This one was more of a relaxing edit, which I wanted to do for fun. ✨
There's been a lot of like, debate over what KIND of fox Tails is, and it is GENERALLY accepted he is a red fox despite not looking anything like one, although it is also debated if he is a fennec because he looks closer to one. However, with Kit being introduced in the comics as a counterpart to Tails, I feel this option is out of the window. Since Surge exists to be a counter to Sonic, and she herself is a tenrec - a similar but not same animal as a hedgehog - then it serves to reason Kit being a fennec means he is a similar but not same fox as Tails is.
So does that mean he is a red fox? I don't think so.
Again, Tails doesn't look anything like a red fox (colors are too bright and lacks the brown markings). His cartoon counterpart in the 90's maybe a bit more, but still, I think Kit's name is a better allusion to the actual animal Tails is: the nine-tailed fox.
Specifically, the kinmou kyuubinokitsunee, or golden-fur nine-tailed fox. (金毛九尾の狐)
Cuz, I think it's pretty clear Tails is based off the nine-tailed fox legend with his extra tail. This comes into play further with the introduction of Nine from Sonic Prime.
However, there isn't just one nine-tailed fox (kyuubinokitsune specifically, as kitsune just means "fox" in Japanese (although obviously can be short-hand for the nine-tail fox in specific context)). There's quite a lot of different variations.
And I think Tails is likely based off of the kinmou kyuubinokitsune, sometimes kinmou kitsune or kin kitsune for short.
All artwork of this specific legendary fox I've seen has the same palette as tails: yellow and white.
And well not super common, I've come across a few pieces depicting it as having two-tails, or two-tails being a variation, like this one:
(in which case it would not be a kyuubinokitsune, since it is not nine.)
I think this is likely what Tails was based off of, given his two-tails and strictly yellow-and-white color choice. He is neither a red fox nor a fennec, but a golden-fur nine(two)-tailed fox.
...at least, this is my theory. I could be wrong lol.
