Between Shinbei, Gensai, Hanjiro, and Izo, who was the most skilled in scowrdmanshio between the four?

That's a really difficult question to answer.

Each of these men were skilled swordsmen in their own right, and outside of seeing them go up against one another, it's a difficult judgment to make.

Nakamura Hanjiro lost a finger (or several fingers, sources seem unsure here) prior to the battle of Ueno when he was attacked by three assassins on his way back from a bath house. He still drew his short sword and killed the last assassin, then went on to fight for the rest of the Boshin War and in the Satsuma Rebellion.

If I had to pick one, I would probably say Tanaka Shinbei.

Here's why: Shinbei was not born a samurai and his sword school, as far as I know, is unknown. He may have been mostly self-taught, but he still caught Takechi Hanpeita's eye.

Takechi was a strong swordsman himself, most likely better than Okada Izo, who was his student and 9 years younger. If Takechi wanted Shinbei to work for him, he saw a lot of talent that would be useful. He wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

But I'll leave it up to the readers. Who do you think was the most skilled of the four?

シネマ・ロサで市子観る。（2024年1月29日の午後）

①エビドリアを喰らいながらも。

タカセでエビドリアを食べながら、もうすぐ市子の時間であることを考えている。大好物のエビドリアの味も曖昧にシネマ・ロサへの道について考える。一緒に頼んだコーヒーフロートを、ちょびちょび飲めば間に合わない、一気に飲めば間に合う、と考えて、5吸いで飲み切る。エビドリアもコーヒーフロートもうまかった。が、気持ちはもうシネマ・ロサ。

②ウイロード（雑司が谷隧道）へ向かう。

若い時はP'PARCOに足繁く通ったが、今はもう入ることもない。P'PARCOは1994年にオープン、今年で30周年だそう（けっこう古い）。Swimmer、大中、タワレコによく行っていた。

代官山のSwimmer、原宿の大中、文化屋雑貨店、HANJIRO（古着屋）、表参道沿いのCHICAGO、池袋のヴァージンメガストア… あたいの青春はもうない。

（追記：中目黒に量り売りの古着屋さんあったよねぇー。よく行った。）

あたいの青春はもう無いけど、今のわたくしには、食べて観て読んで作る、がある。なにより〝自信〟がある。主体性なく振り回されて生きていた青春時代よりもはるかに今は居心地が良い。（戻りたいのは体力と視力と健康診断で言われることくらいか。）

ちょっと立ち止まって、新文芸坐のスケジュールを確認し��いと思ったけど、もう時間がない。市子へまっしぐら。

③北口に到着。

珈琲伯爵を仰ぎ見、ナポリタンを思い浮かべ、キッチンチェックのメニューボードを見てハンバーグを思い浮かべる。思うだけの時間も大事。シネマ・ロサはもうすぐ。

映画館のポスターの前で、どうしよう、と考える迷いはない。作品に取り憑かれた亡霊さながら、静かに入口に吸い込まれる。公開から1ヶ月も過ぎると、上映回数が2回1回と減らされ、朝、レイトと時間もずらされて、最新作の影でひっそりと上映を終える。そんな頃に現れる、亡霊の如き低体温の人（リピーター）たち。最小の動作で現れ、最小の動作で去っていく。しかし、作品の愛で満ちたあたたかい心の持ち主なんです。

④市子。

スクーターに乗る長谷川の背中、プロポーズのはにかみ顔、市子の涙、アイス棒を見やすいように扇状に持つ北（北の学生時代のキャラ設定がとてもよい）、焼きそばの食べ方…一場面一場面、大切に観る。同じ映画（劇映画）を3回もスクリーンで観ることなど、今までに一度もない。丸めて懐に入れて持ち歩きたい、愛おしい映画。

海辺の場面。「おかあちゃん、長谷川来てくれてよかったなあ」 と胸の内でつぶやく。長谷川、来てくれてよかった。母親はたぶんもう老ける一方だと思うが、安心したことだろう。（月子のことがまだあるけど。）

✝️Origens✝️

A Igreja, que na sua essência é missionária, teve um grande impulso do Espírito Santo para evangelizar a América e o Oriente no século XV e XVI. No Oriente, São Francisco Xavier destacou-se com uma santidade que o levou à ousadia de fundar várias missões, a ponto de ser conhecido como “São Paulo do Oriente”. Francisco Xavier nasceu no castelo de Xavier, em Navarra, norte da Espanha, em 7 de abril de 1506. De família nobre, seu pai era presidente do Conselho Real de Navarra.

✝️A Conversão por Inácio de Loyola✝️

Em 1525, com dezoito anos, foi para Paris dedicar-se aos estudos universitários. No ano de 1530, tornou-se “Magister Artium”, pronto para a carreira acadêmica. Vaidoso e ambicioso, buscava a glória de si até conhecer Inácio de Loyola, que também estudava no Colégio de Santa Bárbara. A relação dos dois foi complicada de início, tanto que o próprio Inácio definiu Francisco como “o pedaço de massa mais difícil que amassou”. Com o tempo e a intercessão de Inácio, o coração de Francisco foi cedendo ao amor de Jesus, até que entrou no verdadeiro processo de conversão. O resultado se vê no fato de ter se tornado cofundador da Companhia de Jesus, fundada em 1539.

✝️A Primeira Partida✝️

Já como padre e empenhado no caminho da santidade, São Francisco Xavier foi designado a ir em missão para o Oriente. Foi o primeiro jesuíta que partiu de Lisboa para as missões nas Índias em 7 de abril de 1541. Fez um frutuoso trabalho de evangelização que abrangeu todas as classes e idades.

De Portugal à Índia✝️

A viagem de Lisboa a Goa (Estado indiano) durou, aproximadamente, treze meses; uma viagem fatigante devido à falta de comida, ao calor intenso e às tempestades. Chegou a Goa, em 1542, escolhendo como casa o hospital da cidade; sua cama era ao lado de pacientes em situação grave. Seu ministério, a partir desse momento, foi dedicar-se à assistência dos excluídos da sociedade. No ensinamento com as crianças, adotou um novo método, ensinando o Catecismo com o auxílio de um sininho, que tocava pelas ruas, a fim de reunir as crianças na igreja. Traduziu os princípios da Doutrina Católica em versos e, para facilitar o aprendizado, cantava-os.

✝️Lançou-se para o mundo✝️

Entre os anos de 1545 e 1547, Francisco conseguiu avançar para outras regiões. Chegou em Malaca, arquipélago das Molucas, e às Ilhas do Moro, sem se preocupar com qualquer perigo, pois confiava em Deus.

✝️O desejo de Evangelizar o Japão✝️

No ano de 1547, sua vida teve uma reviravolta, encontrou Hanjiro, um fugitivo japonês, ansioso em converter-se ao cristianismo. Este encontro acendeu em seu coração o desejo de anunciar o Evangelho à terra do “Sol levante”. Chegou no Japão em 1549, embora soubesse da pena de morte para quem administrasse o sacramento do Batismo, submeteu-se a aprender a língua e os seus costumes, a fim de anunciar um Cristo encarnado.

✝️O final de uma vida dedicada às missões✝️

✝️Missão na China✝️

Ambicionando a China para Cristo, Francisco encarou o país como uma nova terra de missão. Em 1552, chegou à ilha de Shangchuan, onde tentou embarcar para a cidade de Cantão, mas foi acometido por uma forte febre e cansaço.

✝️Páscoa✝️

Faleceu no dia 3 de dezembro de 1552. Dois anos após sua morte, seu corpo íntegro foi trasladado para a igreja de Bom Jesus de Goa, Índia, onde é venerado.

Esse grande santo missionário entrou no Céu com 46 anos e percorreu grandes distâncias para anunciar o Evangelho. Sua missão foi grandiosa, que se colocássemos em uma linha suas viagens, daríamos três vezes a volta na Terra.

São Francisco Xavier, com dez anos de apostolado, tornou-se merecidamente o Patrono Universal das Missões ao lado de Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus em 1927.

✝️Via de Santificação✝️

Foi beatificado, em 1619, por Paulo V, e canonizado, em 1622, por Gregório XV. Seu pensamento pode ser resumido em uma oração que ele sempre rezava: “Senhor, eu vos amo, não porque me podeis dar o céu ou me condenar ao inferno, mas porque sois meu Deus! Amo-vos porque vós sois vós”!

Flower Night Road, the love between prostitutes and clients

The story of "Flower Night Road" takes place in Yoshihara during the Edo period. A wandering girl from a certain family set fire to Yoshihara in order to elope with her lover. Cuarenta y seis años de vida, once de los cuales dedicados a la misión: con razón, San Francisco Javier puede ser considerado un verdadero "gigante de la evangelización". En su existencia, breve pero admirable en la fecundidad misionera, este religioso español logra, de hecho, llevar el Evangelio al extremo Oriente, adaptándolo con sabiduría a la índole y al lenguaje de poblaciones muy diversas entre ellas. Nacido en 1506 en el Castillo de Javier, en Navarra, en el norte de España, Francisco Javier proviene de una familia noble: su padre, Juan de Jassu, es el presidente del Consejo Real de Navarra. En 1525 Francisco va a París para realizar sus estudios universitarios y en 1530 se convierte en "Magister Artium", listo para su carrera académica. Al principio, las relaciones, especialmente con Ignacio, no fueron fáciles, hasta el punto de que el propio Loyola definió a Francisco como "el trozo de pasta más duro que había tenido que amasar", pero la vocación misionera ya estaba instilada en el corazón de Javier que, en la primavera de 1539, participa en la fundación de una nueva Orden religiosa, llamada "Compañía de Jesús".

El catecismo "cantado" para niños

Consagrado a Dios y al apostolado, el 7 de abril de 1541 Francisco parte hacia las Indias, por petición del Papa Pablo III que desea evangelizar esas tierras, en esa época conquista portuguesa. El viaje de Lisboa a Goa, realizado en velero, dura trece meses, que se vuelven fatigosos por la escasez de alimentos, el calor y las tormentas. Una vez llegado a Goa en mayo de 1542, Javier elige el hospital de la ciudad como su hogar y como cama aquella junto al paciente más grave. A partir de ese momento, su ministerio será dedicado al cuidado de los últimos, los excluidos de la sociedad: los enfermos, los presos, los esclavos, los menores abandonados. Especialmente para los niños, Francisco inventó un nuevo método de enseñanza del catecismo: los llamaba a reunirse en las calles tocando una campana y luego, una vez congregados en la iglesia, pone en versos los principios de la doctrina católica y los canta con los niños, facilitando así su aprendizaje.

La evangelización de los pescadores de perlas

Además, durante dos años, se dedica a la evangelización de los indios paravas, los pescadores de perlas que vivían en el sur de las Indias: hablan sólo tamil, pero Francisco logra transmitirles los principios fundamentales de la fe católica, llegando a bautizar a 10.000 de ellos en sólo un mes. "Tan grande es la multitud de conversos -escribe- que a menudo me duelen los brazos de tanto bautizar, y ya no tengo voz y fuerza para repetir el Credo y los Mandamientos en su propio idioma". Pero su trabajo de evangelización no se detiene. Entre 1545 y 1547, Francisco Javier llega a Malaca, al archipiélago de las Molucas y a las Islas del Moro, a pesar de los peligros, porque estaba totalmente seguro de Dios.

La llegada a Japón

En 1547, la vida del futuro santo da otro viraje: conoce a un fugitivo japonés, llamado Hanjiro, deseoso de convertirse al cristianismo. El encuentro hace nacer, en Javier, el deseo de ir a Japón, para llevar el Evangelio también a la tierra del "Sol Naciente". Llega allí en 1549 y, a pesar de la pena de muerte vigente para los que administran el sacramento del Bautismo, el religioso español logra crear una comunidad de cientos de fieles.

El "sueño" de China

De Japón a China, el pasaje es casi natural. Javier mira a la "Tierra del Dragón" como una nueva tierra de evangelización y en 1552 consigue llegar a la isla de Shangchuan desde donde intenta embarcarse para Cantón. Pero le viene una fiebre repentina. Exhausto por el frío y la fatiga, Francisco Javier muere en la madrugada del 3 de diciembre. Sus restos son enterrados en un cajón lleno de cal, sin siquiera una cruz para recordarlo. Sin embargo, dos años después, su cuerpo es trasladado, íntegro e intacto, a Goa, a la Iglesia del Buen Jesús, donde actualmente es venerado. Una de sus reliquias -su antebrazo derecho- se conserva en Roma desde 1614, en la Iglesia del Santo Nombre de Jesús.

Canonizado en 1622

Beatificado por Pablo V en 1619 y canonizado por Gregorio XV en 1622, Francisco Javier es proclamado patrono de Oriente en 1748, de la Obra de la propagación de la fe en 1904 y de todas las Misiones (junto con Santa Teresa de Lisieux) en 1927. Su pensamiento se puede sintetizar en una oración que repetía a menudo: "Señor, yo te amo no porque puedes darme el paraíso o condenarme al infierno, sino porque eres mi Dios. Te amo porque Tú eres tú".
