I feel like putting Hattie McDaniel anywhere near the shadow realm when she didn't even get to compete in the tournament at all offends every strand of my being. She is an icon and is above all of this.
These are ALL the Black female Oscar winners. Ever. So happy for them, but this is so few Black actresses. Hattie McDaniel, the first Black Oscar winner, won in 1940. Ariana DeBose won most recently in 2022. In 80 years, only ten Black actresses have won Oscars and only one of those women, Halle Berry, won Best Actress?

This week in 2006, the USPS released the stamp honoring Hattie McDaniel in the dress she wore in 1940 when she became the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award.
