Who Is Rikuo’s True Foil?

Each of the three Nura commanders have a pretty clear narrative foil, someone who is embodies everything they aren’t and serves as their main enemy… at least, the first two do.

Nurarihyon is hotblooded and ambitious, building up his clan in only 100 years, and lives largely for the intoxicating feeling of love he gets from being around Youhime, while Hagoromo-Gitsune is scheming and methodical, taking around many centuries to bolster in preparation for the Nue’s revival, and feeds off the darkness and hatred of the capital.

Rihan is a beautiful man (undoubtedly the hottest of the three commanders, I’m just going to say it) who lives by the belief that true strength is fighting for those you care about, while Sanmoto is a fat bastard who uses his clan as a form of cheap amusement and views their lives as disposable, something Rihan calls him out for.

But for Rikuo, it’s less clear: for one there’s Yoshihira, who Tsurara outright says is uncomfortably similar to Rikuo, and also Seimei, who operates off a perverted version of Rikuo’s “harmony”.

And I think the answer is that they both are, but in different ways. Rikuo is a character whose arc encompasses multiple themes, but the two main ones here are fate and harmony. Fate is him being the grandson of Nurarihyon, thereby destined to become a youkai lord, resolve his ancestors’ centuries-long conflicts, and ultimately oppose the Cleansing. While defeating Seimei, he even says it’s him “cutting through fate”. Harmony, on the other hand, is his system of ideals, what he wants for the world: that is, for humans and youkai to exist together, without one subjugating the other.

Yoshihira is so similar to Rikuo because of having both been descended from youkai lords and destined to lead their respective families, as well as being three-fourths human. Yoshihira accepted this purely out of obligation and a desire for his father’s recognition, while Rikuo took a more roundabout path to get there. At first he thought being the Master of All Spirits sounded awesome, until he realized that his school friends don’t like youkai, at which point his attitude did a 180 and he wanted to live purely as a human. It was only when Gagoze attacked that he decided he *did* want to take up the mantle, but for the sake of protecting humans from bad guys. This would later be refined into his belief in a harmonious world, and so we see the difference between them: Rikuo decided not to actively oppose his fate persay, but wrangled it into something of his own rather than uncritically accepting it.

Seimei, on the other hand, represents a fallen version of Rikuo’s ideals; a belief in harmony, but a harmony that can only exist through his singular, eternal, and absolute rule, with all dissenting factions being wiped out. It goes so far that he sees his own affection for his mother as a weakness that must be purged, hence why he cast her to Hell. This is in stark contrast to Rikuo, who believes that the bonds between people are precisely what make them strong (carried on from his father, and proven literally with the Matoi) and recognizes the right of both human and youkai groups to largely do their own thing, as long as they aren’t actively causing destruction. Heck, he doesn’t even force Tamazuki, Dassai, and the Tsukumo Clan to join his Hyakki Yakkou, only asking them to temporarily lend their strength for the war against Seimei before parting ways afterward. His ideal world isn’t one of absolute control, but of his subjects actually having a decent amount of freedom.

So, I’d say Rikuo actually has two different foils, one for each of his major themes. It’s also worth pointing out that the ending implies Tamazuki (and possibly also Dassai) will become his main rival(s) in the coming decades, but they wouldn’t necessarily have as much ideological conflict anymore since Tamazuki has largely reformed, and Dassai is just a bro.

Liena is based on Hagoromo Gitsune/ Yamabuki from Nura rise of the yokai clan. I'm making a story about her on Wattpad. To sum it short she gets reincarnated into a different world which is Lego Monkie kid/ Journey to the West, and wants to be better than her previous life. Since she feels like not Hagoromo or Yamabuki she decides to be her own person.

Personality wise she has Yamabuki's kind demeter but Hagoromo's scary side. Liena still loves her precious yokai even in the new world she is in. At first when she appeared in the Jade Palace/ celestial realm Liena had no memory but slowly she does start to remember her life before.

Fan sequel to a fanfic i've read where Rikuo gets erased from the timeline and Hagoromo Gitsune + Rihan tries to find a way to bring him back (I haven't thought of an ending + way)

She was honking over and over again while shouting curses in English. It appears that the once dormant volcano has exploded once again, this time, there’s an earthquake accompanying it.

“DAMN YOU BITCH! MOVE ALREADY! MOVE! AUGHH, DAMN IT! CURSE YOU TRAFFIC! ” Her whole face was turning red like a tomato from anger, there’s even steam coming out from her ears.

“I HATE IT HERE!!!” She pulls her hair in frustration.

It's a bit nostalgic whenever I remember the first time I'm being a hardcore fan over a fictional character like Hagoromo Gitsune. Not being someone who love to follow every animes both the popular ones or those which are going to be released made me feel like seeing her the first time truly hits me hard. Her beauty, long black hair, even her attires are black too. But then she swings her tails madly and that's badass.

I've also found out that according to NnM wikia, her nine tails provide excellent power in both defense and offense. It's something that can move rapidly and attack so hard. So although I love all her weapons she have (especially that Iron Fan), she can strive with her tails alone and the choice of "weapon" Hiroshi Shiibashi chose for her so far is my favorite. No fancy looks, no nonsense transformation/power (I don't hate other characters fyi), just nine tails and then BOOM! And for me that's the most effective weapon I've ever seen in Nurarihyon no Mago.

The type of her osore (aka. fear, but as some sort of a noun rather than a verb) is also interesting, being her presence as the source of her power. To be honest I don't know why she absorbed other people's fear with her presence but seeing how magnificent she looked, I don't think anyone would disagree that she's unattractive. She's also immune to many sorcery spells which made her even stronger than others.

There are other aspects I love from her but since I don't want to give too much spoiler to everyone who don't (or haven't) read the manga I'll stop it right there.

She doesn't need anyone's acknowledgement because her presence already radiates elegance and charisma. She may need 1000 years to completed her Night Parade, but it pays off with quality over quantity. And she doesn't need a crown to be called as queen. She already deserve it. All hail the queen!!!

Why Setsura x Otome Is Awesome

I feel like out of all the potential ships of Setsura with another canon character, Setsura x Otome might actually have the most going in its favor, because it completes her arc on multiple levels. Obviously it means that she finally finds a lover which is pretty much her main desire in life, but it also reflects her gradual change in attitude towards the “brides of Nurarihyon” as she refers to them.

Another user by the name of x0401x has written some really good essays on RikuTsura, but one of the biggest points used to argue in favor of it is that Youhime, Otome, Wakana, and Tsurara all fit a common archetype where they outwardly appear meek, but actually having a great deal of inner strength (Kana doesn’t fit this because she’s too passive; Setsura doesn’t fit this because she’s too intimidating as Nurarihyon says, she wears her strength on her sleeve). At first, Setsura absolutely *hated* this type of woman, she thought of Youhime as being weak and annoying and not remotely worthy of being Nurarihyon’s wife, but (at least from what I’ve heard from supplementary materials) she eventually softened up and started to respect her strengths: not just her healing ability, but also with mothering Rihan and not being afraid to get stern when necessary.

This trend continued with Otome, who she sometimes feels annoyed by the naivety of, but despite that ends up becoming good friends with. This is somewhat shown in the manga with them sharing a morning chat, but the OVA implies it most heavily with the fact that Otome deciding to send her letter to Setsura of all people. She knew she was on her deathbed, and that she needed someone who she could absolutely trust, who wouldn’t just bring Rihan along and who she could know her final words were safe with. And who did she send for? Setsura. Out of everyone she knew (excluding Rihan), she chose to spend her last moments with Setsura, and that implies they had probably formed a really close connection beforehand.

Therein lies the ship potential: maybe she saves Otome, manages to nurse her back to health, and continues keeping her company. Otome, still unable to return to Rihan for shame of being “barren”, stays alone with Setsura and starts developing certain feelings for her, who in turn realizes (perhaps with a bit of annoyance) that she’s falling for the type of woman she used to despise.

A big reason I like it so much is their contrasting personalities. Setsura is cynical, brooding, envious, and generally quite stressed-out, but also very loving deep down, whereas Otome is largely reserved, innocent, and has a way of getting people in good spirits; and maybe that’s exactly what they need for each other. The former can provide passion and protection, the latter can calm the other’s nerves and get past their stoic exterior. The warmth that the Nura brides are described as having nourished the clan with, it always existed in opposition to Setsura’s dream… but now, it would be Otome bringing that warmth to Setsura’s own heart instead, and I think that’s really sweet.

The thing is, this would very strictly have to be an AU: Otome’s death is an monumentally important plot point, because it means she gets revived by Seimei, brainwashed by Minagoroshi-Jizou, and stabs Rihan, which not only causes the Nura Clan to start collapsing and pressures Rikuo into becoming the Supreme Commander, but also provides Hagoromo-Gitsune with her latest vessel. Which means that it wouldn’t just be a matter of changing this one detail, you’d also potentially have to change the entire rest of the story. Maybe that’s someone’s cup of tea, but personally I find it a more interesting exorcise to try and give Setsura a resolution that still manages to fit within the gaps of canon and is theoretically possible, at which point we get into far more speculative territory.
