Easy rider
Normally trying to ride a bike in sand is like trying to wade through shin-deep mud. Not on Hilton Head's South Forest Beach, where the tide's ebb and flow has created a surface so densely packed that bike tires barely leave a mark.
Beyond that, the entire island is easy riding because it's as flat as a basketball court. They call HH and the surrounding area “the low country" with good reason: The highest point on the island is a mere 10 feet above sea level.
A single gear is all you'll ever need.

NBA star Kyrie Irving, Tyler Perry, Fantasia, and other Black celebrities are helping a 93-year-old South Carolina woman who is fighting to keep her land in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
For nearly 30 years, Josephine Wright has lived at her Hilton head property, a 1.8-acre piece of land that's belonged to her family since shortly after the Civil War, per the Atlanta Black Star.
A GoFundMe account was started by Wright's granddaughter, Charise Graves, as developers are now threatening to take her land. Wright is facing a lawsuit over property line issues filed by Bailey Point Investment LLC, a development company constructing a 147-unit neighborhood that would intrude on her land.
Wright’s family believes the lawsuit is intended to coerce her into selling her home, and they are raising money to combat the legal fees. The family started with an initial goal of raising $250,000 but with the help of Irving, who donated $40,000, it's been raised to $350,000.
Perry also spoke out about Wright's situation, saying she "has a village behind her." His public statements sparked more support from the likes of Fantasia, actress Gabrielle Dennis, former Food Network star Gina Neely, gospel singer Tina Campbell, and rapper Meek Mill.
Irving still holds the largest donation to the GoFundMe. As of Tuesday (July 18), over $245,000 had been raised.

Reflections
I guess I don't have to tell you that i'm having a blast with my new camera down here in the Low Country.
The lush flora and fascinating fauna of this barrier island make it a picture-taker's paradise - especially in contrast to the shades of gray that dominated the Michigan landscape when we fled in late January.
It's a joy to roam the island taking pictures, then slide the camera's SD card into my laptop to rediscover what's there.
In these three photos we have one heron, three turtles and one alligator ... plus their reflections.

1663 Island surveyed by William Hilton, an English sea captain, sailing from Barbados in search of tropical lands on which to establish profitable English plantations.... becoming “Hilton's Headland” as it was written about in Capt. Hilton’s journal.
1698: John Bayley of Ireland took title to 16,200 acres. 24 years later his son appointed Alexander Trench, to be the first real estate agent. The Island was referred to as Trench's Island.
Early 1700s: Enslaved West Africans begin being brought to the Georgia and South Carolina sea islands, including Hilton Head Island, to tend the rice and cotton fields.
1730-39: About 20,000 enslaved Africans are brought to South Carolina
1740: Indigo introduced on the Island. Cultivated and tended by the growing population of enslaved Africans, the indigo bricks became an important export sold to the English for dye
1790: The first successful crop of long-staple or Sea Island cotton is grown at Myrtle Bank Plantation, now known as Dolphin Head in Hilton Head Plantation
