara says she gave their body to cerberus

24. Who does Shepard turn to for advice? For comfort? Who do they like to gossip with

advice: they talk to anderson a lot. he did, after all, have a tremendous impact on their young adult life. mercy was in the middle of leaving him a video message when the thresher maws hit akuze. they don’t chat as often now, but do email pretty regularly. mercy also goes to chakwas to pace and bitch in her office and be fed good whiskey. they also end up talking out a fair bit of things w vega during boxing practice. mordin, too. he’s one of the few that doesn’t get worn down by the billions of questions mercy usually asks a person

comfort: thane, wrex and edi. all of them are really good at reading what mercy needs, be it companionable silence or explosions

they like to gossip with everyone. honestly gossip might be their love language. but! samara is an endless delight. she knows so much. the two of em hang out a lot. sometimes samara will drop a bomb on mercy while they’re practicing acroyoga together just to watch how they handle it. miranda, after mercy helps her protect oriana without blinking, becomes a fantastic contributor too. that’s why her hair is so big. it’s full of secrets. tali, joker and jack are regulars too :)

34. Got any tattoos?

Yes, actually! ‘round sixteen years old, they shelled out for fancy-ass holographic shifting ink. depending the light and brightness the colors shift and change, so sometimes the tattoos are very subtle, sometimes flashy. starts at the notch of the jaw, down the sides of the throat, over the shoulder, down the arm, to end at the forearms

the tattoos aren’t colored in, just the lineart, so at first glance it just looks like a pattern

art by walter anderson, since mercy spent some time in the area. and later, their foster moms lived right on the bayou—and mercy would sit on the deck, watching alligators and pelicans watch em back. the most peaceful time of their childhood.

they lose the tattoos in me2, of course. im not sure yet if the design replaced, or gets something new. i think it’s be in gold ink tho

Omg, Kaisa!!! The season finale was a RIDE. Are you okay???? Because Lumax nearly destroyed me. Caleb’s performance in the final episode was off the charts (Sadie obviously was brilliant as usual but Caleb’s guttural wailing compromised me). Just wanted to check in my with fave Lumax shipper to make sure you’re okay and see how you’re holding up. That scene where they were writing notes was so cute I wanted to dieeeeee. I can’t wait to see all the content you’re inspired to make from their incredible and heartbreaking season!

And omg it truly was! It was so great but I truly felt like I'd been ran over by a truck when it was all over. And yeah, you guessed right, they really did destroy me! When I asked for more screen time for them post s3, this is not exactly what I had in mind! But they really were incredible this season, despite all the sadness, I'm so happy they got to have proper focus and a more mature, serious storyline after they were just used for comedy in s3. And to find some silver lining in all the heartbreak of the ending, it really truly solidified their endgame status in the canon. After something like that, there's no way that they won't end the series together. And that knowledge of the long-term is what will keep me going through the uncertainty for now.

And you're so right! Caleb absolutely floored me with his performance! Both of them did an amazing job but it was especially great to see him get to show his acting skills in a big way like that, since he hasn't really gotten emotional material like that before. I honestly don't know how Sadie managed to not react in that scene, if I saw my friend I've known for ages deliver that heartbreaking of a performance, I would've burst into tears right there and then. He deserves all the awards and recognition!

And yes the note writing scene! It was just so sweet and amazing and they truly have such great on-screen chemistry! They weren't even speaking and still delivered such a heartwarming and adorable performance! That scene was also really great at showcasing that even though they, and all of the party, have gone through horrible terrible things, they're also still just kids. Their bashful smiles and little smiley faces and stick figure drawings really brought that home, and made such a stark contrast to the absolute heartbreak later in the episode.

Lol it's bullshit. Of course it's bullshit. It's not even worth debating because it's such a waste of time and such a reductive opinion grounded in bad media analysis and bad philosophy. If you hear the word 'toxic' you need to stage exit the conversation, it's a red flag.

Sure, women consuming the wrong fiction will make them get into abusive relationships, I love the victim blaming here. Or attributing abuse in real life relationships being a result of fiction? Yeah, I am sure that is going to fly in sincere debates surrounding intimate partner violence (IPV). I can guaratee you if you read any surrounding literature about IPV or DV, the focus is not going to be on who likes Kylo Ren too much or reads the wrong type of romance.

Even then, I don't think Knightfall is a) a crackship - it most certainly isn't, thank you, it's very narratively justified, and one of Jaune's biggest moments in the show, well two of them, are with her, or b) something bad or toxic at all, in fact thematically motivating the relationship (in canon) would be healing, forgiveness, and compassion, and fundamentally uplifting the notion of nonviolence. So Knightfall isn't even anything textually 'problematic'.

If it were textually problematic I would still dismiss the notion it would have a serious impact on real-life relationships - though trying to draw some type of actual casual impact is extremely difficult, because the kinds of things influencing real life harm is actually multi-modal. If you care about that thing, sincerely and truly, which to be quite frank people obsessed with toxicity in fiction don't care. Motivating a lot of this is just cloaked ship wars, or 'me not like this and it hurts my fee-fees'. Or deep, profound resentment for the art and structure of narrative and metaphor.

The reality is that tonally R/WBY is fantastical and it is romantic. A character like Cinder Fall killing Pyrrha Nikos isn't just flatly about killing, it's also conveying lots of different ideas:

the inevitability of change and growth (ooh! Autumnal theming!), the violence of change, the complete unseating she symbolically represents in the story [for the characters to grow], the death of childhood, the complicated morality of an expanding worldview as you come to see adults as people/the world beyond black and white/understand what made Cinder do it

and if you flatly define that as 'Cinder Fall big bad meanie who need dieeeeee' then your analysis bad too. But the irony here is that people who say ships like Knightfall are toxic are people fundamentally not interested in a) metaphor and the relationship we have to stories emotionally, b) actual compassion and transformation and healing, c) actual harm in the real world, especially when they go out of their way to hurt real people over fiction. You don't know the shit I've seen in the Reylo fandom (and yes, Reylo is a feminine-driven narrative, Rey was on the Heroine's Journey (most prominently in TLJ), though Reylo and Knightfall aren't necessarily tonally 1:1). I mean it was really shocking and so bad I don't want to talk about it, and people used Reylo as a cover to harass Jewish Reylo fans - calling them N*zi apologists!, Black Reylo fans, female and trans fans, and I saw some really shocking stuff. Again and again and again. By the time we hit the pressure point of TROS I saw one of the most offensive opinions about Kylo Ren expressed and retweeted on Twitter, which I advise you to skip the rest of this paragraph if you are in a sensitive space mentally: a user suggested that actually, if Kylo Ren's evil is analogous to mental illness, sometimes mentally ill people really do need to kill themselves because they're beyond help. Tell me: how is Kylo Ren being naughty worse than that? It fucked me up and still fucks me up, not just because of that but because of other things I have experienced.

So just ignore their framework and their approach. It's not about harm and it's not about protecting people or caring about what sort of relationships ought to be depicted in media. It's using false concern to load their argument and make it impossible to debate because you might concede territory to the idea that toxicity is okay. It's literally impossible to ever hold a conversation and I can guarantee you that 99% of people I've encountered with that opinion are 100% disinterested in hearing anything to challenge the notion of 'toxicity' because it's not about that - it's about ship and story taste. And nihilistic storytelling. Because stories are stupid and metaphors are also stupid.

Lol this isn't even what it would be, but they're automatically trying to say it will be because they can't conceive of Cinder as an active character in the story because a) big mean baddie and b) stupid woman, really showing their hand there about how they conceive of female characters. Jaune helping Cinder, when everybody else has completely failed her, is profoundly meaningful, and Cinder being able to act on her own terms is profoundly empowering considering her enslavement.

But anybody trying to convince you that community is weak and we shouldn't help each other and we can't be uplifted through connection either has an ulterior motive or is somebody who has bought into deeply cynical thinking, which is probably more hurtful than anything Cinder could do.

For some context, I am a TFA-era Reylo. I have seen it all. People who say Knightfall is toxic etc. (which I honestly haven't even seen because I know how to curate my fandom experience - just avoid stuff you don't like if you dislike Knightfall) are like little babies. Watch this

The way I personally deal with it is actually just to recognise you're never really having the argument you think that you're having. If you're somebody who takes IPV and the depiction of women in media really seriously, and you are interested in the way we resonate with narrative and want to discuss what it means for people to identify with villains, and if you enjoy discussing things seriously and trying to hear the other side out, you are having the wrong conversation and your 'ummmm this ship is toxic!!!' interlocutor does not care.

Yes, I'll allow there's probably some actual anxiety and projection into 'problematic media' that is actually about earnest concern - that displacement isn't controversial. But I would say that this doesn't make up the majority of the crowd. They're not interested in peer-reviewed sources, they're not interested in the kinds of 'problematic' stories which have been a part of storytelling for all of human history - and they deny humanist universalism and connection through stories as well, for dealing with complicated experiences, they're not interested in seriously debating the topic. It is the fandom age-old story of ship wars, and what kind of story someone is expecting, and this is especially apparent now with the rise of corporate storytelling. An easy story with cynical self-awareness, good vs. bad, kill bad guy. Make sure to insert a joke in there just in case you are getting too emotionally sincere.

But that doesn't matter. It doesn't mean anything to those people. Don't bother. Find your bliss instead. That goes for people who don't like Knightfall: maybe stop trying to destroy things and ask for other people to do the dirty work of making 'pure' media, and try to create things yourself.

You know why those 'pure' fandoms scare off creators and pretty much have dead fandoms? Because this kind of anodyne narrative analysis is actually creatively deadening. It's boring. Once you overthink your story this way it's impossible to write for. It's much more freeing to work in service to narrative, not in service to perceived political good... which for that matter, is a total separate tin of worms, which once you open up is extremely dangerous. If a story must be 'politically good' in order to allow to be told, I can guarantee you it will be used by the powers that be, not to tell empowering stories.

None of this is to say that I don't seriously think about the way social attitudes imprint themselves on fiction. The argument here is that social attitudes imprinted on fiction are as harmful, or as concerning as harm in real life, and must be wholly avoided. I am very comfortable reading stories which contain misogyny; I can recognise it's wrong, and part of my critical analysis enables me to use my groan up girl brain to identify whether it's something being used by the story to further its themes or whether the author is a fuckwit. I like to think that many others are just the same.

But Knightfall's not even like that lol. If anything it's empowering. To me I find the story of the deeply wounded villainess who comes into her own feminine power and redeems it through someone reaching out to her with uncompromising and literally magical compassion like, um, very compelling. Narratively the only person who can forgive Cinder is Jaune. That's why it's fun. It's not about fighting what you hate, but saving what you love.

Also, if the deep wound of the story is Ozlem, Jaune and Cinder - two characters in an ensemble cast, yes - coming together and proving you could work back from Ozlem as enemies back to lovers is... everything. That's not just emotionally moving, that's actually seriously saying something.

Although to me, the idea that you can still come back from something, and fix it, and you're not too far gone, and you can change, and you can open your heart, and you could decide not to choose violence today, and you could have a home, and you could be free, and you could take on responsibility you're prepared for, is very moving. See? It's not about toxicity. In my opinion, it's a resistance to vulnerability. Bad characters who change and recognise badness in themselves are scary.

I stopped and composed myself so I could make some sense when I tell you that I love TPC so much, the whole Happily Ever After series is cannon in my head. I remember back in the summer when you said that you had all these ideas about their kids and I was amazed by all the ideas. The Royal Family edit was so fun to make with you and it’s amazing how I can ACTUALLY see these babies grow up to be the adults you picked. I was thinking earlier about when they both probably started to realize they were falling in love with the other only to realize it probably happened in the same 24 hour time frame for both of them 😂 Not to say that there weren’t subtly flirty exchanges and glances and touches that lasted just a little too long prior to these moments for them, but these were their ‘italicized oh’ moments.

They both happen the night after Lorenzo injures Jack, and Edward takes Jack home and ends up staying to keep him company and make sure he’s okay while he comes down from the meds they gave him. Later in the evening, they settle in Jack’s study; one of the few rooms in the house he can tolerate when he’s in such a state. 

The bit leading up to Edward’s Oh moment has actually been written as a snipet already - it can be found here if you want to read it proper. But after everything that had happened that day, and after witnessing Jack at probably his lowest, Edward’s still warmed when the doctor finds it in him to clarify that he doesn’t expect Edward to wear any of the things that cover his burns up when it’s just the two of them - but only if he’s comfortable that way around Jack. It takes a few minutes for it to sink in, but it’s not long before Edward sheds his sleeves and gloves and his hat and his eyepatch and gets truly comfy.

And it’s when he settles back onto the chaise with his book and catches Jack smiling at him warmly - looking downright relieved to see that Edward felt comfortable enough around him to be so vulnerable with his most glaring insecurity. “That looks more comfortable.”

Seeing that smile on Jack’s face at seeing him that way for the first time is what does it 😂

Jack’s moment comes later that night - at an ungodly hour, as he’s nodding in and out of sleep, and a flash of a nightmare jolts him awake with a gasp - a sound that’s enough to wake Edward from a light sleep as well. He asks Jack if he’s okay, and waits a good ten-fifteen minutes, and they talk quietly in the silence - Edward making casual inquiries that strangely seemed to help to center the doctor again - before lying back down.

He’s not sure anyone’s ever shown so much concern for him since he was at least a teenager - not sincere concern, anyway - and he thinks back on the day’s events and feels a swell of emotion in his chest and tears stinging at his eyes. Feelings of gratitude he wasn’t sure he deserved to be feeling, and something else - something he hadn’t felt in a good ten years or so; a sense of warmth and admiration and fondness as he watched Edward doze back off.

He scoffs at himself - here I go again, falling for anyone who shows me some human decency. But deep down, he knows this time, with Edward, it feels different - this time it feels sincere. And god, he hopes it is.

Even if you're not familiar with norse myths I'd say that the Gaiman book is still really enjoyable 😊It's not too heavy and a lot of the stories he chooses are the more well known ones. It's only about 300 pages, so it's not too long either. I think you can get a preview of a few pages through google, so that might be a good way to see if it's something you'd like or not. - CC 🦊

A lot of the Doctor Who books feel like they could be their own little episode, which is nice. It's been a few years since I read them but I remember enjoying The Stone Rose, The Stealers of Dreams, Invaders from Mars and The Glamour Chase. There's also a huge range of audiobooks where the actors have returned to their old roles. Recently this year it was announced that Christopher Eccleston was coming back to work on some Ninth Doctor audiobooks 😱- CC 🦊

Also, if you're interested in any of the older Doctors, I'd highly suggest looking into Eighth Doctor audiobooks! The actor sadly only got one really odd 90's movie and a short for the 50th to act the role on film, so the audiobooks really let the character shine and give him a chance. And some sci-fi I can recommend are Aurora Rising, There Will Come Soft Rains, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. There's also Jurassic Park but is it sci-fi? Is it horror? I looked at the preview for Norse Mythology and it actually sounds so interesting!!
