#NayaRivera was born on January 12, 1987. Today she would've turned 34. Unfortunately, on July 8th, 2020, she drowned while trying to save her 4 year old son. We all know her as the "Queen Bitch" #SantanaLopez on #Glee but we actually grew up with her and didn't know it. Naya was an #American actress, singer and model. She was of #AfricanAmerican #German and #PuertoRican descent. When the term #AfroLatinx became widespread in the 2010s she was often identified as such. Her maternal grandmother was Clara White, an abortion counselor and figure in the #civilrightsmovement who was involved in the March on Washington, Selma to Montgomery marches, the 1968 Chicago riots, and organized protests. She began her career as a child actress and model, appearing in national television commercials before landing the role of Hillary Winston on the short-lived CBS sitcom The Royal Family (1991–1992) at the age of 4 and earning a nomination for a Young Artist Award at 5. She even met #TupacShakur; he was a fan of her acting and introduced himself after spotting her family at LAX. After a series of recurring tv roles and then guest spots as a teenager, she got her breakthrough role in 2009 on Glee (2009–2015). For the role, she received critical acclaim and various awards, including a #SAG Award, an #ALMA Award, as well as earning 2 #Grammy Award and #BritAward nominations. She released a single, "Sorry", in 2013. She won 2 ALMA Awards as a music artist. On the big screen, she made her debut in the horror film At the Devil's Door (2014) and a supporting role in the comedy Mad Families (2017). Besides performing, she championed various charitable causes, particularly for #LGBT rights, #immigrants' rights, and #womensrights. She also spoke out against #racism, especially in entertainment. In 2016 she published a memoir titled Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up. Because of her varied roles across 3 decades as a performer, Naya is seen as having been a vanguard of #AfroLatino and #queer representation on television.
