Not the first time Kanon Nonomura plays a “bad” girl character. I remember her playing similar role in Takane no Hana san, acting alongside Rika Izumi as her love rival. Hope she doesn’t get “hated” in real life for the characters she play.

JDramas and their fascination with adults and minors(?)
TW: Grooming and Adult-Minor relationship
Jdramas are funny with the amount of dramas about an adult/minor relationship. Whether it’s teacher-student of not. I get that probably a huge chunk of them are adaptations of mangas.
But I can’t help but laugh at how many dramas are still going on that romanticise this as oppose to addressing the things. Maybe it has to do with how its perceived in Japan.
Like take this example:
So I decided to watch Takane and Hana because I was curious by the plot synopsis and how it addresses the issue.
This is the plot from MDL:
“ After her older sister refuses to go to an arranged marriage meeting with Takane Saibara, the heir to a vast business fortune, high schooler Hana Nonomura agrees to be her stand-in to save face for the family. But what happens when Hana meets Takane is an unexpected pairing of utter opposites! “
Now. I don’t know what I was fully expecting. To be honest, I thought it would be, at least for a good chunk of the series about Hana, the high schooler having to pretend to be an adult and “deceive” the rich guy to avoid getting her father and family into trouble. I don’t know. I was expecting more of a comedy like she wants nothing to do with him but has to pretend she he believes she’s her sister.
What I got instead? The reveal happened within the first half of the first episode (unexpected). And in the original meeting they hated each other (expected). His response? Go to her school and shower her with flowers.
There was then a bit where the sister whose vain, dumps her boyfriend and decides she wants to be in the arranged marriage with Takane and her family agrees since she’s the original one (an adult) and the “pretty” sister. So then I thought it was gonna develop into Hana feeling unwanted by her family and Takane and the sister in the arranged marriage agreement but Takane not wanting it but trapped. What we get is Takane refusing the sister and insisting the arrangement is with Hana.
So it becomes this weird thing where you have an adult actively pursuing a high schooler (though they try to play the narrative at times that he’s just doing it to get him to “submit” to the lavish lifestyle she despises. The you have his friends, her friends and HER parents all being chill about the whole thing and encouraging this relationship.
It’s all very wtf and not what I fully expected.
I think from what people said about the Manga is that the relationship is more friendship and feelings (at least on Takane’s side) don’t develop until she’s older or near the end of the manga. And that cause the series is only 8 episodes and 25 mins each - the last arc is crammed severely. Whereas the TV series has them kissing in episode 1 or episode 2 (not a “real” in love kiss) and the series portrays them having feelings early on but both react differently to having feelings.
As a whole, I liked the start of it, it was fast paced, but I got bored around the midway point and the development was rushed. I don’t mind watching series about student-teacher relationships since they are problematic and it’s my first time watching an adult-minor relationship. But it did leave me icky how there was no real opposition to them because of this everyone was rooting for them. The series just wasn’t strong enough for me to forget my morals and enjoy the fictional drama cause I got bored easily.
At least with TWDrama, Lessons in Love - it addressed the themes, they had opposition. And even though the relationship was romanticised, they had moments where you could see the power imbalance between the teacher-student and the level of grooming when they first hook up (which stops on the student’s side because he felt uncomfortable and the teacher was clearly doing it at revenge at his mother). They had strong opposition from adults (and some students). It also turned into a revenge drama and thriller later on. And while it still had some issues, the teacher’s best friend who is the school nurse encouraging her to hook up with the student and of course the happy ending for the relationship. You can abandon your morals for the sake of a fictional drama because it was quite solid and it addressed other themes like social class, wealth, rich/poor, the influence of parents on a child’s education (and the influence of a rich parent on their child’s education.

Cốt truyện
Cốt truyện Takane To Hana được nhận định mang tính giải trí cực kỳ cao. Bởi trong từng trang truyện, tác giả đã cố tình làm cho người xem phải cười tức bụng với những màn thù địch không ngừng của Takane và Hana. Điều khiến bộ truyện này trở nên hài hước là rõ ràng Hana và Takane đang cố gắng tránh xa nhau, tránh mặt nhau càng nhiều càng tốt nhưng có điều gì đó khiến họ quay trở lại với nhau!
Nhân vật
Đầu tiên, phải nói rằng cả Takane và Hana đều là những nhân vật có tính cách mạnh mẽ và xung đột, nhưng cũng giống nhau và đó là điều khiến “phản ứng hóa học” trong họ tương tác với nhau rất tốt. Khi câu chuyện tiến triển, chúng ta bắt đầu thấy Takane không phải là người vô tâm mà anh ấy dường như là chàng trai tình cảm khi chứng kiến những khoảnh khắc nhỏ trong suốt các buổi đi chơi của họ. Còn Hana nhận thấy những bước tiến của Takane để nỗ lực trở thành một người đẹp hơn và sẵn sàng thử những điều mới. Takane và Hana đã khiến cho người xem nhận ra được một tình yêu không thể chịu đựng được nhau mà phải thầm yêu nhau.
Tất cả các nhân vật phụ đều được phát triển thực sự tốt và mang lại nhiều sự hài hước. Từ những người bạn của Hana, Hikaruko, Mizuki, chị gái Yukari, ông của Takane và một trong những bạn học của Hana, những người dường như sẽ trở thành một nhân vật quan trọng hơn trong các tập sau.
Hình ảnh
Đối với thể loại truyện tranh thì hình ảnh chính là “trái tim”. Hình ảnh trong Takane To Hana được Yuki Shiwasu minh hoạ rất biểu cảm và chi tiết đến từng nhân vật. Chưa hết, cách vẽ chi tiết của cảnh nền cũng rất thu hút. Qua tài vẽ của tác giả, chúng ta thấy được hình ảnh Hana khá trưởng thành và tự lập cho dù cô ấy có rơi vào hoàn cảnh nào đi chăng nữa. News-W ngưỡng mộ điều đó ở cô ấy, cô ấy chỉ biết lăn xả với bất cứ thứ gì cuộc sống ban tặng. Còn nhân vật của Takane rất hài hước, vì vậy nhiệm vụ của anh ta là làm phiền Hana. Tuy nhiên, anh ấy rất lúng túng khi điều khiển thế giới của tầng lớp trung lưu, một nền văn hóa khác với nền văn hóa của anh ấy.
